Eucharist of
Service and Sacrifice
I
n the Gospel of John there is no Institution of the
Eucharist at the Last Supper, but it is substituted
by Jesus washing the feet of the disciples at the
beginning of the meal. Many people ask why? Has
John deliberately done it ?
Eucharist is a sacrifice. It is a sacrifice of Jesus on the
cross for humanity. Sacrifice means giving oneself for
others, for giving new life for others “I sacrifice my life
to give life to others”.
Thus, Washing of the feet is another dimension of
the same Eucharist. Why Jesus washed the feet of the
disciples and what was the message he wanted to give?
To know this we should know the background and the
customs of the Palestine at the time of Jesus.
Palestine was semi-desert region where the winding
roads were full of mud, dust and stones. So when a
guest came walking through these streets, his legs
would be full of dust and bruises due to the stones.
Hence it was the duty of the house servant to wash
the feet of the guests with water and give him the oil
massage.
At the Last Supper the disciples had come walking on
those dusty roads to the inn. But since the inn was
taken from somebody for the Last supper, there was
no servant to wash the feet of the guests. So when
the disciples came to the inn they were not ready to
wash their own feet since it was an act of humiliation.
Further, none of them were also ready to wash each
other’s feet since washing the others feet was greater
humiliation as only the servants did it. They wanted
to be greater than the other. So all the disciples walked
to the inn with their dusty feet. Further, none of them
came forward even to wash the feet of Jesus he being
their master.
Again during the time of Jesus the meal was not taken
sitting on the chair and taking food on the table. But
all were reclining around a small table with their feet
towards the table (tepoy). So did the apostles. So when
Jesus came in he saw the 24 dusty feet of the disciples
and he knew the reason.
So Jesus gave them the real meaning of the Last Supper
– the Eucharist - by washing their feet. Finally he said,
“Do you understand what I have just done to you… I,
though being your Lord and Teacher, have just washed
your feet; you should then wash the feet of each
other….A new commandment I will give you, love one
another as I have loved you”.
Tidings 3
Vol. 4-4, March 2014
The meaning of the washing the feet means to serve
other, to sacrifice one’s life for others, to love others
irrespective of caste, colour and creed even loving our
enemies, ie., to become Eucharist to the others.

We can also become Eucharist to the others. A few
examples could be given:
1. There was a couple who had no children. Even
after much medical consultation and medication
they couldn’t get children. Finally they adopted
a boy from the poorest family. They spend all his
educational fees. Today he is one of the famous
orthopedic doctors in Delhi. In turn he is now
helping many other children in their education.
What a joy to the couple.
2. A mother who was a primary teacher had three
girl children. When the youngest was barely one
year old, the husband died in a tragic accident. The
mother didn’t lose courage. Besides teaching in the
school, she gave tuition to other children both in
the morning and in the evening; then cook, Clean
the house and send the children to the school.
With great struggle and hard work she gave good
education to the three girls. Today they are able to
stand on their own feet and face the hardships of
life.

3. A youth named Allwyn was working in a hospital.
Seeing the suffering of the people especially the
abandoned beggars on the road side his heart
melted. After the work he would pick them up, take
them to a shed, would give them bath, bandage
their wounds and give them some good food to eat.
He would spend from his own meager resources.
Seeing his good work other youth joined, many
benefactors contributed and today they have
started a home for these destitute , the physically
and mentally challenged people. Though in the
beginning many laughed at him, abused him
and even arrested by the police, yet his charity
continued of washing the feet of the poorest of the
poor.
We get thousands of examples of the people even
today who sacrifice their time, energy, resources
and even their very life to wash the feet of the poor,
to wipe the tears of the suffering and give new life
to those who lost hope.
Shall we be also counted among these elect of
Christ, unto the example of Christ, to wash the feet
of the poor and become Eucharist to the others?

We are called to break the
bread by breaking ourselves…
I
Editorial
n this issue we focus on ‘Eucharist: The source
and summit of Christian Life’.
All articles
penned briefly suggest ways to renew our life.
The Eucharist has always been, and, will always be
central to the worship of God. As rightly pointed
out in the talks by the priestly order during this year
of the Eucharist, we are called to share the Mass as
fully as we can and Christ desires us to do so – The
Lord has been given to us as food. Jesus is our bread,
he is our sustenance. In Jn 6, Jesus tells us that I
am the bread of life…. will never die. We are called
to eat His flesh and drink His blood, consume Him.
Fasting, Almsgiving, Prayers will flow if we consume
Him.
Just like we charge our mobiles to keep it going, the
Eucharist is our charging station. Our Eucharist has
to take place twenty four hours. We have to take the
Eucharist with us, through the day and night. We
are called to break the bread by breaking ourselves
at home, workplace, in our society, at the time of
travelling etc., – to show love, intimacy, acceptance
as well as unity.
Is there a better time than this season of Lent? Lent
is a time to focus. We need to start from within.
It’s about us - to reflect, examine our conscience,
anticipate and have an attitude of gratitude. We are
called to transform ourselves and also be transparent
like Mary, our Mother – to live a life where we need
to give Jesus to others. What better way than to die
to our old style and way of thinking, our routine
methods, our selfishness to become new wine for
others.
Let us remember that Easter Sunday follows after
every Good Friday. On this note, ‘Tidings Team’,
wish one and all a fruitful and transforming Season
of Lent and a Joyous and Spirit Filled Easter.

Altar servers
There have been multiple celebrations in the altar servers
association, beginning from the Christmas season: the first
celebration was that of a joint Christmas party for both the
children from the altar servers association and Carmel blossoms
which had a value session in which they were told a Christmas
story. They also played games and had fun. To make the celebration
more joyful, sweets and snacks were served. This was followed by
the New Year party where 20 altar servers along with Fr. Michael
and Br.Pawan and 3 animators visited “Sneha Sadhana” -Old Age
Home. The altar server played games, sang carols and danced
with each and every member of the home. They were also served
sweets by the children. It is rightly said, “Even a minor event in
the life of a child is an event of that child’s world and thus a world
event.” Seeking the blessings of the senior members, the children
returned overjoyed.
The third and the most awaited celebration of the year was the
“Annual Day”. It was celebrated on 22nd February. It all began
with a prayer dance, followed by many cultural events like Musical
piece, fusion dance, a skit based on the theme, “The Good Always
Wins!!”. The newest events of this year, were, ‘The Fashion Show’ by
our little children and dance by altar servers animators. More than
8o children performed on stage .Fr.Dominic Vas and Fr.Michael
enlightened every altar server with their beautiful speeches about
the important role that an altar server plays in the church and
the society. A grand farewell was given to the 10th Std children
namely, Adrian, Silvan, Wendolle, Frino, Larena, Carol, Chris who
had served Jesus at the altar for many years. The annual report
was presented to the congregation through a video. Prizes were
distributed to the children excelling in different areas like highest
points for attendance, highest number of servings, News paper
collection, Exam, etc.As a memento for their service throughout
the year, all the children were presented with a certificate and gifts.
The event was witnessed by a large gathering who appreciated the
whole program. This year’s annual day was truly the most enjoyable
and memorable one. We also take this opportunity to thank all
those who have helped us for the success of this entire program.
May God shower His blessings on them and their families. Hats off
to all the animators and our dear lovely altar servers.

Eucharist &
Relationship
T
o be Loved, To be Wanted, To be appreciated...
Have you not felt this need to be related?
Today, Relationship need is more intense than
ever. If You and I sincerely ask ourselves, we will say,
“Yes we are substituting our real relationship with
virtual relationship: (See the time we spend with T.V,
Smartphones, Facebook etc).
A bus had an accident. It was topsey turvey, with
some parts badly dented. But surprisingly no one was
hurt in that upside down bus. All came out and some
were pulled out. But one lady was trapped under the
junk where no one could reach to extricate her. She
was screaming there, though unhurt. One young man
removed his coat, rolled under the bus with much
difficulty. He went near enough to touch the tip of her
finger. The moment his finger tip touched her finger
tip, her scream of anguish stopped. The crane came
three hours late and lifted the bus. The young lady,
of course married instantly stood up, and hugged the
young man and exclaimed, ``In my life, Never did I
feel so related as during those three hours”!
Related? What Related? Tip of the finger?
Yes my friends, when we are chaotically, confusedly
dashing into blind alleys or wrong relationships, Holy
Eucharist is the answer. Holy Eucharist can purify and
intensify our human relationship
1. Eucharist in the Bible
(A). Eucharist in the Old Testament.
In the Old Testament: Never decreasing, fully satisfying
manna for all (Ex.16,6). Don’t we sing, “bread from
heaven you gave them, having in it all its sweetness”?
In Ex.17,2-7, We see water gushed out from the rock
for all to drink. In Numb. 20,11-13, Moses doubted
and struck the rock twice. Yahweh was pained because
Moses doubted God’s relationship. He never reached
the promised land.
(B). Eucharist in the New Testament
In New Testament we see Eucharist is essentially
relational (Jn.6,1-14) A boy gave all he had. He
preferred relationship with Jesus to his own self need.
In V.48 We see, Eucharistic relationship is forever.
Jesus seems to say, “I am giving you not what I have, I
am giving you, what I am. At this juncture, let me share
with you my own ‘Crazy’ reflection of “LIFE”. Life is a
lie if there is not ‘F’ in it. And ‘F’ stands for Friendship
Tidings 7
Vol. 4-4, March 2014
, Faith in Friendship, Firmness in Frienship, and
Forgiveness in Friendship.
This is what Jesus is in the Holy Eucharist. Jesus in the
Eucharist is thus intensely related to us.
2. Eucharist among Early Christians
(a) Early Christians could never think of Holy Eucharist
except as a community celebration, Sacrifice and meal.
The word “SACRIFICE” comes from two Latin words:
‘SACRUM’ ‘FACERE’ = To Make SACRED.
In the first Century, King Hadrian wanted to eliminate
‘These Christians’ “Who are these Christians” he asked
Aristides, the famous historian. His report, “They are
people who say some prayers and distribute some
bread in their gatherings. But they are mainly known
for their love for one another. They save the orphans
lest they be hardened: If they have something, they
give it to the one who have nothing.
(Not vertebrating, quoted from Zuck Roy, speakers
Quote Book, Page :234)
(b) And that is why Paul condemns in very strong
words those who receives Holy Communion without
relationship in Community.
1 Cor 20 “Your gatherings are no more Supper of the
Lord. Each one eats at once his own food and while
one is hungry, the other one is getting drunk…… So
if anyone eats of the bread….Unworthily (Without
Relationship) (In Brackets Mine)….He Eats……His
own Condemnation.
Conclusion
Yours and my Relationship with Eucharist will result in
experiences that Jesus also experienced.
1.
2.
3.
4.
Abba experience.
Mission experience.
Victim experience
Paschal experience.
1. Abba experience.
The famous three chapters of Jn (15,16,17) abundantly
shows Jesus constant, close relationship with Abba. In
New Testament, We find 107 References to Abba, Jesus
expressing he is the bosom of the Father.
If you have dealt with others with a maternal
(PATERNAL) attitude, It is a proof you have had Abba
Experience, an Outflow of your Eucharistic Life.
2. Mission experience
Once when Jesus was anointed, He could not contain
his zeal, zest and I would say, his Volcano. We are
impacted by his Mission statement in Luke 4:18-19.

Your one ‘HOT’ encounter with Jesus, has to explode
in your entire days external behaviour. Someone even
might say, “Why are you smiling so much today”. It
might be your Mission experience.
If a boy secures 98% marks, If one wins 10 crore lottery,
Will they keep quiet? So if you had Holy Eucharist in
the morning, you must have this mission experience.
3. Victim experience
In his efforts for Salvific, healing relationships, he
suffered much. “He has Belzebul in him” “Is he not
Carpenter`s son”? In the Climax of his sacrificial
relationship with us all, All the four categories insulted
him - The soldiers, the passers - by, the High Priests and
the thief. There was a momentary cloud of darkness
and void between him and Abba. And you Jesus cry
in Ps.23.
But Jesus never gave up. On the contrary, he gifted us 3
intense relationships:1. Gift of heaven (thief on the right),
So you will undergo this victim experience…..your
partner / Family member lives in Scandalous sin, You
are not allowed Family Prayers, Statues or Picture of
the Mother Mary. You don’t join Pornography, Drinks
or Smoking…. You stand for honesty….and for this
you suffer. But never give up. Continue to be graceful,
extrovert, altruistic. Your Lord has walked before
you triumphantly. Why not you, his Disciple? Only
intimate-relationship-people know victim experience
4. Paschal Experience
There are peak experiences of relationship in
Eucharistic people. Jesus himself said, “When I am
lifted up, I will draw everyone to myself ”.
In John Chs 5, 15, 16, 17, We see Jesus full of joy, asks
Abba, “Father, Glorify your Son”
I dare to say only Eucharistic persons enjoy the intense
human relationships. Eucharistic connectivity ignited
during mass, lingers, percolates in all and with all.
Whenever I celebrate mass with him alone in mind and
heart, I feel warm and affectionate all through the day.
2. Forgiveness of our sins (Father forgive them)
3. Gift of his own Mother.
We, Eucharistic people are bound to be misunderstood,
because Eucharistic relationship is unique, out of the
ordinary, and something you are an odd man out.
Peak experience is not reserved to so called mystics!.
Any Eucharistically related person does experience
Paschal experience. Sometimes, it is glimpses and
sparks.

W
hen the early Christians in Luke’s community
prayed the Lord’s prayer, (Lk. 11:1-13)
according to reputed commentators, what
they asked for in the petition “Give us each day our
daily bread” was not so much that God take care of
their every day needs. Scripture scholars tell us that
the word daily is a mistranslation of the original
Greek word “espiousios.” Various translations have
suggested for this Greek, term, but keeping in mind
that it is term that was coined by the Christians, we
could conclude that they coined this term because it
expresses a reality for which no other existing term
was adequate. They were referring, therefore, to a very
special, distinctively Christian Bread.
And what could this be, if not the Eucharistic
Bread? Further, what is so special or distinctive
about our Eucharistic bread? In those early days, the
distinctiveness would not have been seen in terms of
the real presence of Christ in the form of that broken
bread. Rather they saw it as distinctively Christian in
that it was “bread broken to be shared with others” –
‘Take and eat, this is my body which is given for’! So,
in the Lord’s prayer we are taught to pray for bread
that we will share with others, not for bread that we
ourselves will consume and thus preserve our own
lives. That is the way a true Christian prays – and
lives: not for himself but for others. For, the Christian
is Christ living today in flesh and blood. And just as
Jesus gave himself “for the life of the world,“ so the
Christian too lives that others may have the fullness of
life, even if he himself has to suffer and die.
That this is the way the petition “Give us each day
our daily bread” is to be understood can be further
confirmed by looking at the parable that Luke appends
immediately after the Lord’s Prayer. (Lk. 11:5-8) It
tells of a person going to his friend in the middle of the
night to ask for three loaves of bread, “because a friend
of mine on a journey has arrived, and I have nothing to
place before him.” If eventually the person next door
gives this man the three loaves, it is because he realizes
at last that he begs this bread not for himself but for his
friend. This then is the spirit in which we too pray for
“our espiousios bread.” The next paragraph (v. 9-13)
assures us that when we ask we do receive – but only
when we ask in this fashion viz. not for ourselves but
for others!
After each and every Eucharist we celebrate, it would
be real shame if we still turn a deaf ear or a Nelson’s eye
to the needs of our brothers and sisters aroundus. We
might end up like rich man who feasted sumptuously
“each day” (because the Lord favoured him each day
with plenty) but never shared any of it with his poor
neighbor, Lazarus. We all know the end of that story!
(Lk. 16:19-31) Is there something in my life that
needs changing so that it can be more transparently
Eucharist? The Lord says “What you do to the least
of my brothers & sisters, you do to Me.” Where do
these brothers and sisters of our exists? They are there
all around us, in our small Christian communities, in
our parishes, etc. we’ve got to be brave and open our
eyes, ears and our hearts.

ALIVE IN THE EUCHARIST
– Source & Summit of Christian living
T
he one question I often ask myself is: “How is
it possible that people and groups who call
themselves Christians and participate in a
Eucharistic celebration week after week, find little or
no improvement in their relationship with others?”
What use would it be if fifty two masses are offered
during the year if one cannot bridge the gulf between
the rich and the poor, between friends and enemies,
between siblings squabbling and ethnic groups at war?
The issue remains a serious one in the context of the
most unifying force in Christian living, the Eucharist.
The one question we must all ask ourselves today is:
What does the Eucharist really mean to me?
1.
Living the Eucharist
The Eucharist we celebrate consists largely of
symbolic language _ language that most people fail
to understand, or at least do not grasp sufficiently.
Many Catholics find the Eucharistic celebrations dry
and boring, unrelated to life and its problems. For
many it is mere ritual or an obligation they have to get
through, ‘in order not to go to hell.’ It is exactly the
same as sitting before a computer, but not knowing
its programming language; everything is a puzzle to
such people, But if they did know the secret...! When
Jesus gave us the injunction “Do this as a memorial
of me”, He was revealing the secret of true happiness,
here and hereafter. It is not the homily or the sermon
that is intended to heal and transform people during a
Eucharistic celebration. A homily is but a reflection of
the central message from the Table of the Word applied
to Christian living. It is the actual Eucharistic Prayers
which are drawn from the entire life of Jesus, which
when listened to and reflected upon have immense
power to transform people. It is imperative that
people must listen carefully to the passages of these
Eucharistic Prayers that the priests offers during the
Holy Mass and in the silence of their hearts offers them
too, slowly, contemplatively and absorbing every word
rendered to God the Most High. The faithful also owe
it to Jesus present on the altar during all Eucharistic
celebrations to be respectfully participative, not just by
lip service but by a true commitment of the heart. We
cannot be corpses at the Eucharistic banquet - we need
to be “alive”!
Tidings 12
Vol. 4-4, March 2014
The Trinitarian Aspect:
Every Eucharist is a memorial ‘To the Father’, ‘Of the
Son’ and offered ‘By the Church’ (a people led by the
Holy Spirit). When Jesus at the last supper uttered these
words; “Do this in remembrance of me” (eis ten hemen
anamnesin)”, he was asking his disciples to celebrate
the Eucharistic mystery as a memorial of Him. The
entire Eucharistic action is addressed ‘TO the Father’,
for it is the Heavenly Father who is reminded of the
saving work of the Son. The Eucharistic memorial is a
movement directed to the person of the Father, who is
simultaneously thanked for the past and entreated for
the future.
The Eucharist is a memorial ‘OF the Son”, wherein
the participating faithful led by the minister appeal
to the Father in heaven to remember the life of Jesus,
his sacrifice on the cross and his resurrection and by
virtue of what he accomplished and be merciful to the
Church.
As a memorial BY the Church, the Eucharist
remembers Jesus before the Father, petitions the
Father that he may bring to completion the unfulfilled
work of salvation. This is not because the work of
salvation by Christ is in any way incomplete, but

rather because the immeasurable fullness of his
life, death and resurrection is not yet entirely
assimilated by the pilgrim Church. The work of
salvation remains incomplete not because of Christ, but
because of the Church. Every Eucharistic celebration
gives us those special graces to carry on the work of
salvation in our every day lives. We simply cannot be
freeloaders at the Eucharistic banquet. We cannot bystand, lip sync and leave the Church with a sense of
accomplished duty. We are missionaries who pledge
to carry on the work of Christ, which does not just
involve our routine duties, but to spread the message of
the kingdom of God. We are responsible for bringing
the Gospel message of Jesus to the world and for the
salvation of others. We truly are!
Reverence of the Sacred Species:
The sacred species is but the body and blood of Christ,
transformed by the coming down of Jesus on the altar
during the epiclesis. The bread and wine no longer
retain their identity as two earthly elements, but are
the very body and blood of Jesus. When we proceed
to receive the Holy Communion, our hearts must
have made recompense for its earlier sinful actions,
our thoughts and minds must be in total surrender to
the transforming power of Christ and we must receive

Jesus, giving glory to the Father. The procession to
receive Holy Communion must be a reverential walk,
silent and solemn. It is utterly horrifying to see people
in Church chatting away during the epiclesis or worse
still after receiving Holy Communion. If there were
only to realise that they have received the greatest
programmer of their lives, one who would fix all things
for them and one who would show them the right way
in life, then they would cherish those moments after
receiving the body and blood of Christ.
Life for the World
The Holy Eucharist is also a medicine for inner healing.
The sadness and gloominess of the disciple on the way
to Emmaus was removed when Jesus revealed himself
through the Holy Eucharist. They were filled with joy
and became witnesses of Jesus. The Eucharist is also
the great source for physical healings. Many miracles
take place when the Eucharist is adored in holiness
and sanctity. These miracles need not be restricted
to an adoration of the Blessed Sacrament experience;
they can also be manifest in our daily reception of the
Eucharist at Holy Communion done with piety and
reverence.
parish is lonely, sick or even depressed, it is imperative
that we who are enriched by our reception of the body
and blood of Christ, especially those in ministry such
as SCC animators, catechists and Eucharistic ministers
must all reach out to such persons bringing cheer and
together giving praise to our Lord Jesus. Only then
would this be a true worship of the Eucharistic Lord.
The Eucharist banquet or the Holy Mass worthily
celebrated unites its participants. This is what the priest
pleads on his and our behalf at the Eucharistic Prayer
III, “Grant that we, who are nourished by His body and
blood, may be filled with His Holy Spirit, and become
one body, one spirit in Christ.” AMEN!

Convention or Conviction
There are many people who like to follow tradition. The
celebration of traditional feasts, pre-lenten carnivals
and cultural observances lead most people into a
“conventional” pattern of living. This conventional
pattern also finds form in the celebration of the Most
Holy Eucharist. The most common refrain from most
Catholics when asked where they are off to on Sunday
mornings is, “I am going to attend mass”. How honest!
There are indeed many people who actually do go to
church on Sunday “to attend mass.” It’s just like going
to work or school or college from Monday to Saturday
and then attending Holy Mass on Sunday. We have
become conventional Catholics! It is only when we
truly participate as one family, in the forgiveness of sins
(of people both present within and in the world outside),
in our act of contrition for ourselves and for others, in
the sharing of bread (both the body of Christ and the
material goods he has lavished on us) and in allowing
the power of the gospel to transform us, can we then
say that our faith in the Eucharist has been based on
Conviction, rather than on Convention. Just as sharing
a meal fosters intimacy and builds a relationship
between persons, so also must our participation at the
Eucharistic banquet be. So if any brother or sister in the

THE WONDERFUL TIME WITH JESUS
Jesus Christ is the true priest, altar and the victim at
the Eucharist. The letter to the Hebrews presents Jesus
as the High priest of the New covenant. By his death
on the cross, he has offered an acceptable sacrifice to
the Father (Heb 7, 17-20). “Since Christ’s sacrifice is
perfect, he is the only mediator and the priest celebrant
now is the visible icon of the invisible priest, Jesus
himself. It is Christ who offers the sacrifice to the Father
being the victim and in the person of the priest. The
Eucharist is incomplete without the person of Christ.
Christ does not offer each time in heaven, but we
celebrate as the Church, through the ordained minister,
the memorial and make our personal offering to that
offering that Christ made once and for all”. (Given in
SacrosanctumConcilium, The Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy)
Christ loves the Church as his bride, having been
established as the model of a man loving his wife as his
own body. The Church in turn is subject to her head.
He fills the Church, which is his body and his fullness,
with his divine gifts so that it may increase and attain
to all the fullness of God(Eph 5,25-28). Jesus Christ
offers us abundance of life in the Eucharist. One day
St. Teresa of Avila heard someone say: “If only I had
lived at the time of Jesus... If only I had seen Jesus... If
only I had talked with Jesus...” To this she responded:
“But do we not have in the Eucharist the living, true
and real Jesus present before us? Why look for more?”
If we come with a right purpose and intention and
surrender ourselves, our whole being we will truly
receive his graces, make good choices for our good and
for the good of others because God will be working in
us. Heaven is brought down to us in the Holy Eucharist,
am I able to experience it and make it my heavenly
abode to hasten and meet my Lord, Redeemer, Saviour.
Pope Francis in his first Apostolic Exhortation
“EvangeliiGaudium” (The Joy of the Gospel) states
that the Eucharist “is not a prize for the perfect but a
powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak”.
We at times are lost and find ourselves in total darkness.
we seek solutions, answers for our problems and it is
when we participate in the Mystery of the Sacrifice
of Jesus we offer it to God and God in turn listens
to us, strengthens us, incarnates in our problems and
difficulties through different means and people. Such
is the power of the Mystery if we truly experience and
understand it. Didn’t Jesus say “Come to me all who
are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest”. It
is St. Maximilian Kolbe who said “If Angels could be
jealous of men, they would be so for one reason and
that is Holy Communion”. Eucharistic Lord, each day
increase my love for you so that I may be totally yours
and your loving child.

True Treasure
EUCHARIST
As a child, I was looking for CHRIST...
I asked my parents where is HE in the CHURCH?
My mother answered me,
“In that White Bread is CHRIST.”
But, I can’t see HIM,
Tell me which other place can I find HIM?
“In the EUCHARIST”, said my dad
And what does that mean? I asked him.
He said to me, “You will find HIM if you search for
CHRIST in EUCHARIST”
So, I sat down and scribbled these
words E U C H A R I S T.....
I cut off the letters E (Envy, Evil,
Enemy..), U (Ugliness of mind, thought, words,
actions....) and A (Anger....)
and found my CHRIST in EUCHARIST.

A man was intent at pulling down an old oak: he
started opening the ground with a spade all around
it. Suddenly he struck iron. As he dug deeper a

The Eucharist and the Liturgy of the Mass is a great
treasure: deep into it you discover the message
that God gave to people: an immense love and gift

Sacred
Music in
Liturgy
M
usic is an integral part of the liturgical
celebration. Music is an instrument of
‘communion’ between man and God and
among people themselves. Singing together brings
people together as one community. An important
understanding of music in liturgy is causing havocs
in many of the Churches. Many choir group make
the liturgical celebration as an musical performance.
Only a correct understanding can solve this unhealthy
development. Here I would like to highlight some of
the dimensions of sacred music in Liturgy.
The Church has been very keen in fostering music
in Liturgy and also safeguarding its sacredness. A
cursory glance of the interventions of the Popes bears
ample proof for this fact. The first among these is a
‘Motu Proprio’ of Pope Pius X given in 1903. In this
he suggested that the hymns should be composed
and sung in such a way that the faithful are helped to
pray in a better way. Pope Pius XII was so concerned
about liturgy in the life of the Church, and he publish
an Encyclical on liturgy in 1947 (Mediator Dei). This
Encyclical warns about certain undue influence of
‘modernism’ in liturgical music. He was a proponent
of community-singing which he believed would also
enhance the community-feeling of the assembled as
members of the One-Church of Christ. Pope Pius
XIIs concern for sacred music was so deep that in
1955 he published another document on church
music (Musicae Sacrae Disciplinae). He said that the
content of hymns should help people to reach the
final goal, namely God. Therefore, the composers
are to be instructed to compose hymns accordignly.
In this document he refers also musical instruments
which should be conducive to a religious experience
of the liturgical assembly. Pope John XXIII too had a
personal interest in fostering church music.
Second Vatican Council
The Second Vatican Council’s Constitution on the
Sacred Liturgy is a landmark in the history of the
sacred music. It has devotee a whole chapter to this
theme and has laid down concrete principles to be
followed in the field of church music. Accordingly
“choirs must be diligently promoted” and “whenever
the sacred action is to be celebrated with song, the
whole body of the faithful may be able to contribute
that active participation which is rightly theirs”(SC
114).
After Second Vatican Council
Many years have been passed since the Constitution
on the Sacred Liturgy came into force. Undoubtedly,
the Constitution has given a new impetus to
liturgical singing. Consequently we have blessed
with liturgical books, psalm books for the use of the
people of God.
Pastoral reflections on Sacred Music
Music being a powerful medium of the
communication so a planned pastoral action seems
to be a must. Otherwise it can be detrimental
to the very purpose of liturgical music. The
following pastoral approaches should be taken into
Tidings 18

consideration for an effective implementation of the
directives on sacred music
7. Choir groups should avoid stuffing & suffocating
the whole mass with singing.
1. Parish liturgy team takes active interest in creating
awareness among the faithful that music is an
integral part of the liturgical celebration and that it
is not meant to fill the gap between prayers
The good things about our Choirs
2. Choir should choose hymns which can be sung by
the whole assembly of the faithful.
1. Each group takes great pains to practice
2. The members sacrifice(Etymology: SACRUM
FACERE: to make sacred). A lot: their leisure time,
their energy....
3. Make use of fixed hymns at least for a period of
time
3. Lot of enthusiasm is seen in them. They dont sing
perfunctorily but with zest.
4. Church singing is soft, melodious and leading to
God experience. Beats (on keyboard)are hurting
such experience. If you want to get convinced, listen
Vatican liturgical services.
4. By and large jealousy and envy is absent. Jealousy
is the death knoll of church singing.
5. It is consoling to see so many youth in choir
although some more boys would be wonderful.
5. Choir is just an aid to congregational singing.
Sometimes the voice of choir members is so
voluminous, that the people’s voice becomes just a
whimper!.
6. It has been observed that they have good
disposition and humility to accept correction.
6. Some time choir groups are a big distraction
to congregation: They chat, they laugh and trim
their instruments during sermon & even during
consecration.
Conclusion
The position of the Church with regard to music is
consistent and clear. It is up to us to implement the
norms laid down by the Church for a worthy and
effective participation of the faithful in liturgical
celebrations.

Cloistered Carmels
H
Fr. Ivan D’Souza, OCD
ave you been to Holy Spirit hospital, Mahakali
caves road? And just opposite we have
“AtmaDarshan” and Sacred Heart Church.
Opposite to this Church, across the road, you see high
walls with an awesome gate and an inscription on the
wall”Cloistered Carmel”. Inside are about 18 nuns.
They are called “Carmelite Contemplatives”. They are
never seen outside. Inside, they enjoy intimacy with
Christ, serene life, joyous smile and work to earn their
daily bread. Here below are a few insights into their
lives.
The Carmelite Order, throughout its long history
spanning more than 8 centuries has given to the Church
great and numerous saints: monks, missionaries and
mystics. Carmel sprang up in the Church as God’s
gift to a society that was more concerned for external
wealth, pomp and glory while the true inner worth
of human person, individually and collectively, as
image and likeness of God and His preferred dialogue
partner, was lost sight of. Human greatness was seen
in the concentration in an individual of a nation, of
brute power, economical and social, rather than the
blossoming of inner life, in response to communion
with God in prayer. Hence the Carmelite Order
embarked on the mission of giving back soul to the
society and the individual, enmeshed in worldly power
by affirming radically the Gospel values of inner worth
of human person in communion with God, and as a
sign thereof living together as community of prayer and
fraternity: elements fundamental to the N. Testament
Christian faith. The Prophet Elias on Mt. Carmel who lived always
in God’s presence, and courageously stood for social
justice and against every form of idolatry; and Mary
Mother of Jesus who kept pondering the marvels of
God’s design and surrendered herself, have been the
two fundamental inspirations of Carmelite life of
contemplation. No doubt, true to the socio-political
mentality of the time serious commitment to religious
life was reserved for men. Women were not to appear
in public life. The credit goes to Bl. John Soreth. He,
as the supreme moderator of the Carmelite Order
in 1452 broke this false monopoly and proposed for
courageous women a form of strict cloistered life
What are these
Cloistered Carmels?
of contemplation and sisterly communion, without
external apostolate. St. Teresa of Avila 1515-1582
appearing in the renaissance period prompted by the
inner voice took upon herself the task of reviving the
pristine spirit among the Carmelites: men and women.
Her ‘Tabor experience’ gave her all the strength she
required to swim as a spiritual luminary in a sea
dominated by men. She restored among the nuns
the ‘spiritual desert’ of silence, solitude, poverty and
prayer of the early Carmelite tradition. With the help
of St. John of the Cross she brought about a similar
renewal among the Carmelite friars as well. When
St. Teresa died in 1582 there were 17 monasteries of
Nuns and 15 of Friars. Down the years the Church
has recognized the eminent teaching on spiritual life
and heroic witness of Christian virtues among many
Carmelites. There are as of now, three doctors of the
Church and many a great mystic who have shown by
their life the rich spiritual wealth of the Christian faith. This spiritual revolution ignited the imagination
and faith in the western Church within a short time.
Her spiritual sons marched out of Europe in hoards,
to distant lands, not to conquer the lands along the
colonizers, but to offer the spiritual wealth of Christian
faith. If friars reached the shores of India the land of
sadhus and sages, within three decades after the death
of St. Teresa, the cloistered nuns had to wait for the
call from the Carmelite bishop to make their first
foundation in Mangalore in 1870. The first novice of
the cloistered nuns in India is a Blessed Mystic of the
Church: Bl. Mary of Jesus Crucified (Miriam Bouardy),
known better as the little Arab, a daughter of Palestine
and of the East.

to understand the implication and obligations of the
Sacrament of Confirmation. There are 2 characteristics

God personally and spend time contemplative prayer.
Secondly, an adult does not think of himself alone,
but also need to give time to the Church through
service. Soon after the Homily Bishop administered

TESTIMONIES OF GOD’S
HEALING TOUCH
Ps 20:2, 3 & 5 – The Lord answer you in the day of distress;
and give you protection. He sends you help from the
sanctuary and give you support from the mount Zion and
grant you your heart’s desire.
God is Lord of every cast and creed; He loves everyone in
the same proportion and answers their prayers who call
upon Him.
“I had written a petition for a good job for my son. By the
grace of God, my son got a good job and he has started
coming to church. My daughter also got a new job and there
is peace in her marriage life. My mother has been healed of
her leg pain which she has been suffering since 25 years. I
am also healed of pain in my hand which has been troubling
me since 4.5 years. I thank Lord Jesus Christ who showered
abundant graces and blessings on my family. I believe that
nothing is impossible for God. Only one has to believe in
His mercy. Praise God and I thank all members of Hindi
Prayer group. Alleluia.”
- Elcy D’Souza
“My husband had a very severe stomach pain. Inspite of
visiting the doctor and sonography, nothing was detected but
the pain continued. We went to the church on Wednesday,
and Br. Rajan’s wife prayed over him and gave him Holy
water to drink. By the grace of God his pain immediately
disappeared. Jesus is Lord to be praised forever.”
- Anonymous
“Jesus is glorified for what he has done in my life. In the
last two months, I was getting repeated strokes and was
admitted in Umrao Hospital. I was in the ICU for more
than two months. I was not able to walk without the help
of 4 people who would lift me up but after Br. Rajan and his
team prayed over me, I am able to walk on my own. I come
walking for prayer meeting on Monday’s by the grace of
God to give glory to Him. I thank Br. Rajan and Fr. Ivan for
praying over me. I thank and praise Our Lord Jesus Christ. “
- Francis D’Souza
“I was suffering from hoarseness in the voice for about five
months. I attended the Monday Prayer service and was
healed. The Lord touched me. He also healed me of low
Blood Pressure, fear and anxiety. He has showered many
blessings on our family. Thank and Praise you Jesus.
- Celina Almeida
“I was a very active person, doing all my house work. However
since June 2012, many problems came my way - my motherin-law passed away, my husband underwent an operation and
was on bed. Since my husband was the only earning member
in the family I had severe financial problem. Then all of sudden
I detected a lump in my chest and was diagnosed for breast
cancer. I was advised to be operated as soon as possible. The
cost of the operation was nearly Rs.1.5 lakhs. My family was
tensed and we did not know where to get such large amount
of money. On Monday I came for the prayer meeting, and the
Holy Spirit took control of my situation. Help came in the form
of my son’s friend’s mother who is on the staff at KEM hospital.
I went to the hospital, and within a week all my routine checkup was done and I was sent directly to the doctor who gave me
the date for the operation. On 27th Oct 2012, I was operated
successfully and the cost of the operation was just Rs. 5000/-.
The lump test result was stage III and I had to undergo 6 cycles
of chemotherapy at Tata Hosiptal. All through this I prayed
continuously. I can really say that there is lots of strength in
prayers because I got financial help from known and also
unknown persons. One of my neighbours provided me ½ litre
of milk for nearly one year. Jesus gave me courage to bear all
my pain and He also sent people who helped me at every stage.
Thank God with my whole heart for making me stand on my
feet to take care of my family.”
- Fatima Rodrigues
“Due to my foot being operated thrice for ulcers, I didn’t
volunteer as an usher, but attended all the 3 days of the Family
Retreat from 07 to 09 February 2014 in our Parish. On the 3rd
day of the retreat (09 Feb 2014), despite the ulcers in my foot,
I was told by the ushers to go behind and sit. I gracefully took
the back seat. I turned around to find a huge board stating
Counseling and Confession. I had a good confession and also
got counseled. Shortly thereafter, I was led into the Church and
got a seat right in front of St. Joseph’s statue. It was at this time
I felt a bolt of lightning run through my foot and I was healed,
which was confirmed by the doctor subsequently. He asked me
to come after a fortnight for a routine
check-up as I was now completely healed. Praise and Thanks
be to Jesus for this healing.”
- Stafford Pinto
“I was suffering from SIGMOID DIVERTICULITIS. I prayed
and also asked the English Prayer group to pray. The Lord
answered my prayer and a major operation was averted. Thank
you Lord Jesus.
- Sarita Vaz
