WELCOME TO THE
25TH JENNINGS
KESWICK
JAZZ FESTIVAL
SPECIAL THANKS TO:
John Minnion
2016 Festival President
Cllr. Ron Munby MBE
A quarter of a century ago, John Minnion put
together the first jazz festival to be staged in
Keswick. Twenty five years later we are preparing to
enjoy our silver anniversary and to celebrate the
great success of the festival, the fabulous variety of
world-class performers to be discovered and
foremost, our love of Jazz music, which has
enriched us over the years. As you pore over the
programme, there will be many faces regulars will
recognise, as well as some exciting new talent,
performing traditional, swing and New Orleans jazz
mixed with a bit of blues, gospel, big band and hot
club to spice things up.

A BREEZE FROM NEW ORLEANS
This band was founded in 2012 by Sarah
Thatcher to celebrate the music of the great
George Lewis and his bands. Ensemble playing
and solos are evenly balanced, and
spontaneity and a mixture of light and shade
keeps the band sounding fresh and exciting.
The front line of Steve Graham (trumpet),
Tom Whittingham (trombone) and Liz Bacon
(clarinet) is backed by Sarah Thatcher
(banjo), Annie Hawkins (bass), Ian Wynne
(piano) and Paul Bacon (drums). They will
also be joined by Emily Bacon as a guest
vocalist. Playing: Fri
AL NICHOLS
A warm toned and exciting tenor sax player in
the free blowing, booting style of the ‘Texas
Tenors’ of the 1940s and 50s - the likes of
Illinois Jacquet, Arnett Cobb and Buddy Tate.
Al has been part of the line-up for several top
swing / jive bands including King Pleasure and
Ray Gelato’s bands. He leads his own band,
Blue Harlem, and plays regularly with TJ
ALAN BARNES
Since moving to London in 1980 to play with
the Midnight Follies Orchestra, Alan has
received over 30 British Jazz Awards, for alto
sax, baritone sax, clarinet and arranging, and
he has twice been voted BBC Jazz
Instrumentalist of the Year. He has been a key
side-man with Stan Tracey, Mike Westbrook
and Humphrey Lyttelton to name a few, and
runs his own groups with David Newton and
Bruce Adams. He is also a respected composer
and arranger and runs Woodville Records, a UK
jazz label.
This year he will lead Remembering the Rabbit,
paying tribute to Johnny Hodges, one of the
greatest alto sax players of his time; a long
standing member of the Duke Ellington band
with such a characteristic sound. This concert
will feature Alan with Matthias Seuffert (tenor
sax), Enrico Tomasso (trumpet), Ian Bateman
(trombone), Craig Milverton (piano), Sandy
Suchodolski (bass) and Nick Millward
(drums). Alan will also appear with Keswick
Festival Saxophones, the Keswick Festival
Orchestra, and in a quintet with John Hallam

AMY ROBERTS
Twice winner of the ‘Rising Star’ category in the
British Jazz Awards, and the first woman to join
the Big Chris Barber Band, Amy’s saxophone,
clarinet and flute playing have been wowing
audiences all over Europe. Amy will be
performing with The Hallam / Roberts Quintet,
where she joins forces with John Hallam and
the Craig Milverton Trio. She will also be playing
with the Keswick Festival Orchestra and the
Grand Festival Parade Band, and she brings
two exciting bands to Keswick that she runs
with Richard Exall, The Magnificent Seven Jazz
Band and The Richard Exall /Amy Roberts
Quintet. Playing: Fri, Sat
BABY JOOLS AND
THE JAZZAHOLICS
Inspired by his namesake Baby Dodds, ‘Baby
Jools’ (Julyan Aldridge) went on the road with
Max Collie’s band when he was still a teenager,
and has steadily been building his reputation as
a powerful New Orleans style drummer. He
took over the running of The Jazzaholics from
Jim McIntosh three years ago. It is a band that
crosses generations, combining experience
mixed with youthful energy. They delight
audiences far and wide with jazz full of
excitement and humour, always played from
the heart. The Jazzaholics features Baby Jools
(drums) Denny Ilett (trumpet), John
Maddocks (reeds), Mike Owen (trombone),
Jim Swinnerton (bass), Brian Mellor (banjo).
Jools will also appear with the Dorine de Wit
Band. Playing: Thu – Sun
ANNIE HAWKINS
One of Europe’s most popular New Orleans
style bass players, Annie came to Britain from
Australia in the early 1960s, since when she has
played, toured and recorded with many top
names including Ken Colyer, Sammy
Rimington and Humphrey Lyttleton. Her
playing ranges from bowed solos to her
characteristic lyrical slap style. Annie will
perform with A Breeze from New Orleans as
well as her own, recently formed band, The
Funky Butt Hall N’awlins Jazz Band.
Playing: Thu, Fri

KESWICK JAZZ FESTIVAL 2016
BRUCE ROLLO
Among Britain’s finest traditional jazz and
swing bassists, Bruce Rollo continues to be one
of Keswick Jazz Festival’s magic ingredients.
He is a master of the supremely rhythmic ‘slap’
style of bass playing, to which he brings an
exceptional ear for both pitch and melody. His
style and technique makes him highly sought
after by many top jazz names. He is appearing
here at Keswick again this year along with his
160 year-old friend, Mabel, the double bass. He
will be performing with Jeff Barnhart’s Wild
Nights in Harlem, TJ Johnson’s bands, the
Tony Pitt All Stars, Brownfield Byrne Hot Six
(on Sunday) and with Keith Stephen’s band.
Playing: Thu – Sun
drummer Nick Millward. This year they will be
playing with the Hallam / Roberts Quintet,
the Exall / Roberts Quintet, Keswick Festival
Saxophones, The Magnificent Seven, and
Remembering the Rabbit as well as
performing as a trio in a tribute to Oscar
Peterson. Playing: Fri – Sun
COLIN GOOD
One of the UK’s top stride piano players, Colin
has a hot and exciting style reminiscent of the
great Earl Hines. Accomplished in both jazz
and classical music, he is in constant demand
as a pianist, organist, arranger and musical
director. In his early career he toured with The
Inkspots, and went on to direct Vile Bodies Big
Band residency at The Ritz for many years. He
has recorded music for radio, TV and film and
has also been Bryan Ferry’s arranger and
musical director for many years, appearing on
Bryan’s albums and accompanying him on
worldwide tours. At Keswick he will be playing
with Pete Horsfall’s Basin Street Brawlers,
Enrico Tomasso’s Riverboat Shufflers, the
Nevada Street Jazz Band and Richard
White’s Fivers. Playing: Thu – Sat
DOMINIC PIPKIN
Dom is regarded as one of the UK’s top rhythm
and blues pianist interpreters of New Orleans
jazz; a spicy genre that encompasses jazz,
blues and Caribbean flavours. Appearing on
national radio as an authority on the style and
recently performing at the New Orleans Jazz
and Heritage Festival on Piano Night, we are
delighted to have him here at Keswick.
Influences of his include Fats Waller, James
Booker, Professor Longhair and others.
He will be performing with John Hallam (sax),
Frank Grime (bass) and Gaz Hughes (drums)
on Thursday at midday. He is also a highly
entertaining solo performer, with a large
repertoire of songs and interesting repartee,
and you can catch him playing solo in The
Golden Lion 5-7pm on Wednesday and
Thursday. Playing: Wed, Thu
CRAIG MILVERTON TRIO
Inspired by the piano playing of Oscar Peterson
and Bill Evans, Craig started playing with rock
and roll bands in Devon in his early 20s. Many
years of touring with Pete Allen, Terry Lightfoot
and most recently Digby Fairweather
introduced his supreme piano talents to the
festival going public around the world.
Matching his talents in Craig’s trio are top

DORINE DE WIT BAND
A new band for Keswick and a new band for Dorine
de Wit. Growing up in Enkhuizen, a hot bed of
traditional jazz in Holland, with a father who
played banjo in the Freetime Old Dixie Jass Band,
Dorine was no stranger to the traditional jazz scene.
After moving to Cornwall in 2007 she was a
founder member of the popular RnB, jazz and ska
band ‘Roadkill’, and she also toured with the
Richard Bennett Band. Soon her relaxed but driving
banjo playing and natural, warm singing style were
gaining attention wherever she played. For this
band she has invited award-winning reeds player
and singer Jonny Boston over from Holland for a
rare return to the UK.Joining them will be Jamie
Brownfield (trumpet), Jim Swinnerton (bass),
Baby Jools (drums), and on Thursday Graham
Hughes (trombone), and Friday Paul Munnery
(trombone). Playing: Thu, Fri
ENRICO TOMASSO
Winner of best trumpet category of the British
Jazz Awards two years running, Enrico is a
popular figure at many of the European
festivals and clubs. He has an exciting
presence and lively personality on stage, with

invention a wonder to behold. A childhood
meeting with Louis Armstrong was one of the
biggest influences on his musical style and

harmonica and singing, as well as leading his
own band. This year he will be part of Keswick
Festival Trombones and joining The Three
Bears as a guest along with Nicki Allan and
Frank Brooker. Playing: Sat, Sun
EWAN BLEACH
A star of the younger generation of musicians
discovering 20s and 30s jazz in London, Ewan
plays reeds and piano. His answer, a few years
ago, to the lack of other young musicians
playing the music he loved, was to set up two
jazz clubs and invite people to play at them.
They are still going strong, and Ewan is in
demand as a musician with many bands. He
regularly visits New Orleans for inspiration and
has toured France with the renowned New
Orleans street band Tuba Skinny.
At Keswick he will be performing with Jeff
Barnhart’s Wild Nights in Harlem, the Basin
Street Brawlers, The Biggest Little Band in
the Land, Richard White’s Fivers, Keswick
Festival Orchestra and Jeff Barnhart’s

album won the British Jazz Album of the Year

of Lake Records.
After a packed out session at their Keswick
debut last year, this band returns to bring you
the authentic sounds of 1920s and 30s
America – Jazz, Blues, Gospel, Ragtime – but
with their own twist, featuring songs of murder,
betrayal, gambling, liquor and redemption.
They have released an album a year for the
23
last three years, each meeting with rave
reviews, such as, "a masterpiece of nostalgic
music. The band display real virtuosity and
create a wonderful sound that would be hard
for any other band to repeat" and “every now
and then a CD comes along that puts a smile
on your face, and this is one of them”. The lineup features Duncan Wilcox (vocals & double

JAMIE BROWNFIELD
Growing up in mid-Wales, Jamie started
playing cornet aged nine in the local brass
band. He soon discovered jazz and was
hooked. Guesting wherever he could to learn
the ropes, Jamie formed his first band when he
was 13. He has rapidly absorbed all the styles
that any self-respecting jazz trumpeter should
– from early New Orleans, through big band,
bebop and onwards - and his powerful and
self-assured style earned him 1st place in the
‘Rising Star’ category of the 2012 British Jazz
Awards. He is now well known at many of the
major jazz festivals. Jamie will be appearing
with The Dorine de Wit Band, The Grand
Festival Parade Band, The Keswick Festival

combined talents of Janet’s brother David

sure to give the festival two very special
concerts. Playing: Fri, Sat

years” on hearing her debut album. Her latest
album, Madeleine Rooms, has been featured as

JOHN BURGESS
Having studied at Berklee College of Music in
the USA with notable musicians there, John
toured and recorded in the USA and Canada.
Now living in the UK near Edinburgh he
regularly performs with many of the top
traditional and mainstream jazz musicians. He
fronts two bands with regular collaborator Roy
Williams this year. First up is Alex Welsh
Remembered which pays tribute to the great
Scottish band leader, in a line-up that includes
two members of the Alex Welsh band itself,
Roy Williams (trombone) and Tony Pitt
(guitar). They will be joined by Enrico Tomasso
(trumpet), Tom Kincaid (piano), Jim
Swinnerton (bass) and Jack Cotterill (drums).
Next John Burgess joins Roy Williams and the
Tom Kincaid Trio, a relaxed, fun, swinging
session from five great musicians. Playing: Thu
JOHN FELLOWS
Starting on clarinet, John moved on to bass in
his early twenties then later also to
sousaphone. The melodic driving style of
Jimmie Blanton’s bass playing is a great
inspiration for him. He toured extensively in
the 70s with Duncan Swift, Roy Williams and
Digby Fairweather, and played at John
Richards’ club backing touring British and
American soloists such as Joe Harriet, George
Chisholm, Humphrey Lyttleton and Alex Welsh.
This year at Keswick he will be playing with
Richard Leach’s Keswick Clubhouse Five,
Richard Leach’s Festival Stars of Jazz and
with the Maddocks-Huxley Reeds United.

JOHN HALLAM
John is an outstanding and accomplished
musician with a well-deserved musical
reputation. He never fails to impress, whether
playing clarinet, bass clarinet, flute or
saxophone (from baritone to soprano), and is
equally at ease with many styles of music,
bringing his warm sound and humour to any
setting. The list of people he has shared stages
with from Europe and the USA reads like a
who’s who of jazz. At Keswick he will be reunited with Dom Pipkin for a gig after their
debut together last year, join Amy Roberts in
the Hallam-Roberts Quintet, perform with
Richard Leach’s Festival Stars of Jazz, guest
with the fabulous Remi Harris Trio, play with
Jeff and Anne Barhart’s International Swing
Four, and join Alan Barnes for what will be an
exciting line-up with the Nicola Farnon Trio.

JOHN MADDOCKS
John has been playing clarinet and leading
bands for over 50 years. First and foremost a
clarinet player, he also plays tenor, alto and
soprano saxophones. John has his own
immediately recognisable dynamic style of
playing, inspired in particular by Johnny Dodds.
He has been leading his band, The John
Maddocks Jazzmen, for over 40 years. At this
year’s festival he will open the proceedings in
the Methodist Church on Thursday with Nick
Ward’s Jelly Roll Trio, play with Baby Jools
27
and the Jazzaholics and close proceedings in
the Marquee on Sunday night with the ever
popular Maddocks / Huxley Reeds United.
Over the years this band has become an
institution at Keswick Jazz Festival – a band
that unites friends on the stage for a show
that is always a hit. There is always a magic
chemistry when the joint leaders George
Huxley and John Maddocks (reeds) meet on
a stage, and with Jon Penn (piano), Geoff
Over (banjo), John Fellows (bass) and
Graham Smith (drums), it’s always a winning
combination. Playing: Thu – Sun
JON PENN
A familiar face, particularly at the festival jam
sessions, Jon just loves to play and he conveys
that pleasure to those who listen to him. He
draws his inspiration from the classic pianists
such as Jelly Roll Morton and Clarence Williams.
He started playing jazz with Ken Ingrams
Society Syncopators in 1968 before moving to
Wrexham and beginning a 20 year association
with the Severnside Jazz Band. Jon now plays
regularly with George Huxley’s Jazzmen and
Reeds United as well as many others. This year
he will join John Maddocks in Nick Ward’s
Jelly Roll Trio, and join Geoff Over and George
Huxley with Bechet and Beyond and play
with the Maddocks-Huxley Reeds United
Band. Playing: Thu – Sun
KEITH NICHOLS
Keith Nichols is considered to be one of the
foremost authorities on classic jazz and
ragtime. First winning acclaim as the UK Junior
Champion on accordion when he was fifteen,
he then toured with the Levity Lancers playing
piano, trombone and tuba. In 1976 he
appeared in New York’s Carnegie Hall as a
member of Richard Sudhalter’s New Paul
Whiteman Orchestra. Keith has dozens of
recording credits for EMI, Decca and other
labels as bandleader, soloist and sideman. In
1990, he was invited by musical director Bob
Wilber to play the piano part of Hoagy
Carmichael on the soundtrack of the feature
film, Bix, recorded in Rome. In 2004 he won the
prestigious BBC Jazz Heritage Award. Keith
continues to perform and record prolifically, as
well as lecturing on jazz history at London
music academies. We are privileged to have
him return again to the festival, bringing his
virtuosic piano playing, interesting and
entertaining anecdotes, highly enjoyable
vocals, and brilliant skills as arranger and
band leader.
He will be performing with Paul Munnery’s
Harlem Club Crawl, with The Joan Viskant /
Mike Henry Band, and with Seuffert /Whiting
Quintet. He will also continue his popular
series of talks with Part 4: The Life and Times of
a Jazz Vagabond on Sunday 15 May at 10am.
Keith will present The Fabulous Moving
Picture Show with Jeff Barnhart on Sunday
morning, for a highly entertaining
accompaniment to classic silent movies, and
he has prepared two wonderful concerts for
The Keswick Festival Orchestra.

KEITH STEPHEN’S HOT CLUB TRIO
AND CAROLINE IRWIN
Starting out as a Django Reinhardt inspired
band in 2003, they have expanded their
repertoire into other realms of jazz and even
the odd 1950s pop song. They may also whip
out banjos and ukuleles on occasions to create
a performance that is thoroughly entertaining.
Caroline Irwin adds an extra dimension to the
trio, with her sweet, knowingly naïve style of
singing and her cheeky Geordie banter and
enthusiasm. They will be joined by Bob
Surgeoner (guitar) and Bruce Rollo (bass).
Keith Stephen, as a banjo and guitar player,
has been part of every Keswick Jazz Festival.
His reliable and solid playing have made him
first choice for many bands and musicians,
and this year he will also be playing with Jeff
Barnhart’s Leaders of the Pack Band.

KEN MATHEISON’S CLASSIC
JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Performance sponsored by Creative Scotland.
Ken Matheison has been active on the Scottish
jazz scene for over 50 years with a stylistic
range from ragtime to bebop and beyond. This
versatility has enabled him to play with an
astonishing ‘who’s who’ of jazz stars and is
reflected in the repertoire of his awardwinning Classic Jazz Orchestra: Jelly Roll
Morton to Charles Mingus, with plenty of Louis
Armstong, Bix Beiderbecke, Duke Ellington,
Sidney Bechet, Benny Carter and Gerry
Mulligan along the way. CJO’s arrangements,
all written by Ken, are equally eclectic with lots
of cross-referencing of historic recordings in
entirely new settings, although for this year’s
festival they will focus on their earlier
repertoire. With Billy Hunter (trumpet), Phil
O’Malley (trombone), Martin Kershaw,
Konrad Wiszniewski and Martin Foster

of performing and listening to jazz. The

LA’AL BIG BAND
The first visit to Keswick Jazz Festival for this
local 19-piece jazz/swing orchestra based in
the Western Lake District. Formed five years
ago by trumpeter Paul Marks, the band has
quickly gained an enviable reputation locally
and further afield. The word La’al (the local
dialect for ‘little’, pronounced ‘Laahl’)
precedes everything in the Western Lakes,
hence the band’s name - despite being a big
band! For this year’s festival they will perform
their latest show The Best of the Big Bands,
celebrating landmark arrangements,
performers and bandleaders from the 1920s
onwards. Graham Kilner, Jack Moore, Susan

KESWICK FESTIVAL SAXOPHONES
Every year audiences at Keswick have been lucky
enough to enjoy performances from a large
number of leading saxophone and clarinet
players. Many of them only cross paths with each
other once or twice in a year at jazz festivals
where they re-kindle musical and social
friendships. This concert is an opportunity for
four of them to indulge in their musical
associations, mutual respect and the joy of
playing together. Featuring Alan Barnes,
Matthias Seuffert, Richard Exall and Trevor
Whiting (reeds), with Craig Milverton (piano),
Nick Millward (drums) and Sandy Suchodolski

out sessions last year, Lizy Exell returns with her
fabulous band. She leads from behind the
drums and has chosen some of the finest new
musical talent appearing on the London scene
to join her. They combine the quintessential
sound of the 20s and 30s with originality and
character, performing a number of their own
compositions written in a style evoking the
mood of early jazz but with their own quirky
twist. Joining Lizy are Will Scott (reeds), Mike
Soper (trumpet), Andrew Oliver (piano),
Louis Thomas (bass). The members of the Old
Hat Jazz Band will also be scattered around
the festival and Lizy Exell will also appear with

his home town of Chester raising money for
charity. An accomplished and popular jazz
pianist with interests ranging from ragtime to

MALCOLM SKED
When he was sixteen, after a few years playing
in his local brass band, Malcolm joined the
Charleston Chasers on sousaphone. It was the
beginning of a 15-year run with the band. He
joined Bob Kerr’s Whoopee Band in 2000 and
toured extensively around Europe with them.
He has since taken up the string bass and is
now a popular bass player, as illustrated by his
many appearances in bands at this year’s
festival. Playing with Paul Munnery’s Harlem

MARTIN LITTON, JANICE DAY
AND THE DANCE BAND DIVAS
Martin’s early career included touring with
Harry Gold and Kenny Ball. Later work included
recordings with leading British musicians such
as Humphrey Lyttleton, Wally Fawkes and
Digby Fairweather, and more recently Claire
Teal, Guy Barker and the Buck Clayton Legacy
Band. He has also performed with many
musicians from abroad including Bob Wilbur,
Scott Hamilton, Wild Bill Davidson, Kenny
Davern, Peanuts Hucko and others.
With Keith Nichol’s Cotton Club Orchestra, The
Piccadilly Dance Orchestra and other groups,
Janice Day has entertained thousands on

stages as grand as the Royal Festival Hall, The
Wigmore Hall, The Ritz, Claridges, Café Royal
and The Savoy. She has also ventured into
journalism, screen-writing and stand-up
comedy. Martin and Janice formed The Dance
Band Divas, an (almost) all-girl band of topclass musicians, who will perform two
beautifully crafted shows for you at Keswick.
Firstly The Vintage Vocalists whose show was
the inspiration behind the Dance Band Divas
formation. It tells the tale of the mostly
forgotten girl singers of the 1920s and 30s. The
show is a tribute to those wonderful vocalists,
including Josephine Baker, Ethel Waters, Ruth
Etting, Annette Hanshaw, Anne Lenner,
Mildred Bailey and many more.
The second show, Fats Waller in Love, is brand
new and explores Fats Waller’s love life, with a
tale woven from a tribute to his recordings. He
may not have written the words of most of the
songs he recorded, but he certainly lived the
stories behind them. ‘Whose Honey are You?’,
‘Until the Real Thing Comes Along’, and ‘Anita’
are wonderful in themselves. Dig deeper and
you can’t help wondering who really stole Fats
Waller’s heart? In this fascinating and
musically satisfying show, each of the
romantic love interests in Fats Waller’s life gets
to speak, and the audience decides…
The Dance Band Divas are Martin Litton
(pianist, arranger), Janice Day (vocalist),
Rebecca Toft (trumpet), Sue Greenway
(reeds), Ellie Smith (trombone), Emily O’Hara
(banjo), Julie Walkington (bass) and Lizy

MARTIN WHEATLEY
An inventive, virtuosic and tasteful player of
almost anything that has strings – guitars of all
kinds, ukulele, banjo, bass guitar and probably
a few instruments you’ve never heard of.
Martin specializes in musical styles of the 1920s,
30s and 40s; jazz, blues, and in recent years,
Hawaiian. His repertoire on ukulele includes
pieces that might seem impossible to play on
the instrument – from Debussy to the
Dambusters March! He performs regularly with
all the top vintage jazz stylists and at Keswick
will be playing with The Basin Street Brawlers,
Enrico Tomasso’s Riverboat Shufflers, The
Nevada Street Band and joining Thomas
‘Spats’ Langham for a show entitled Fun on
the Frets, when the two of them will put on a
magnificent performance of musical
acrobatics and entertainment like you’ve
never heard on banjos and guitars.

MART RODGER
MANCHESTER JAZZ
It was over thirty years ago, inspired by a trip
to New Orleans by Mart and his wife Janet,
and at Janet’s suggestion, that Mart Rodger
Manchester Jazz was formed. Taking their
cues from the early New Orleans and Chicago
jazz musicians – as well as from the great
British jazz revivalists of the 40s and 50s – the
band works as a team to ensure that every
MATTHIAS SEUFFERT (GERMANY)
A highly regarded clarinet and saxophone
player, his stylistic range covers early jazz and
swing through to bebop. His talent was
recognised from a young age, winning the Prix
Sidney d’Or in France in 1992. Matthias is
popular internationally as a soloist, ensemble
player and arranger. His own creative and
bluesy style has been inspired by such diverse
players as Johnny Dodds, Buddy de Franco,
Coleman Hawkins, Benny Golson, Benny
Carter and Charlie Parker. He now performs
regularly with top French trumpeter Patrick
Artero, has co-led the European Blue Rhythm
Makers with Keith Nichols for several years,
and also co-leads the Buck Clayton Legacy
Band with British jazz-writer and bassist Alyn
Shipton. At Keswick he will be playing with the
Keswick Festival Saxophones, The Keswick
Festival Orchestra and Alan Barnes’
Remembering the Rabbit, as well as leading
the Seuffert /Whiting Quintet. This is a rare
opportunity to hear these two clarinet and
saxophone masters performing together,

MIKE HENRY
Since starting off as a youngster in local brass
bands in Lancashire, Mike has since played
with leading brass bands, classical orchestras
and jazz bands far and wide. For twelve years
he was lead trumpet player in the Pasadena
Roof Orchestra and he has played with the Big
Chris Barber Band since 2000. He has also
performed with the other two ‘Bs’, Bilk and Ball,
as well as most other leading bands on the UK
vintage jazz scene in the last 35 years. One of
those rare musicians who, despite his big
powerful sound, makes it look very easy. Mike
will be co-leading the Joan Viskant / Mike
Henry Band, playing with the Keswick
Festival Orchestra and with the Keswick
Cable Street Band. Playing: Fri – Sun
NICKI ALLAN
A versatile vocalist and pianist with a secret
past in bass playing, Nicki discovered her vocal
talents while studying Jazz and Contemporary
Music at Leeds College of Music. She is now a
principal vocal tutor at Royal Northern College
of Music and has a hectic schedule singing for
television, recording for bands, songwriting
and performing with bands large and small.
Whether singing jazz, soul, gospel or blues, her
rich tone and musical approach allows her to
connect with and inspire even the most
hardened of audiences. Catch her singing with
The Three Bears on Sunday, and also
performing solo in The Golden Lion earlier on
in the day. Playing: Sun
MIKE OWEN
Born in Birmingham, Mike discovered New
Orleans jazz as a teenager. After studying at
Leeds College of Music he moved to New
Orleans for ten years, working in Preservation
Hall, on riverboats and on Bourbon Street.
After a spell with Phil Mason’s All Stars in the
UK, he moved to Denmark and ran his own
bands, The Bordello Bedwarmers and The
Woodland Jazz Band. Mike has now returned
to the UK where he delights audiences lucky
enough to hear him with his strong and
rhythmic playing, very much inspired by his
idol, Kid Ory. This year he will appear with
Jeff Barnhart’s Wild Nights in Harlem,

NICK WARD
Now one of the UK’s most sought-after
vintage style drummers, Nick started playing
in the late 1970s with the bands of John
Minnion and Ken Ingram. He is a particular
admirer of the drummers Zutty Singleton,
Baby Dodds and Stan King, and always plays
on original vintage drum kits. Nick has now
appeared on over forty recordings and is well
travelled as a musician.
At Keswick he will perform with Paul
Munnery’s Harlem Club Crawl, The Joan
Viskant / Mike Henry Band, The Keswick
Festival Orchestra, Richard White’s Fivers,
The Keswick Cable Street Band, and Jeff
Barnhart’s Leaders of the Pack, as well as
leading Nick Ward’s Jelly Roll Trio, a brilliant
and exciting 20s style Chicago south side trio
opening the festival in the Methodist Church
after a packed session last year, with John
Maddocks (reeds) and Jon Penn (piano).

NICOLA FARNON TRIO
PAUL MUNNERY
Paul is a trombone player known for his
forthright and fiery delivery in the manner of
JC Higginbotham, Joe Nanton and Dicky
Wells. He is also well known as a band leader,
having founded the Harlem Jazz Orchestra in
1981, playing big band music of the 20s and
30s, which he ran for many years, as well as a
host of other smaller groups allowing him to
play the music he loves. This year in Keswick he
will play with the Dorine de Wit band and the
New Orleans Hot Potatoes and lead a couple
of bands formed for the festival.
Nicola leads her trio with her enchanting
voice, dynamic bass playing and outgoing
personality. The three musicians combine to
give a performance that will startle you with
its genuine love of music and melody. The late
Humphrey Lyttleton said of them, “I declare
that she is a class act who should be on every
jazz festival in the land. A sure fire hit!” And
who are we to question Humph? Nicola is
joined by Piero Tucci (piano, saxophone) and
Phil Johnson (drums).
First up is The Black Mountain Serenaders
who bring to their performance a tempting
potpourri of the many ingredients that
blended into jazz about a century ago stomps, blues, spirituals, popular song, African
rhythms and European folk music. With a
repertoire of New Orleans standards, dances
and maybe a surprise or two, Paul is joined by
Steve Graham (trumpet), John Scantlebury
(reeds), Geoff Over (banjo) and Mike
Kennedy (bass).
This year the trio will remain in Keswick for a
second performance, providing the rhythm
section for a sensational meeting of two of
the festival’s most popular saxophone and
clarinet players, Alan Barnes and John
Hallam. Playing: Sun
Secondly, Harlem Club Crawl will take the
audience on a tour of nightclubs, cabarets,
speakeasies and piano bars, which proliferated
in their hundreds in 1920/30s Harlem. Much of
the band’s repertoire reflects Harlem’s liberal
appetites and lifestyle, so expect raunchy
blues, double-entendre song lyrics, and
anecdotes of the activities of musicians,
gangsters and eccentrics. Assisted by Richard
White (reeds), Thomas ‘Spats’ Langham
(banjo, guitar), Keith Nichols (piano), Nick
Ward (drums) and Malcolm Sked (bass,
sousa). Playing: Thu, Fri

PETE HORSFALL
Pete Horsfall returns to Keswick this year with
his fabulous Basin Street Brawlers from
London. Pete is a powerful and exciting
trumpeter inspired by the playing of Wild Bill
Davidson and Mugsy Spanier. The Basin Street
Brawlers are described as London’s “top hot
jazz ensemble”, renowned for delivering their
music “with all the energy and assurance of a
bunch of Kansas City veterans”. Their debut
record It’s Tight Like That has garnered critical
acclaim, described as a work of “world class
musicianship”. Joining Pete are Ewan Bleach
(reeds), Malcolm Earle-Smith (trombone),
Colin Good (piano), Martin Wheatley
(guitar, banjo), Dave O’Brien (bass) and Jack
Cotterill (drums).
Pete will also present a show named The
Biggest Little Band in the Land - The Music
of John Kirby. He will explore the music of
John Kirby’s band, one of the more significant
small bands in the big band era of the late 30s,
with its own characterful style. Assisting Pete
will be Trevor Whiting and Ewan Bleach
(reeds), Jeff Barnhart (piano), Dave O’Brien
(bass) and John Watson (drums). Pete will
also play with Jeff Barnhart’s Wild Nights in
Harlem. Playing: Thu, Fri

PETER RUDEFORTH
Peter grew up in Aberystwyth in Wales and
began playing the trumpet at the age of seven.
By the age of sixteen he was playing live on
radio and TV and performing concertos,
including a recording the Vivaldi trumpet
concerto. He also formed his own jazz band
and, in time, joined the ranks of the Charleston
Chasers, Piccadilly Dance Orchestra and the
Palm Court Theatre Orchestra. In 2008 he
joined The Big Chris Barber Jazz Band in which
his sparkling trumpet playing has been a
feature ever since. This year he will play with TJ
Johnson’s Bourbon Kick, and Richard Exall’s
Shooting Stars. Playing: Thu, Fri
REMI HARRIS TRIO
Remi and his trio win accolades wherever they
play; Jamie Cullum has been singing his praises
ever since first hearing him just over a year ago
saying, “[Remi is an] incredible guitarist. I’m
absolutely blown away by his talent, amazing”.
Remi was born in Hereford into a creative
family and taught himself to play the guitar
from CDs, magazines and videos. When he
was twenty he immersed himself in gypsy jazz
music and is now recognised as a leader in this
style. The Remi Harris Trio breathe fresh life
into the genre, playing a mixture of jazz and
swing standards, popular songs and original
compositions. They will perform at midday
with John Hallam (reeds) as a guest and as
the trio in the evening with Remi Harris
(guitar), AC Wood (guitar) and Mike Green
(bass). Playing: Sat
RICHARD LEACH
RICHARD EXALL
After studying at the Royal College of Music,
Richard juggled jobs in orchestras such as the
London Symphony Orchestra, with top Cuban
musicians in Latin bands, in West End shows,
with his own award-winning jazz band as well
as writing and arranging. More recently he has
become better known in the vintage jazz
fraternity, playing with the Pasadena Roof
Orchestra, the Charleston Chasers, the Big
Chris Barber Band and running a number of
groups that appear at clubs and festivals up
and down the land.
Richard Exall’s Shooting Stars was formed in
2008 with fellow Chris Barber musician Pete
Rudeforth (trumpet). The band is mostly at
home playing the beautiful melodies and
stomping jazz from the 20s, 30s and 40s,
where they can exploit the bands virtuosity,
with exciting solos and tight ensemble
passages. For Keswick this year the band also
features Mike Owen (trombone), Alan
Haughton (piano), Malcolm Sked (bass) and
John Watson (drums). The Krupa
Connection remembers one of the most
influential drummers in jazz history, who led a
number of bass-less trios at the end of the 40s
when the larger bands were being cut back or
winding up. The session stars Richard Exall
(reeds), Alan Haughton (piano) and John
Watson (drums). Richard will also perform
with the Keswick Festival Orchestra, Keswick
Festival Saxophones, and two bands that he
runs jointly with Amy Roberts, The Richard
Exall / Amy Roberts Quintet and the
Magnificent Seven Jazz Band (see Amy
Roberts’ entry for details). Playing: Fri, Sat
A tireless band leader and no stranger to
Keswick audiences, trombonist Richard Leach
ran his own Northside Jazz Band for twenty-six
years before touring with The Pete Allen Jazz
Band for six years. He now runs his Seven Stars
of Jazz and Clubhouse Five bands, as well as
co-leading Slide By Slide with Kevin Grenfell.
This year he will lead two bands, broadly based
on his own. Firstly, the Keswick Clubhouse
Five, a light-hearted and entertaining band,
with vocals all-round. Expect glittering playing
from the class line-up joining Richard including
George Huxley (reeds), Gary Wood (trumpet),
Brian Mellor (banjo, guitar) and John Fellows
(bass). Secondly, Richard will lead Festival
Stars of Jazz, a 7-piece line-up inspired by the
Alex Welsh band, with an eclectic mix of
Chicago, swing and Dixieland, plus a touch of
vaudeville thrown in for good measure!
Gathered with Richard in the Marquee for this
performance will be Gary Wood (trumpet),
John Hallam (reeds), Jeff Barnhart (piano),
Brian Mellor (banjo, guitar), John Fellows
(bass) and Graham Smith (drums).

RICHARD WHITE
Richard is an original stylist with a highly
characterful tone. A multi-instrumentalist, he
is equally at home on bass saxophone as he is
on clarinet, and is also known for his expressive
vocals. In the 1990s, Richard toured the USA
four times with the Rio Trio. More recently he
toured with Bryan Ferry and can be heard on
the soundtrack of Baz Luhrmann’s film
adaptation of The Great Gatsby. As well as
appearing with Paul Munnery’s Harlem Club
Crawl, Enrico Tomasso’s Riverboat Shufflers
and the Nevada Street Band he brings his
own band to Keswick, the White’s Fivers Band,
loosely based on the style of Jimmy Noone’s
Apex Club Orchestra. They do not attempt to
copy the Old Masters, but hope that some of
the spirit of jazz-mad 20s Chicago is rekindled.
With Richard White and Ewan Bleach (reeds),
Colin Good (piano), Dave O’Brien (bass) and
Nick Ward (drums). Playing: Thu – Sat
ROY WILLIAMS
Roy Williams is a world class trombone player,
and fourteen-time winner of the British Jazz
Award for trombone, who came to
prominence playing with the Alex Welsh band
for thirteen years. He joined Humphrey
Lyttleton’s band for a spell before touring the
world with The World’s Greatest Jazz Band and
playing alongside Ruby Braff, Vic Dickenson,
Peanuts Hucko and others. He is noted for his
inventive improvisation and impeccable

SAVANNAH JAZZ BAND
Formed in 1979 in Huddersfield, the Savannah
Jazz Band is one of the most popular
traditional jazz bands around, appearing at
every Keswick Jazz Festival since the first. With
their talent for satisfying listeners and dancers
alike, they have built up a truly international
reputation, built on the fun, excitement and
raw good music generated whenever they take
to the stage. They specialise in an energetic
New Orleans style and keep adding new
numbers to their wide repertoire so that their
programme is never predictable. Their
continuing loyal support from so many fans is
a testament to the fine musicians in the band,
Bill Smith (trumpet), Brian Ellis (trombone),
Roger Myerscough (reeds), Tony Pollitt (bass),
Chris Marney (banjo), John Meehan (drums).
John Meehan will join John Minnion, the
festival organiser for twenty-three years, on
Saturday morning from 10–11am for a jazz talk
reminiscing about a quarter-century of the
Keswick Jazz Festival. Playing: Sun
SPIKE KENNEDY AND
SARAH THATCHER
Two bands involving Spike Kennedy, a
dynamic string bass player from South Wales,
and his partner Sarah Thatcher, a popular
banjo and guitar player. Black Cat Jazz is an
exciting new band playing top class New
Orleans jazz and combining some of the most
accomplished proponents of the style
currently working in the UK. This year they will
also lead the morning jazz service in the
Methodist Church. The band is fronted by fine
trumpeter Steve Graham, alongside Tom
Wittingham blowing trombone and
internationally-acclaimed John Scantlebury
taking the spotlight on reeds. Joining Spike
and Sarah in the rhythm section is
powerhouse drummer Pete Winterhart, the
driving force behind the band.
New Orleans Hot Potatoes specialise in the
‘smaller band’ approach to New Orleans jazz,
inspired by the George Lewis quartets and play
a range of hot dancehall jazz, blues and gospel
tunes. After an inauspicious debut on a windswept bandstand in Brecon, playing to an
assortment of sheep, hikers, dog walkers and
bemused teenagers, the New Orleans Hot
Potatoes are now a regular fixture in the South
Wales jazz scene. The band is John
Scantlebury (reeds), Paul Munnery
(trombone), Sarah Thatcher (banjo) and
Spike Kennedy (bass). Spike will also appear
with the Paul Munnery’s Black Mountain
Serenaders, and Sarah will also appear with A
Breeze from New Orleans. Playing: Thu – Sun
TAD NEWTON’S JAZZ FRIENDS
Tad Newton has been running his Jazz Friends
band for over thirty years now, as well as
running a number of popular clubs and
festivals. His band is inspired by the music of
Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Count
Basie, but they don’t like to tie themselves
down too much so they may stretch out into
other genres and eras including blues. At the
heart of the band is the desire to entertain and
Tad believes his current line-up is his most
inventive, exciting and creative yet. With Tad
Newton (trombone), Gary Wood (trumpet),
Trevor Whiting (reeds), Alan Haughton
(piano), Thomas Pederson (bass), Ronnie
Fenn (drums). Playing: Thu
THE BROWNFIELD BYRNE
HOT SIX
Since Liam Byrne (sax) and Jamie Brownfield
(trumpet) formed this band it has developed
its own distinctive sound, inspired by the swing
era stylists of the late 1930s and early 1940s,
performing music by the likes of Louis
Armstrong, Bix Biederbeck, Fats Waller, early
Duke Ellington and the John Kirby sextet. Liam
Byrne writes many of the band’s arrangements,
often featuring tightly harmonized melodies
played by the two horns and Andy Hulme
(guitar). Completing the Hot Six is Tom
Kincaid (piano), Jack Cotterill (drums) and
on Saturday Jim Swinnerton (bass) and
Sunday Bruce Rollo (bass). Playing: Thu – Sun

THOMAS ‘SPATS’ LANGHAM
Spats grew up in Buxton, where he started
playing ukulele as soon as his fingers were big
enough, and turned to banjo at the age of ten.
While playing with Ged Hone’s Dixie Boys as a
teenager, Ged encouraged him to take up the
guitar. He is now established as one of the
major stars of classic jazz in Britain – a brilliant
instrumentalist, a natural entertainer, and fine
vocalist, particularly in the Al Bowlly style. He
has travelled the four corners of the globe,
playing with seemingly any leading classic jazz
band and musician you care to mention. We
are lucky to have him here in Keswick playing
with Paul Munnery’s Harlem Club Crawl, The
Joan Viskant / Mike Henry Band, Keswick
Festival Orchestra, The Elemental Jazz
Quartet, and a special show with fellow banjo
/ guitar player Martin Wheatley called Fun on

these two masters of their instruments meet.

TJ JOHNSON
TJ is a highly respected international jazz and
blues pianist and singer. He sings songs of love
lost and gained, of hope and despair, songs of
the night, all with passion and swagger,
bringing everyone together in an intimate and
inspiring journey. He taught himself the piano
listening to records as a youngster in Stockport.
When just sixteen he went on the road with
the Max Collie Rhythm Aces (from whom he
acquired his pseudonym), living in a van and
performing all over Europe. He left Max after a
few years and has been running his own bands
ever since. He brings his brilliant band to play
for us in Keswick, which includes Al Nichols
(tenor sax), Tony Pitt (guitar), Bruce Rollo
(bass), Jack Cotterill (drums).
Cotterill (drums), known collectively as The
Three Bears, performing with Alex Welsh

Hot Six, and with Eugene Farrar, Nicki Allan
and Frank Brooker and, as if that’s not

Festival Trombones performance on Saturday.

TOM WHITTINGHAM
TOM KINCAID
Tom Kincaid is a renowned jazz pianist based
in the North West of England. Known for his
unique piano style, evocative of the great
pianists from the golden jazz era – Errol Garner,
Oscar Peterson, Teddy Wilson, etc. Tom plays a
diverse repertoire ranging from New Orleans
blues and gospel to mainstream swing and
jazz standards. He is sought after by
musicians all over the country and has backed
many of the luminaries of the international
jazz scene, including recently Scott Hamilton,
Alan Barnes, Mark Nightingale, Bruce Adams,
Karen Sharpe and many more.
Tom is a very familiar face to Keswick
audiences, first playing at the festival twelve
years ago. Tom grew up surrounded by jazz.
His parents, Jill and Clive, were both members
of Alice’s Wonderland Band. Aged fifteen, Tom
joined them in the band on drums and
washboard. A few years later he took up the
trombone and, soon after, sousaphone as well.
Now most familiar on the jazz scene as a
trombone player, he plays with Steve Graham’s
Classic Jazz and New Orleans band, Denis
Armstrong’s Bristol Blue Five and more recently
A Breeze from New Orleans, in which he plays
euphonium. This year you’ll catch him
appearing with A Breeze from New Orleans
and with Black Cat Jazz. Playing: Fri – Sun
He brings to Keswick The Tom Kincaid Trio,
which includes Frank Grime (bass) and Gaz
Hughes (drums). They will be part of three
different quintets; Roy Williams and John
Burgess; Anthony Kerr and Pete Long; and
with Enrico Tomasso and Roy Williams.
Tom will also be working in a rhythm section
team with Jim Swinnerton (bass), and Jack

TONY PITT
Tony grew up surrounded by music, listening to
78 rpm records of Harry James, Benny Moten
and Al Jolson, and with parents and brother
playing piano, banjo and violin. He joined the
Crescent City Stompers on banjo with his
brother Vic. Tony then learned guitar for the
band’s skiffle group in 1955, and was soon
gigging every night in London while trying to
study engineering in Kent. He subsequently
spent four years with Alex Welsh, ten with
Acker Bilk, another ten on and off with Kenny
Ball touring the world (all interspersed with
short spells of retiring to try to get a ‘proper
job’!). He moved on to bands run by Alan
Elsdon, Laurie Chescoe, Terry Lightfoot, Phil
Mason, and more recently TJ Johnson. After
half a century of playing with some of the top
bands Tony has no intentions of hanging up his
instruments. He is still an inspiration to the
many who hear him. Catch him this year
playing with the TJ Johnson Band, with TJ
Johnson’s Bourbon Kick and leading his own
band, The Tony Pitt All Stars. In Tony’s own
words, his band is about “the hot, foottapping traditional jazz we all enjoyed playing,
listening or dancing to in those far-off days
back in the 60s”. He says that while we can’t
go back to those times, it’ll take us as close as
we can get. Featuring Tony Pitt (banjo),
Denny Illet (trumpet), Roy Williams
(trombone), Al Nichols (sax), Bruce Rollo
(bass) and John Meehan (drums). Tony will
also join Roy Williams to give a jazz talk on
Friday morning from 10–11am about their
experiences touring the world with various
band leaders. Playing: Thu – Sat

TREVOR WHITING
Trevor Whiting was inspired to take up the

LARION MYAKICHEFF
A collection of multi-media works
influenced by the artist’s global
travels
Brian O’Connor has always been
interested in photography. Hearing
Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd playing
Desafinado in the 1960s drew him in to
the world of jazz: from 1971 he merged
the two hobbies, and started taking his
camera to venues. Over 40 years later
this is still the case, with this exhibition
showing just a few examples of the
many he has taken. The whole
collection can viewed at
www.imagesofjazz.com.
Larion studied life drawing and
sculpture at the Camberwell Art School
in the mid-1960s but was
side-tracked away from a career in the
Arts by a curiosity as to what lay over
the hill. Because of this he spent the
next several decades travelling the
world, initially looking for answers to a
headful of questions. Then as a long
distance trucker, he eventually became
involved with touring rock bands as a
road manager and technician. He
rediscovered his love of the Arts in 2010
and has held exhibitions at The Candid
Gallery, Islington; The Jeannieavent
Gallery, Dulwich; Market Drayton Arts
Centre and Cranleigh Art Centre, Surrey.
National Jazz Archive
