2010 SAINTAnnual BEDE Report A Note from Donna’s Desk To say that the past nine months have been enlightening and educational would be an understatement. However, Homecoming weekend clearly defined the role of the development office in executing the mission of Saint Bede Abbey and Academy. After visiting with alumni from all fifteen classes celebrating their reunion, observing the more than 5,000 Bruin fans who gathered for the Homecoming football game, and participating in the Golden Bedan ceremony and Mass, I believe that sustaining the spirit of Saint Bede and keeping the tradition alive is imperative. These words echo in my head and resonate in my heart. As a product of a Catholic education, I understand the importance of the funding needed to ensure the fiscal stability Saint Bede Abbey and Academy require to make certain our tradition continues for future generations. As Dr. Struck states in his message to you on page 15, the development office has been charged with developing new strategies to increase the annual fund, pursue major gifts, and to assist alumni with planned giving to Saint Bede. Our strategies are simple: participate in the Saint Bede Auction and the Special Gift Club. 3. Personal acknowledgement of your gifts – don’t be surprised when you get a phone call just to say “thank you”! 4. Communication between you and the development office – a letter from time to time letting you know that your gifts are being used appropriately, a quarterly E-newsletter letting you know what’s happening around here, and any other way that we can keep you connected. I am optimistic that we can become financially stable by the end of the 2010–2011 fiscal year. I am confident that the development office can carry out the strategies set forth. I am certain that all of this can and will be done with your financial commitment to partner with me to preserve the spirit and tradition of Saint Bede Abbey and Academy. Fondly, 1. Cultivate relationships – expect to hear from us! Expect to be invited back to campus often! 2. Minimize the number of asks – this is a BIGEE! We are only going to ASK you one time for your contribution to the annual fund.* Please acknowledge your appreciation of this one time ask by increasing your annual fund gift, if you can find it in your heart. Together, we will create the change that is needed to preserve the more than 100 years of history, tradition and honor of Saint Bede Abbey and Academy. In addition, you will receive an invitation to 2 Donna Aleksy * Those who traditionally give between July 1st and December 31st, or whose giving occurs at varied times of the year, will receive a letter in November with a reminder call from our phonathon friends in February. Those who traditionally give between January 1st and June 30th will receive a letter in January with a reminder call from the development office in May. Saint Bede 2010 annual RepoRt What’s in a title? When I was first appointed to the development office I inherited the title of Vice President for Mission Advancement. At first blush, the title just seemed to be a covert way of saying that I am someone who would ask for money. I have finally come to appreciate the fact that I am working to advance the mission of Saint Bede Abbey and Academy. Our efforts to fulfill our mission are often impeded because of lack of funds. What is the mission of Saint Bede Abbey? As I thought about answering this question my mind went back to an incident that occurred in 1967 when I was working the midnight shift at Marquette Cement Plant. One of the workers found out that I was thinking of joining Saint Bede Abbey, so he asked me a lot of questions. After a fairly long discussion he said something like, “You mean you are going to have to do what this abbot tells you to do; you won’t have any money of your own; you won’t have a girlfriend, wife or children; you have to stay in the same place even if you don’t like some of the people; and you have to spend a couple of hours every day in prayer?” When I answered, “yes”, he replied “You must either be crazy, or maybe I need to think a little more about God and how I should live!” I didn’t reply to his statement, but in fact our main mission is to witness to the reality of living in Christian community where God is primary, and life is about eternal life, and not just about the here and now. I hope that as people encounter the monks or even drive by Saint Bede, they will be led to recognize what we stand for, and who we serve. How does this connect with the mission of Saint Bede Academy? From our earliest days we have been dedicated to working with teenagers who are in the midst of many personal changes: trying to understand themselves, what life is all about and how they should live. The very witness of our lives should raise questions for them that challenge so much of what they see and are told by society. Our goal is not just to prepare them for college and a career, but to help establish basic Christian values that will guide them in this life and lead them to eternal life. Given the state of our society and the world, I don’t know if the witness of our mission has ever been more important. You have benefited from your experience of the monks and life at Saint Bede. We appreciate your support of our mission, and beg you to continue to help us through your generous gifts. All that you do to help advance our mission is a blessing in this life, but also one for all eternity. May God continue to bless you. For Mike Rosploch (’87) the decision to attend Saint Bede was not his but rather his father’s. Mike’s dad had an interview with Fr. Henry Fritz, OSB, who was the principal of Saint Bede at that time. The result of the interview was that Mike’s dad came home and announced to the family, “The kids (sister Lisa included) are going to Saint Bede.” Mike is not sure exactly what they talked about during the interview, but he is grateful to his dad and to Fr. Henry. Mike looks like an athlete and he tells of the influence coach John Bellino had on his relationship with Saint Bede, which continues to this day. After graduation Mike attended Quincy College, where he played football and graduated with a pre-law, political science major. His first job was with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency, but his ambition was to join the FBI. A physical difficulty prevented him from pursuing that ambition. He then served for a time with the Youth Service Bureau in Ottawa, Illinois. When funding no longer became available for the YSB, Mike decided to start his own business. He sensed an affinity for landscaping work when he helped with the construction of the Oak Ridge golf course east of LaSalle. In 1995, R & R Landscaping was founded with its initial equipment being “a wheelbarrow and some shovels.” Hard work and determination has made the business a success, and he now has nine employees for a firm that has contracted landscaping projects all over northern Illinois. Preparing the new football field. For Mike, time is money! But not when it comes to volunteering at Saint Bede. His contributions of time are countless. His most recent contributions to Saint Bede include supervising the installation of a new grass football field, improvements on the softball field, and the construction of a pork chop stand in cooperation with the Bedan Club. Perhaps his most significant contribution is touting the benefits of a Saint Bede education to the area youth. Mike has been an assistant in the Saint Bede football program for five years under his former coach, John Bellino. Mike’s contributions of time are a superb example of his desire to “give back” to his old school. He is a leader among many alumni who have contributed to the strength of the future of the academy. Saint Bede 2010 annual RepoRt 11 Talent Tom Pigati - Gives of his Tom Pigati ‘69 Tom Pigati, ’69, didn’t think he would be attending Saint Bede Academy as a youngster. Family members on his mother’s side, (Margaret Flannery) had been maintenance providers at LaSalle-Peru Township High School since 1915. His connection to Saint Bede began in grade school at Saint Patrick’s in LaSalle when he decided to join many of his classmates enrolling at Saint Bede as a freshman. He enjoyed his student days, impressed as he was with the relationship between the teaching monks and the students. But he says that the best qualities of Saint Bede were fully realized only after his three sons and his daughter had completed exposure to four years of schooling at the academy. He saw the influence of the Bedan experience on the character Joe ‘74 The Pigati Brothers of his children. He recalled, in his own case, how the faculty look after the students when one of the monks discovered that he belonged in an advanced math class and effected a transfer after the semester had begun. Membership in the Bedan Club as an alumnus gave him the opportunity to “give back” to Saint Bede through the dedication of time and talent as a builder. Among his many contributions to Saint Bede are projects such as replacing windows, improving the sound in the music room with new ceiling tiles, and contract work on the Worship Assembly Building. Tom works alongside his younger brother Joe, ’74 providing quality craftsmanship and a friendly smile. The Pigati construction firm most recently has contributed significantly to the Saint Scholastica building, which has the capacity to house sixteen female boarding students. The project included renovating the farm house adjoining Saint Scholastica Hall. For those of you who know Tom, you know he is a quiet, behind-the-scenes guy who doesn’t like to be noticed. Although he was flattered to have been chosen for this tribute, he agreed to the interview with the hope that it might inspire other alumni to offer their talent to Saint Bede. Tom and Joe Pigati of Pigati Builders. 12 Tom ‘69 Saint Bede 2010 annual RepoRt A Treasure Angelo Perino - Gives of his Abbot Claude Peifer ‘44 and Angelo Perino ‘80 at the 2009 SBA Commencement What motivates people to give to Saint Bede Academy? According to alumnus Angelo Perino (’80), there are three primary motivations for giving: 1. a personal sense of indebtedness, 2. support for continuation of mission, and 3. respect and love for the institution. Angelo explains as follows: Personal Indebtedness For many of the over 6000 alumni that have walked the halls of Saint Bede Academy over the past 118 years, there is a feeling of personal indebtedness. This feeling emanates from the belief that Saint Bede has had an instrumental impact on one’s life. Many alumni feel that Saint Bede helped instill the knowledge, values and spiritual strength that defines who they are today, and I am no exception. I personally believe that Saint Bede teaches young men and women the essential lessons in life ... that achievement comes with hard work, that leadership is forged through adversity, and that service is an important part of who we are as Christians. Saint Bede held a special significance for me as a boarder, because it was my home for four years. I personally will always feel indebted to the monks, faculty and coaches of Saint Bede Academy for helping to provide me with discipline, guidance and direction in the early years of my life. Continuation of Mission Saint Bede serves an important mission of “providing a Christ-centered secondary education to young men and women of the Illinois Valley and beyond”. I had the good fortune to serve on the recent capital campaign entitled “Commitment to Future Generations”. During this campaign, hundreds of alumni expressed their overwhelming desire to see Saint Bede continue its mission. A few quotes from the campaign’s benefactors include: “The Saint Bede experience is surely one that is worth protecting and enhancing for generations to come” (Bob Bringer, ‘48). “Saint Bede has a very strong tradition of academics, athletics, and most importantly, of quality Catholic education. I want to see that tradition continue for our youth, our future” (Lori Janko Wilke, ‘82). “A sense of unity and family was evident at Saint Bede, and I wanted to be a part of it” (Anna Slevin, ‘03). “There is an alternative to having to send your child to a public school ... it’s called Saint Bede. If you want your children to have what you remember high school to be like in your day, send your children to Saint Bede”, (Jan Chaon, LaSalle). The possibility that Saint Bede may no longer be able to continue its mission is an unsettling thought for me personally, and this consequently serves as an ongoing motivator for me to continue to give. Respect and Love for the Institution The third motivation for giving has to do with the respect and love one feels for the institution. This speaks directly to the people that make up Saint Bede Abbey and Academy. Understanding the unselfish commitment that the monks, faculty, staff and coaches make day in and day out, year after year, for the benefit of its students is role-model behavior. To give unselfishly for the benefit of others, to teach young men and women the importance of service, sacrifice, leadership, values and integrity; and to measure oneself not by how much money you make but by the impact you have on others’ lives, is the ultimate demonstration of “leading by example” and it generates tremendous respect and love for the institution. Having sent two children to Saint Bede and having seen the positive impact it has had on their lives has only served to strengthen my love and respect for the institution. (Photo): The Saint Bede Academy community 2010 – 2011 14 Saint Bede 2010 annual RepoRt From the Desk of the Superintendent As the person who was hired “under a mandate to restore fiscal health, without sacrificing academic quality,” I am pleased to have this opportunity to comment on the fiscal year 2010 annual report. Although the academy finished the year with an operational deficit, the academy’s change in net assets reflects a surplus. I would like to report additionally that our ACT scores continue their upward trend to a current historically high average of 22.8, and also that 20% of the class of 2010 were named Illinois State Scholars. To present a financial report that continues to show signs of stability at a time when we are suffering from the worst financial downturn since the great depression enables us to declare our optimism regarding the future fiscal stability of Saint Bede Academy. As mentioned in last year’s annual report, several factors have been identified as capable of strengthening our fiscal position. Among these factors the most significant are: increasing our student population to 310-320, effective management of student aid and tuition collection, and maintaining a boarding student population of 20-25 students. We continue to come closer to meeting these standards and, as a result, fiscal year 2010 was a good year for the academy. However, there are still significant areas of concern that must be addressed before the academy can truly declare itself to be financially secure. As a result of many years of deficit budgets, Saint Bede Academy has accumulated debt in the amount of $1.8 million. The major part of this money was “borrowed” from academy endowed funds. This practice results in a significant loss of interest income each year. Although strategies are in place to repay this debt, we have to wait to implement those strategies until the loan for Saint Scholastica Hall is paid off in eight years. Responsible accounting practices require us to review and provide accurate aging schedules of our receivables. This year, at our auditor’s recommendation, we reviewed over $400,000 in unpaid capital campaign pledges to our endowment, many of which remain inactive. As a result of this review, our auditors are strongly recommending that we reconcile these uncollected pledges by either collecting them or writing them off as a loss over the next few years. The initial write-off of these pledges was included in this year’s financial statements and is the most significant reason for the operating deficit reflected therein. Our annual fund contributions have been stagnant over the last five years. These contributions are second only to tuition as a revenue producer for the academy. Through budget cuts we were able to manage in spite of the lack of growth from this very important income source. However, our current budget reflects as much efficiency and frugality as is possible without jeopardizing our mission to provide Saint Bede Academy students with an appropriate preparation for a college education. To remediate the stagnant level of annual giving to Saint Bede, Donna Aleksy and her staff have been charged with developing new strategies to increase the annual fund, pursue major gifts, and assist alumni who want to make a planned gift to Saint Bede. As pointed out, the fiscal year 2010 financials allow us to declare our optimism for the future; however, there is much more work to do and more challenges to surmount. I am confident that, given the talent and dedication of the Saint Bede faculty and staff and the benevolence of the entire Saint Bede community, the challenges before us will be overcome. Saint Bede 2010 annual RepoRt Sincerely, Dr. Ted Struck Superintendent 15 Message from Abbot Claude During this year the monastic community of Saint Bede Abbey has been celebrating the 100th anniversary of our existence as an independent abbey. In 1910 thirteen monks of our motherhouse, Saint Vincent Archabbey, who were currently stationed here and wished to remain, received the requisite authorization to become an autonomous monastery and elected Father Vincent Huber as our first abbot. We have had two major celebrations of the centennial: one in February with the bishop and priests of our diocese of Peoria, the other in September with the archabbot of Saint Vincent and abbots and monks of neighboring monasteries, relatives and friends of the community, and representatives of the religious communities and numerous groups of laity who have accompanied, collaborated, and supported us in so many ways in our monastic life and apostolic efforts. Before our independence in 1910, Saint Bede had already existed for nineteen years as a priory dependent upon Saint Vincent and staffed by its monks, who were sent here on a temporary basis, although some of them stayed for a long time, and the thirteen founders elected to stay permanently. The date of the original foundation was 1891, and September of that year also marked the opening of the school, which began as Saint Bede College with some fifty students in that first year. The school has undergone various transformations in the 119 years of its existence, but it has always constituted the principal apostolic endeavor of the monks. Profound changes have taken place in the Church in the past few decades, and one of the most notable of these has been the decline of the Catholic school system, to such an extent that Catholic grade schools and high schools have become an endangered species. While various factors have contributed to this development, one of the principal causes has been the shrinkage and aging of the religious communities that formerly supplied most of the staffing for them. This has had a notable effect upon us here at Saint Bede. While alumni from a few decades ago were accustomed to having monks as teachers and prefects almost exclusively, the administrative and teaching staff is now composed almost entirely of lay people. This is no doubt the greatest transformation that has occurred, along with the accompanying change from a predominantly boarding school for boys to what is now primarily a day school for both boys and girls. While these changes have produced a different life experience for our present students than that of previous generations, probably many people do not realize the extent to which they have also changed our financial situation. Paying salaries that are 16 competitive enough to attract teachers and administrators who are both qualified and motivated to maintain the academic standards and the religious and moral tone that we demand of them, in addition to all the other costs that we have to meet, is an ongoing challenge every year. The resulting deterioration of our finances has come about gradually for several decades. As Dr. Struck has explained in this issue, we have taken measures to reverse this trend and restore solvency, but the present economic depression has added an additional burden, although there is reason for optimism for the future. The figures on the opposite page tell the story for the fiscal year 2009-2010. To get a bird’s-eye view of our finances, I believe that it is helpful to examine the column that shows the average cost per student this past year. It cost us $8,597 to educate each student. Since we collected an average of only $4,430 in student fees, these paid only 51.5% of the actual cost. The other income items show where the rest of the remaining $4,167 came from. The largest amount came from fund raising: 20.8% or $1,789 per student, and an additional 5.2% ($443) is also the result of gifts that came in previously and were released for spending during this year. The subsidy that we receive from parishes in the local area is decreasing, but this year it paid for $519 per student or 6% of the cost. The other income categories contributed smaller amounts, but were nevertheless essential to our budget. The income from boarding students paid 3.5% of our cost or $301 per student. Investment income paid $217 per student or 2.5 %, and income from extracurricular activities amounted to $141 per student or 1.6 % of the cost. Other income sources amounted to $249 per student, or 2.9%. All these sources combined amounted to income of $8,089 per student. That total, however, is still $508 short of the $8,597 that we spent on each of our students. This means that 5.9% of the per-student cost was not covered by any income, but has to be added to our accumulated operating deficit, a total of $153,657. We had a balanced budget, and were actually expecting to realize a small surplus this year but, as Dr. Struck explains on page 15, we had to write off some pledges that appear to be uncollectible, and to write down the value of some receivables. We really need a larger endowment to offset the impact of such factors that are relatively unpredictable. The abbey centennial this year provided an occasion for giving thanks for all of the numerous blessings that we have received from the Lord and from many benefactors in the past century and for recommitting ourselves to service of others in the academy and in all our other apostolic endeavors. We continue to be grateful to all who assist us in the daunting task of keeping our educational apostolate afloat in the straitened economic circumstances of the present moment.
