AKHLAK DEVELOPMENT;
THE STRENGTH OF UMMAH
Prof. Madya Dr. Mohd Ismail bin Mustari
Deputy Director
Islamic Centre of UTM • Dear Brothers,
• Good akhlak or noble character is half of faith, and it is the result of the pious and training of the worshiper. • Good character (akhlak) is the adornment of a person, as in a ceremony, the flower is the ornament, the same thing applies to human being. • A noble character will be the ornament that attracts the heart of other human being, including those with evil in their heart, they will still look up to those with noble characters.
• Bad character is like a poison that kills, destroys, acts despicable, vile, dirty and it refrains oneself from Allah the Almighty has created human being and the universe. • It will also leads those who acted that way to life full of bad desires and Syaitan. • Nowadays various community illness and crisis arise. The root of all these problem points to the decline of good character. • This chronic problem is hard to prevent and has created its own landmark. • Excessive entertainments for instant (concert, dance show and comedy that oppose Islamic Syariah), drug addiction, corruption, adultery, stealing, illegal race, couple before marriage and such. • Hence, that is why it is important to spread good akhlak. With a generation of good moral behaviour, those problem can be prevented and reduced. • The arrival of the Qur'an to the global community is the revelation of Allah, for our beloved Prophet Muhammad. • It is the most potent remedies for various diseases of individuals and communities. • The content in it is has the highest wisdom. It can be achieved by those who really want goodness. • Generally, the Qur'an contained 30 juz and 114 surah in which explained the three most important aspect that lift the human status as Khaira Ummah (The Best Nation). • The important aspects are empowering Faith (Aqidah), Shari'ah and Akhlak. • With a sustainable and strong Aqidah, a servant of Allah will feel obligate to perform Allah’s law. • True faith is the only one that drives a Muslim to get up and execute all the commands of Allah SWT. • Faith is the root stem in the life of a Muslim. Without a strong faith, a person will be like a feather, easily being flown to places by the wind. • They live life with no purpose, clear guidelines and organization for the world and in the Hereafter.
• The importance of Aqidah had been stated in the Quran as followed:
• Which means:
• Then is one who laid the foundation of his building on righteousness [with fear] from Allah and [seeking] His approval better or one who laid the foundation of his building on the edge of a bank about to collapse, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? And Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
• Dear Brothers,
• This verse explains that the priority of a practice should be based on the devotion which hinges on the right belief. • Faith is not stagnant, nor is hidden without manifests. It needs to be translated in conversations, actions, thoughts and behaviour in a Muslim’s life. • Only with the perfection of faith will a person be willing to perform all the Allah’s law. • Without the proper faith, Allah SWT’s law will not be able to be implemented, and thus bias and ignorance will dictate their lives over time. • A person who dared break the rules and laws of Allah SWT has a weak faith (Aqidah).
• Allah swt commanded in surah Al‐
Ahzab verse 36:
• Which means:
• It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, that they should [thereafter] have any choice about their affair. And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly strayed into clear error.
• According to a muffasir, the verse was sent down when the Prophet Muhammad asked for his cousin, Zainab binti Jahsy hand in marriage for his adopted son, Zaid bin Harith. • Zainab turned it down and the verse cam afterwards. In the end, Zainab agreed and married Zaid. • The verse shows one method that has to be followed by the Mu’min in his life, that is, it is not encouraged for a person to choose other that what he was asked with by Allah and by His messenger. • Islam is perfect and complete throughout time, circumstances and place. • It covers all areas of human life from the problems of education, religious, social, economic, political, administrative, legal and so on. • Every Muslim who examine, review, refine and embrace the law of Allah with an open heart, filled with sincerity and devotion, they will gain lesson and wisdom from it like how Allah’s law will save mankind from all the lies and deluded thinking of life, , damage, disobedience, oppression and violence. • It will put human being to a higher status in this world and in the hereafter. • And most importantly, to attain the pleasure of Allah and save from Allah’s wrath. • With the implementation of the Islamic law, a good character will appear.
• This is because Sharia itself seeks to preserve the five fundamental principles of Islam which is to preserve the religion, life, intellect, lineage and property. • Allah said in Surah al‐Ahzab verse 21:
• Which means:
• There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for anyone whose hope is in Allah and the Last Day and [who] remembers Allah often.
• Dear Brothers,
• Saidina Umar ibn al‐Khattab once talked about the nobility of a person, he said, as narrated by Hakim:
• We were the most humiliated people of earth and Allah gave us honour through Islam. If we ever seek honour through anything else, Allah will humiliate us again. • An arab poet on recite:
• When the iman is gone from a person, there is no peace anymore,
• The world has no meaning for those who didn’t give life to his religion,
• Hence those who are satisfied with a world without religion,
• He has make destruction as his friend.
• The words of Saidina Umar and the Arab poet shows that we can’t live life according to us but it has to be in line with the Quran and al‐
Sunnah. • A good character is the manifestation of willingness and readiness to practice Sharia and the readiness to practice Sharia is the manifestation of strong faith. • The three aspects can’t be separated in Islam as it is inter‐
connected. • Any immoral problems are associated with the faith of the individual. For example, dating among students at the lecture hall, in the lake, cafeteria, recreation parks, night market and in other public places. • The culture of excessive concerts and entertainment, and put the artists as idols. Also, corruption among the society, incest, and many other examples are happening in our society. • Everything that happens, as we observed, is the result of the lack of faith which is the base of character building.
• An Arab poet, Syaukani said:
• An orphan is not those who has no parents,
• Suffering life and abandon humiliation,
• But an orphan is those,
• That has a mother who ignore them and father who busied with works.
• A problematic akhlak is connected to the foundation of early education in a family and it will widen to the community, school, neighbourhood, university and country. • An arab poet said:
• Indeed, the benefits of a community depends on the character • And when the character is lost then the people perish
• Dear Brothers,
• Rasulullah s.a.w once said:
• The most perfect man in his faith among the believers is the one whose behaviour is most excellent.
• Rasulullah says as recorded by Imam Muslim:
• “The one who innovates a good innovation in Islam has its reward and a reward similar to those who follow him in it until the Day of Judgment without lessening their reward. • The one who innovates an innovation of misguidance would be sinful for it and has sins similar to those who follow him in it until the Day of Judgment without lessening their sins.”
• Therefore every Muslim should be aware of the contribution that they give in this world. • Every planning has to be in accordance with the Islamic requirements then they will receive rewards and blessing for it and when it was followed by others, his wage will continue without reducing the reward of those who follow him. • Similarly, if those plan’s foundation is to create wrongdoings, he will be sinned and continue sinning for others.
• Let us all improve our conduct in accordance with the teachings of Islam. • Stay away from all kinds of sins and evil. We are responsible in leading the community and prevent them from doing evil. • Dear brothers, let us empower al‐
amr bil ma’ruf and al‐nahy anil munkar in UTM. • This is because the best is akhlak is of those who relates a deep understanding of faith, syariah and akhlak according to the Quran and Sunnah. O servant of Allah, remember that this world is a place for temporary lodging. Truly, hereafter is the everlasting and permanent abode. So let us devote to Allah for obtaining happiness and escape from the punishment of hellfire.
• Allah says in Surah Al Ahzab verse 56:
• Which means:
“Indeed Allah confers blessing upon the prophet and His angels (ask Him to do so). O! You who have believed, ask Allah to confer blessing upon him and ask Allah to grant him peace.”
• Let us pray that may Allah SWT be
please with the khalifahs of
