St. Mary's Home Progress Report We provide q for people with severe disabilities, so each person can ac Our new logo comes with a new tagline: “A good life.” That’s exactly what you make possible for the young people entrusted to our care to have. Here’s a look at some of the ways the children and young adults of St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House enjoy a good life. They are benefitting from many activities because of donors like you. You’re changing the lives of the young people and their families by investing in St. Mary’s Home. Thank you. uality, specialized care within a homelike environment hieve his or her fullest potential. 1 All dressed up S ometimes it’s just nice to get all dressed up and have a night on the town. Kulquinda, or KoKo for short, was the center of attention during our Auxiliary Board’s 9th annual gala and auction at the Hilton at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. KoKo is quite the artist, and she created a painting of flowers that sold during the silent auction, along with clay art pieces made by other children of St. Mary’s. The master of ceremonies, WVEC-TV reporter and anchor Joe Flanagan, returned for a second year and did another wonderful job of keeping the evening running smoothly. Thank you to the many generous supporters who made the evening a great success, and a lot of fun for KoKo! 2 Breaking bread together R achel lives at The Albero House, our home for adults with disabilities. Her parents live in northern Virginia. That distance doesn’t stop them from enjoying each other’s company during meals. Many Friday nights, you’ll find Rachel savoring her dinner while her parents chat with her via Skype. 3 Fit for a queen H annah sat on a mat in her room, surrounded by staff members who applied her makeup, curled her hair and helped her slip into a pretty dress. When they finished, they chanted, “Prom queen!” A couple hours of dancing and merriment later, Hannah found herself in the center of St. Mary’s Atrium being crowned prom queen, with John as her king. Hannah, John and 14 other teens from St. Mary’s were joined at the prom by students from Grassfield High School in Chesapeake and Lifepoint Christian Fellowship. St. Mary’s recreational therapy department has been organizing this ritual of spring for several years. 4 A big bird A bout 150,000 people — including Carrington and KoKo from St. Mary’s — visited the Chrysler Museum of Art in the spring to see a very yellow, very big bath toy. They got to see the 40foot-high “Rubber Duck” by artist Florentijn Hofman on its last day in town. What a great way to spend Memorial Day. 5 A portrait of the artist J orge, who has wanted to be an artist since he was a little boy, has had the opportunity to explore different ways of expressing himself through art therapy sessions. He’s also been working regularly with artist and volunteer Karen Ludwig to explore his interest in art. He’s even the president of St. Mary’s Art Club, which meets every Thursday. To see works by Jorge and other artists in residence at St. Mary’s, please visit the Home and check out our new art gallery. 6 Girl Scouts explore the Oceanfront A t St. Mary’s, “a good life” for the children and young adults includes being active members of the community. That’s why they take hundreds of fun field trips throughout the year. One of the biggest excursions of 2014 was a daylong trip to the Virginia Beach Oceanfront for four Girl Scouts — who made the summer “staycation” possible themselves by selling Girl Scout cookies in the spring. Aly (pictured), Kulquinda, Amelia and Ashley took part in many fun activities during the day, including a free trip to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center and posing for an old-time photo on the Boardwalk. Other local businesses and attractions, such as Rockafeller's Restaurant, Dough Boy’s California Pizza and Barclay Towers Resort Hotel, donated meals, tickets and a hotel suite to make the girls’ day extra fun. Among those involved was Teresa Diaz of the Virginia Beach Convention & Visitors Bureau, who spread the word about the trip and volunteered to help stretch the girls’ funds. The Scouts presented Teresa with a framed piece of artwork, created by a child at the Home. Watch a video with highlights from the trip: http://bit.ly/smhgirlscouts 7 Fore! S alim was among several kids who tried their hands at putting on a practice green with pointers from a real pro: golfer Marc Leishman, who visited St. Mary’s in August, just days after playing in the PGA Championship. Marc toured St. Mary’s with his wife, Audrey, and their friends, Jessica A. Hayes of Hook Law Center, who also is a member of St. Mary’s Planned Giving Advisory Committee, and Sheri Mantoni, a support coordinator at St. Mary’s. During the visit, Jorge, who also lives at the Home, presented Marc with a framed piece of artwork created by a child at St. Mary’s, and even showed Marc some of his own artwork. Thank you to Marc for donating $10,000 to St. Mary’s through The Presidents Cup. 8 Back to school, back to fun A fter an active summer, Aby and other kids had a busy — and fun — first week of school right after Labor Day. St. Mary’s makes sure that every child, no matter how medically fragile, attends school, either at the Home or at public schools in Norfolk or Virginia Beach. Many families choose to have their children stay at St. Mary’s, which partners with Southeastern Cooperative Educational Programs, a regional public school serving Hampton Roads, to provide specialized instruction in eight classrooms at the Home. 9 A fall fete Z ach and other kids, families, staff, board members, friends and members of the community came together for our Fall Festival to enjoy a day of face painting, crafts, a petting zoo and more. Many staff and volunteers put a lot of work into preparation to make the festival a success, including painting 128 wooden pumpkins that kids decorated during the festival. 10 Happy holidays C olton usually goes home for the holidays, but his mom said that for Christmas 2014, he wanted to stay at St Mary’s. Colton, his parents, other children and families, staff and volunteers gathered on Christmas Day in St. Mary’s Atrium to open gifts and celebrate the holiday together. This sweet photo of Colton and his father appeared on the front page of the local newspaper the next day. Tadros, M.D. Long Term Care of Virginia The Albero House Medical Director Thank you for helping children and young adults enjoy a good life Ask 100 people to define a “good life” and we suspect you would get 100 different answers. The same would certainly be true for the nearly 100 people who live at St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House. As individual as these responses would be, there would be some common threads, too. They might arise from the “person-centered” foundation that contributes to a good life for the boys and girls and men and women who call St. Mary’s and The Albero House home. The person-centered approach boils down essentially to “nothing about me without me.” Each person who lives at St. Mary’s Home or The Albero House fully participates in decisions regarding his or her care, education, activities of daily living and community involvement. Eliciting this participation can be complex, but the effort is worthwhile to see the progress that is made – be it clinically, or in the classroom, or as our residents integrate themselves more fully into the community. In simple terms, as folks maintain their health (or achieve improved health), do well in their studies and enjoy time with family and friends, they are building the basis for a general definition of a “good life.” Meeting the needs and expectations of the nearly 100 individuals who live at St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House is challenging work that we carry out 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Your support of our efforts is most appreciated, and your continued support is very important going forward. While we remain focused on our efforts in Norfolk, St. Mary’s Home will increasingly explore opportunities to be of service to more people throughout the Commonwealth of Virginia. In this way, the St. Mary’s level of care and caring can be extended to more people who choose St. Mary’s as their best option for achieving a “good life.” Having said that, no matter what other ventures St. Mary’s might engage in, we have a firm commitment to ensuring that the care and caring at our “home base” will continue to be high quality and always responsive to the needs of our residents and others who will seek our care in the future. Thank you for your support. It is because of you that we have an unrivaled place here at St. Mary’s – both in terms of our physical plant and, more importantly, our vibrant and very able staff (300 strong) who work hard every day to help our children and adults achieve their good life on their terms in our atmosphere of care and compassion and expertise. Thank you for making all this possible. Nancy Wilcox President St. Mary's Home Board of Directors William C. But the heart of our mission stayed the same: To provide quality, specialized care within a homelike environment for children and adults with severe disabilities, so each person can achieve his or her fullest potential. The private, nonprofit St. Mary’s Home has always been a place filled with love, friends, activities and extraordinary care. For more than 70 years, we’ve provided a true home, evolving to offer medical, therapeutic, educational and recreational services for people with disabilities, from newborns to adults, in an atmosphere of warmth, nursing and personal attention. This level of complex, around-theclock care can be difficult for families to provide at their own homes. We serve families from throughout Virginia, and we’re pleased to serve military families while they are stationed in Virginia. Costs are covered by Medicaid, United Way and charitable contributions by donors like you. To reflect who we are today and symbolize our dynamic future, we’ve developed a joyful new logo, which we’re proud to share with you here. The figures reaching toward one another, guiding and supporting each other, represent the children and young adults who live here, staff, families and you, friends of St. Mary’s. If you look closely, you might even see that the figures together form the letter “M,” for “Mary.” Perhaps more importantly, the new logo comes with a new tagline: “A good life.” That is exactly what you help make possible for the young people entrusted to our care. We can’t thank you enough. To learn more about admissions or our services, schedule a tour or request our new informational brochure, contact Melanie Pérez-López, director of social work, at (757) 622-2208 ext. 321 or [email protected]. Sister Mary June had spent more than 50 years working, and then volunteering, at St. Mary’s. Two of the Daughters — Sister Grace Malonzo, second from left, and Sister Margaret McCabe, far right — visited St. Mary's to present their collected donations. 18 T he Junior League of Norfolk-Virginia Beach, Inc. named St. Mary’s Community Partner of the Year. St. Mary’s is grateful for this and our many other partnerships in Hampton Roads and beyond. he Auxiliary Board’s 9th annual gala and auction, which raises funds to support the children and young adults of St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House, culminated with a drawing for a silver 2014 Jetta, generously donated by Checkered Flag Volkswagen & Hyundai. Congratulations to the lucky ticket holder, Sally Hartman, vice president of the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, which happens to be a longtime supporter of St. Mary’s! Save the date for the 2016 gala, on April 16 at the Half Moone Cruise and Celebration Center in Norfolk. F ine art photographer Jackie Camire donated a collection of her nature photographs for hanging in The Albero House, our home for adults with disabilities. Here's Jackie, left, with some of the beach scenes among her donated works. At right is Pat Yeiser; both women are members of the Peace and Justice Committee at Blessed Sacrament Church in Norfolk. P ayten was among the kids who met Elsie Harris, who was named a Volunteer of the Year by Dominion Virginia Power and designated St. Mary’s for the second time to receive a donation from the power company. Elsie, left, is a longtime supporter of St. Mary’s, and her granddaughter, Paige Beavers, right, is an LPN at the Home. I F T rent and other children and young adults got checkups from dental hygiene students from Old Dominion University who visited St. Mary’s Home. amilies, guardians, staff and members of the public heard from experts on topics relating to children with disabilities as the free “Friday Forums” lecture series at St. Mary’s continued, with the generous support of Children’s Specialty Group and The Camp Family Foundations. Thank you to our three speakers in 2014: Dr. Michael Strunc, M.D., pediatric sleep medicine specialist at Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters; Lynn Earle, MPH, RDN, who provides all aspects of clinical nutritional services for children and young adults at St. Mary’s Home and The Albero House; and Terry A. It sometimes requires extraordinary patience, effort and skill. But in a place filled with love and laughter, where victories are often hard-fought but deeply rewarding, it’s worth it. And every inch of progress is unforgettable. How will you be remembered? We invite you to link your legacy with ours through a planned gift. After all, love is forever. Leslie Paul and her husband, Bill Seib, are planning for the future of St. Mary’s Home with gifts in their wills to provide a range of activities for the children. In the family portrait at left, Carrington gets a big hug from her mom during one of their frequent visits. Children like Carrington will be assured of quality care and plenty of fun thanks to people like Leslie and Bill, who were inspired by seeing “how happy they (the children) are doing activities.” Will you join with Leslie and Bill in making sure Carrington and other children will always have a safe, healthy and happy place?
