his arrival in New South Wales as the anticipated Governor of
the colony, but his record of achievements were not evident

King with Governor Hunter’s recall to England. King was
immediately embroiled in a disagreement with the NSW
military - leading to him court marshalling four officers. King
asked in 1804 to be recalled to England and eventually he was

by the Royal Geographical Society to locate Livingstone as
there was rumours of his death
circulating in England. These
rumours were started by the hired
men of Zanzibar who arrived
claiming their payment as
Livingstone had been murdered by
natives. Due to the length of time
since the last correspondence
received by the Society there was
possible credence in the claim. Young
was convinced that Livingstone was
still alive, but was unable to locate
him. But his book of the search over 7
months is a real explorer’s journey.

Gavin Duffy, Nice, Jan, 1898. Sir Duffy migrated from Ireland
to Melbourne Australia and quickly moving into the Victorian
parliament and eventually Premier. Duffy was more of a
political reformist than what the Melbournians were expecting.
One of his first bills was to have suffrage for all men of voting
age in Victoria not just the land owners. The bookplate is from
Marion Hary Spielmann who was the editor of the Magaine of
Art and the The Connoisseur. One presumes that they were
friends due to Duffy’s original editorship of The Nation and
Spielmann’s magazines for lively debate. (ADBD Vol. 4). 21222

Library of Victoria. Will Alma was born in Melbourne in 1904
and his father who abandoned the family when Will was a
child was also a vaudeville magician. Will became a performer
but alos was a manufacturer and supplier of tricks and
equipment. In the 1930’s he established the Alma Magical
Company which was the publisher of this magazine. Scarce.
