Now that the final figures for 2015-16 are in, the preview I provided last month proved to be pretty accurate. The general category of Administration, Loop Road, Maintenance and Security closed the year a plus $61,411, but as I said previously that figure is a little misleading as it contains $52,000 in unbudgeted violation fines and late fees which must be accrued as revenue, but are sometimes not collected. Despite higher than budgeted expenses for legal services, lower than budgeted expenses for bad debt, health insurance and our contract with Securitas resulted in total expenses which were almost exactly as budgeted (a difference of $2,000). Golf was a pleasant surprise as a very strong February (great weather) enabled us to meet the revenue target for the year, which together with lower than anticipated expenses for health insurance, gasoline, electricity and water resulted in a plus $77,222 figure for the fiscal year. That is a much better result than we were looking at when we were developing the budget back in November. Food and Beverage dropped a bit in February, but still had a plus $9,135 for the year based on strong sales (+$52,000) and quite naturally higher expenses for labor and cost of goods that come with more business. Reserves are in great shape ($3,435,779) as we prepare to address the wrought iron fence issue. We are currently investigating further the notion of repair and paint rather than replace, but experts in the field have told us informally that repair/paint may actually be even more costly than replacement. It is important to realize that these fences are 30 years old and that money has been accumulating in the reserve fund for their eventual replacement. In a very real sense, homeowners have already paid for the replacement and now it’s time to do the work. Available cash balances ($972,685) are up about $65,000 from the same time last year which is a significantly smaller increase than in the previous year when the number was $111,000. As I have reported before, the 16-17 budget contains planned expenses $77,234 greater than planned revenues; it is very likely that the 16-17 year end figure will show a slight decrease in available cash which would be the first step in what we want to accomplish-lowering the cash balance, but keeping it at a safe level. Aged owner balances increased about $26,000 for the fiscal year; since violation fines increased about $30,000 there was a decrease in the other categories. Our delinquent assessment rate remains at an enviably low rate of 1.1% As always, I invite your questions and comments at [email protected] Pat Calnon Los Prados Community Association Income & Expense Summary From the Chief Operating Officer…. Ron Cameron, Secretary, LPGA [email protected] Los Prados Men’s Club….. The Importance of Being Able to Identify Your Ball: I know from experience that some of us may have, at one time, hit the wrong ball. It can happen to the best of us. The results can be disastrous. David Feherty does a stand-up show that is quite spectacular. It's all about his life in golf, the drinking and lots of stories about life on the tour. Here's one of his stories: It was back in the 70s and a soon-to-be prominent golfer (Ray Floyd) was playing at Augusta for his first Masters. Back then the players could not bring their own caddies but had to use one of the locals. Floyd told the caddy master he wanted a big fellow who could handle his bag, but who also would keep quiet, no advice needed. The caddy who was assigned Floyd said, "Hello Mr. ...........". Floyd said "Hello." And followed that with, "That's the last I want to hear from you." Everything went well until the 10th hole when Floyd pushed his drive into the right trees on the par 4. After surveying the scene he said out loud, "I'm going to hit a low fade out through that opening to carry and land mid green and then roll over the crest down near the hole." Surprisingly he pulled it off exactly and turned to his caddy and said, "How's that?" The caddy spoke for the first time and said, "That wasn't your ball". We'd Like to Hear from You: During our February board meeting, we spent a lot of time discussing our next Calcutta. Participation has been dwindling over the past few years, and we would like to turn that around. Here are some of the things we discussed: The entry fee will be $50 (exclusive of greens fees). That would cover the normal entry fee, team skins, and contribution to the prize money pool. There will be no mandatory team purchase, as was done in the past. Eliminate door prizes, and put that money into the prize money pool. The number of places paid for the tournament competition would be increased from approximately 1/3 to ½ of the entrants. Tournament format would be a 4 man scramble, with members forming their own teams. Team handicaps would be 80% of the average team handicap. The person whose ball position is selected for the succeeding shot may not hit that shot (except for balls on the green). On the Thursday night before the tournament, you will still have the opportunity to purchase a team. Teams will be auctioned off to the highest bidder, and that prize money pool will be separate from the tournament prize money pool. We will pay three places (win, place, and show). A para mutual will also be available. At this event, there will be a “no-host” bar. (4820 Intrepid) Participation is limited to members of the Men's Club who have played in at least 10 competitions since the last Calcutta. Please let us know what you think. You may contact one of your officers (Tim Marcovich, Gary Daffenberg, Jim Manos, Pat Devries, Doug Jensen, Zip Zipperer), or you can email me your thoughts to [email protected]. Reminder: We play all competitions and tournaments according to USGA rules. This means that you DO NOT improve your lie in the fairway or rough, and all balls in play must be putted into the hole. LOS PRADOS BOOK CLUB For April, we will read We Are Called to Rise by Laura McBride Three lives are bound together by a split-second mistake, and a child’s fate hangs in the balance. What happens next will test—and restore—your faith in humanity. Far from the neon lights of the Vegas strip, three lives are about to collide. A middle aged woman attempting to revive her marriage. A returning soldier waking up in a hospital with no memory of how he got there. A very brave eight-year-old immigrant boy. This is a story about families—the ones we have and the ones we make. It’s a story about America today, where so many cultures and points of view collide and coexist. We Are Called to Rise challenges us to think about our responsibilities to each other and reminds us that no matter how cruel life can be in a given moment, it is ultimately beautiful to live, and live fully. May will find us reading Orphan Train by Christine Baker Kline. Christina Baker Kline’s Orphan Train is an unforgettable story of friendship and second chances that highlights a little-known but historically significant movement in America’s past—and it includes a special PS section for book clubs featuring insights, interviews, and more. Penobscot Indian Molly Ayer is close to “aging out” out of the foster care system. A community service position helping an elderly woman clean out her home is the only thing keeping Molly out of juvie and worse… As she helps Vivian sort through her possessions and memories, Molly learns that she and Vivian aren’t as different as they seem to be. A young Irish immigrant orphaned in New York City, Vivian was put on a train to the Midwest with hundreds of other children whose destinies would be determined by luck and chance. Molly discovers that she has the power to help Vivian find answers to mysteries that have haunted her for her entire life—answers that will ultimately free them both. Rich in detail and epic in scope, Orphan Train is a powerful novel of upheaval and resilience, of unexpected friendship, and of the secrets we carry that keep us from finding out who we are. NOTE CHANGE OF TIME We meet the first Wednesday of the month at 11:30 a.m. in the Cyprus Room. Residents and friends are welcome to attend our discussions. Those who can, stay for lunch afterwards. There is no agreement on the top monster movies but there is a consensus on what movies are among the best. So here they are - name that monster movie. 1) This 1979 first of a series stared Sigourney Weaver and Tom Skerritt. It featured an extraterrestrial creature that stalked and killed members of a space ship. Great success and winner of many awatds. 2) There have been several remakes of this 1933 movie about an ape that takes Manhattan by storm but the original (especially the restored/uncut version) is still tops in my mind for its special effects and terror. 3) This 1954 movie is a monster cult movie; partially due to the fact that it was one of the first 3-D films. It stared Denning, Carslon, and Julie Adams. They hunt for a mysterious Amazonian “Gill Man” creature. 4)The 1982 version of this movie placed higher than the 1972. The original about the monster found in the Artic scared me for days; especially the scene when the finders discovered the shape of the buried object. 5) This classic 1935 movie stared Elsa Lanchester in the title role along with Boris Karloff. Basically the story of a monster seeking female companionship. A pioneer of scary movies. 6)This 1986 movie stared Goldblum and Davis. It is about a man’s slow transformation into a common annoying insect and the havoc he creates in that transformation. 7) After watching this 1942 horror movie staring Simone Simon and Tom Conway, you might view the feline in your household in a different way. Made for a mere $113,000 it was a box office success and became a cult classic. 8) This 1931 movie stared Bela Lugosi in the title role as a very unusual nobleman. It set the standard for the many vampire movies to follow. 9)A 1981 movie about two young men backpacking through England. They get attacked by a special type of creature. One gets killed; one gets away but soon realizes something bad is happening to him. At the next several full moons, he becomes this type of creature and proceeds to terrorize a noted English city. 10) This 1968 zombie movie was made for $114,000 and grossed over $30 million (US & Abroad). It’s a cult classic about a small group of people being attacked by an army of zombies. WHO SAID THAT? - ANSWERS 1) President Harry Truman; 2) President John F. Kennedy; 3) Will Rogers; 4) Thomas Edison; 5) Never actually said in the movie Casablanca. Ilsa says “Play it, Sam”; 6) President Theodore Roosevelt; 7) Mae West; 8) Vince Lombardi; 9) Another quote never actually written in the Holmes books; 10) General George S. Paton, Jr.; 11) Benjamin Franklin; 12) Will Rogers ALTERNATE HISTORY - YOU COULD GET HOOKED! Admittedly, the Alternate History genre is not for everyone. However, if you are a history buff or a “What If?” wonderer, you could be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the novels that fall in this genre. The idea of the novels is to take a fact(s) of history and offer that “What If” question. For example - What if Germany had won the War in Europe before the US entered? That is premise of several writers including “SS-GB” (1979) by Len Deighton, “The Fatherland” (1994) by Robert Harris, and “The Darkest Hour” (2014) and “The British Lion” (2015) by Tony Schumacher. Also, authors such as Douglas Niles and Michael Dobson have written on alternate WWII history. Currently, Amazon TV is airing a series called “The Man in the High Castle” based on the 1962 book by Philip K. Dick. Premise is a Nazi occupation of a portion of the US. If the Civil War is your interest, you can read numerous books by Harry Turtledove about the Civil War ending in a stalemate and resulting in two separate nations aka the Korean War Truce. The author takes these two nations through all of our recent historical events i.e. WWI, the Depression, WWII and alike. Newt Gingrich and William R. Forstchen are other writers in this area with novels on both WWII ( Pacific Theater) and the outcome of various Civil War battles. Neal J. Schmitt - (702) 240-6404 [email protected] From the LOS PRADOS DUST DEVILS CAR CLUB We are looking for new members so if you own a classic vehicle, a brand new vehicle, or anything in between here is your chance. We are a club for anyone interested in automobiles whether modern or vintage. The membership is made up of people that live in Los Prados and outside of Los Prados. We meet the last Monday of the month except when that day is a holiday and no meeting in December. The meeting this month will be held on Monday, April 25th at the Los Prados club house in the Cypress Room at 6:00 pm. This is a social meeting with dinner being optional and did I mention that there are no dues to join. For more information check out our website lospradosdustdevils.com or call 702-807-7431. Last month I started talking about muscle cars in general. Remember the Rocket 88 the first car recorded to receive the name muscle car. In the 60’s and 70’s things really began to heat up in the muscle car category. In the months to come we will take a look at how the BIG 3 (car companies) made their entry into this category and some cars around the club that are representative of the era. General motors came out in a big way with the SS package which was available for every 2 door coupe or convertible made. One very popular car at this time was the newly introduced Chevelle. The wheel base on the Chevelle was the same as that of the 55 to 57 Chevy and in 1964 the Malibu SS package also revived the 283 Power-Pak V8 (220 hp) from the same past era. While the 1964 Malibu SS may have recalled past glories, the new 'muscle car' future for Chevelle took on a new body style and the SS 396 badge with special paint designs and a top 375 hp engine. 1968 gave way to the Second Generation Chevelle which proved to be the most popular of all. Black-accented Super Sports rode F70x14 red-stripe tires and carried a standard 325-horsepower 396-cubic-inch Turbo-Jet V8 engine below the special twin-domed hood; 350 and 375-horsepower 396 engines could be substituted at additional cost. The 1969 to 1972 Chevelle SS remained America’s favorite. Around the club Mark and Linda Avey’s Chevelle SS, pictured below, is a good example this muscle car. Well, that’s it for this month. Add all of the rest of the ingredients for the dressing. Mix and set aside. Marinate the chicken breasts with half of the dressing. Steam the broccoli and asparagus for 8-10 minutes until they are soft but still have a bite to them. Add the chicken breast to a frying pan and sauté for 10-15 minutes until they are fully cooked. Chop the tomatoes into quarters, black olives into half’s and dice the avocado. Now for the pomegranate… As pomegranate juice stains, before you cut into the top of the fruit, make sure that you have an apron to cover your clothes. Begin by removing the base and the crown of the fruit. Create 6 gentle cuts (not too deep so you do not cut into the seeds). Pry open the 6 cuts, gently, over a bowl. Once you have opened your pomegranate, turn it upside down, so the skin is facing up and begin tapping the fruit with a wooden spoon and the seeds will simply drop in your hands. Repeat this process with the rest of the pieces. Let’s begin to assemble our salad! Place the spinach at the bottom of the bowl. Add broccoli asparagus, tomatoes, black olives and chicken. Add avocado and pomegranate seeds. Finally, drizzle the rest of the dressing, serve and enjoy!
