The 2008 awardees are Lee and Dolly Butz (shown above) for their outstanding lifetime assistance to children and to the Women’s Leadership Initiative for their development of women (Katie Loeb-Schwab, current president (shown above, right); founded by Betsy Torrance). The 13th Annual Donley Awards and Children’s Gala, CSC’s major fundraising event, will be held Friday, October 17, 2008, 6 p.m., at the Candlelight Inn. Dr. Arthur Rothkopf, President Emeritus of Lafayette College, and currently Senior Vice President of the US Chamber of Commerce and Special Counsel to the President, will provide the keynote address regarding the importance of investing in quality early education for a competitive workforce in the future and for wise community development. Tony Iannelli, Executive Director of the Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce, will be master of ceremony at the event. Members of the Donley Children’s Gala Committee include Linda Anthony, David Ellowitch, Jane Ervin, Sara George, Donna Haggerty, Margot Hillman, Valerie Holt, Colby J. Kent, Kathy Leber, Katie Loeb-Schwab, Helena Lindquist, Shirley Miller, Linda Nabb, Gerry Riegger, Peter Schurman, and Jared Steckel. PBS-39 is preparing a special tribute to Mr. and Mrs. Donley, for whom the Award is named, in honor of their many years of devoted service to this community, the state, and the country. This video will have its debut at the October 17th event. In addition to the Awards Presentation and Keynote Address, entertainment will be provided by the Jazz Fusion Trio. Rothkopf serves as senior vice president and counselor to the president of the US Chamber. His responsibilities include leadership of the Chamber’s Education and Workforce Initiative, including the nonprofit Institute for a Competitive Workforce. In addition, he is responsible for supervising the National Chamber Foundation, a nonprofit public policy think tank affiliated with the chamber. He also supervises the Business Civic Leadership Center, a nonprofit affiliate of the Chamber dedicated to improved business and society relations. He served for 12 years as president of Lafayette College and was deputy secretary of the Department of Transportation during President George Herbert Walker Bush’s administration. He began his career as a layer specializing in tax, regulation and legislation. His law degree is from Harvard. He completed his undergraduate degree at Lafayette. She has helped with vital information Fall Conference to Address Depressed Moms CSC’s Institute for Child and Family Development will hold a full-day conference November 14, 2008, entitled “How Maternal Depression Affects Babies and Young Children.” Program presenters are well-known, published experts in their field: Dr. Roseanne Clark and Dr. Andres Pumariega. The conference will be held at the Best Western Hotel & Conference Center. Two Rivers Health & Wellness Foundation is the Speaker Sponsor for the conference. Crayola has provided additional support. It is not uncommon for mothers to experience depression soon after childbirth and during the first year of the baby’s life. The prevalence, symptoms, and risks associated with postpartum depression and the impact on maternal functioning, mother-infant and family relationships, and consequences for child development and subsequent psychopathology will be described and explored in this conference. Presenters will discuss strategies for early screening and identification of postpartum depression, as well as assessment and treatment approaches for supporting positive family relationships, emotions, attention, and behavior regulation in young children. Volunteer Shirley Miller, Air Products “A man never stands so tall as when he stoops to help a child.” Photos by Jack Lerch, Air Products Bits -n- Pieces Baum Art Students Beautify CSC Under the direction of Rosemary Geseck, a teacher with the Baum Art School, eight high school students are painting a mural for the reception area in the Levin Administration Building at the Donley Children’s Campus to enhance our “family-friendly” environment. Students include Reed Baum, Shay Baum, Matt Chernasky, Sandra Kanapathy, Kaitlyn M. May, Abbey Rosko, Dani Savaki, and Mia Walton. Susquehanna Bank Helps Classrooms A big thank you to Randy Wenhold, Assistant Vice President and Branch Manager at Susquehanna Bank’s 11th & Hamilton branch, for spearheading a Back to School book and supply drive on behalf of CSC’s Allentown Pre-K Counts School, which is moving into new classrooms down the street from the bank this September. CSC Expands Pre-K Counts Thanks to Gov. Ed Rendell and the PA Legislature, the free preschool program for low-income families was expanded for the next school year. CSC was awarded funds for 20 additional students, bringing the total to 140 in our program. In September, 120 preschoolers attend CSC’s Pre-K Counts School in Allentown and 20 in Easton. child Development Expert Joins Staff Pamela Cho recently joined the staff as the new Director of Child Development Services. She will lead the child development services area of the home-based Early Head Start and Head Start programs. Ms. Cho earned her master’s degree in social work from the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Social Work. Her undergraduate degree is from Emory University in Atlanta. Haymon Joins Board Elsbeth Haymon recently joined the CSC Board of Directors. Currently she is the Director of Development for the Allentown Art Museum. She has a long career in development, including CSC’s capital campaign for the Donley Children’s Campus, Wildlands Conservancy, and Farr Healey Consulting. Toshiba, other business partners, raise funds New Pre-K Counts school Opens in Allentown The building gods were with us this past summer and CSC was able to secure a lease for the former Verizon Building at 11th & Linden in Allentown. With enough space for all six Pre-K Counts classrooms, CSC is moving its once scattered classrooms under one roof, making for easier administration. The building is owned by Mark Smith Realty. Kudos especially to Jim LeVan, Business Team Manager, Toshiba, for conceiving and spearheading a recycling event to raise money for CSC. Toshiba Customer Service Rep. Casey DeCeia was instrumental in coordinating with recycler Shawn Erie, Regional Sales Manager for AERC/ Comcyle. Lehigh Valley Economic Development Corp. and the Eastern Pennsylvania Business Journal assisted efforts by promoting the event through their networks.
