THE “VOLUPTUOUSNESS OF TUSCANY”
drew author Frances Mayes to the ancient Italian region
where she purchased and began renovating her now
beloved home, Bramasole. And it was Mayes’s joy,
celebration, and knowledge of all things Tuscan that drew
Drexel Heritage® to her for its Heritage collection,
Frances Mayes At Home in Tuscany.
Welcome to Tuscany. Welcome home.
In Tuscany, when you paint or stain,
you give a “mano di vernice,”
not a coat but a “hand” of varnish. I’ve always liked that expression
because it strongly reflects my sense of everyday Tuscan life. We bought
our house, Bramasole, with a handshake, not a contract. In Tuscany the

BEDROOM
The romance of a house centers on beds. In Tuscany,
when a couple marries, the purchase of the

matrimoniale, the large bed meant to last a lifetime,
is the most important and pressing choice for the
new home. The Florentine Ring Bed was inspired
by all the brides in Florence. In June you see them
everywhere, being photographed, wilting in the heat.
I’m sure their waiting bedroom is a cool respite,
carefully made up with creamy sheets and pillows.
The ancient art of ferro battuto, beaten iron, was
much practiced on beds. The curlier the better.
