This is a time to remember the contribution of Past Players, Current Players and the Players of the Future. It is a time to remember Past Champions, Medal Winners and Record Holders but also a time to respect the ordinary player that is the back bone of every Club. CLUB NOTES Be a part of a very bright future for the Saints regardless of the outcome on the field in 2012. It is our clubs 50th anniversary MULLEWA year in 2013…lets get this club flying so we can make last for another 50 years. The final round before the finals and today we are up against Go the Saints…Power…Pride…& Passion Rovers who seem to be in fine touch at the moment. Last weeks games were a bit of a wake up call for our players as the Royals pushed and fought. A win the for the league but not convincing considering that less than the 4 weeks ago we CHAPMAN VALLEY beat the Royals by over 200 points and kept them goaless. The reserves by about the same and of course not the best In what was a massive and pleasant surprise for both the prep for the colts as they had to under go another forfeit by league side and the supporters, one of the clubs favourite Chapman Valley in the space of 3 weeks. sons Kasey Green, former West Coast Eagle pulled on the The indigenous round this week and the Mullewa Saints Have boots to help out the boys against Mullewa. The presence nominated Ruthie Simpson. With three of her boys playing for of Kasey wearing the black and blue was obviously enough the Saints and the effort she puts in around the club we think stimulus for our team to jump early and go in at quarter time with a handy lead. The Saints realised that the 242 point it is is a great opportunity to let her know we appreciate it. We do have injuries going into finals and quite a few players win from 4 weeks previously was not going to be repeated who’s commitment does not seem to be there. As we and they came out in the second quarter determined to even the ledger. At half time there was nothing in it and we were mentioned to the player group a couple of weeks ago you hoping for a close result. To Mullewas credit they kept the need to train to win flags and if you do not listen to us now pressure on and steadily increased their half time lead for you will find out the hard way. the remainder of the game, running out comfortable winners. I would like to thank all our volunteers this year for their However with such a major turn-around from the earlier much needed help, without you I would have gone crazy. A round our team came into to the rooms at the end of the game reminder that Wednesday the 5th of September at 7pm up at with heads held high and a bit of confidence that with the right the recreation oval in Mullewa is the AGM for 2013. We would fitness levels and a positive attitude they could certainly be appreciate if we could get as many people as possible up competitive. to that as unlike previous years the football does not end in Our reserves side again missed out on the four points, but October anymore. that wasn’t due to a lack of endeavour, this group of guys, There are many positions up for grabs, lots of fun events bolstered by the return of some of our past players has gone and of course the main office bearers positions are wiped out every week regardless of numbers and given it their clean and also up for grabs including the Presidents. Your best shot, and they have been a credit to the club for their attendance will reflect your love for our club, so not attending commitment. Injuries continue to play a part in this season shows lack of support for the Saints. with Daniel Puglia leaving the field coughing up blood after FOOTBALL HOUR For Results, Teams and all the Talk Turn on to The Spirit 98.1 Saturday mornings from 10-11am 2 CLUB NOTES game for our club. Hopefully the boys will put in a hard and consistent effort, which is the way Watto has played all his games. Good luck Watto and team. Best players: Kasey Hasleby, Llewyn Connolly, Mitch Lang, Nathan Watson. BP Award: Mitch Lang, IGA Best Man: Wes Teakle Don’t forget our windup on the 6th October. Make sure you are all there to enjoy celebrating the end of the season. Also congratulations to Kingsley Smith for making the league squad at South Freo last week. Hopefully he will get a run in the first 22 this week. So for this week, good luck, go hard and go good. Rams!. a heavy contact and Willy Connell also coming off with an abdominal injury. In spite of this the team is looking forward to challenging Towns in the last game of the season this week at Nabawa. The Chapman Valley wind up and Award presentation night will be held on the 1st September at the Nabawa Club Rooms. Tickets are available from Vanessa Gould and she can be contacted on 0418216648 or [email protected], and don’t forget the Special General Meeting scheduled for the 10th September at the Geraldton Tennis Club commencing at 6pm. Come along and give us your input and maybe be a part of the clubs future. NORTHAMPTON ROVERS Well last week we played Rovers. The colts lost what was a close game until the last 5 mins or so when the opposition kicked away to win by 5 goals. More time on the training track by more of the team may have produced a different result. As it stands now the finals berth is in jeopardy, so go hard this week boys. Best players: Trent Simpson, Riley Craig, Shea Tomelty, Brayden Smith. The ressies had a very convincing win with some players missing, hopefully the boys will all get on the training track for the finals games coming up. Best players: Craig Lucas, Kayle Cripps, Tom Fairley, Mario Hill, Chad Fairley. The league were beaten, but held their own in the last quarter to fight the game out with pride. We play Railways this week, the leagues last game for the year. It is also Watto’s 150th Rovers welcome Mullewa to Sinosteel Midwest Oval for our last home game of the year before we host next weeks 1st semi finals. Currently it looks like both our league and colts will be playing finals footy and representing our club next week but the colts will need a strong showing today to make sure of that. Unfortunately the reserves wont make the 4 and today will be their last match of 2012. In patches this year the team has played really good footy but unfortunately are rarely able to sustain it over four quarters. The players must be congratulated on their efforts during the year and to a big thanks to the colts that have played to ensure the ressies have had a team. Also well done to Leigh Ninnis for his efforts as coach. A few doubted Ninno at first, but he has done a great job getting a team on the park every week and getting a few wins for the club as well. Ph: 9921 1779 Marine Terrace, Geraldton 3 CLUB NOTES momentum heading into the finals and are still in the hunt for 2nd spot. Good luck to them today. Last weeks saw a very entertaining colts game with our boys managing to move into the four with a four goal win. This puts them in the box seat for a finals berth but they need to win today or they will be relying on other results. Well done to Dylan Gill who played well and backed up with a great game in his league debut later in the day. The league match was one way traffic unfortunately with Northampton crippled by injury. Our boys played well working on things that hopefully will help them move deep into September but credit must also go to Northampton who never gave up despite the margin. Clint Bell and Leigh Ninno had a forward partnership reminiscent of Billy Brownless and Gary Ablett Snr as they piled on a combined 13 goals between them (Ninno clearly representing the larger Brownless). Also thanks to Northampton for their hospitality in allowing us to do our awards in their club after the game. The awards were- 1. Clint Bell, 2. Justin Crudeli, 3. Clayton Radcliffe, 4. Chris Cross. Rovers 2012 Club Champion & Vote Count has been set down for Saturday September 8th at the clubrooms. Last years was a huge night and this years edition promises to be even bigger. Tickets are available pre-sale only from Kylie Crudeli and include a 3 course meal. Dress is semi-formal. Well we have finally made it to the final round of the home and away season. The colts have finished already, with the forfeit of CV colts today. Hopefully the Reserves can finish on a high note with a win today, although it may not be enough to secure a finals place. The reserves have had an incredible turn around this season, winning more games this year than they have for many, and being competitive in many of the games they lost. The League need to put in a good performance today, following on from a win a couple of weeks ago against Rovers. They will want forward TOWNS WIND UP - Saturday October 13th , 60th Anniversary , Formal Dress, best dressed prizes, Live Entertainment, New improved format, 3 course meal, Bar open, More info coming RAFFLE - 1st prize Gas Pizza Oven & Stand, kindly donated by Kleenheat Gashouse. 2nd prize $250 Coates Hire Voucher, kindly donated by Coates Hire. His best haul in a season was 106 in 1991, which also made him leading goalkicker in the GNFL that year. Only six men have kicked 100 goals or more in a season and Bedford is one of only two players from Railways to have managed that feat. Bedford was also leading goalkicker for Railways another six times – in 1982, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1990 and 1992. Among his many career highlights was an eight-goal haul against Mullewa in the winning 1985 grand final. That was a special effort as the Blues completed a hat trick of flags but in 1982, did it the hard way – from the first semi. Railways won again from the first semi in 1985, and in three finals games that year, Bedford landed a Railways record 15 goals including seven in the first semi against Northampton. RAILWAYS Last Sunday we were hosted by Brigades and the day was not the most exciting as the results had little impact on the ladder. Nevertheless, our Colts were pumped to play and had a good day out with no injuries and our Colts leading goal kicker for the season Jayden Crowe adding another 3 to his total tally of 35 so far this season. Jayden has been selected as Colts Captain for this indigenous round. Jayden is new to our club this season and has been a pretty handy addition! Well done Jayden! Our Reserves had a very strong team going into the game but unfortunately there were 3 serious injuries in the 4th quarter. Nevertheless, they had a good win despite missing the top goal kickers Beau Barndon and Laurie Bellottie who were both unavailable to play. The ever-reliable Jamie Allen (Bones) has had a good season with 16 solid goals in the Reserves and he is our indigenous Reserves captain for the day. Our League side had a solid win and the goalkickers were many. Corey Foot added another 3 goals to his tally and sits on the GNFL goal kickers ladder in second spot with 65 so far. Our indigenous League Captain for the day is Anthony Jones who has had a solid season with 15 goals from his own boot as well as being instrumental in numerous more. In this indigenous round we honour past player John Bedford who started playing for us 1981. Over the next 10 years was famed for his strong marking and accurate kicking that produced a Railways record 414 goals including 47 in finals, another Railways record. In all he played 109 games for the Blues and was named among the Best Players 20 times including three times in finals. Only 10 men have kicked 400 Today the last game of the season we will welcome Northampton to the Rec and it should be an action packed day with a competitive Reserves game which should be a good test for the boys. Hopefully there will be no injuries during the powder puff game planned for 2pm before the League game. This was a very popular game last time it was played and it looks like it will become a regular feature when we host Northampton and its good to see some girls out on the field kicking the footy, girls can do it too! Our League boys will play in special yellow jerseys sponsored by Bank Of Queensland. After the game, these will be auctioned off with all profits being donated to the Cancer Council / Crawford Lodge. Last year was a huge success so please open your purses and place a bid after the game, its all for a good cause! The WASO ‘On the Road’ tour reaches people in regional Western Australia, introducing young people to the instruments of the orchestra and the world of classical music. A small group of musicians from WASO provided music workshops to students in Geraldton and Carnarvon to give them the opportunity to listen, observe and try out the classical instruments. Mitsubishi Corporation, Oakajee Port and Rail and CBH Group were proud to help bring WASO ‘On the Road’ to the Geraldton region. “At Oakajee Port and Rail, we’re delighted to support WASO ‘On the Road’. There are several synergies between our organisation and the farmers of the mid-west. “This is a great way to strengthen our relationship with the mid-west community and demonstrate our ongoing commitment to the region,” Oakajee Port and Rail Chief Executive John Langoulant AO said. WASO flute player Michael Waye, oboe player Elizabeth Chee, horn player Francesco Lo Surdo, bassoon player Jane Kircher-Lindner and bass clarinet player Alex Millier. Oakajee Port and Rail is developing a world-class deepwater port at Oakajee, 24km north of Geraldton, and a railway which will service the region’s emerging iron ore mines. It’s a project that will deliver local jobs and opportunities for decades to come. We see this weekly at our local GNFL games and the AFL televised games. Whichever way you analyse it, football matches are won by teams who best maximise their opportunities. Game plans, zones, floods and forward presses are all thrown out the window if players, and particularly forwards, fail to execute their shots at goal. What can be done about this??? Brian Taylor, a century goal kicker and former set-shot specialist coach at Collingwood, said a lack of meaningful practice was the major reason for the slide. Taylor said problems began at junior level, where coaches too often ignored the art. “That’s an issue, because that’s when you formulate the basis of any skill and it was also an issue at the elite level, where conditioning coaches closely monitored training load and often deterred players from taking too many shots,” Taylor stated. A new craze we’ve seen with set shots has been the emergence of the snap around the body or check side kick. Some players such as Steve Johnson have used it for the right reasons where they have perfected it through numerous hours on the training track to improve their goal kicking percentage. Another craze we’ve seen is players running into an open goal and kicking it along the ground instead of in the air - much to the horror of past players. It remains to be seen whether both of these crazes will improve goal kicking percentages. What it does show is that players understand they’re not improving and are trying new techniques to get better. But unless they commit a whole summer and make it a priority, coaches will still punch desks, remote controls will be thrown at TVs and players will continue to battle the yips. It would take a gutsy coach to be the leader in this field as it is with anyone who implements a whole new strategy to their game. But it could be the difference between winning and losing the flag in September and that’s how coaches are ultimately judged. GNFL that is what I like! 52 years strong! Why would you become an Umpire ? There may be a lot of interesting answers but I’m sure they don’t include so I can be abused every weekend. Or so I can go to the footy and run around in the middle and wreck the game. Without the Umpires you don’t have a game. The retention of Umpires is incredibly hard and I’m sure in the past 50 years of GNFL Footy there has been times when Clubs have had to supply their own Umpires for either Colts, Reserves or League. You only need to talk a look at some of the other Country Leagues where they have to supply their own to see how that works, but this league will soon be in the same position as Umpires continue to leave to go Fishing or play golf or enjoy their weekends with out getting personally abused. So unless you are prepared to pick up a whistle and have a go……just have a think about what you are going to say. It’s not that we can’t handle the moans and groans of your thought of our decision. Indigenous Round this weekend and the Umpires have the honour of presenting a pair of boots to the best player for each league game. Last Round of normal footy this weekend and then into the finals, there were a few comments regarding the waterboys from the weekend regarding coaching and failing to leave the ground. Be warned this will incur a free kick. If you are interested in becoming an Umpire [maybe next year] please speak to one of the GNFL Umpires I’m sure that they would love to have a few more new faces on board Have a great weekend at the footy and enjoy yourself and the game and remember RESPECT THE GAME………RESPECT THE UMPIRE (or at least try) Sipcam Australia is a leading supplier of farm chemicals to rural Australia.
