out and lower meal tickets. This has
sent the industry back to the drawing board to find innovative ‘comebacks’ that will make new customers and keep others coming
back for more. Never before has
there been an emphasis on value as
it is seen now among large and
small fast food providers. The pendulum now swings in the direction
of those that are able to provide
value for money.
These times are reminiscent of the
late 1980s when we explored the
possibility of opening the first bakery at 1381 East Gunhill Road
Bronx NY. Acquiring a start- up loan
was unheard of and getting the well
needed equipment was an uphill
battle. There was no one to turn to
but ourselves, so we embraced
family and the contribution each
was able to make at that time. Had
it been easy to acquire a loan and
afford all the startup requirements,
we may never have been so
enriched by the knowledge, skills
and bond that is now twenty years
old. Our unspoken theme for the
past twenty years is one that was
recently made popular by President Barak Obama ”yes we can”.
A good leader does not sit back
and hope for the best, he rallies his
team, gets the creative juices flowing and finds ways to turn his problems into opportunities. This was
the goal behind our own first economic summit which was held in
November 2008. At that meeting ,
our franchisees and corporate executives were able to plainly analyze
the impact of the crisis on the
industry, and propose workable
long and short-term initiatives for
our Franchise system. Although we
lost a few stores to closure, we
were still able to open the 15 that
were under construction and
achieved an overall growth of 10%.
Our expansion strategy which took
us out of New York city and into
Massachusetts and Florida has
worked well for us. We widened
our scope and implemented new
approaches to Franchise sales,
offering opportunities to those with
limited capital to develop kiosks
and convert ‘mom and pops’
restaurants to the Golden Krust
concept.
(‘KIOSK’ FROM PAGE 1)
For over ten years we enjoyed
exponential growth in New York
with our current standing of over
83 stores. Now we are viewing the
growth in Florida very keenly as we
believe it will rival NY in years to
come. Already there are 17 well
established Golden Krust restaurants with room for another fifty.
Our intention is to capitalize on this
growth and to increase our brand
identity in that state.
Our Retail division is creating the
well-timed balance our organization
needs at this time. The division
continues to experience steady
growth under the leadership of
Leroy Hawthorne, Vice President.
Beautifully packaged frozen beef,
chicken and vegetable patties can
be found in some of the nation’s
largest supermarket chains. We are
also expanding our reach and can
be found in the frozen food aisles of
Jewel Osco and Food for Less in the
Mid-west. We have gained popularity on some University campuses
and continue to participate in the
NY schools lunch program. Our
tactical approach is to embrace the
opportunities that are advantageous to us.
The economic decline has not stifled our philanthropic spirit. We
continue to hold true to our pledge
to give back to our community and
to invest in the education of our
youth. The Mavis & Ephraim
Hawthorne Golden Krust Foundation has remained active, disbursing
25 scholarships over the past year
and participating in the crusade to
eradicate cancer among Caribbean
Americans.
In this the 20th year of business
we are poised to advance, we
firmly believe that times will
change; though it may take a few
years to stabilize. We will not sit
idly by , but will creatively pursue
opportunities presented as we
continue to support our franchisees,
serve our customers well and do all
that is in our power to create job
opportunities
In conclusion I wish to thank our
shareholders, franchisees, customers
and our dedicated staff, without
whom we could not have made it
this far.
Indians and those who love our
cuisine reside, travel or shop.
Golden Krust will continue to
carve out its niche in the mainstream quick service market by
providing easy access to our
unique menu options.
The Westfield Connecticut Post
Mall encompasses over 180
retailers including a 14-screen
movie theatre and a bustling
food court of which Golden Krust
is apart. Food lovers are naturally lured to the new GK kiosk
which enjoys the distinction of
being the only restaurant in the
mall offering Caribbean fare. On
a daily basis this kiosk serves a
diverse customer base of patrons
of all races who are eager to
sample the tasty Jamaican style
patties and meals.
Golden Krust’s first kiosk is
owned and operated by Luann
Parker who brought to the GK
franchise system a wealth of
experience in the fast food
industry. She has utilized those
skills in her own restaurant to
successfully establish the GK
brand in the city of Milford and
its environs. On a day to day
basis the kiosk is managed by
the very capable Nikki Brotherson, Luann’s younger sister and
business partner who does a fantastic job in providing superb
customer service to every Golden Krust customer.
As the company grows, it anticipates that this is just the first of
many kiosks to be opened within the GK franchise chain. Persons interested in owning a GK
kiosk should contact one of our
franchising executives at 718OK-KRUST at extension 7114 or
7135 or visit our website at

GK CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY
Caribbean owned business in the
U.S. to be granted a franchise
licence. That was a pivotal year
in the life of the company as it
also signified the relocation of
the production plant from
Gun Hill Rd to Park Avenue in the
South Bronx. This move was
necessary as the business began to
mushroom so rapidly that the small
GunHill Road store could no longer
meet the demand.
What started as a dream
blossomed into a solid
reality and has now come
of age.
Golden Krust Caribbean
Bakery & Grill opened its
first store on Gun Hill Rd in
1989 to carry on the rich tradition of baked products
inherited from Hawthorne &
Sons Bakery in Border District,
Jamaica. The company which
was started by the Hawthorne
siblings and their spouses
enjoyed phenomenal success
and soon grew to seventeen stores located in the New
York area.
Many aspiring entrepreneurs came knocking eager for
the opportunity to own a piece of this promising
empire. The Hawthorne’s were then encouraged to
create franchises and in 1996 became the first
GK’S SUMMER BBQ 2008
Today the Golden Krust chain
boasts over 120 stores located in nine
states with further expansion on the horizon.
This August the company will pause to celebrate its
whirlwind success with system-wide celebrations. We
will commemorate our coming of age in fine style to
say thanks to all our valued customers for their undying support over the past twenty years.
THANK YOU!
The Golden Krust family

thanks to Account representatives Colin Barrett of

GK AWARDS OVER $30,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS
GK NEWS ROUNDUP
GK Florida Office Opens in Lauderhill

Ceremony held at Bronx Community College
on August 8, 2008.
olden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill is now poised
to take over the state of
Florida. The company’s goal is to
achieve a total of fifty (50) stores
within the state over the next
four years.
Florida is home to the second
largest concentration of West
Indian immigrants in the United
States second to New York. It is
only natural that the company
should mirror it’s success in New
York within the Sunshine state.
To underscore its commitment to
expand the Florida market, Golden
Krust opened its regional office at
4120 N.W. 12th Street in the city
of Lauderhill, managed by Cassandra Hawthorne-Lee, Regional
Manager.
G
GK’s President officially declared
the office open for business on
October 12, 2008. In his remarks
Mr. Hawthorne noted that it has
become obvious that there is a
need for more administrative
support in Florida to handle the
demand for optimum service to
the existing franchises. “We mean
business in Florida and are making the necessary investment to
ensure that we meet and exceed
our goal of fifty stores within four
years” he said. In 2008 the company opened five new locations.
There is growing interest in the
brand which was demonstrated at
a franchise seminar staged in the
region to solicit new franchise
operators. Over one hundred and
twenty (120) persons were in
attendance anxious to learn how to
invest in this enterprising venture.
The Golden Krust experience
has captured the heart of Floridians who appreciate the authentic
Caribbean flare that the restaurants offer. Customers often
request that the chain open more
restaurants especially in northern
cities in the state. Golden Krust is
heeding the call and is positioning itself to be the Caribbean
brand of choice in the entire state
of Florida. We currently have
restaurants located in Clermont,
Coral Springs, Daytona Beach,
Kissimmee, Lauderhill, Miami,
North Lauderdale, Orlando, Pembroke Pines, Port Charlotte, St.
Petersburg and Tampa.
The Mavis & Ephraim Hawthorne
Golden Krust Foundation – the philanthropic arm of Golden Krust
Caribbean Bakery & Grill since its
inception in 2005, has awarded
over seventy scholarships in the
United States and Jamaica. It is the
mandate of the foundation to
develop a constituency to support
the well-being of the community
through educational initiatives.
In 2008, the Foundation awarded
twenty-five scholarships totaling
over $30,000 to deserving college
bound students. President & CEO
Lowell Hawthorne made the
announcement at a ceremony held
at Bronx Community College.
Mr. Hawthorne said “it has always
been the company’s philosophy to
put people before profit. This has
been demonstrated by the intentional ways in which Golden Krust
reaches out to the communities in
which it operates.”
2008 was an active year for the
Foundation, awarding scholarships
in the amount of $2,000 each to
high school seniors from Bronx,
Brooklyn and White Plains in New
York and from Cape Coral and Minneola in Florida. These recipients
were selected from a group of thirty applicants based on grades
received on essays they submitted
and also their level of involvement
in community projects.
In May, eight students at Bronx
Community College were also
awarded grants in the amount of
$1000 each as part of an agreement
with that institution which was
established by President and CEO
Lowell Hawthorne back in 2004.
The grant was set up to assist students that maintained a GPA score
above 3.5 who had great financial
need. Hot on the heels of that
award presentation, in June 2008,
the Foundation also awarded scholarships to six outstanding achievers
at the Oberlin High School in
Jamaica.

Garnet ‘Byron’ Morrison
Burnett ‘Garvey’ Morrison
At the crack of dawn when most are still asleep,
you will find Garnett & Burnett Morrison spinning the wheels of industry at the Golden Krust
plant producing the best Jamaican-style baked
products one can find in the United States. Garnett and Burnett Morrison are brothers who have
been with the company since its inception. Baking is a natural talent that runs in their family. It is
therefore no surprise that these brothers earned
the responsibility to oversee the GK Patty Plant
and Bakery. Garnett is the Director of Plant Operations who oversees the production of all the
eight varieties of Golden Krust patties, while
Burnett is the Master Baker churning out all the
breads, buns, gizzardas and other baked delights
synonymous with Golden Krust. Never missing
a beat or a day of work, these brothers are the
reason why our loyal customers will always keep
coming back for more. To the Morrison brothers
Golden Krust owes a world of gratitude.
Lowell Hawthorne, President and CEO along with Dawn Bennett, Breast Cancer Survivor, at the Breast Cancer promotion launch at the Jamaican
Consulate in New York
January 2009 was designated as
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
throughout the entire Golden Krust
chain. The campaign titled "Eat for
the Cause" got underway to raise
funds to assist in the fight against
the disease. The campaign was
officially launched at the Jamaican
Consulate in Manhattan on January
8th. In his address to the large
gathering of supporters who
attended the event, GK President
& CEO Lowell Hawthorne said, “I
am particularly honored to be the
first Caribbean restaurant chain to
bring heightened awareness to the
Caribbean American community in
this fashion about a disease which
affects almost every household in
America. Golden Krust is strategically poised to assist in spreading
the word to this minority group
because they are our primary customer base. We believe that as a
responsible corporate citizen we
must play an active role in preserving the health and well-being of our
most precious asset – the customer."
For every Golden Krust chicken
patty sold within the franchise
chain in the month of January a
portion of the sale was donated to
the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Every dollar donated
will be used by the NBCF to fund
free mammograms for women
who could not otherwise afford the
exam and also support research
programs to find a cure, in leading
facilities across the country.
Golden Krust’s objective through
this initiative was to help save lives
by increasing awareness about
breast cancer through education.
The company intends to make this
an annual campaign.

Garnet ‘Byron’ Morrison
Burnett ‘Garvey’ Morrison
At the crack of dawn when most are still asleep,
you will find Garnett & Burnett Morrison spinning the wheels of industry at the Golden Krust
plant producing the best Jamaican-style baked
products one can find in the United States. Garnett and Burnett Morrison are brothers who have
been with the company since its inception. Baking is a natural talent that runs in their family. It is
therefore no surprise that these brothers earned
the responsibility to oversee the GK Patty Plant
and Bakery. Garnett is the Director of Plant Operations who oversees the production of all the
eight varieties of Golden Krust patties, while
Burnett is the Master Baker churning out all the
breads, buns, gizzardas and other baked delights
synonymous with Golden Krust. Never missing
a beat or a day of work, these brothers are the
reason why our loyal customers will always keep
coming back for more. To the Morrison brothers
Golden Krust owes a world of gratitude.
Lowell Hawthorne, President and CEO along with Dawn Bennett, Breast Cancer Survivor, at the Breast Cancer promotion launch at the Jamaican
Consulate in New York
January 2009 was designated as
Breast Cancer Awareness Month
throughout the entire Golden Krust
chain. The campaign titled "Eat for
the Cause" got underway to raise
funds to assist in the fight against
the disease. The campaign was
officially launched at the Jamaican
Consulate in Manhattan on January
8th. In his address to the large
gathering of supporters who
attended the event, GK President
& CEO Lowell Hawthorne said, “I
am particularly honored to be the
first Caribbean restaurant chain to
bring heightened awareness to the
Caribbean American community in
this fashion about a disease which
affects almost every household in
America. Golden Krust is strategically poised to assist in spreading
the word to this minority group
because they are our primary customer base. We believe that as a
responsible corporate citizen we
must play an active role in preserving the health and well-being of our
most precious asset – the customer."
For every Golden Krust chicken
patty sold within the franchise
chain in the month of January a
portion of the sale was donated to
the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF). Every dollar donated
will be used by the NBCF to fund
free mammograms for women
who could not otherwise afford the
exam and also support research
programs to find a cure, in leading
facilities across the country.
Golden Krust’s objective through
this initiative was to help save lives
by increasing awareness about
breast cancer through education.
The company intends to make this
an annual campaign.

GK AWARDS OVER $30,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS
GK NEWS ROUNDUP
GK Florida Office Opens in Lauderhill
2008 Scholarship Winners and their parents
flanked by GK Executives at the Awards
Ceremony held at Bronx Community College
on August 8, 2008.
olden Krust Caribbean Bakery & Grill is now poised
to take over the state of
Florida. The company’s goal is to
achieve a total of fifty (50) stores
within the state over the next
four years.
Florida is home to the second
largest concentration of West
Indian immigrants in the United
States second to New York. It is
only natural that the company
should mirror it’s success in New
York within the Sunshine state.
To underscore its commitment to
expand the Florida market, Golden
Krust opened its regional office at
4120 N.W. 12th Street in the city
of Lauderhill, managed by Cassandra Hawthorne-Lee, Regional
Manager.
G
GK’s President officially declared
the office open for business on
October 12, 2008. In his remarks
Mr. Hawthorne noted that it has
become obvious that there is a
need for more administrative
support in Florida to handle the
demand for optimum service to
the existing franchises. “We mean
business in Florida and are making the necessary investment to
ensure that we meet and exceed
our goal of fifty stores within four
years” he said. In 2008 the company opened five new locations.
There is growing interest in the
brand which was demonstrated at
a franchise seminar staged in the
region to solicit new franchise
operators. Over one hundred and
twenty (120) persons were in
attendance anxious to learn how to
invest in this enterprising venture.
The Golden Krust experience
has captured the heart of Floridians who appreciate the authentic
Caribbean flare that the restaurants offer. Customers often
request that the chain open more
restaurants especially in northern
cities in the state. Golden Krust is
heeding the call and is positioning itself to be the Caribbean
brand of choice in the entire state
of Florida. We currently have
restaurants located in Clermont,
Coral Springs, Daytona Beach,
Kissimmee, Lauderhill, Miami,
North Lauderdale, Orlando, Pembroke Pines, Port Charlotte, St.
Petersburg and Tampa.
The Mavis & Ephraim Hawthorne
Golden Krust Foundation – the philanthropic arm of Golden Krust
Caribbean Bakery & Grill since its
inception in 2005, has awarded
over seventy scholarships in the
United States and Jamaica. It is the
mandate of the foundation to
develop a constituency to support
the well-being of the community
through educational initiatives.
In 2008, the Foundation awarded
twenty-five scholarships totaling
over $30,000 to deserving college
bound students. President & CEO
Lowell Hawthorne made the
announcement at a ceremony held
at Bronx Community College.
Mr. Hawthorne said “it has always
been the company’s philosophy to
put people before profit. This has
been demonstrated by the intentional ways in which Golden Krust
reaches out to the communities in
which it operates.”
2008 was an active year for the
Foundation, awarding scholarships
in the amount of $2,000 each to
high school seniors from Bronx,
Brooklyn and White Plains in New
York and from Cape Coral and Minneola in Florida. These recipients
were selected from a group of thirty applicants based on grades
received on essays they submitted
and also their level of involvement
in community projects.
In May, eight students at Bronx
Community College were also
awarded grants in the amount of
$1000 each as part of an agreement
with that institution which was
established by President and CEO
Lowell Hawthorne back in 2004.
The grant was set up to assist students that maintained a GPA score
above 3.5 who had great financial
need. Hot on the heels of that
award presentation, in June 2008,
the Foundation also awarded scholarships to six outstanding achievers
at the Oberlin High School in
Jamaica.

GK CELEBRATES 20TH ANNIVERSARY
Caribbean owned business in the
U.S. to be granted a franchise
licence. That was a pivotal year
in the life of the company as it
also signified the relocation of
the production plant from
Gun Hill Rd to Park Avenue in the
South Bronx. This move was
necessary as the business began to
mushroom so rapidly that the small
GunHill Road store could no longer
meet the demand.
What started as a dream
blossomed into a solid
reality and has now come
of age.
Golden Krust Caribbean
Bakery & Grill opened its
first store on Gun Hill Rd in
1989 to carry on the rich tradition of baked products
inherited from Hawthorne &
Sons Bakery in Border District,
Jamaica. The company which
was started by the Hawthorne
siblings and their spouses
enjoyed phenomenal success
and soon grew to seventeen stores located in the New
York area.
Many aspiring entrepreneurs came knocking eager for
the opportunity to own a piece of this promising
empire. The Hawthorne’s were then encouraged to
create franchises and in 1996 became the first
GK’S SUMMER BBQ 2008
Today the Golden Krust chain
boasts over 120 stores located in nine
states with further expansion on the horizon.
This August the company will pause to celebrate its
whirlwind success with system-wide celebrations. We
will commemorate our coming of age in fine style to
say thanks to all our valued customers for their undying support over the past twenty years.
THANK YOU!
The Golden Krust family
would like to say thanks to
two of our leading vendors,

thanks to Account representatives Colin Barrett of
Iberia Foods and David Lerman of Paper Plus who can

(‘VISION ALIVE’ FROM PAGE 1)
out and lower meal tickets. This has
sent the industry back to the drawing board to find innovative ‘comebacks’ that will make new customers and keep others coming
back for more. Never before has
there been an emphasis on value as
it is seen now among large and
small fast food providers. The pendulum now swings in the direction
of those that are able to provide
value for money.
These times are reminiscent of the
late 1980s when we explored the
possibility of opening the first bakery at 1381 East Gunhill Road
Bronx NY. Acquiring a start- up loan
was unheard of and getting the well
needed equipment was an uphill
battle. There was no one to turn to
but ourselves, so we embraced
family and the contribution each
was able to make at that time. Had
it been easy to acquire a loan and
afford all the startup requirements,
we may never have been so
enriched by the knowledge, skills
and bond that is now twenty years
old. Our unspoken theme for the
past twenty years is one that was
recently made popular by President Barak Obama ”yes we can”.
A good leader does not sit back
and hope for the best, he rallies his
team, gets the creative juices flowing and finds ways to turn his problems into opportunities. This was
the goal behind our own first economic summit which was held in
November 2008. At that meeting ,
our franchisees and corporate executives were able to plainly analyze
the impact of the crisis on the
industry, and propose workable
long and short-term initiatives for
our Franchise system. Although we
lost a few stores to closure, we
were still able to open the 15 that
were under construction and
achieved an overall growth of 10%.
Our expansion strategy which took
us out of New York city and into
Massachusetts and Florida has
worked well for us. We widened
our scope and implemented new
approaches to Franchise sales,
offering opportunities to those with
limited capital to develop kiosks
and convert ‘mom and pops’
restaurants to the Golden Krust
concept.
(‘KIOSK’ FROM PAGE 1)
For over ten years we enjoyed
exponential growth in New York
with our current standing of over
83 stores. Now we are viewing the
growth in Florida very keenly as we
believe it will rival NY in years to
come. Already there are 17 well
established Golden Krust restaurants with room for another fifty.
Our intention is to capitalize on this
growth and to increase our brand
identity in that state.
Our Retail division is creating the
well-timed balance our organization
needs at this time. The division
continues to experience steady
growth under the leadership of
Leroy Hawthorne, Vice President.
Beautifully packaged frozen beef,
chicken and vegetable patties can
be found in some of the nation’s
largest supermarket chains. We are
also expanding our reach and can
be found in the frozen food aisles of
Jewel Osco and Food for Less in the
Mid-west. We have gained popularity on some University campuses
and continue to participate in the
NY schools lunch program. Our
tactical approach is to embrace the
opportunities that are advantageous to us.
The economic decline has not stifled our philanthropic spirit. We
continue to hold true to our pledge
to give back to our community and
to invest in the education of our
youth. The Mavis & Ephraim
Hawthorne Golden Krust Foundation has remained active, disbursing
25 scholarships over the past year
and participating in the crusade to
eradicate cancer among Caribbean
Americans.
In this the 20th year of business
we are poised to advance, we
firmly believe that times will
change; though it may take a few
years to stabilize. We will not sit
idly by , but will creatively pursue
opportunities presented as we
continue to support our franchisees,
serve our customers well and do all
that is in our power to create job
opportunities
In conclusion I wish to thank our
shareholders, franchisees, customers
and our dedicated staff, without
whom we could not have made it
this far.
Indians and those who love our
cuisine reside, travel or shop.
Golden Krust will continue to
carve out its niche in the mainstream quick service market by
providing easy access to our
unique menu options.
The Westfield Connecticut Post
Mall encompasses over 180
retailers including a 14-screen
movie theatre and a bustling
food court of which Golden Krust
is apart. Food lovers are naturally lured to the new GK kiosk
which enjoys the distinction of
being the only restaurant in the
mall offering Caribbean fare. On
a daily basis this kiosk serves a
diverse customer base of patrons
of all races who are eager to
sample the tasty Jamaican style
patties and meals.
Golden Krust’s first kiosk is
owned and operated by Luann
Parker who brought to the GK
franchise system a wealth of
experience in the fast food
industry. She has utilized those
skills in her own restaurant to
successfully establish the GK
brand in the city of Milford and
its environs. On a day to day
basis the kiosk is managed by
the very capable Nikki Brotherson, Luann’s younger sister and
business partner who does a fantastic job in providing superb
customer service to every Golden Krust customer.
As the company grows, it anticipates that this is just the first of
many kiosks to be opened within the GK franchise chain. Persons interested in owning a GK
kiosk should contact one of our
franchising executives at 718OK-KRUST at extension 7114 or
