The 47th edition of the Fremantle to Geraldton Race represents the continuation of one of this state’s finest yachting traditions and it is one of which SoPYC is proud to be an integral part. The vessels that will leave the start line on Friday bare scant resemblance to those that completed the journey nearly half a century ago. Carbon fibre, Mylar and high end electronics have replaced timber, varnish and celestial navigation. And yet, for all this, blue water sailing is still yachting at its most raw and most challenging. Once at sea, especially on our lee shore coast line, there are few if any places to run in the event of misadventure or tough conditions. This is not the pastime of the faint hearted. It’s been said many times that there is a certain swagger that goes with being a “Gero” veteran. And so there should be. To take on the Indian Ocean as well as the fleet is no small undertaking. Preparation of boat and crew needs to be meticulous and uncompromising. Maintaining the competitive edge when you’re wet, cold and tired takes a special kind of readiness as well as confidence in your craft and your companions. I know that no one takes on this race lightly, and this year’s crews will be no different. As ever, the event would be impossible without sponsors and volunteers. We are particularly grateful to Abbots Accountants and of course the City of Greater Geraldton for their on-going support of the event. And for those of us who count ourselves amongst the armchair ocean racers, our special thanks to Panataenius whose generosity has allowed us to again deploy the trackers that let us follow the progress of the fleet in real time from the comfort of the bar! Indeed, to all our many sponsors, the army of volunteers on-water and onshore and to the entire race organisation, a heartfelt thank you for the enormous effort that staging this incredible race requires. Finally, to the crews that will venture out on Friday to follow the rhumb line to Geraldton: good luck, fair winds and following seas. I look forward to welcoming you all safely home and to hearing the latest edition of “When I did Gero …” stories. Weather conditions along the coast are beginning to settle into the normal summer sailing pattern and this all goes well for a good race north to Geraldton and hopefully, not too strong for the return leg south. The City of Greater Geraldton has again provided sponsorship for the race and that sponsorship will enable participating yachts to be moored in the Department of Transport pens within the Batavia Coast Marina. I look forward to having the race participants and families taking the opportunity to stay the week in Geraldton and enjoy the activities that have been arranged, both on and off the water. I take this opportunity to thank all of the organising staff and the host of volunteers at both the South of Perth Yacht Club and the Geraldton Yacht Club for their efforts in support of this annual Blue Water Classic. I wish all competitors a safe and successful race to Geraldton, I look forward to your participation in the Lobster Pot Series, your participation in social activities whilst in Geraldton and I wish you a safe and successful Return race to Fremantle. ARGO certainly has race form in winning the 2013/14 Siska Trophy (as Hoodoo Man) and Chris planned to start its 2014 campaign with the 46th Geraldton Ocean Classic, but the yacht required some strengthening after a gruelling 2013/14 campaign and Chris put it in the shed for a few months and sailed his Dufour 34E Numbers Game in the 2014 Geraldton instead. ARGO finally made it out for the end of the 2014 season for the Cape Vlamingh Race and used the Valmadre as a shake down series for the 2015 Season. Argo has been steadily finding form with the 1st two races of the season delivering a 2nd and a 3rd on IRC so far. With Peter Vlaar bringing his vast ocean racing experience to the team for 2015/16 season while Farrago waits on a new mast, ARGO is capable of rating highly in this race as they pursue their quest of the Golden Fleece. Alan Stein and his crew campaigned Dirty Deeds last season extremely hard and will again this season. They featured constantly in nearly every race, however this season they would prefer to win rather than 2nd or 3rd. Previous navigator, Adam Shand, is not fit enough following breaking his leg ice sakating during the winter months. This GP42 came 3rd on IRC in the October 2014 Fremantle to Geraldton Race and was also a runner up in last season’s Blue Water Series, both on IRC and YAH. However, they managed to win both YAH and IRC in the Beneteau Weekend Series but only managed a 3rd on YAH and IRC in the Beneteau Offshore Series. A strong contender for the Siska Trophy this season. They still managed 3rd on IRC in the Onesail Blue Water Series. Nevertheless, they are back with vengeance this season. The grand old lady of the sea is the oldest yacht in this Year’s Geraldton Race. Finistere has competed in more Geraldton races than the entire fleet put together. In the October 2014 race, Enterprise got 2nd on YAH and 3rd on IRC in the return race from Geraldton. 10 Owner Rob Thomas has comandeered a number of Mike Giles crew from Endorfin as Endorfin has sustained considerable damage in this year’s Wonderful Indonesia Bali race when they encountered several cray pots which tangled themselves around the keel and rudder. Here’s hoping the “Jinx” of cray pots with the Endorfin crew will not jeopardise Finistere’s quest to Geraldton. They have done the race before in Craig’s previous yacht Hoodoo Man. This dynamic duo of Todd Giraudo and David (Dubbo) White are such a formidable pair in two handed racing that they are fast becoming unbeatable. Following the Geraldton Race, Indian will be trucked by Dave McReady to Sydney for this year’s Sydney to Hobart and we wish Craig and his crew a fast and safe race. The are the only Double Haned yacht in the race and will be sailing in Division Two. In March last year, Hoodoo Man scooped the pool by winning both YAH and IRC overall. In the Onesails Blue Water Series last season, Todd and Dubbo won both YAH and IRC in the Double Handed Division. Astrid allowed the crew to campaign Calm last season following Tony’s death and it paid dividends as Calm, under the helm of Andrew Harry, won the coveted Siska Trophy. This will be Graeme Cole and this Archambault A35 Phantom’s first Geraldton Race representing East Fremantle Yacht Club. It has been a few years since this club has been represented. Years ago, Luke Rees competed in many Geraldton Races in his yacht Stormrider and was very successful so we are sure Graeme and his eager crew will be aiming high in this year’s race despite being the smallest yacht in the race. Peter Hickson, Brent Fowler, Brad Skeggs Jonothan Clough, Fergus Forbes, Gary Ralston Brian McMaster, Sam Mackintosh, James Bar John Naughton, Jay Halligan, Bob Langley Alison Stock, Kenny Ireland, Jayden Delfos New owner, Peter Hickson, will be competing in the Geraldton race as the qualifying race for this year’s Sydney to Hobart. In the March 2014 Geraldton Return, Peter’s previous boat, MEII, sustained some structural damage and returned to Geraldton for repairs. In the October Return Race of the same year, they won both YAH and IRC. We wish Peter and his crew fair winds and a fantastically quick race to Hobart. 12 Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program, October 2015 GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2015 PRIME FACTOR F20 SUE SEA F310 Design: LOA: Beam: Draft: Rig: Coachroof: Deck: Topsides: Bottom: Owner: Skipper: Navigator: Design: Marten 39 LOA: 15.0m Beam: 4.17m Draft: 3.6 Rig: Fractional Coachroof:White Deck: White Topsides: Navy Blue Bottom: White Owner: Brian Todd Skipper: Igor Mironenko Navigator: Igor Mironenko Farr 40 12.23m 3.83m 2.37m Fractional White Light Grey / White Light Grey / White Black Max Palleschi Max Palleschi James Mulcahy Crew Max Palleschi, Stacey Blake, Michael Sproxton Amanda Casebier, James Mulcahy, Mark Cowling James Halvorsen, Mike Jorgensen Crew: Igor Mironenko, Owner Max Palleschi is looking forward to this year’s Geraldton Race. They then went on to compete in the Wonderful Indonesia Race to Bali in May and achieved a third place on handicap. The much travelled Sue Sea has finally returned to her home port of Fremantle following this year’s Wondeful Indonesia Bali Race in May. Max and his crew are extremely enthusiastic and are highly competitive. The yacht made its way back to Darwin to compete in this year’s Darwin to Ambon Race in which they came 3rd on Handicap. In last year October Geraldton Race, Sue Sea won YAH on the Fremantle to Geraldton Race. This was sad as they were featuring very well on handicap. Owners Paul and Ceris Arns will once again campaign the Elan 410 Wasabi hard this season and have an excellent well balanced crew. The yachts competing in the Geraldton Ocean Classic will be fitted with Yellow Brick Trackers. Yellow Brick trackers are a rugged and fully self-contained battery operated tracker which works anywhere on Earth. The tracker will wake up every so often (e.g. every 15 minutes), obtain a position using the GPS satellite network, and then transmit that position back to Yellowbrick HQ using the Iridium satellite network in seconds. The message is relayed to us from Iridium, after which we will be able to visualize the positions on an easy-to-use web-based viewer. On the race viewer, visitors to the site will be able to view a display of waypoints, markers and rhumb line, historic tracks as well as the current location of the yachts, replay, display of speed and course for each yacht, skipper name and yacht name for each vessel plus the weather information provided via PredictWind. The race viewer will be accessible for the duration of the races north and return on the Club’s website at www.sopyc.com.au and is also available to view on smart phones via the App Store. The internet based viewer uses Adobe Flash and will require visitors to the site to have flash installed before it will work. Visitors to the site who do not have flash will be prompted to install it on first visit. The Yellow Brick Yacht trackers are provided courtesy of sponsorship by Pantaenius Yacht Insurance. 14 Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program, October 2015 GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2015 2015 Supplementary Sailing Instructions Part 1 – GENERAL 1.1 The organizing authority is the South of Perth Yacht Club (Inc.) in conjunction with the Geraldton Yacht Club (Inc.). 1.2 Races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of Yachting Australia, the Notice of Race and sailing instructions of Yachting Western Australia as set out in the Offshore Handbook 2015/2016 and these supplementary sailing instructions. Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program October, 2015 19 GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2015 FROM WEDGE TO WILUNA TO WHERE NEXT (Feature article by Bernie Kaaks) Argo’s skipper Chris Higham and his business partner Bradley Abbott would remember that during their (very much) younger days, their respective fathers, Ian (Biggles) Higham and John Abbott, were regular members of the legendary “Tender One” crew, joining radio guru Bryan Carter in providing radio relay for the Geraldton Race from Rottnest Island, while Ted Court and John Wilson operated “Tender Four” from Wedge Island. It was a primitive system, given that there were no mobile phones at the time and with a paucity of land lines at relay locations, position reports were often relayed from station to station and ultimately to race control at South of Perth, where positions were meticulously plotted onto paper charts. Moving to 4146kHz extended the range of HF radio signals during the race and made it possible to move the midrace relay point initially to Cervantes and later to Jurien – the beginning of a partnership with Jurien Volunteer Sea Rescue Group that continues to today. Category 2 radio position reporting took some new turns during the 2014/15 season. Geraldton Race communications were conducted through Barrett’s privately owned transmitter in Henderson via a computer link at the Club, while Fremantle Sailing Club’s Bali Race used the existing professional radio network at Wiluna. Wiluna’s transmitter, sited well away from the electrical interference of wi-fi installations, transformers, air conditioners, freezers and so on, gave much better range and signal quality. A third change was a recognition by Royal Perth Yacht Club of a previously little known rule that allows category 2 events following a coastline to use VHF communications instead of HF, providing that there are continuous shore based VHF communications along the full length of the course. The Albany and return races used this clause and sent a radio equipped vehicle to shadow the fleet as it moved along the coast. The downside of VHF only communications is that the shore based repeaters each operate on different channels, so as the race progressed, position reports had to be staggered to tie in to the nearest repeater station’s area of operation. This option is not available to the Geraldton race as gaps in VHF coverage still exist between Fremantle and Geraldton. Discontent with the racing rules’ adherence to HF radio for long races continues. HF radios are expensive and if not properly installed, can be frustratingly ineffective. On the other hand, a call made on HF radio can (in theory at least) be heard by every yacht in the race fleet and many shore stations as well – a valuable safety feature. Satphones have been used as an alternative to HF in a limited number of races. Experience has shown however, that satphones also suffer from a degree of unreliability. Whether that is due to operator error, poor installation or systemic failure is still not clear, but even with a perfect satphone, a yacht can only contact one other station at a time instead of sending a message that all fellow competitors can hear. There are obvious safety implications here. Satellite trackers on each boat have to a large extent negated the need for position reports. Race control personnel can happily sit in a comfortable office and monitor the progress of every competitor on a computer screen in real time. There have been instances where race control have been aware of a problem before a call for assistance has been made. It is also worth looking at the direction that communications are taking in big ticket events like the Volvo around the world race, where yachts are fitted with a satellite based communication installation to enable it to not only send voice and text messages, but also to stream video back to headquarters. Spectacular footage has been captured with fixed on-board cameras, providing wonderful media exposure for the race as well as superb safety coverage. Will this technology ever come down in cost to the extent where it might become the future of Western Australian race communications?
