For the second month in a row the general category (Administration, Loop Road, Maintenance and Security) was better than budget (largely due to an unfilled position and accrued revenue we may not actually realize), but not enough to offset worse than budget performances in Golf and Food & Beverage. This result is not entirely unexpected nor a bad thing as this budget is “tighter” than recent ones and one of our goals is to gradually draw down our cash balances. Before I get to the specifics of Golf and Food & Beverage I want to talk a little bit about budget building and monthly projections. When Margaret and I meet with department heads in October and November we have make some (hopefully) educated guesses about where revenues and expenses are going to wind up four months later. Based on the first 8 months of the year Jerry and I agreed on an estimate for the year end which we also used as the target for 16-17. Similarly Jeff and I agreed on an estimate for Food & Beverage. Each of those estimates turned out to way too rosy, by about $45,000 each. For that reason budget estimates of monthly income will be challenging to meet. I will continue to track and report on actual vs budget estimate for the year, but will also report on 16-17 figures vs actual figures for the previous year. Monthly projections are based on a calculation that revenue will come in this year at the same percentage it did last year month by month; sometimes that leads to big plusses or minuses. For Golf, revenue failed to meet expectations by about $,7000 in April and about $11,000 for the year; however, when you look at actual year to year, the numbers look much better-about $6,000 down for the month and only $4,000 for the year to date. Expenses are almost right on budget estimates. For Food and Beverage, April was off about $9,000 but only about $5,000 for the first two months. Compared to last year’s actual amounts F&B revenue was off $5,000 for April, but is actually $3,000 ahead for this year. F&B experienced an unusual shortfall last month largely due to timing (a few events that were held in April last year occurred in May this year). Another factor was that we had a very large wedding in April last year that led me to project higher anticipated monthly revenue than we could realistically achieve. Expenses are just about as budgeted for the month and year. The Reserve account balance at the end of the month was $3,534,214; higher than planned on because we anticipated starting the fence work sooner. Aged owner balances are virtually unchanged from the start of the year. Available cash balances are trending as expected. Pat Calnon Los Prados Community Association Income & Expense Summary From the Chief Operating Officer…. Dear Residents, We have selected an architect for the restaurant/bar renovation. We will have drawings and color selections posted as they are completed. Also, remember there is still time to provide your comments/suggestions on forms available at the front desk. The pools are open and as the warmer weather approaches please review the pool rules noted in the newsletter. Also, please remember that inflatables are not allowed. The Compliance Committee has asked me to remind you of several items: Palm trees must be kept trimmed as they are a haven for roof rats. Residents are responsible for their property to the curb. Speeding continues to be a problem. Please observe speed limits. Should you receive a violation notice, you must respond in writing. As always, thank you for your continued support and feedback. Cordially, Margaret Thayer Chief Operating Officer President’s Column... We had a very interesting open board meeting on Tuesday evening. A lot of comments were made concerning various topics. First I would like to clear up a miss conception about open board meetings. This meeting is open to the public so that the board members can discuss different topics concerning their duties to serve the home owners. Mike Ferrell stated this openly at the close of the meeting. Any homeowner can discuss topics that are on the agenda but the final discussion is up to the elected officials of the Board of Directors. We appreciate any comments concerning. The topics that are being considered. Last night we approved the architectural company to proceed with the remodeling of the bar and restaurant. Now we can find out what designs and procedures that we need to finalize before over seeding in September. We also approved the fencing around the Gold Course with model 3 with pet fencing and picket top. We believe that this project is going to take quite a few months to finalize. A few people were concerned about just repairing the fencing and just replacing the rusted or broken fence. Hiring personnel to just repair the fencing would just be putting a Band-Aid on the problem and the cost would be just as expensive as purchasing new fence. We Thought that by putting new fences around the golf course would beautify the overall course and give it better eye appeal Ed Ujifusa Activities at Attention Los Prados Residents…. June Tournaments -noneThe next schedule Association event is the July 4th Tournament. Driving/Walking on Course while not playing I ask all homeowners and golfers to help us by not using the golf course cart paths as your road home. It is a safety issue as well as a courtesy to the golfers playing the course. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. Thank You!! Pace of Play Policy On a separate page in this newsletter you find a copy of the Pace of Play Policy. We ask everyone to please read it and cooperate with our golf course marshals. We are trying to make sure everyone has an enjoyable round and pace of play is a big factor in that regard. Dress Code The policy for the Dress Code applies any time you are on the golf course, putting green, chipping green and practice area. Please try to adhere to this policy even when just coming out to practice. Thanks! Golf Course Humor Playing with the pro "You surely don't want me to hole that?" the pompous amateur blustered. His ball was about 2 inches from the hole but his opponent, the club professional, answered quietly. "No". The amateur picked up and walked on next tee. He was about to take honour when he was interrupted by his opponent. "My honour, I think," said the professional. I won last hole, as you didn't putt out. "But you said you didn't want me to hole out," spluttered the amateur. "That's right. I didn't, and you didn't" Enjoy your Golf! Jerry Dunlop, PGA Director of Golf Los Prados Pace of Play Policy Our Marshals have total authority over the golf play. To avoid any confusion and to ensure that our policies are enforced in a consistent manner, the methods used to identify groups that are behind an acceptable pace of play are made as simple as possible. If you have fallen back, relative to the group ahead of you, you are behind! Example: If you TEE off immediately behind the group in front, you are expected to stay immediately behind that group, at all times, for the duration of your round. The pace of play is determined by your position relative to the group ahead, not the group behind. If the group behind you has fallen back, it means that the Marshal will be trying to get them back into the proper position. To move them into position, all groups ahead must first be positioned properly. Why did the Marshal ask me to speed up? (1st contact with Marshal) If you have been asked to pick-up your pace it means that you have been identified as having fallen back of the group ahead of you. This does not mean you are being singled out. Many groups may be asked to speed up every day. A group can fall behind briefly for many reasons such as a member of your group may have spent an extra couple of minutes searching for a lost ball, or your group may have had to wait a few minutes for a maintenance cart to clear a landing area. Of more importance, is a group that is simply taking too much time between shots and not being ready to play or are otherwise unaware they have fallen behind. In either case, the Marshal will likely know the reason your group has fallen behind. It is his job to remind everyone that they must keep up with the group in front. What happens if our group cannot keep up? (2nd contact with Marshal) Los Prados Golf and Country Club welcomes golfers of all abilities, however, it is a condition of playing at this course that you play within the stated pace of play and do not fall back of the groups ahead. High handicap golfers do not have a monopoly on slow play. Many mid and low handicap golfers also have bad habits that can contribute to slow play. The Marshal will give your group fair opportunities to catch up to the group ahead of you (the number of opportunities will depend on how far behind you have fallen). If your group still is not capable of catching the group ahead, you may be asked to play a more forward TEE or pick-up your ball and move ahead into position. We want all our customers to enjoy a relaxing time on our course without feeling they are being pressured, but sometimes these actions must be taken to ensure unacceptable delays do not occur on the course. Failure to follow the Marshals’ instructions: (3rd contact with Marshal) Failure to follow the Marshals’ instructions could result in removal from the course If there are Marshals, why is it slow today? Our Staff does everything within their power to minimize the number of slow rounds on the golf course. There are however, on a few occasions, circumstances beyond our control that prevent this from happening. To Marshal, a large group of golfers during long and busy days requires cooperation from all of the players. If this is not forthcoming, your round may take longer through no fault of your own. For this reason, we can only guarantee our best effort to maintain pace of play and without help from all players cannot guarantee a specific pace of play. What can I do to help the pace of play? Everyone who plays golf has a responsibility to share the golf course fairly with other golfers. If you are falling behind, please use these simple tips. Play ready golf: This means when the way is clear for you to shoot, be ready to shoot. Don’t be concerned with whose turn it is to hit If there is a member of your group who is a shorter hitter, have them hit first Do not stop on a TEE area or green to have a conversation Keep playing and walking/driving while conversing, as the group behind you will be waiting for you to clear the landing area Don’t spend too much time looking for a golf ball If you can’t find it in a few minutes drop another and continue If you are using a power cart, walking to your ball to see which club you’ll need, wastes a great deal of time. Take several clubs to your ball if you are not sure Keep up to the group ahead of you! (I am sure that our 8 A.M. tee time has a lot to do with it!) For those ladies who are beginning to head for cooler climates, we wish you a safe trip and a healthy and happy summer. Everyone enjoyed the May Tournament and everyone had a great time. The golfers were asked to calculate the total number of shots to the green. The winners were the people with the fewest total shots. Those people were: 1st Place- Thelma Esteban 2nd Place- Evelyn Johnson (33) 3rd Place- Ellen Dunning. (35) Congratulations ladies! Project 150, our charity for 2016, (to aid homeless high school students), seems to be an ongoing activity. Several of the Niners have contacted me asking for the address of the project’s volunteer headquarters to deliver additional donations. Thank you ladies for your generosity. A big thank you goes to Pam Tallent, Barb Houliston, and Ellen Dunning for helping to organize the many items for our initial delivery. For any of the Niners who come into the clubhouse after golf, please stop to look at our bulletin board. It is beautifully decorated and is a great source of current information. Thank you to Barb Houliston for all your hard work. Ron Cameron, Secretary, LPGA [email protected] Los Prados Men’s Club….. LOS PRADOS BOOK CLUB We will read Brooklyn by Colm Toibin for June. Hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking, Brooklyn, is set in Brooklyn and Ireland in the early 1950s, when one young woman crosses the ocean to make a new life for herself. Eilis Lacey has come of age in small-town Ireland in the years following World War Two. Though skilled at bookkeeping, she cannot find a job in the miserable Irish economy. When an Irish priest from Brooklyn sponsors Eilis in America -- to live and work in a Brooklyn neighborhood "just like Ireland" -- she decides she must go, leaving her fragile mother and her charismatic sister behind. Eilis finds work in a department store on Fulton Street, and when she least expects it, finds love. Tony, a blond Italian from a big family, slowly wins her over with patient charm. He takes Eilis to Coney Island and Ebbets Field, and home to dinner in the two-room apartment he shares with his brothers and parents. He talks of having children who are Dodgers fans. But just as Eilis begins to fall in love with Tony, devastating news from Ireland threatens the promise of her future. By far Tóibín's most instantly engaging and emotionally resonant novel, Brooklyn will make readers fall in love with his gorgeous writing and spellbinding characters. For July, we will read The Double Bind by Chris Bohjalian. When Laurel Estabrook is attacked while riding her bicycle through Vermont’s back roads, her life is forever changed. Formerly outgoing, Laurel withdraws into her photography, spending all her free time at a homeless shelter. There she meets Bobbie Crocker, a man with a history of mental illness and a box of photographs that he won’t let anyone see. When Bobbie dies, Laurel discovers a deeply hidden secret–a story that leads her far from her old life, and into a cat-and-mouse game with pursuers who claim they want to save her. In a tale that travels between the Roaring Twenties and the twenty-first century, between Jay Gatsby’s Long Island and rural New England, bestselling author Chris Bohjalian has written his most extraordinary novel yet. We are open to all residents of Los Prados and friends as well. We meet the first Wednesday of the month at 12:00 in the Cypress Room. After a lively discussion, those who can, stay and enjoy lunch in the Clubhouse. In a plain and blunt writing style, the author relates the events of that era - the Good, Bad, Ugly, Sad , Happy, and Comic - in Las Vegas history when criminal elements directed much of what happened in this city. The book is jammed packed with facts about the characters - criminal, political, Hollywood celebrity types, and colorful locals - that played significant parts in this time period of the city‘s development. It relates some previously unknown or little know tidbits such as the fact that for a period of that time, the mob declared Las Vegas a safe city. That meant, no mob contract to kill someone could be fulfilled in Las Vegas. It then goes on to describe some people who did not believe that and left the city for some family event - wedding - holiday etc - and were promptly killed. JUST SOME REMINDERS In addition to an ever changing stock of great books, the Library has a large number of jig-saw puzzles of varying sizes, a selection of books on CD, and from time to time a number of DVD movies. Once again, it might pay you to drop in when you get a chance. The number on the bottom of each book is the date of publication. It can be an aid, if you are trying to read an author’s work in order. Over the recent weeks, there have been some significant changes in the arrangement of the library shelves. Now, all Hardback Mystery fiction are filed on adjoining shelves (22) & (23). Paperback Mystery are filed on shelves (9) & (10). All General Fiction - Hardback and Paperback - is on shelf (6). All Biographies are filed on shelf (5). Please place all donations/returns near the fireplace. All donations are reviewed for condition, age (old travel guides, financial and medical books are not shelved), and number that book already on the shelf. Then all newly donated books are dated and stamped. One of the earliest Library Volunteers was Jean Hamilton. Jean has left Los Prados to move closer to her family. We wish her well and give a “ Big Thanks” for all her great work. We also welcome the newest volunteers - Judy Cooper ( Desert Fountains) and Suzanne Rayno (Cliff Rose Shores) Neal Schmitt (702) 240-6404 [email protected] From the LOS PRADOS DUST DEVILS CAR CLUB Hello Los Prados this is Marvin with the Dust Devils car club. I was driving back from California and even though it was a prefect day for driving, good visibility, no wind, and temperature less than 90 degrees, I noticed several cars along the side of Interstate 15 with the hoods up and steam or smoke billowing out or cars with tire problems and even one car that went careening off the road and into the desert sand. The driver wasn’t hurt but I am sure he was wishing he had gotten plenty of sleep the night before or had at least stopped at Barstow for a break. My point is, there are a few things to think of before hitting the highway. (4813 Intrepid) First of all buckle up and don’t drive impaired. A drowsy driver even on a relatively straight road will eventually veer off the road or run into who knows what. Get plenty of rest the night before and take breaks from driving. Give full attention to the road and avoid distractions such as cell phones. Observe the speed limits; driving too fast or too slow can increase your chances of being in a collision. Turn your headlights on as dusk approaches. Now for your vehicle. Maintenance isn’t just an important way to extend the life of the vehicle, it is a major safety issue. One of the most common maintenance problems that can lead to an accident is improper tire pressure. Uneven tire pressure or tire pressure that is too low or too high can lead to a blowout especially in high performance cars and heavy vehicles like SUVs. Check tire pressure when the tires are cold and take it to the suggested pressure in your owners manual. Next, check the fluids in your vehicle. While the engine is cold check the coolant, oil and break fluid levels. If it is time to get the oil changed, do it before you leave. A long trip can put additional stress on your engine. Keeping fluids at proper levels will help you avoid unnecessary breakdowns and maybe even an accident. Also, wash your vehicle or at a minimum clean the windows and headlights for best visibility day and night. Well, that is it for this month. Once again, come visit with us on the last Monday of the month, June 27th at 6:00 p.m. in the Cypress room at the Los Prados club house and did I mention there are no dues.
