Create More … Design Iterations “We make. We make and use models to articulate ideas and study possibilities during the design process. We make models to better understand. This is something that we have always done, but with the advancement of 3D printing technologies we can now make faster.” Wesley Wright

Impress Stakeholders
“ZPrinting enables us to quickly create early massing models and produce presentation models with accurate detail we never could have obtained even after weeks of handcrafting. The steering committee, mayor and city planners were simply amazed by our most recent models.”

MicroStation Challenges for AEC in 3DP
• Shells
Most buildings are made up of hundreds of thousands of parts
• Scale
Most AEC models are “scale” models, 1/100 to 1/1000 of real world scale
• Solids
Lines and planes have meaning in AEC CAD. They do not have meaning to a 3D printer • Subjective Interpretation
Decisions need to be made about what and how to show objects
Surface Normals
ƒ STL and VRML files use triangles to approximate model surfaces ‐ each triangle has three points and a direction
ƒ The direction tells the printer where to add material
ƒ All normals should face the outside of the part
ƒ Inverted normals are often shown in dark colors
ZPrinter Scale Guidelines
ƒ Problem: Things that start small get much smaller
ƒ Solution: Remove or thicken
ƒ Examples: Hand rails, windows, fences, interior fixtures
Tools Available
A tool for calculating real world minimum thicknesses is online at www.cadspan.com/tools
Subjective Interpretation
ƒ Problem: Flat panel too thin to print
ƒ Solution: Extrude to at least 3 mm to make them printable
Other cases –
ƒ Cables
ƒ Sunshades
ƒ Fabric structures
Exterior, Interior and Details
• More difficult to make a one size fits all model than two or more smaller ones • Make a larger scale model if you are trying to communicate something specific
• Consider what you would show in a 2D rendering or detail

“There’s something about walking around a site, even a scale model, that reveals the truth of the proposal.” Clients are fascinated with the model and impressed with us for presenting it. The mood of the meeting brightens.” Robin Lockhart, OBMI
Henning Larsen
“Thanks to 3D printing, our models are more refined and more precise, which gives us an advantage. There’s no doubt that beautiful models help us win commissions.”
‐Morton Steffensen, Henning Larsen
Andrew Chary Architect
“BIM doesn’t reach its full persuasive potential on a computer screen. The model comes to life when you hold a 3D print in your hands.”
Andrew R Chary, Andrew Chary Architect PLLC
Fonco Fabrication and Design – The Company
• Creative design and fabrication agency specializing in custom objects and images for film, videos, displays and presentations.
• Develop sculptural and hard‐
edged models, robotic props, prototypes, artwork, molds and castings for a wide range of clients
Fonco Fabrication and Design – Challenges
• Increasingly complex design and fabrication projects and tighter deadlines required moving to a new level of rapid fabrication technology.
• Produce multiple pieces for assembled structures
• Perform advance post processing such as painting and finishing
• Meet seemingly impossible time deadlines
Fonco Fabrication and Design – The Results
• Fonco was able to print multiple pieces of the assembly in record time and complete challenging projects without sacrificing quality
