September, 2015 BISHOP GRIMES JR./SR. HIGH SCHOOL FAITH • ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE • SERVICE Celebrating 50 Years | Yesterday, Today, Always A Message from David Wheeler, Principal Welcome to Bishop Grimes for the 2015-16 school year! If you are new to our school, rest assured, we will welcome you in a variety of ways beginning with your Orientation. If you are returning to Bishop Grimes, you will immediately notice some great improvements from our new “curb appeal” (flowers, shrubs, mulch) provided by so many Anaren employees who volunteered their time (see article below) on a recent Friday, to the fresh blue walls, also painted by many great volunteers—our neighbors at Anaren. You will also see that several administrative offices including Guidance, Attendance, Admissions and the Mission Advancement Offices are now conveniently located on the first floor to the left as you enter through the front door. Another dramatic change you can’t miss is our completely new and resurfaced parking lot in both the front and back of the school. Monsignor Richard Kopp, a great friend of Bishop Grimes, has procured the beautiful tabernacle for our chapel that was formerly in the chapel of the recently sold Stella Maris Retreat Center in Skaneateles. We are so grateful to Monsignor and to the Sisters of Saint Francis who owned the house. All of these improvements should help us keep our motto ever present in our minds: “Faith, Academic Excellence, and Service”. These are not just words posted in strategic locations in the building, but they are ideas that should take root in our hearts as we return to the rigors of the new school year. Beginning a new school year is a great opportunity to start with a ‘clean slate’, possible goals, and a renewed sense of purpose. May our Lord keep us all in His watchful care as we strive to live our Bishop Grimes motto. God Bless. We would like to invite our BG students and their families to attend Bishop Grimes’ Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, September 2nd at 6:00pm. This is a great way to meet new students, faculty members, and the administration. The ice cream social is free to all current BG students, their families, and incoming new students. There will be ice cream, toppings, and prizes, with a special appearance from 93Q. New student Orientation will follow the ice cream social. Welcome New Students and Faculty Members! We welcome our new students from the following feeder Catholic schools: Holy Cross, Holy Trinity, Immaculate Conception, Blessed Sacrament, CAP, St. Margaret’s, St. Mary’s Baldwinsville, and St. Rose. We also welcome the following new faculty and staff members: Mrs. Brisson, Social Studies; Mrs. Wicks, Physics; Ms. Klunder, Resource; Mrs. Eichelberger, Religion; Mrs. Dostie, Religion; Mrs. Insel, Cafeteria; Mr. Welcyh, Science; Mrs. Marshall, Mission Advancement Secretary; Mrs. Belge, Administrative Assistant; and Mrs. Schultz, Attendance. MISSION STATEMENT Bishop Grimes shares in the evangelizing mission of the Roman Catholic Church, a mission that has been handed on by Christ and his apostles and received by generations of believers. Therefore, we seek to help students take part, with the current generation of believers, in receiving and handing on their Catholic faith by coming to know it, live it, and share it. We accomplish this mission by providing a high quality and rigorous Catholic education that prepares students in mind, body, and spirit to encounter Christ, live their faith in the context of His Church, and serve others in His name, particularly the poor and those who are in need. HIGH SCHOOL FAITH • ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE • SERVICE Cell Phone Policy Mark Your Calendars… Use of electronic devices are prohibited in the classroom, including Study Hall, unless explicit permission is granted by the classroom teacher for educational purposes only. The use of electronic devices is permitted in the hallways between classes during passing time and in the cafeteria during lunch periods. Headphones and/or earbuds are not to be visible in the classroom. Students wearing headphones in the hallway must leave one ear “unplugged” for safety purposes. All electronic devices, including cell phones and portable music players, must be turned off and put away or turned in to the teacher’s designated spot upon entering any classroom. The electronic device policy will be strictly enforced by all. Please support Bishop Grimes by attending as many events as possible. While many faculty members are in awe of the capabilities of the new smart watches that are available, we are also aware that these devices present a number of instructional concerns within the classroom, especially in the area of academic integrity. These watches have already been banned in testing rooms for state exams (i.e., Regents or Common Core) and national exams (i.e., SAT & ACT). In keeping with these policies, Bishop Grimes has decided that students are not to wear any type of smart watch to school on any day. We thank you in advance for cooperation. HIGH SCHOOL FAITH • ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE • SERVICE A Night under the Stars Dinner/Auction Bishop Grimes will be introducing a new component to this year’s, A Night under the Stars Dinner/Auction. The Alumni Committee will be recognizing the following individuals who have made a difference: Barb Pfefferle will be presented the Alumni Faculty Award. This award is being given to Barb in recognition of her years of service as an educator and for her career successes. This award speaks of loyalty, the dedication and distinguished service to the Catholic Community. Barb came to Bishop Grimes High School in the fall of 1969 as a full time Physical Education teacher. She took over the girls’ basketball team as the coach and the team went undefeated during the 1969-1970 season. Barb was instrumental in developing and coaching girls’ softball, tennis, volleyball, and track and field. She led the charge for equality in sports at BG long before Title IX became law. Her female student-athletes’ GPA was so high that the Booster Club made separate awards for boys and girls to keep the girls from winning a majority of the awards. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, raised in Wisconsin, and attended Wisconsin State University at Oshkosh. Barb retired after 46 years in June 2015. In June 2014, Barb was awarded the Barrett Award by Bishop Grimes for Outstanding Achievement in Catholic Education. It is the highest award given to a faculty member by the school. She has won many awards throughout her career and continues to be a great humanitarian to her students, friends and family. The Alumni Achievement Award recognizes an alum who has excelled in his/her field and attained outstanding success. General Thomas P. Kane, from the Class of 1970, will be given this most prestigious award. General Kane was the Class President of the Bishop Grimes Class of 1970. He was also a member of the National Honor Society and Varsity Baseball team. After graduating from high school, General Kane went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree in International Relations from the United States Air Force Academy. He also received a Master’s Degree in National Security Management and a Master’s Degree in International Relations. While in the Air Force, he held various command and staff positions, including commanding Air Force Wings and leadership positions in Europe (NATO) and Asia (United Nations, Japan, and Korea). He was promoted to Major General in 2004. General Kane met his wife, Renee, also an Air Force veteran, during service and was married for 37 years, before her death in 2012 after battling a serious illness. They have three children, John, Kelly, and Lauren. After retiring from the Air Force in 2007, Tom joined Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings. As Vice President of Defense and Government Programs, he is responsible for working closely with all AAWW departments and defense and government agencies. Danielle Cummings will be presented with the Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award. This award recognizes an individual for his/her outstanding contributions to the school community and society through professional and personal experience. Danielle Cummings is the Chancellor and Director of Communications for the Syracuse Catholic Diocese. She has been working in the diocese for 19 years. Since 1996, she has served as the diocesan spokesperson and is responsible for all external and internal communications, public relations and media relations for the seven county area encompassing 185,000 Catholics. Prior to her position with the Diocese, Danielle spent ten years working with the City of Syracuse and County of Onondaga in a community-wide alcohol and drug prevention program. She is a graduate of Syracuse University where she earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree. She is currently a member of the Partners for Ministry Board for the Sisters of St. Francis and had previously served as the sponsor liaison to the St. Joseph Hospital Board. On Friday, August 7th, Bishop Grimes experienced the community spirit of one of its neighbors and what a difference it made. Bishop Grimes looks beautiful! Employees from Anaren worked with the school identifying projects that needed to be completed before the new school year began. As a result, Anaren volunteers pruned trees, pulled weeds, relocated shrubs, mulched beds, and raked and rototilled. They also planted new flowers, bushes and trees, donated by Chuck Hafner of Hafners Farms, around the new LED sign. Alice Wikoff, a Process Engineer for Anaren, directed 15 employees who worked tirelessly throughout the morning to complete the project. Anaren also donated the mulch they spread that day. Mrs. Linda Kellish provided the landscape design. Our hallways and stairwells received a fresh coat of BG powder blue paint and are now a brighter color. More than 50 Anaren employees participated in this painting project. Michael Len, Mechanical and Process Engineer Manager for Anaren, was responsible for coordinating the efforts of this large task. Anaren generously donated all of the materials. Thank you Anaren, Chuck Hafners, Mrs. Linda Kellish, Mission Advancement, the custodial staff and our football players for making this project happen.
