Don't forget that just because you won a class doesn't mean you have to move up a class,
if you are eligible according to NCHA rules you can show in the same class forever.
We have had 3 excellent clinics with two more to go and I would like to thank them for
their time and effort.
≈Bend Equine and Dr Krebs for their Lameness Locator Clinic that was held at
Hooker Creek Ranch
≈Cinder Rock Vet Clinic and Dr Edmonds Preventative to Regenerative along with
Nate Smith an independent nutritionist put on a very informative evening
≈Russ Elrod for his effort and time helping everyone learn more about herd help
Mark McNair will be at this upcoming practice to help us learn more about getting up
out of the herd and setting up your cow for a successful run.
Then we have the Russ Miller Clinic coming up at the end of March for a very reasonable fee of $450 for 2 days. There are only a few spots left so please hurry if you are interested. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Board member profile
Roger Freeborn
1. Your name, family members, where you were born and
grew up?
My name is Roger Freeborn I have 3 Sons and 5 grandchildren, my wife Mary
& brother Bill. I was born in Oneida, NY where my father and grandfather were
granite cutters. My mother, brother and I moved to Florida during WW2. After
the war my father worked as a Red Cross Field Director and we moved a lot.
We all moved to California where we had acreage enough to have a horse for
my brother. I was coerced into breaking and riding donkeys for my brother who
turned them for a profit as “broke”. If you could get from here to there without
getting dumped they were broke. 1952 we moved to Newmarket, the race horse
capital of England where I took up hunt riding to the hounds over fences and
hedges. Several years later we moved to Wiesbaden, Germany where I rode
Jump horses in an arena on the third story of a building in downtown Wiesbaden. We then moved back to Santa Anna, CA. Where I graduated from high
school and spent my spare time riding Jumpers.
2. How did you get interested in cutting and how long have you been enjoying this sport?
I apprenticed to a farrier in southern CA in 1964 and saw some cutters at a show at a big AHSA show in Del Mar. When I
moved to Oregon around 1967 I gained many clients who were cutters-first Bob Mettler, Jim Wilson & Louie Lawless. Then C2
Cattle Co and Arrowhead Ranch and eventually Mark McNair, Don Hagglund and my future wife, Mary Benson.
3. What do you do for a living and do you have other interests or hobbies?
I have been a farrier for 47 years. My hobby is Artistic Blacksmithing & tool-making.
4. Tell us about your horse (s)…..
Max is a 10 yr. old grey gelding. He likes me and I like him; we just click. My new horse is my 4 yr old, Juana B Stylin, aka
Trevor the first futurity horse by our stallion I have gotten to show.
5. Who have your mentors been?
I have known Gary Bellenfant since 1964 and we have had horses with him since 1993. Mary my wife has been the greatest influence toward cutting.
6. What is the best run you’ve seen so far? What is the most fun or memorable run you’ve had so
far?
Gary Bellenfant’s finals run on Peptoboonsmal at the 1995 NCHA Futurity. My amateur run at the Abilene Spectacular in January 2012.
7. Do you have any ideas on how the sport could be improved?
We’ve lost a lot of participants in the last few years and not gained many, so as cutters we need to encourage growth in the sport
and provide opportunities for people in other equine activities to learn about cutting. We need to be active in more networking
and more visibility. Also more cutters need to see cutting at its best; join NCHA & watch NCHA videos and judges tapes. Our
club needs to be instrumental in providing these educational materials as well as a place to practice, show and socialize with
people who have similar interests.
Comments:
I appreciate the opportunity to serve on the board of COCHA. It’s a great place to start cutting with good people to help.
