Thank You for Helping
Thank you to all who assisted with the move to the
new elementary school. Your time and generosity
was greatly appreciated by all. Large projects of this
nature do not happen without the help of many, and
we were pleased to have the help of many.
We would also like to thank the following people for
providing not only their help but equipment and
other items.

One Act Qualifies for State
Stanley County One-Act members qualified for
state competition in their performance of The
Staggering Heartbreak of Jasmine Merriweather by
Don Zolidis on January 22. The cast and crew
competed against six other teams at the Region
VII-B contest. Stanley County’s Hailey N. and
Kevin B. garnered two of the nine superior actor
awards presented in the regional competition.
The fourteen members will now compete in Brandon Valley at the State One-Act Contest February
5-9. We wish them the very best at State!
A big thank you also goes out to the Moving Committee who spent numerous hours planning and working
on this project. Their dedication allowed for the
whole process to flow extremely smoothly. The
committee members included: Melissa Crawford
(chair), Darla Tibbs, Shari Beeghly, Maria Scott, Alberta Rouse, and Ashleigh Baker.
Six SC Groups Qualify for Academic
Achievement Award
Stanley County had six of their extra-curricular
groups qualify for academic achievement awards for
the fall activity season. Initiated during the 1996-1997
school year and sponsored by the South Dakota High
School Activities Association, the program was designed to recognize students for their academic excellence. The award is open to only varsity level
teams in sports and fine arts activities. In order to
qualify, the cumulative grade point average of the
group must be a minimum of 3.0. Qualifying for the
honor were All-State Chorus, Football, Girl’s and
Boy’s Cross Country, Volleyball, and Football Cheerleaders. Congratulations to our hard-working extracurricular groups!

In Memoriam
We are saddened on the sudden loss of our
crossing guard, Arlen Keyser. He was a wonderful man who looked forward to seeing our students every day, and who did his best to keep
them safe while crossing the highway.
Parent/Teacher Conferences will be held February 12th, from 1-7pm.
NHS students will be serving walking tacos for $3.00 each. School
will be dismissed at 12:30 that day.

Donation
Stanley County Schools would like to extend a thank you to the South
Dakota Retailers Association for a donation of tables and chairs. The
new items are being used in the newly established conference room in
Parkview. We also would like to thank Commtech for donating and

tickets for a buffalo star quilt donated by Cody and Lila Briggs. Tickets
are available at all home contests. The drawing for the quilt will be
held at the soup cook-off on February 20th.
Carnival Scheduled
The annual school carnival is scheduled for Thursday, April 3rd. Anyone interested in having a booth at the carnival should contact Leah
Peterson at 223-7745, extension 319.
Kindergarten Round-up
Stanley County Elementary will be holding its Kindergarten Round-up
on February 6-7, 2014, at the elementary school. It is important to
call and schedule an appointment. Sessions will be scheduled the evening of February 6 and the morning of February 7.
Kindergarten Round-up is designed for children who will be five years
old prior to September 1, 2014, and who live in Stanley County or
are interested in attending Stanley County Elementary. During the
round-up, children will go through a screening process to determine
their readiness for kindergarten. While children are being screened,
parents will participate in an informational meeting regarding the school
and preparing for kindergarten.
This screening process is very important not only for your child but for
the school as well. The school will also need a copy of your child’s
certified birth certificate and immunization records; bringing these to
your round-up appointment would be greatly appreciated. Please call
Krista Kerns in the elementary office at 223-7745, extension
301 to set up your appointment.
APPLY NOW!! As you apply for colleges/universities/technical schools, seek out specific scholarships these programs offer. Call admissions offices and ask what scholarships are available, and if you have decided on a program of study, call this specific office and ask what scholarships are available, as well. For example, if you have
decided on majoring in Nursing, call the Nursing department on campus and ask them directly for scholarship
opportunities within their program. It is surprising how often scholarships go unfilled simply because no one applies. There is never harm in asking!
Also, even though many of these scholarship deadlines are a ways out yet, start looking over applications and
starting the process. Some of the applications require much more time to complete than others, so be sure you
give yourself adequate time to put together a quality application. Begin requesting letters of recommendation
to include with applications.

for possible scholarships or grants.

59 Years and Counting at SC
At a Cronin Thanksgiving dinner a few years ago, several of the Cronin
siblings began discussing how many consecutive years a Cronin family
member has attended school in the Fort Pierre/Stanley County Schools.
2014 marks the 59th consecutive year that there has been a Cronin
enrolled in the school district. Obviously, the “original” siblings have
graduated long ago, but some of them still have their children and grandchildren in the district, with more to come but who are not old enough
to attend just yet.
Robert and Mary Cronin had 11children: 6 girls and 5 boys. Two were
called to be with God when they were young, and the remaining nine
walked through the doors of Stanley County Schools. Additionally, two
of the spouses also graduated from SC, and seven of their children have
graduated, with more still in school.
Mary Cronin still lives in the best town there is – Fort Pierre, in the best
county there is – Stanley County. She is very proud of every one of her
children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren and their accomplishments, and she is a big supporter in any activity or community function
of which they are a part.
Cronins to have passed through the doors of Stanley County are: Carol,
Dan, Sheila, Larry and his wife Sandy Nickles, Buddy and his wife
Danette Bergeson, Kathy, Pat, Cherie, and Rick. The next generation
consisting of Kevin, Kelli, Kirby, Shane, Shaun, Steven, Stephanie, Nate (a
senior), Kaycee (a sophomore), and Campbell (1st grade) have graduated
or are in the district currently. Youngest Cronin members Sayth and
Connelly are too young to be in school, but both live in Fort Pierre.
Thank You!!
Thank you to all who volunteered in any way during the
move to the new elementary school building. It was a
HUGE job and your help was greatly appreciated. A
special thanks to Mrs. Lutz, Mr. Burgaard and Ms. Petersen who stuck with us on both the 19th and 20th to
see the job completed. Things would not have gone so
smoothly or quickly without you!
This past Thanksgiving the family decided that it would be proper to
take one last photo with the “old” school before it is torn down. When
the former elementary building was newly opened, Carol had just
started school, and most recently, Campbell had been attending class in
that building. The Cronin family and others made many good friendships
and memories between those years. They now look forward to many
more memories and good times in the new facility. If the Cronin family
is any indicator, those memories will be made for a very, very long time.

Elementary Math/Literacy Night
Mark your calendars! On Monday, March 31, the elementary staff will be hosting a FAMILY math and literacy night. This will be an evening with fun, interactive
family activities based around math and reading, and the
best part is it is FREE. More details will be coming as
the date approaches.
Thank you to Pizza Ranch and Total
Beauty for sponsoring Little Buffs of
the Month!

SC Booster Club Amends
Scholarship Qualifications
The Stanley County Booster Club is again offering two $500.00
scholarships for Stanley County graduating seniors. Selection
will be made on basis of need, school participation, and character. However, there is an important new requirement. A
parent/guardian must have worked in the concession
stand twice during each school year the student is enrolled in Stanley County. Since this is the first year of
this requirement, graduating seniors are still eligible if
your parent/guardian works 2 times THIS school year
even if they have not served in the concession stand
any years prior to this 2013-2014 school year. The tracking of this requirement begins now for classes graduating in
2014, 2015, and 2016. See Mrs. Gill for application. The
applications must be postmarked by MARCH 28th.
(Applications must be mailed. No hand-delivered applications
will be accepted).

FCCLA Districts
Six members of the Stanley County FCCLA Chapter recently
traveled to Huron to participate in the District VII FCCLA
meeting. They met with 200 other students from 8 neighboring
chapters to take part in various activities sponsored by this
student-run organization.
Contests, known as STAR Events, took place at this meeting.
STAR stands for Students Taking Action for Recognition.
Events that students participated in at the meeting included
Illustrated Talk and Job Interview. The following students from
Stanley County competed: Kelsey V. and Cassidy C., GOLD;
and Matiah H. and Kalli D., SILVER. Students with a GOLD rating advanced to the state meeting in Sioux Falls in April. Student members also participated
in several different activities,
including the District VII FCCLA
Talent Show, Chinese Auction,
and a photo booth.
th
Ms. Clair’s 5 grade class did a Mystery Skype call to another 5th grade
class in another state during computer
class time. We had to ask them questions about their state and town and
they asked us questions until we found
where they lived. We asked 30 questions before we discovered that they lived in Mondamin, Iowa.
They only needed to ask us 23 questions to find our town. We
had to use maps and team work. We didn’t need much help
from the teachers. This activity was fun and very educational.

Hollar/Glodt Recognized
Stanley County Schools’ principals Timothy Hollar and Michelle
Glodt were both honored at the 2014 State Conference of the
SD Association of Elementary and Secondary School Principals
in January. Mr. Hollar was awarded with the Region 6 High
School Principal of the Year award from the SD Association of
Secondary School Principals, while Mrs. Glodt was nominated
in two special award categories: Rookie of the Year, and Instructional Leader. We congratulate our principals on their
recognitions!
Capital Art Show
SC art students participated in the biannual Students' Capital
Art Show. Each Legislative District is represented in this competition. Our district is made up of Sully, Hughes, and Stanley
County. The three SC students who participated were
Megan A., Chance M., and Hailey N. These students were the
only winners in our district. The winning pieces will be printed
on totes, and the students will get to present these totes to
their legislators. We congratulate our young artists!

Fundraising Opportunities
Stanley County Elementary continues to collect Box Tops for
Education and Labels for Education. The money from the box
tops goes into our playground fund and the points from Campbell’s are used to purchase school items from their catalog.
We appreciate all the support parents and community members give us in this area. If you have any of these items you may
send them to school with your child or drop them off at the
elementary office.

Rodeo Club Competes
Members of the Fort Pierre/Pierre
rodeo club are heading to Rapid
City this weekend to compete in
the 20X High School Rodeo held in
conjunction with the Black Hills
Livestock and Rodeo. Sutton Rodeo
invites the top competitors in each
of the four regions to compete for
buckles, prizes and bragging rights.
This year the rodeo is on Sunday,
February 1, at 2:00 pm CT. Three
students from Stanley County will
be competing: Robert Tolton (sr.)
team roping, Bailey Tibbs (sr.)
break-away roping, and Casey Heninger (jr.) bull riding.
The Fort Pierre/Pierre High School
rodeo club would like to thank all
of the people who participated in
our NFR fundraiser. It was a great
success and provided some fun
while watching the NFR. Congratulations to our winners.
Our next meeting will be held February 5 at 6:30 pm in Mrs. Wolf’s
classroom.

Coaches Needed
Stanley County plans to offer Girls on the Run (3rd-5th grade) and Girls on Track (6th-8th grade) this spring. These interactive programs strive to educate and prepare girls for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Volunteer coaches
need not be runners; they just need to be individuals who want to be a positive influence and who are committed to
developing and celebrating our youth. The programs will meet two days a week from 3:30-4:45pm; days of the week
not yet specified. They will start the first week in March and end mid-May.
The program is dependent of volunteer coaches. If you would like to help out with one or the other, or would like more
information, please contact Andrea Siemonsma (605-310-6720) or [email protected].
Parents, Please Note:
FEBRUARY 18-21 – ELEMENTARY DROP OFF
Demolition of the old K-2 building will be in full swing beginning on Friday, February 14. Sharpe Construction is going to use
that long weekend to get a majority of the potentially dangerous work completed. However, due to continued work and clean
up following the demolition, we are asking that elementary students, KG to 5 th grade, use the south doors to enter and exit the
building for the week on February 18-21. These are the doors on the same street as the MS/HS entrance. No students should
be using the west or north doors during this week.
RECAP NOTICE: During the week of February 18-21, all elementary students are to use only the south doors to the
building to enter or exit the school.
