Year 9 Program for
Regional Students
ArtsConnect9
Welcome to the 2016 program for ArtsConnect9!
Arts Centre Melbourne passionately believes that everyone should have the
opportunity to experience and enjoy the arts – including our young Victorian
students living outside of central Melbourne.
This is an important Victorian Government initiative designed to connect
regional Year 9 students with Melbourne’s leading arts and cultural institutions
and activities and Arts Centre Melbourne is once again pleased to
coordinate another exciting series of events.
ArtsConnect9, now in its 20th year, has introduced over 100,000 young
regional Victorians to Melbourne’s theatres, galleries, museums and libraries.
By removing the cost of travel and presenting subsidised activities, this
important program enables students located in regional areas to experience
and engage with our city’s cultural institutions.
Engagement with the arts can play an important role in educating our young
students, igniting their imaginations and inspiring creative discourse and
cultural exchange. ArtsConnect9 plays an important role in creating these
long-lasting experiences.
On behalf of the Victorian Government and all the institutions involved in this
year’s program, I invite you to immerse your students in this year’s program
and enable them to experience all that’s on offer.

How It Works
Tips & Advice: How to get the most
out of ArtsConnect9
BEFORE
• Start planning early. These programs are very
popular and will sell out. You should aim to have
your booking form to us at least one month before
your excursion date.
• Be flexible. Have some alternative dates up your
sleeve just in case we are unable to
accommodate your group on your preferred date.
• Add AC9 to the Booklist. Add the $9 per student
cost of an ArtsConnect9 excursion to the Year 9
Booklist. This will help guarantee attendance and
cover the cost of the day.
• Lock in your numbers. Get student payment and
permission forms back early to assist in locking in
final numbers by the due date on the confirmation
paperwork. Please keep in mind that AC9 expects
payment for your booking before the excursion
date.
• Don’t try to fit too much into your day.
Keep in mind:
• Realistic arrival and departure times (to and
from Melbourne)
• Travel times between venues
• Speak with your colleagues. There are some great
cross-curricular opportunities in the ArtsConnect9
program. An AC9 excursion can really
complement your curriculum, be useful in whole
school planning and deepen student
engagement.
• Check your emails. This is our primary source of
communication.
DURING
• Provide a mobile phone contact for the day and
keep your mobile on!
• Print out and bring along the confirmation
paperwork. You may need to present this for entry
at some venues.
• Please aim to arrive at least 15-minutes prior to
the start time of your experience at the venue
specified on your itinerary.
• Participate. Get involved. Jump in and enjoy the
day with your students.
AFTER
• Integrate the AC9 experience into the Year 9
curriculum.
• Lunch breaks
• See if there are any Teaching Resources for the
experiences your class attends.
• Exhaustion levels and expectations on the
students
• Remember to submit your Travel Claim form,
invoice and documents.

Highlights of the Malthouse Theatre Season
2016 for Young Audiences
Picnic at Hanging Rock (pictured) has haunted the Australian psyche for
over a century. One summer’s day in 1900, three schoolgirls and a
teacher inexplicably vanish, never to be seen again. In Tom Wright’s
brilliant adaptation of Joan Lindsay’s classic novel, five performers will
struggle to solve the mystery of the missing girls and their teachers.
26 February – 20 March, Merlyn Theatre
The Glass Menagerie introduces one of Tennessee Williams’ most
legendary characters – the formidable Amanda Wingfield, a faded
Southern Belle with delusions of grandeur. The year is 1937, and she is
stuck in a tiny, run-down apartment with her two adult children – the
frustrated Tom and the cripplingly shy Laura. In this highly acclaimed
production, recollections from the Wingfield apartment are converted
onstage into moments from a lost black-and-white film. *2015 Helpmann

Soliloquy is an intimate cross-media performance for an actor and a

In a world where every private and public moment can be documented,

our identity. Do we ever have truly unguarded moments anymore? And
when are we truly authentic?
Surrounded by screens, the two performers inhabit an ever-changing
space filled with manipulated images of themselves and others.
Oscillating between dramatic transformations into classic characters and
periods of intense self-examination, they take the audience on a

to another world. With its bewitched Swan Queen, its doomed Prince, its
glittering villainess and its drifts of white tutus, this is one of ballet’s timeless
classics.
Stephen Baynes’ traditional production, commissioned in 2012 for The
Australian Ballet’s 50th anniversary, combines grand scale and
psychological intimacy. His lost, forlorn Siegfried is drawn to the lake and
its secret realm of mystery and enchantment, where he falls in love with
the Swan Queen Odette. Tricked and betrayed by the seductive Black
Swan Odile, he can redeem himself only in death.
Hugh Colman’s magnificent designs pit Edwardian splendour against the
spectral beauty of the white acts. This is a timeless Swan Lake that will
tingle your spine and stir your soul.
Credits: Choreography Stephen Baynes, Music Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Costume and set
design Hugh Colman, Lighting design Rachel Burke. Projections designed and directed
by Domenico Bartolo (21-19).

Swan Lake – Repertoire Workshop
Contemporary Ballet Workshop
Since its debut in 1877, Swan Lake has become one of
the world’s most popular ballets. With a magnificent
Tchaikovsky score, and iconic characters such as the
bewitched Swan Queen and the doomed Prince,
Swan Lake has created some of ballet’s most iconic
moments.
In Contemporary Ballet, the rules of Classical Ballet are
bent, twisted and sometimes broken. George
Balanchine, Twyla Tharp and William Forsythe have all
been influential in the development of this modern
style. This workshop will let students explore the
crossover world of Contemporary Ballet and create
co-authored work based around the themes that are
explored in William Forsythe’s In the Middle, Somewhat
Elevated.
In this interactive workshop, you will get the rare
opportunity to learn repertoire from the classic
production and explore the themes of this work. This
workshop can be crafted around student skill level and
will also discuss the other elements of ballet such as
costume design, music and narrative themes.

Watch House Experience at Old
Melbourne Gaol
Court Room Dramas at Old
Melbourne Gaol
The former City Watch House operated as Melbourne’s
central custody centre or ‘holding place’ for people
arrested and awaiting trial. The Watch House
experience offers a rich learning opportunity where
students become active participants in a unique
encounter with the justice system as they are
processed and ‘charged with a crime’.
Students become active participants by re-enacting
an authentic trial taking the roles of: prosecutor,
defence counsel, judge, offender, jury, witnesses and
even vocal public gallery members. Students examine
the values and attitudes of the past and present in the
real atmosphere of Old Magistrates Court Number
One. At the end of the case students will explore the
human rights, citizenship and justice issues that are
relevant to their world and question whether justice
was served.
Between 1913 and 1994 the City Watch House was the
point of transition between Melbourne’s community
and the justice system. Students actively explore this
confronting place and its people from a number of
different perspectives through role-play, multi-media
interpretation and self-exploration. Students will be
‘arrested’ by a Charge Sergeant and processed
through the lock up, experiencing an authentic
environment left largely unchanged since the last
police and inmates left.
