CHAIN CARE GUIDE
INTRODUCTION
There are many different applications, treatments and qualities involved in the seemingly
simple chain. This ‘simple’ chain consisting of roughly 650 single parts is probably one
of the most important, hi- tech and crucial parts of your bike. When it functions well you
are not aware of its existence, but when there is something wrong, you will be displeased
with the loss of performance, the noise, or even worse, a breakage. Here are some tips
for maintenance and usage that will help you prolong the chain’s life and improve its
performance.

WHEN TO PERFORM
CHAIN MAINTENANCE
Maintenance depends on the conditions you
ride in; wet and muddy conditions prompt a
more intensive schedule than dry and asphalt
conditions.
INDICATORS TO WATCH OUT FOR
• Reduction of shifting function
• Chain-Suck (chain sticking to your front
chain wheel)
• Squeaking or Rattling noises from the
drive-train (chain is too dry).
FOR ROAD USE inspect your chain at least
once every month or every 250 kilometers
(150 miles).
FOR OFF-ROAD USE inspect your chain at least
once every 100 kilometers (60 miles).

NEW CHAIN CARE
Your new chain will usually feel sticky on
the outside. This is due to the residues
of the high-grease which is used during
assembly. Remove this grease from the
outside of the chain with a thin liquid
cleaner (no aggressive degreaser!),
lubricate the rollers, and remove the
excess lubricant with a rag.

CLEANING
•

Clean the chain with a dry cloth.
To remove heavy dirt or sand, use a brush (which
is supplied in each KMC Chain Lube Pro pack). For
particularly dirty chains use lukewarm water with a mild
detergent or a rag soaked with light oil.
•
Also clean the sprockets, front changer and derailleur
pulleys every time to clean your chain.
•
If you open the chain to clean it, clean the MissingLink
and the open ends very carefully.
•
Lubricate the pins of the MissingLink/Connector before
reconnecting.
•
After cleaning and reassembly always check your chain
is functioning properly before riding.
LUBRICATION
•
Make sure you are using the appropriate lubricant, we
recommend the original KMC Chain Lube.
•
Lubricate the chain every time you clean it, scrub it,
or wash it with any solvent (the usage of solvent is not
recommended!)
•
•
Before lubricating, make sure the chain is dry
•
In order to avoid a build-up of excess grease, try to apply
it on the critical places only, like the rollers. Applying
grease there helps to reduce chain wear and noise
•
Apply just enough grease on the rest of the chain to
prevent rust
•
•
Remove excess grease from the outside of the chain
•
After lubricating, use a dry cloth to remove excess
grease from the chain’s outside, this prevents attracting
excessive amounts of dirt and dust.
•
Before re-connecting your chain, clean the chain’s ends
and inner bearings of chain ends, to make sure no
dirt remains there. After cleaning, and before applying
the connecting link, apply grease inside and onto the
connector’s pins.
Use a lubricant which initially penetrates the chain’s
bearing, and then turns ‘sticky’ or ‘dry’. In this way you
can reach the chain parts which are most sensitive to
wear
In the case of derailleur bikes: pay attention to the
derailleur pulleys, chainrings and cassette sprockets.
Use the same principle as above for maintaining and
lubricating them.
DON'TS
• Never use acidic or alkaline cleaners
(anti-rust solvent). These will damage
the chain and can lead to breakage.
• Never use aggressive degreasers
- they will remove the high-grease
from the pins. This grease is inserted
during production to help protect
your chain from wear. Without this
grease, dirt will be able to penetrate
the chain which reduces chain
life dramatically! In addition, these
agents are also harmful to the
environment.
• Keep the same principles when
using a chain cleaning device. These
can often contain solvents that can
damage your chain.
• If you use wax, we never
recommend degreasing the chain
completely.
