This year we celebrate the 43rd year of these famous ocean races. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our naming right sponsors Redink Homes and the other major contributors, the City of Fremantle, the City of Greater Geraldton and Hanson Construction Materials. Again we have a very strong fleet representing all corners of ocean racing yachts. Some are cruising yachts with others being the pinnacle of ocean racing machines. I take my hat off to all of the competitors for committing to such an event. An event of this magnitude takes an enormous amount of work from many volunteers from both South of Perth and Geraldton Yacht Clubs and with out these dedicated men and women it would be impossible, I thank you all very much. Finally I would like to thank all the yacht owners and their crew for competing in this great race for with out you there would not be a race. I look forward to meeting all of you and hearing the stories at the trophy presentations. I wish you all an exciting yet safe journey to Geraldton and return. Jaffa, the Malcolm Reynolds designed 39’ should sail well in both directions of the race. Terry Posma is the most active Royal Perth Yacht Club Offshore sailor who participates in nearly every ocean race. This will be the boats second Geraldton Race. He retired in the race in 2009, so Terry and his crew will be looking forward to finishing this race. Owner Rob Thomas who is now retired spends most of the time working on the boat, keeping it ship shape. She will be competing in the Lobster Pot series which hopefully will put her in good stead for the Batavia Cup. 10 Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2011 REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2011 Knee Deep HY161 Design: Launched: LOA: Beam: Draft: Rig: Coachroof: Deck: Topsides: Bottom: Owner: Skipper: Navigator: Farr 49 1999 15.28m 3.99m 2.80m Fractional White White Blue White Phil Childs and Frank Van Ruth Phil Childs Russell Balding Crew: Russell Balding, Steve Hartley, Phil Childs, Jeff Alp, Jack Chaston, Ray Major, Brad Skeggs, Darryl Armstrong, Alison Stock, Adam Shand, Peter Carstens, Jayden Delfos, Cory Saxon, Casey Skinner This Farr 49 will be competing in her 5th Geraldton race prior to going over east to do the Sydney to Hobart race with Optimus Prime. It would be much easier to organise one’s crew, unlike High Anxiety which he co-owned with his brother Dean and they would need a minimum of ten crew. He and his crew man, David (Dubbo) White will be having an exciting match race against veteran skipper, John Holder in his yacht Plus 16. This will definitely be a race between youth and age! There is no limit on what this Reichel / Pugh 62’ yacht can do here on the west coast. Local business man Alan Brierty bought his yacht across from Sydney to compete in the Geographe Bay Regatta in which he won IRC and line honours in every race. Limit also competed in the Bali Race in April and broke Rolly Taskers record and there is a great chance with the right conditions, he will break Elle’s Racing record of 1996. He also won both YAH and IRC in the Bali Race. The last time Alan (affectionately known as AB) completed in the Geraldton Race was 21 years ago in 1990 in his then yacht, a Davidson 40 named Once a Jolly Swagman and won the overall IOR division. Skipper Paul Eldrid did this race with Alan Brierty being his first ever offshore ocean race. 12 Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2011 REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2011 Plus 16 R5269 City of Greater Geraldton F51 Design: Launched: LOA: Beam: Draft: Rig: Coachroof: Deck: Topsides: Bottom: Owner: Skipper: Navigator: Marten 49 2008 15.0m 4.15m 3.6m - 2.1 Fractional White White White Grey Trevor Taylor Trevor Taylor Lynath Beckley (Optimus Prime) Crew: Paul Thompson, Shea Ballantyne, Paul Tunnard, Angus McPhee, James Barr, Geoff Woods, Jamie Weeden, Matt Fields, Peter Jones, Brad Best, Jason Taylor, Daniel Taylor This year Optimus Prime will be representing the City of Geraldton in the challenge between the cities and will be pulling out all stops to beat arch rival, Charlotte again this year. He and his crewman Dan are looking forward to the challenge of beating Kraken in this the world’s longest match race! This will be the yachts last Geraldton race for a couple of years as Trevor will be competing in this year’s Sydney to Hobart race. From there Optimus Prime will go to Melbourne for the Geelong week, back to Sydney for the Sydney to Southport race and then the Hamilton Island and Airly Beach regatta’s before heading back west around the top of Australia in March 2013. The yacht will go back to Melbourne, when Trevor and younger son, Daniel will compete in the two handed Melbourne to Osaka race. Quite a hectic schedule for the yacht and crew. This time with a well founded Bakewell 36’ Ian should enjoy his offshore racing a lot more and with the assistance of some of Farrago’s crew, R2D2 should perform well. Following the Bali race, Garth and the crew took the yacht to Darwin where they competed in the Darwin Ambon race breaking the fastest time record. 14 Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2011 REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2011 2011 Supplementary Sailing Instructions Part 1 – GENERAL 1.1 The organizing authority is the South of Perth Yacht Club (Inc.) in conjunction with the Geraldton Yacht Club (Inc.). 1.2 Races will be governed by the rules as defined in the Racing Rules of Sailing, the prescriptions of Yachting Australia, the Notice of Race and sailing instructions of Yachting Western Australia as set out in the Offshore Handbook 2011/2012 and these supplementary sailing instructions. 1.3 In the event of conflict, these supplementary sailing instructions shall prevail. 1.4 Each yacht will be supplied with a Yellowbrick tracker by the organizing authority. Yellow Brick trackers are a rugged and fully self-contained battery operated tracker which works anywhere on Earth. The tracker will wake up every so often (e.g. every 15 minutes), obtain a position using the GPS satellite network, and then transmit that position back to Yellowbrick HQ using the Iridium satellite network in seconds. The message is relayed to us from Iridium, after which we will be able to visualize the positions on an easy-to-use web-based viewer. On the race viewer, visitors to the site will be able to view a display of waypoints, markers and rhum line, historic tracks as well as the current location of the yachts, replay, display of speed and course for each yacht, skipper name and yacht name for each vessel plus the weather information provided via PredictWind. The race viewer will be accessible for the duration of the races north and return on the Club’s website at www.sopyc.com.au. The viewer uses Adobe Flash and will require visitors to the site to have flash installed before it will work. Visitors to the site who do not have flash will be prompted to install it on first visit. The Yellow Brick Yacht trackers are provided courtesy of sponsorship by Hanson Construction Materials Pty Ltd. Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2011 21 REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2011 Who will win the “Challenge of the Cities” City of Fremantle throws out challenge to City of Greater Geraldton Represented by sister ships Charlotte and Optimus Prime, the cities of Fremantle and Greater Geraldton have challenged each other for honours in the Geraldton Ocean Classic. Crews will be sailing not just for individual glory, but also for bragging rights for the city they represent. Look out for their distinctive tee shirts! v Photos from the 2010 Challenge Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic proudly supported by 22 Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic Race Program 2011 REDINK HOMES GERALDTON OCEAN CLASSIC 2011 Behind the Scenes How many people understand what is needed behind the scenes to organise a race like Redink Homes’ Geraldton Ocean Classic? There are a group of highly visible volunteers who actually run the event. Most clubs make sure that these valuable contributors to the sport are formally thanked at briefings and presentations. The oft repeated “we couldn’t race without them” is actually very true and the vast majority of yachtsmen appreciate their efforts. Some, like offshore “Mum” Cherry Callcott, have been involved in the sport for thirty years or so, which might help you to appreciate how passionate they are about their involvement. But what about the invisible people behind them? People like Dr Shane Leavy, who is on standby for the duration of the event to give advice in case of injury. All the information about each crew member is copied to Shane, so that he is armed with essential information about all participants in the race before it starts. This of course, is one of the reasons why it is so important to correctly fill in the details on entry crew lists. People like the dozens of radio operators who give their time to monitor radio traffic between racing yachts and shore bases. In the event of an emergency, they are the front line in the management of the emergency, acting under the direction of the Principal Race Officer and making contact with outside agencies that might be needed. They constantly update the positions of racing yachts so that if an emergency does occur, they know not just where the yacht is, but they also have a good idea of the nearest vessel to it if assistance is needed quickly. People like Paul Kimber at FESA, whose people at the various volunteer sea rescue units along the way silently watch yachts as they race along the coast, ready to assist at a moment’s notice if required. Behind them is a band of volunteer crayfishermen ready to spring into action if needed. People like the Water Police, based at Fremantle, who hope they never hear from us but stand ready to assume control of any emergency that might arise. People like Barrett Communications’ CEO Phil Bradshaw, whose company not only provides state-of-the-art HF radio equipment for the race, but who also supplies his own power yacht Mermaid to anchor at Rottnest Island over two successive weekends, communicating with the fleet as “Tender One”. “Tender One” is the primary communication link between yachts and the race management team. People like the army of trophy donors who provide the funds needed every year to make it possible for the Club to present prizes which are a fitting reward for a race of the significance of the “Gero”. People like the CEO of Redink Homes, Scott Park, who with his marketing guru Terry Evans try their best to gain some leverage from their continuing sponsorship of a race in which they have developed great faith. But perhaps the most surprising of the individuals who work behind the scenes is a man who is not a yachtsman at all, yet gives so much of his time and energy into ensuring the on-going success of the race – the chairman of the organising committee, Phil Warwick. Phil is a powerie (gasp!) who first became involved when he was a Rear Commodore at the South of Perth Yacht Club, and has since that time has continued to lead from the front. There are many, many more that we could include here, but you get the point. For every crew member involved in the Redink Homes Geraldton Ocean Classic, there are probably five or more people behind the scenes who make it possible for them to enjoy their sport at this level. We owe them a debt of gratitude. Bernie Kaaks.
