Dear Friends, As the purpose of an Annual Report is to share with you the statistics on our client services, as well as our financial position, we also like to take the opportunity to share with you stories of people whose impact is felt in every part of our organization. We are lucky to have dedicated volunteers, donors and employees, and share just a few of those stories with you here, but realize there are stories like these that happen every day. There are always heroes that touch an organization like ours – the many people who work with clients, those who volunteer their time and money, and those who have dedicated themselves and walk alongside us as we all work toward improving the mental healthcare of our clients. The past year has been one of transition – as we are saying goodbye to our longtime leader, Carl Pendleton, we have also merged with Harbor Family Services to expand our services in the midcoast region. Though we have entered a new stage of leadership, what has always worked for Sweetser, and will continue to be our driving force, is the unyielding commitment to providing exceptional care to Maine’s most vulnerable populations. In our roles as President & CEO and Board Chair, we know that nothing happens without the strategic focus of our Board of Directors, our corporators, our dedicated employees, and our volunteers to achieve it. For over 185 years, we have endeavored to provide appropriate care in the most humanizing ways possible. Now, more than ever, mental health is a conversation that is happening throughout our country and we all have the opportunity to reduce the stigma around mental health services. Know that the work taking place every day at Sweetser is work that we can all be truly proud of. Every year at Sweetser is different – programs and services may change, people may change, but the commitment we share to our mission remains steadfast. Thank you for your continued support while we continue in that vein! Sincerely, Debra D. TaylorJohn S. Beliveau President & CEOChair, Board of Directors 3 DONOR PROFILE Pizza By Alex - 53 Years of Giving Joy “It feels good to see smiles on their faces.” Alex Mantis, the original owner of Pizza By Alex, started donating pizza parties for Sweetser children back in 1961. A friend of his had two children who were helped by Sweetser and Alex wanted to show his appreciation by giving something back to Sweetser. His nephew Andy took over the family business in 1985, and continued the tradition, even after Alex’s passing in 2007. Every holiday season, the children living on Sweetser’s Saco campus look forward to visiting this well-established restaurant located in the heart of Biddeford. When it comes to pizza, Pizza By Alex is the campus favorite. “This is a special treat for our kids,” says Sweetser Residential Director, Gail Howlett-Brown. “We look forward to our Pizza Party all year long and it’s a great way to start the holidays.” Andy Mantis personally serves the children when they visit. “It makes me feel good to see smiles on their faces,” says Andy. “For one night, the kids can just be themselves and enjoy a pizza. The holidays must be a difficult time for these kids and we are happy to make the days a little more pleasant for them.” The Mantis family has provided more than just pizza to Sweetser over the years. Upon his death in 2007, Alex Mantis bequeathed $475,000 to support Sweetser programs. Andy Mantis has been a loyal and generous financial supporter as well. We are grateful to Andy and the Mantis family for their generosity for more than 53 consecutive years. They continue to enrich many lives and make a difference not only to Sweetser, but to numerous charitable organizations. Pizza By Alex owner Andy Mantis (far right), with his sister, Florence Harrison, and nephew, Alan Joy. 4 EMPLOYEE PROFILE Carl Pendleton “I have followed my family roots in helping others, and it has been a wonderful journey!” As President and CEO of Sweetser since 1991, Carl Pendleton has led this organization to become one of the largest and well respected mental health agencies in the State of Maine. The vision of helping people to create promising futures has always been first and foremost in his heart and mind, and has never faltered, regardless of the many obstacles encountered. Under Carl’s leadership, Sweetser grew from a small group of dedicated employees, to now more than 700. In addition, Sweetser provides a continuum of services in countless cities, in every county in Maine, and continues to respond to the many needs that face children, families and adults in Maine today. Carl’s Sweetser career began in 1978, when he arrived at 50 Moody Street to work as a “Duty Man” living on grounds and being responsible for the children living in the Residential Program. He fulfilled this role while also working as a high school teacher at our Campus School. In 1981, Carl started the first Sweetser Day Treatment Program in Maine and the results were very well received. Shortly thereafter he was promoted to Director of Education where a tremendous career helping students with special needs ensued. Another promotion in 1983 made him the Program Director of both Education and Residential services. His leadership skills helped Sweetser to grow and prosper in many ways. Finally, in 1991 he was chosen to be the Executive Director, currently known as President and CEO. During his decades of service, Carl has served on many committees both statewide and nationally, and has received much recognition for his strong leadership skills. He has served on the Child Welfare League of America Board of Directors, and also as Chair of the New England Executives. In addition, he was selected as a leader in the National Council of Accreditation and has been assigned to numerous National and State Blue Ribbon Commissions. Carl is married to Barbara Liepmann, is the father of Carl II, Corey, Stuart and Janna, and the granddad of CJ, Brady, Cameron, and Catherine. Carl has been an inspiration to us all and we appreciate his hard work and lifetime of dedication to the well-being of those in need! Katie McCafferty enjoys Cycle for Sweetser with her son, Evan, and daughter, Kylie. US Olympian Julia Clukey visits The School at Sweetser in Saco and gives students a demonstration of her luge. Angie Anders picks some tomatoes from The Ricker Farm. Long-time Sweetser supporters Dr. Irving and Kathy Meeker with Barb Pendleton. Educational Director Stacey Scott with The Veayo Twins - musicians who tour schools playing original songs about their experiences with being bullied. Lil Laverierre enjoys the various fowl on The Ricker Farm. A beautiful painting from the Cabin Fever Art Show, which is held annually, and showcases artwork from peers. 6 VOLUNTEER PROFILE Cassie Moon “To know that this simple act of giving makes a big difference is good for one's soul.” and learned that, most of all, they needed toiletries and small items - perfect for a Christmas stocking! Cassie and her elves - mostly friends and family start making the stockings and organizing materials on December 26 of each year. The stockings are handmade and filled with different items each year, but she always makes sure to include toiletries and sundries; additional items that were given this year included playing cards, silly putty, socks, candy, calculators, and items to doodle with. Cassie Moon started making Sweetser Christmas Stockings in 2009. She had previously donated to Sweetser for many years - her son's toys and clothes, through a giving tree at her local credit union - and wanted to do something more. Cassie has always enjoyed volunteering and doing projects that help children - she also makes blankets for Project Linus. Cassie had treasured memories of opening all the items in her stocking on Christmas morning, and wondered if there might be a way she could help make the holidays brighter for Sweetser children. Cassie reached out to Sweetser's development office to ask if the residential children needed anything, Cassie's mother-in-law helps organize all of the items they receive and keeps a running tally of what is needed so that every stocking includes the same items. Cassie's son also got involved last year - helping set up a Facebook page for "Sweetser Christmas Stockings." The social media aspect has helped the project grow tremendously. Cassie has always enjoyed giving in ways that are meaningful and says, "No matter what you're going through, the simple act of giving back is good for your heart. Everything has value and the simplest things can sometimes make the biggest difference." Generous Gifts Make Impact on Sweetser Programs Your Gift Matters CLIENTS SERVED BY PROGRAM (Clients may receive services from multiple programs) A $50,000 donation from Portland attorney, Dan Lilley and his wife Annette, helped keep Sweetser’s Learning and Recovery Center in Brunswick operating for another year. The Lilleys made this generous gift in memory of their son, David. Todd E. Henry, Director of Development Another significant gift from the estate of Carol Curland helped kick off a campaign to renovate and upgrade the Sweetser School kitchen in Saco and build a cafeteria for students to enjoy their meals outside of the classroom. Several foundations and corporations contributed to this project including, the Hoehl Family Foundation, Kennebunk Savings Bank Foundation, Sam L. Cohen Foundation, The Eunice Frye Home Foundation, Harmon Foundation, Morton-Kelly Charitable Trust, WingBenjamin Trust, Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust, and the Simmons Foundation. Thanks to public support, including several corporate sponsors and naming sponsorships from KeyBank and Prime Motor Group, Sweetser’s popular auction and golf fundraising events raised approximately $150,000 to assist Sweetser’s statewide programs. We are fortunate to have so many generous supporters who truly believe in our mission. Sweetser received more than $1.3 million from friends, foundations and corporations in the past fiscal year. Daniel and Annette Lilley stepped forward with a $50,000 donation to keep Sweetser's Learning & Recovery Center in Brunswick open. As a result of this support, Sweetser is helping more children, adults and families, than ever before. Thank you for making this possible.
