This summer break we will see the renovation of all classrooms in Years 1, 2 and 3. Furniture and flooring will be replaced, the classroom windows will be enlarged and the corridors will be upgraded. Students have ‘road tested’ some of the furniture options available and they are excited about the new designs. We are looking at options to upgrade the play area at the rear of the Year 1 classrooms. We have been working with a landscape architect and his concept plans are currently being shared with the students and the PTA. This work is scheduled to take place during October 2015 to April 2016. Principal’s Message Year 1 Classroom Design Proposal Corridor Design Proposal The Years 4, 5 and 6 areas of the school and the specialist rooms (Performing Arts, ICT, Music and Design Technology rooms will be upgraded during the summer break of 2016. Year 2 & 3 Classroom Design Proposal Principal’s Message The cost of the project will be shared between the school and ESF and the PTA will look to fund the playground project. We will be writing to you separately regarding specific fund raising activities for the project. These have already started with the Year 5 team opting to donate some of the proceeds from Market Day to the project and the PTA ear-marking profits from the Family Sports Fun Day last Sunday. Performing Arts Room Design Proposal Best regards, Perry Tunesi Principal’s Message Following the whole school assembly, students were invited to submit entries for a decorated egg competition. Many interesting entries were received and the overall winner was an impressive entry from Sylvia from 5.4. Congratulations also go to Valerie from 1.3 whose colourful egg won the runner-up prize. Special mentions go to: Hannah F (4.3), Josephine (4.3), Harsha (5.4), Annie (1.3), Tabitha (1.4), Jennifer (1.4) Nicole (6.2), Amber (5.1), Anneke (5.2), Michelle (5.5) and Janice (4.2) who all contributed excellent entries and received a small prize. Easter Eggs Story Purple Cake Day During Book Week, many students enjoyed dressing up in purple or as a book character. It was a purplicious day, featuring purple socks, hair, clothes, and even purple snacks! The Years 1 to 3 parade of book characters and purple, left our community bubbling with excitement. The learning centre showcased a display of purple books and students had the opportunity to learn more about the Purple Cake Day organisation. Our community has raised HKD 7,224! The donation was then made online through this link and will be utilised to support children worldwide to receive the education they need to break the poverty cycle and create a better future for themselves, their families and their communities. Thanks to everyone for their collaboration and support towards this cause. Purple Cake Day Nepal Relief Efforts After the unfortunate news of the disaster in Nepal over the weekend, our community practised our commitment and empathy with respect and collaboration! The students raised HKD10,637.60 through the donation efforts! The coins were displayed in the shape of the Himalayan Range and by the end of the day, all the mountain’s peaks were covered in “ice”! The money was presented to Mr. Bhotia who purchased water purification tablets. Mr. Bhotia is part of our parent community and he will be representing SJS in Nepal and is grateful for the contribution. The tablets will be distributed locally in Nepal and will support all those in need. A big thanks to everyone in our community for coming together in support of this cause. Nepal Relief Efforts Morning Tears Collaboration Year 6 students enjoyed receiving their massive return gift from learners in Zhengzhou under the care of The Morning Tears Foundation. After our Year 6 students had sent them Chinese New Years greetings, they were curious to find out what their new friends had sent them. Once the package was unveiled, students at SJS were pleased to see the banner that was created for them. The banner has been on display in the roof for a couple weeks for all the children to enjoy. Many thanks to our friends at the Morning Tears Foundation for their continued collaboration. Morning Tears Collaboration Sports Fun Day We had a great time last Sunday at the first ever PTA Family Sports Fun Day. Mum’s, Dad’s and children came along to join in the fun. The children were able to try out a number of different sports under the expert guidance of professional coaches. Training and matches were set up for football, basketball, badminton and table tennis. Other highlights were the parent - child games and races. The obstacle race was especially competitive! It was a wonderful fun-filled afternoon were families came together and the memories will last for a long time. Sarah Brennan’s message: Hello again! I just wanted to let you know that the results of my Shaggy Sheep Poem competition have just been published on the Clever Competiton page on my blog and the two Sha Tin Junior students who entered did a great job! I was looking for excellent vocabulary, great ideas, good spelling, and especially, something to make me smile! In addition I judged the poems on correct length (no more than 16 lines), correct subject matter (ram, sheep or goat), originality, style, whether it all made sense, and that crucial, hard-to-define X factor :)! The judging took quite a while, as you can imagine, and the kids have been very patient. But yesterday the results were posted, and today I have written to everyone who won a place or a special mention, and their teacher or librarian, to let them know the result. Congratulations to: Jared of class 4.4 this time, his poem did make the Long List, which given the high number of entries is an achievement in itself! Please do let Jared know, as while I am writing to all the place winners in each category and their teachers, I can’t report individually to all the kids on the Short and Longlists (or my fingers will fall off :))! And do visit my blog to see Hillary’s winning entry! Hillary of class 6.3 for their successful entries. Hillary won Third Place in the Grade 4 to 6 Category with her superb free verse poem, and while Jared didn’t win a place Sarah Brennan’s Blog: http://www.sarahbrennanblog.com Sarah Brennan 1 ril Ap School Dental Care Service ay M 20 Public Holiday - Labour Day 6 ay SJS Exhibition M To provide basic dental treatment to students, we cooperate with the Department of Health to organise the School Dental Care Service. Disclaimer Trust Life’s Journey The presentation will take you on a roller coaster ride of a mother and son’s journey through the typical and not so typical landscape called life. You will learn how this tragedy has inspired Nicola to see life from a totally different perspective becoming the individual she was born to be. Nicola Clark was born in New Zealand. She has lived over 22 years in Asia. She initially worked as an accountant until her life was turned upside down by unforeseen circumstances that she discovered her true vocational passion. A passion that began out of a situation of sheer agony... A passion that began out of a situation of sheer agony, when in 1998 living in Hong Kong, she learned that her son contracted meningitis, leaving him with many challenges. It was then that Nicola’s life took on a whole new role, that of being a mother to a ‘special needs’ boy. This led her to a role as a Disability Consultant for families and individuals with disabilities. Whilst in Hong Kong, Nicola was heavily involved with ESF. She worked as a Business Manager at two of the secondary schools. Also served as a Community Member on the West Island School council as well as on the ESF Board of Governors. Nicola currently works part-time as an Advisor for Disability Connect. There, she advises individuals with disabilities and their families about the disability sector in New Zealand. She is also working on her next book. Dear Members and Friends, F.O.C.U.S. will be offering an Intensive Summer Reading and Language Arts Program for children aged 6-12. The classes will be led by experienced master’s degree reading specialists from the USA. The format is highly individualised instruction that is tailored to each child’s learning needs and is complemented by small group interaction with a teacher-student ratio of 1:3. WHY THE SUMMER READING PROGRAM? Effective reading instruction can prevent or improve reading problems in many youngsters. Children with Specific Learning Difficulties (SLD) and AD/HD may need more intensive instruction and greater opportunities for practice than do regular achieving reader in order to learn to read well. Providing this kind of intensive help as early as possible is essential because reading difficulties often become more difficult to remediate over time. WHAT WILL YOUR CHILD GET OUT OF THE CLASS? Assessment and on-going review of child’s reading profile Education instruction and remediation which will address key reading-related abilities: • Phonemic awareness (awareness of individual sounds in spoken words) • Phonics knowledge (knowledge of letter sounds and word patterns) • Decoding Skills (using the context, pictures, and knowledge of letter sounds and syllables to read unfamiliar words) • Fluency (reading with appropriate expression, intonation, rate, and volume) • comprehension (Activating background knowledge, understanding text structure, self-monitoring, making predictions and connections, and inferring) A multi-sensory approach to reading and an individually tailored reading and writing program will be used to strengthen the child’s literacy skills and confidence.
