Kindergarten teacher to study fairy trails in Europe

Lesley Grellner, kindergarten teacher at Gilmour Elementary School will travel
to France and Germany in July
to study fairy tales.
The $5,000 grant is part of
the 2013 Global Teacher Fellowship Program awarded by
the Rural School and Community Trust. Any K-12
teacher working full-time and
teaching at least 60 percent
time in a rural community is
eligible for the fellowship.
Grellner wrote the grant
and was one 25 recipients
nationwide to receive it. She
was the only teacher from
Oklahoma to receive the
grant.
Grellner has taught kindergarten at Gilmour Elementary
School for two years. She
picked fairy tales as the topic
she wants to study abroad. In

Spa-boutique brings
unique flair downtown

One highlight of a stroll
through Kingfisher’s downtown area is a stop at Angelita
& Company, Salon & SpaBoutique referred to as
“Kingfisher’s Best Kept Secret.”
Angelita is Angelita
Ridenour while the “& Company” refers to her sister and
business partner, Belinda
Armstrong.

Ridenour’s Kingfisher
story began 14 years ago. She
was looking for a good, safe
community to raise her children. The school system also
attracted her to the area.
She had heard that the
Kingfisher community had a
good support system and decided it was time to make the
move from Oklahoma City.
Prior to moving to Kingfisher, Ridenour had been a
flight attendant for 10 years
based out of New York City,
then Chicago and lastly Dallas. She ended up in Oklahoma City as manager of
Beauty Brands.
While being a flight attendant, Ridenour started looking at other things she could
do that would keep her from
traveling so much. She started
cosmetology and nail school
and later graduated from Central State Beauty Academy in
Oklahoma City.
“One job experience led to
another, but my past employment has played a big role in
owning my own business. I
had always passed by the corner building at 224 N. Main
and noticed it was for rent. I
thought it would be a good
location for something,”
Ridenour said.
Dennis Mueggenborg
owns the building and
showed it to her. A month
later he showed it to her again.
She took a leap of faith, financing was obtained and she
opened her doors in September 2010.
With the help of Norman
Harrison, the late Terry Stapp
and family members,
Ridenour has designed a store
that is immediately relaxing.
The counter is the original
fountain from Robert’s Jewelry and Drug Store.
“I knew I couldn’t do it by
myself so I talked to my sister
Belinda Armstrong who became my business partner,”
Ridenour said.
Armstrong also works as
an IT procurement specialist
for Loves Corporation. Along
with co-owner, she takes care
of IT and advertising at the
store.
“We have a booth at the
Enid Home Builder Associa-
tion Home Show this Friday
through Sunday, April 26-28
at the Chisholm Trail Expo
Center. We invite everyone
to stop by and check out our
selection,” she said.
What Ridenour thought
would be a store with her and
one other hairstylist has
turned into a boutique with
five employees, and a salon
and spa with four stylists and
two massage therapists.
A boutique is in the front
of the store featuring a little
bit of everything.
“Our items are trendy and
casual, yet fashions that will
surpass the test of time,”
Ridenour said.
The salon and spa offers
VersaSpa self-tanning. Salon
and spa appointments can be
booked
online
at
angelitasalonspa.com.
Ridenour also sells
makeup and skin care and will
be private labeling it within
the next few years calling it
“Angel Pro Cosmetics.”
“The strength of our store
lies in our extremely supportive staff,” Ridenour said.
Her employees include
long-time Kingfisher stylist
Carol Castonguay, hairstylist
Sandy Cagle, and nail and hair
stylist Beth Allen.
Jaque Dean specializes in
skin care and massage, while
Polly Hubbard does raindrop
techniques (essential oil massage).
Angelita’s is a 15-year color
specialist and also does hair
straightening systems, nails
and microdermabrasions.
Boutique employees include Mona Ramirez, Houston Payne, Marty Simpson,
Kylie Schiska, Stephanie
Espolt and Sherri Gassen.
“I attribute my work ethic
to my parents. My late father,
Louis Zacarias, who I worked
with at age 11. My mother
who in turn helped me run
the store when we first
opened.
“I also give much thanks
to my wonderful husband
Travis Ridenour who has been
ever so patient and loving. I
could not have done it without him,” Ridenour said.
The Ridenours have four
children. Heather Ray, 23, attends Chisholm Trail Technology Center, studying to
become an administrative assistant.
Blake Ray, 22, works for
Erick Flowback Services and
was just promoted to sergeant
in the Army National Guard.
He will be deployed to Afghanistan in September.
Maverick Louis, 11, and
Xavier Cruz, 9, both attend
Kingfisher Heritage School
and are very active in league
and tournament baseball.

Kayla Crawford of
Kingfisher continued a
championship cheerleading
tradition
started at Kingfisher
High School as part of
the Oklahoma City
University which recently won two national championships.
Crawford,
the
daughter of John
Crawford and Gina
Crawford, contributed
to three state championships as a member of
the KHS cheer squad.
Then at the University of Central Oklahoma, she was on two
national champ teams.
Now at nursing school at
OCU, she traveled to Daytona
Beach, Fla., with the OCU
squad earlier this month to win
national titles in the Cheer Division 2 large coed category
the grant, she explained how
she would share her studies
and travels with her students
and community. The learning experience is place-based
and self-designed.
I’m looking at doing a blog
or using FaceBook while traveling so my students and others
can follow my travels, she said.
Following her experience,
Grellner will meet the other
grant recipients in North
Carolina where they will put
together a YouTube presentation to share with other
teachers.

The Kingfisher FFA members who received first or second Place at PI, competed on
Tuesday, April 23, in Enid at
the Northwest District competition.
In the eighth grade agricultural explorations, Taylor
Chapman placed fourth and
Anna Crosswhite received
first.
In the ninth grade FFA opportunities, Colton Smith
placed third and Sydnee
Gerken received first. Sydnee
Gerken placed second and
Brayden Foley was awarded
first place in the FFA Creed.
In the eighth-ninth-10th division, Brayden Foley placed
second and Sarah Gruntmeir
received first place. In the
natural resources division,
Caitlyn Minton placed fourth
and Katie Lippoldt received
first.
Blair Kloeppel was
awarded second place in the
plant science division. In the
agricultural business division,
Brooke Cameron placed third
and Maegan Yost received
first place. Jaryn Frey placed
first in animal science.

Keely Riddle
Kingfisher student
selected finalist
Keely Riddle, 10, a fourth
grade student at Kingfisher
Heritage School, has been selected as a state finalist in the
National American Miss Oklahoma Pageant to be held June
8 and 9, at the Southern Hills
Marriott in Tulsa.
She is the daughter of
Michelle Brown of Kingfisher.
Her activities include basketball and softball.
The pageant is for girls ages
4-18, and has five different age
divisions. Riddle will participate in the pre-teen age division.
The winner will receive a
cash award, official crown and
banner, a bouquet of roses,
and air transportation to compete in the National Pageant
in California.

met at 7 p.m. Monday, April
22, at the Cashion Christian
Church Fellowship Hall.
Tommy Eaton, president,

of the 2013 spring student of
the semester.

mother, Theresa Arms.

Eaton explained that the
Cashion Lions Club, with the
cooperation of the Cashion
High School faculty, would
like to present them with a
certificate for being the Outstanding Senior Students.
The selection was based not
only on academic standing,
but more on interaction with
the student body and faculty,
extracurricular activities and
the demonstration of leadership skills in the classroom
and school.
Bud Grabow, senior vice
president of Community State
Bank, advised that with the
award, the bank officers and
staff would like to present each
of them with a check for $25,
in appreciation for all of their
hard work and effort.
Guest speaker was Ryan
Schenk, Cashion Elementary
School principal.
He thanked the Lions club
and the community of
Cashion for its support of the
school and all of the schools
activities. He stated that every time the school had a need
and he reached out, the people
of Cashion were always there
with a positive response.
He explained that the
school playground surface
and the equipment were in
need of repair or replacement.
The teachers went into action
at the beginning of the year to
raise the funds for the renovations for the school playground.
Again, he was amazed at
the communities response
with donations and support.
He advised that there has been
two successful fundraisers so
far in the campaign, the
Chicken Plop, which was done
with matching funds from
Modern Woodmen, with
Mary Sowards being the local
representative, raising nearly
$7,000, and the 5K with the
Kats on the Prowl raising
nearly $19,000.
