Starkbierfest!
(Strong Beer Fest!)
Sunday, February 22nd!
Noon – 6 pm THIS SUNDAY!
As part of our Sunday dinners being planned over the
next few months, we’d like to make each dinner a mini-
festival. What better way to survive Winter in Peoria than by attending a
German fest!
Starkbierfests are a Munich tradition held for three weeks every year beginning in late
February. Beer halls and breweries host their own Starkbierfests across the city. It’s
a fabulous event where you have the supreme privilege of downing fresh, delicious
brew that tastes like it was especially concocted just for you to drink on that specific
day.
http://www.destination-munich.com/munich-strong-beerfestival.html
http://www.thecircumference.org/munich-strong-beer-festival
As part of the Starkbierfest we will be serving a buffet
featuring:
Schnitzel, Brats, Roast Pork (Schweinbraten), ChickenCordon Blue,
Spaetzle, Mashed Potatoes & Gravy, German Potato Salad,
Red Cabbage and Green Beans
Dinner $12 - Dessert $2
We would like to encourage you to wear your trachten to the fest!!
Below is the listing of the beers to be served at the Starkbier Fest.
Spaten Optimator
This beer is highly rated by the folks at Beer Advocate and by Rate
Beer. One of the highest rated beer we’ve ever served at the
Lindenhof!
Pours a nice brown beer with a thick, clinging off-white cream/foam lace.
Malty/herbal aroma. Surprisingly light-ish, but also malty sweet and milky
with buttery caramel, day old coffee and bitter dark chocolate malt flavours.
Faint roasted flavours. Toasty notes all over. Raisin flavours become
pronounced as the beer warms. Notes of metallic around the edges. Sharp
carbonation on the tongue followed by a light herbal hop presence that
blends nicely with a not so subtle alcohol spicy character. Hops leave a slightly leafy and oily slick feel on the
palate, peaking at the finish, which is dry.
Notes: Ahhh ... a meal in a bottle. Breakfast anyone? If beer is measured by its malt back bone than this is a
body builder beer.
Church Street Pontificator
Doppelbock
A dark-ruby colored treat that is a fine winter-warmer. Double decoction
and a heap of Weyermann Caramunich malt make for a caramel rich
beverage with subtle fruity notes of prune and grape. This Doppelbock
is a full-bodied beer that goes down warm even in the cold, and can be
enjoyed all winter long!
Pours a clear midnight sienna topped by a finger or so of khaki foam. The
nose comprises rich caramel, mild pumpernickel, light barley, a hint of cocoa powder, and a distinct vein of
green apple. The taste brings in more of the same, along with some light dark fruits (mostly fig) and a
stronger green apple character. The body is a lithe medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a mostly
smooth feel.
Abita’s Mardi Gras Bock
This Bock is similar to a German Maibock in its
high malt content, full body and slightly higher
alcohol content. Abita Bock is a very popular
brew, especially during our Mardi Gras season.
The Alstrom Brothers rate it as being very good. I
had one the other day at the new Po’ Boys on
Frostwood Parkway and found it to be very
drinkable.
Anchor Bock Beer
Pours deep velvet coffee black with a full, tan creamy froth. Aroma
is infused with cocoa and coffee. Full nectar w/ residual effers.
Flavors are dry with fruity cocoa puffs, rich coffee, a slight
leathering, and sour dough bread w/ a nice bittering on the finish.
Well ballanced. Drinks well cool. This stuff is awsome. Highly
recommended.
Franziskaner Heffe-Weisse Dunkel
Even though this is not a bock beer, we will be featuring this beer at
our fest. This beer was very popular at the Oktoberfest a couple of
years ago and is a good introduction to those of you who want to try a
bit more flavorful and heavier weisse beer than you typically drink
locally.
Smells yeasty and nutty, neither characteristic overwhelming the the
other. Yeast is like fresh baked rolls, nuttiness is mild and mellow.
Yeast and malts up front when you finally take a taste, also somewhat
grassy, nutty, with a slightly sweet background. Seriously thirstquenching, slightly dry. Totally satisfying mouthfeel, quite velvety...if
it weren't so tasty I'd keep it in the mouth and on the tongue a lot
longer.
It's on the heavier scale, though for a German dark it's not imposing.
Leinenkugel’s Big Butte Doppelbock on Draft!
Aroma is wet river rock, roasty, earthy, cocoa, toasted
marshmallow. Pours dark brown but looks ruby red in the
light; collapsing beige head. Taste is sweet and savory,
roasty, chocolate. A little thin, medium body, creamy
mouthfeel.
Only 5.8% alcohol so more of a bock than a Doppelbock.
I found it easy to drink, but not typical of other bocks I’ve
had.

Fasching Ball (Mardi Gras Party)
Mardi Gras news from Trudy Smith:
I want to thank everyone who came to the Masken Ball(it was a new record),
especially all the friends who helped make it happen. Thanks to everyone who brought the
wonderful food, it was fit for a king.
The bar crew: My hubby Al Smith, Brian Greenslate, and Bobby Franken. Decorating and
cleanup: Michelle Greenslate, Melissa Kich, Juli Brown, Glenda Franken, Eric Franken and Mary
Dempster. A very special thanks to Jeff Pulfer for all the advertising and some decorations.
Having so much help made a huge difference and it was very much appreciated.
Thank you, Dankeschoen!
I hope to see y’all and more members at the next Masken Ball which will be held on the 13th of
February 2016. I am happy to announce the return of the West McQueen Street Band. Everyone
had so much fun.
Membership Dues for 2015 are Payable Now!
$30 for primary membership dues. $15 for secondary membership dues. Junior membership fees
are only $10 per year.
Damenchor Members should send their checks to Ruth Sepich at 32 Oakridge Pt, Morton, IL
61550.
Harmonie Members should send their checks to Pete Bachfischer at 1357 Timber Oak Dr.,

SVP Members should send their checks to Steve Dippel at 101 Amsler St, Bartonville, IL 61607.
You can also hand over your check at a membership meeting to one of the officers above or if they
are NOT there the affiliate treasurer or president.
I would not recommend writing one check to cover both your primary and secondary membership
dues. If you do, make sure you notify both affiliates as to what your check covers and make sure
they acknowledge that your dues have been paid. I normally write separate checks to each affiliate.
For Harmonie, I pay my dues on-line through CEFCU Bill Pay.
Please write separate checks to each affiliate. We do not have processes in place to make sure you
renewal funds get to the proper affiliate if you try to write one check for multiple affiliates.
NOTE: I would encourage all members to renew by check. That way you will have a record of
paying your dues. We’ve had folks over the years who somehow did not get credit for paying their
dues and were dropped from our roster through no fault of their own.
URGENT!!!
For those of you who have moved and or planning to move PLEASE!!!!! notify the membership
secretary in the affiliate you belong to as to your new address.

Starkbier
Starkbier is a strong beer which is consumed in Germany during Lent. The "strength" of the beer is not
referring to the alcohol content, instead it describes the concentration of dissolved solids: the starch, sugars,
proteins and minerals. The technical name for these solids is the "Wort".
This being Germany, the supreme land of rules and regulations, you'll probably not be surprised to learn
there are laws governing which beers may qualify as Starkbier. There are two types of Starkbier: Bockbier
and Dopplebock. Bockbier must be at least 16% wort whilst Doppelbock must be at least 18%. The famous
"Salvator" Starkbier brewed by Paulaner weighs in at 18.3% wort. It's a Doppelbock. This means that for
every liter of Starkbier, if you boil away the water and alcohol you have 183 grammes of solids remaining. Or,
in layman's terms, one Mass (liter) contains roughly the same amount of Stuff as 16 loaves of bread. Hence:
liquid food. For the monks, fluid doesn't break fasting rules.
Although the "Stark" in Starkbier is nothing to do with the alcohol content, the alcohol levels are indeed
higher. A Bockbier is 7% whilst the Salvator Doppelbock is 7.5%. This is in comparison to the 5% for a
normal beer.
Don't mention this to a Bavarian or they won't speak to you again but Starkbier is not actually a Bavarian
creation. The first Doppelbock was brewed in 1352 up in Hannover, North Germany (Einbeck Bock Beer).
The monks at Munich's Paulaner monastery only caught on in 1773 when the famous Brother Barnabas
came up with his Salvator receipe. This same brew has remained largely unchanged for more than two
centuries. Originally the monks were forbidden to serve Salvator to anyone outside the monastery. This
particular rule was quickly repealed in 1780 because the monks never obeyed it anyway.
Whilst the Palauner Salvator is the most famous of the Munich Starkbiers, the other breweries also have their
own versions. Löwenbräu have a brew they call "Triumphator". The Augustiner have "Maximator". And the
Airport brewery, can you guess? Yep... Aviator. Not kidding.
