Mitchell is best known as the home of the World’s Only
Corn Palace, yet many don’t realize the Palace truly stands
for enterprise, pride and community. This icon of innovation
has stood the test of time, continually changing its colors,
architecture, and community purpose as the city itself has
grown and changed. This year is no
exception, as the Corn Palace completed
a renovation project to create an even
better experience for our visitors.
While in Mitchell, don’t miss our other
great attractions. The Prehistoric Indian
Village, Dakota Discovery Museum,
McGovern Legacy Museum, and
Carnegie Resource Center await you with stories to tell. Be
sure to visit our unique specialty shops. Outdoor enthusiasts
will find a broad array of hunting, fishing, golf, bike trails, and
camping opportunities, including those along the shores of
Lake Mitchell.
Mitchell is a unique and surprising place, home to over 15,000
friendly folks who believe in hard work, growth, community
and family. We sit outside of expectations as a home to
a university, a technical institute, more than 65 medical
providers, state-of-the-art technology, award-winning public
education, an active young professionals group, and hundreds
of family-owned businesses. We strive to outthink, outproduce
and outperform to make this an outstanding community for all.
Welcome to Mitchell. I hope you enjoy your stay with us!

RECALLS THE PAST
If you haven’t been to see the
World’s Only Corn Palace
lately, you might do a double
take this year. The familiar onion
domes have been replaced with
leafy, organic sculptures that
recall the traditional domes
of years past. Also, a balcony
has been added over the Main
Street entrance, giving visitors a
sweeping view of downtown
Mitchell and an up-close look
at the Corn Palace itself.
What has not changed are the unique
corn murals. Although the Corn Palace
dates back to1892, it transforms itself
each fall -- with real corn. Some 275,000
colorful ears are carefully sliced and nailed
into place on the murals that adorn the
building. It’s all done by hand, a folk art
form that is all but lost -- except at the
World’s Only Corn Palace.
Local farmers plant 12 different colors of
corn in carefully separated plots to ensure
plants don’t crosspollinate and dilute the
purity of the colors.
Local artist Cherie
Ramsdell composes

of ryegrass and sour

plant, are stapled to

Corn Palace Education Center
A cure for stircrazy kids
After spending time in the car, kids need to let off a little steam. There’s a great new place at
the World’s Only Corn Palace where they can do just that.
The Corn Palace Education Center, in the armory gym on the second floor, is part fun zone
and part corn museum. To get there, go to the Corn Palace’s new balcony, the entrance to the
Education Center is right there.
“The idea is to get kids more involved,” said Scott Schmidt, Corn Palace Director.

Young visitors will likely find a sandbox of corn k ernels instead of pebbles of sand and
perhaps an indoor corn maze. In another part of the Corn Palace, kids will find a combine they
can pretend they are driving and a tractor stationed inside the lobby.

The new pump track is a good place if you

track is a continuous loop dirt trail with
lots of berms and “rollers” (smooth hills).
The idea is to use the downhill momentum
on the backside of the rollers to propel
you into the next roller. If you do it right,
pedaling is minimal.

Plains of South Dakota through artifacts,
photos, memorabilia and structures that
have been preserved.
Learn about our Native American
inhabitants and their Plains culture that
flourished before European settlers arrived.
Tour the tanned buffalo-hide tipi or the
buffalo mural at the Middle Border History
Gallery. Learn about the early settlers of
America and the impact of the fur trade and
the Gold Rush on the early inhabitants.
To get a real sense of early Midwestern life,
it’s all aboard at the Dimock Depot! Visitors
can also walk through the period-era
Beckwith House, built in 1886 for Louis and
Mary Beckwith. At the Dimock Depot, you

continue to uncover.

It now features a spectacular new
entrance and gift shop, said Cindy Gregg,
executive director. In addition, the
exhibits, and audio/visual displays have
also been updated.
And if you’ve never been to the museum,
you’re in for a treat.
More than a century after its 1910
discovery by a student from Dakota
Wesleyan University, the Mitchell
Prehistoric Indian Village is still revealing
new clues about the lives of the
people who lived here 1,100 years
ago. As a National Historic Landmark,
it has been called one of the most
significant archeological sites in the
Northern Great Plains.
On this site, near what is now Lake
Mitchell, an estimated 200 inhabitants
grew corn, beans, squash and other
crops. They also processed bison,
extracting the animal’s bone grease to
make pemmican, a high-energy food made
of meat and dried fruit.
Boehnen Memorial Museum
Inside the Boehnen Memorial Museum,
you will see a reconstructed earthen lodge
and some of the 1.5 million artifacts that
have been recovered. A live-interactive
excavation site, exhibits, and children’s
activities are also available. A student
library and video room are available to
learn more about artifacts and life in
the Indian village.
It’s much more than a garden. Audrey’s
Garden is a place where visitors can learn
how prehistoric villagers subsisted 1,100
years ago. The garden is filled with the
same plants that the villagers grew for
food, medicine, dyes and other basic
needs. With two benches, interpretive signs
and an accompanying booklet, Audrey’s is
a tranquil and informative setting.

Carnegie
Resource
CENTER
History and art have found
a home at the Carnegie
Resource Center, a few
blocks from the Mitchell
Corn Palace. Of special
note is the colorful mural
painted on the domed
ceiling by well-known
Native American
artist Oscar Howe.
Howe, born on the Crow Creek Reservation
in 1915, developed a distinctive painting
style that continues to influence Native
American artists today. His early work
reflected more traditional representational
styles of Native American art. He later
began painting in a more abstract
style, a move not popular among some
traditionalists. In 1958, one of his paintings
was rejected by the Philbrook Museum
because his work didn’t fit “traditional”
Indian style.
“Are we to be held back forever with one
phase of Indian painting that is the most
common way?” Howe wrote in protest.
His painting was ultimately accepted
by the museum.
For years, Howe designed the corn murals
that adorned the World’s Only Corn Palace.
Today the Oscar Howe Art Gallery on the
second floor of the Corn Palace displays
many of his works.
In the Depression era, he was hired by
the Works Progress Administration paint
murals in South Dakota. His 1940 mural,
“Sun and Rain Clouds Over Hills,” in the
dome of the Carnegie Resource Center, is
one of his most well-known pieces.
His first day of work on the dome did
not go well: The paint he chose did not
stand up to the heat of summer. When he
returned for his second day, he discovered
that the previous work had been ruined.
Undaunted, Howe chose a more durable
paint and started over.
The former Carnegie Library was
constructed in 1903 with funds from steel
tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Like his other
namesake libraries, Carnegie lavished the
Mitchell library with elaborate exterior
stone work, classic wood trim and a
spacious and open interior.
Today the Carnegie Resource Center is
home to the Mitchell Area Historical Society
and the Mitchell Area Genealogical Society.
The center houses a permanent collection
of Corn Palace memorabilia going back to
1892, when the first Corn Palace was built.
You will also find changing historical and
genealogical exhibits, extensive documents
for research, prints by Oscar Howe and
an impressive collection of historic photos
from the Mitchell area.
The Corn Palace collection includes a
fascinating array of old playbills,
posters, photos and flyers that
advertised the vaudeville and other
entertainment that passed through the
Corn Palace over the years.

CUP
RACE
COMES TO MITCHELL
The world’s largest
cross-country air race
begins at the Mitchell
Municipal Airport from Friday,
July 22, to Sunday, July 24.
It’s called the Experimental
Aircraft Association
AirVenture Cup Race,
an annual trek to the EAA
Airventure Fly-In Convention
in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
In 2014, during the last AirVenture Cup
Race, 60 aircraft gathered at Mitchell
Municipal Airport for the event. Organizer
Todd Shannon expects at least that many
planes this year.
On Saturday, July 23, Mitchell Municipal
Airport and Wright Brothers Aviation open
the doors to the public from 9 a.m. to 5
p.m. Visitors can see the aircraft, talk to
the pilots, see classic cars and learn more
about experimental aircraft. Pilots also put
on the Young Eagles Day, where kids age 8
to 17 can take a ride in an airplane for free.

The Young Eagle rides have been especially
popular, Shannon said. The last time the
race started in Mitchell, pilots gave 260
rides to young individuals during the
open house. “It’s really gratifying for the
pilots, and the kids love it. For many of
them, it’s the first time they’ve been in an
airplane,” he said.
The public is also welcome to return
Sunday morning to watch the start
of the race, which is scheduled to
begin at 9:30 a.m.
Founded in 1998, the AirVenture Cup Race
has become one of the most successful
racing events in aviation. Pilots of every
background come together for the
AirVenture Cup Race.
Bring the family and lawn chairs, for a
day of aviation fun.

Get Charged Up!
Drivers of the Tesla electric car can pull into Mitchell to top
off their batteries, have a bite to eat and do some shopping.
The Mitchell Tesla Charging Station right off Interstate 90
offers free charges for the Tesla Model S electric sedan.
The six chargers are located on Havens Avenue, between the
County Fair Food Store and Dairy Queen. Twenty to thirty
minutes of charge will power three hours of travel, just about
enough to make it to the next charging station in Rapid City
to the west or Sioux Falls to the east.

the
great
outdoors
ARE JUST OUTSIDE MITCHELL
Retailers cater to hunters,
fishermen, hikers and
campers. South Dakota’s
love of hunting, fishing
and the outdoors is
apparent in Mitchell.
In addition to great
outdoor opportunities
just outside of town,
the city has a number of
businesses geared toward
hunting and fishing.
The plains of eastern South Dakota are
home to one of the richest ringneck
pheasant populations in North America.
Bird hunters from across the United States
flock to the Mitchell area for pheasant
hunting. Guided and youth hunts make
Mitchell a great
place for a
yearly hunt.
Hunters take
about 1 million
pheasants
per year.
Locally owned sporting good stores such

There’s a reason those animal mounts

hidden
treasures
ARE EVERYWHERE
Geocaching used to be an
esoteric hobby for people with
expensive global positioning
system equipment. Now, any
family with a Smartphone
and a sense of adventure can
discover hidden caches,
enjoy the outdoors together
and learn about people and
places off the beaten path.
In the Mitchell area alone, there are
88 geocaches. These little treasures
can be found in spots that range from
obvious to obscure.
What is geocaching? It’s like hide-andseek, but instead of finding other
kids, you’re finding small, waterproof
containers hidden in bushes, next to
a rock, in a tree or some other public
place. Inside the box is a log book and
sometimes a few trinkets that have
been left by fellow geocachers.
Using your GPS-equipped phone and a
geocaching app, you find the treasure,
sign the log and, if you want, leave
something behind. It’s a fun way for
children to learn about navigation,

HEAD TO MITCHELL EACH SUMMER
Rodeo is a sport like no
other American pastime. It
combines the culture of the
Old West with all the
drama and action of
modern athletic competition.
Each year in Mitchell,
three rodeo events
epitomize this Western
tradition and draw many of
the sport’s top competitors.
Corn Palace Stampede
The 46th Annual Corn Palace Stampede
Rodeo comes to the Horseman’s Sports
Arena from Thursday, July 14, to Sunday,
July 17. The action also takes place
downtown, with the Corn Palace Stampede
Rodeo Parade on Main Street on Saturday,
July 16 at 10:30 a.m.
This is a classic Western sporting event
with bull riders, team roping, saddle bronc,
bareback riding, tie-down roping, steer
wrestling and barrel racing. For kids there’s
the Candy Scramble and Mutton Bustin’ –
youngsters trying to stay on the backs of
fast-running sheep. It’s as entertaining for
parents as it is for the young riders.
8-second ride can seem like an eternity – if
they can stay on for 8 seconds.
A free dinner and mixer kicks off Rodeo
week, and other events include a chili
cookoff, cowboy church service and a golf
tournament. Stampede Family Fun Day
includes pony rides, tethered balloon rides,
inflatables, wagon rides and games.
Wilbur-Ellis Corn Palace
Challenge
General admission tickets are $13 ($14
at the door) for adults, $7 for children
age 4 to 12 and free to kids 3 and under.
Reserved seating tickets are $17.
Miller Lite Bull Bash
On Wednesday, Aug. 17, the Miller Lite Bull
Bash concentrates on the most actionpacked rodeo event of all – bull riding.
More than 40 competitors will take their
turn trying to stay atop a one-ton animal
that is surprisingly agile. For a bull rider, an

The Miller Lite Bull Bash also features the
Kids Candy Scramble and Mutton Bustin’
for kids ages 4-7, under 60 pounds. Gates
open at 6 p.m., showbegins promptly at
7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults ($9 in
advance) and $5 for children.
On Friday and Saturday, October 21-22, the
sport of rodeo goes indoors. The WilbwurEllis Corn Palace Challenge features three
performances inside the World’s Only
Corn Palace Arena. The top riders from the
Championship Bull Riding circuit and the
top PRCA bronc riders will be on hand.
With indoor rodeo, there’s no such thing as
a bad seat. Spectators get an up-close view
of the arena action – but not too up-close.
The Friday bull-riding event begins at 7:30
pm. The top riders in both events return to
the Corn Palace at 7:30 pm. Saturday for
the championships. Tickets range
from $25 to $35.
