He was the second of six children. The family moved to a farm northwest of Emmett, NE when Erv was a small child. He attended elementary school in Emmett, and graduated from the O’Neill High School. Erv attended Milford Trade School, learning Auto Body Repair. He has worked at a Service Station in Rawlins, WY, and as a mechanic in Casper, WY, where the owner did a “White Glove” inspection daily. After moving back to Cozad, NE he worked at F&S Sausage Company, R&R Service Station, and Monroe Auto Equipment Company, where he became the Plant Chemist. Erv married Vera Stuart in 1946 in the Methodist Parsonage in Atkinson, NE. This union was blessed with six children, Wynona, Merna, Torrey, Neil, Dru Ann, and Buf. Sadly Dru Ann died very soon after birth. Erv and Vera celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in June, 1996 just one week before Vera’s death. In 2000, Erv married Doris Poesnecker in Doniphan, NE. He became the stepfather to her nine children. Doris died in February 2014. Over the years, Ervin has been very involved in the Cozad community. He has served as a Sunday School Teacher at the Cozad United Methodist Church, as well as been a part of the United Methodist Men’s group. He was baseball coach for many years, and at one time, built a baseball pitching machine for people to practice batting. He has also helped the United Methodist Women with the Thrift Shop and Quilt shows. He has been very active in Habitat for Humanities, working on every Habitat home built in Dawson County. He also served as coordinator for the Cozad Food Pantry for 20 years. He was an active leader with the boy scouts for 45 years advocating for youth with disabilities. Junior “Erv” Kloppenborg (Cont. from pg 1.) Erv has received several awards for some of his community activities. Among the awards he has received are the Sunshine Award from 10/11 News in 2006, Cozad Citizen of the Year in 2006, and Community Service Award in 2001. For relaxation, Erv could be found doing building projects, remodeling homes, gardening, fishing, hunting, or participating in or attending activities with his children, step-children, and grandchildren. He has instilled wonderful hunting values in his children and grandchildren. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the US and European countries. His creativity was demonstrated through doing some interesting things, like having an upside-down Christmas tree one year, and another year the Christmas tree was through the roof of the porch on the house, or building giant snowmen. Ervin moved to Park Avenue Estates in Lexington in April of 2015, and then to Elwood Care Center in December 2015, for rehabilitation after fracturing his hip. Occupational therapy is a client-centered practice that places emphasis on the progress towards the client's goals. Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client/family in order to increase participation in and performance of daily activities, particularly those that are meaningful to the client. CONTINENCE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM AT THE ELWOOD CARE CENTER FROM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE ON AGING: (https://www.nia.nih.gov/health/publication/urinary-incontinence) Sarah loves to spend time with her friends talking about her grandchildren and going to exercise classes with neighbors. But she’s started to have a problem that keeps her from getting out. It’s embarrassing, but lately Sarah hasn’t been able to get to the bathroom before she wets her pants. She doesn’t know what’s happening, but the problem is keeping Sarah at home. Sarah may have a problem with bladder control called urinary incontinence (the accidental leakage of urine). While it may happen to anyone, urinary incontinence is more common in older people. Women are more likely than men to be incontinent. If this problem is happening to you, there is help. Incontinence can often be cured or controlled. Talk to your healthcare provider about what you can do. CAUSES OF INCONTINENCE: Incontinence can happen for many reasons. For example, urinary tract infections, vaginal infection or irritation, constipation, and some medicines can cause bladder control problems that last a short time. When incontinence lasts longer, it may be due to: Weak trunk and core muscles Weak bladder muscles Overactive bladder muscles Damage to nerves that control the bladder from diseases such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson’s disease Blockage from an enlarged prostate in men Diseases such as arthritis that may make it difficult to get to the bathroom in time (continued on next page) April Years of Service Heidi Button-5 Years Diane Koch-3 Years LaVonne Tiede-3 Years Jessica West-1 year Karen Schneider-1 year March 2016 www.elwoodcarecenter.com Excellence in Care & Compassion Elwood Care Center & Assisted Living Physical Therapy out-patient works the Nu-Step Machine. Serving our Community for over 40 Years Excellence in Care & Compassion CONTINENCE IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM AT THE ELWOOD CARE CENTER: A therapist noticed that almost every one of her patients who was incontinent also had weak abdominal and core muscles. Working with her Accelerated Care Plus (ACP) Clinical Program Consultant they decided to utilize the ACP Patterned Electric Neuro‐Stimulation (PENS) protocol for abdominal and core strengthening followed by targeted abdominal and core exercises for the first 30 days. This made good clinical sense and it is also in line with Medicare which requires a 30 day trial of exercise prior to covering electrical stimulation specifically for urinary incontinence. Then the patient is reassessed at 30 days and if the patient shows significant clinical gain then there is no need to progress to the Continence specific electrical stimulation protocol. Barb Anderson, Occupational Therapist Therapy services are based on your needs and as ordered by your physician – available 5 days a week We are proud of our experienced and highly trained therapists. Each has specialty areas encompassing treating infants to seniors, sports injuries to hip replacements, strokes to swallowing difficulties. It has been found in clinical practice that many of the patients who participate in the program have great results solely utilizing the core Patterned Electrical Neuro‐Stimulation (PENS) with targeted core strengthening exercises. At the Elwood Care Center we have had success with this this approach. An example of such a success is an outpatient named “QT” (not her real initials). QT, working with Barb, the Occupational Therapist from Key Rehab, started the continence improvement program in June 2015. QT commented that she was afraid to leave home due to this ongoing issue. She has a 9 year history of incontinence. By October 2015 QT had reached a level of 1‐2 pads during the day and 0‐ 1 at night after the program whereas before, she was using 12‐15 pads during the day and 4‐5 at night. The Elwood Care Center has a thriving outpatient program that has been serving the surrounding community for many years. If you or someone you know is struggling with urinary continence give us a call and we can discuss the next step. We provide Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy for a wide range of conditions.
