HONORARY SOLICITOR 3 PRESIDENT’S REPORT The 2014 season has been another successful season for the Club. The club fielded 6 teams, the most of any Club in town, and all performed with distinction, with three teams making the semi-finals and two narrowly missing making the semi final. The highlight of the season was undoubtedly the Makos win in the Premier Colts grade, the last two games being fantastic efforts when they shut out University in the semi in atrocious conditions and then dominated to beat Taieri in the final. This year saw the return of a number of experienced coaches and the introduction of some new coaches. All coaches, managers and support staff performed their duties with skill and enthusiasm. The Club is appreciative of the great work done by these people in ensuring the players receive top coaching, management, fitness training and medical support. We look forward to welcoming back most of these individuals for the 2015 season but are always on the lookout for people willing to help. The atmosphere at the club post match this year has again been most enjoyable. The club is focusing on making Saturday’s after match functions member and family friendly. Our aim is to have the club as the venue of choice for social activities on a Saturday for all members and the presence of Junior Club members and families, and the Phys Ed netball club all adds to the atmosphere and the enjoyment of the occasion. We have regularly had 200 or more people enjoying themselves in the clubrooms post match. The volunteers behind the Bar and in the kitchen (with Betty in charge) have done a wonderful job and made a significant contribution to the Club’s finances. This year we have had a strong committee in terms of numbers and ability. The work load has been able to be spread more evenly as a result. Special thanks to our hard working Chairman Lee Piper. Lee has spent a huge amount of time on Club business and has been responsible for a number of new initiatives. The presence of two Premier players on the committee has helped promote the social activities of the club and importantly enhanced the relationship between committee and players. We farewell a number of players from the Club. We trust you have fond memories of your time here and always look forward to you returning even if it is for a catch up at an after match function. Thank you to everyone for your support during the year and I look forward to seeing you again in the 2015 season. Dennis (Jack) O’Dea President. Once again we have excelled across all of our teams with the performance of the mighty Mako Colts the obvious highlight. Congratulations to Kevin Waldron, Steve Mowat and the management team for a brilliant win. It truly was a great day! For the Premiers it was a tough season. Under new coach Elgan O’Donnell the team got away to a great start, however a horrific run of injuries halfway through the first round halted the progress and it was hard to get the momentum back. That said to make the semi-final and be more than competitive against a Taieri side that had excelled in the competition was a fine effort. I am delighted to be able to confirm that Elgan and Eddie Baker will lead the team in 2015. This coaching combination is without question the leading combination in premier club rugby and I am sure quality players will be attracted to the club in search of advancing their careers. It will also be exciting to see the emergence of some of the Makos into the Premier set up next year. Special mention also to the Tigers who went through to the Junior Colts final and the Hammerheads who were more than competitive in the junior colts division. To Sam Anderson-Heather, Hugh Blake and Trent Renata who were included in the Otago ITM cup side congratulations To Coaches and management of all other teams, thank you so much for all of your efforts. Coaching and managing a team is a very time consuming role and we hope that the players gave you great enjoyment and fun throughout the season. One of the reasons that Dunedin is such a successful club sits with the dedication from you all. Thank you to all of our volunteers and supporters, the game is continually evolving and getting your support remains key for the success of our club. Thank you very much too all members of the club and a special thanks to the DRFC committee. We had 13 members of the committee this year and it is excellent to have such depth in the committee. Also fantastic to have 2 current players in Richard Thompson and Mark Grieve Dunn on the committee and making such a valuable contribution. . The Sharks remain the envy of the rest of the Dunedin clubs. We are successful because I believe that our club continues to remain extremely focused on the players we have and making sure their experience at Shark Park is one that gives them lifelong memories. Finally I wish all members of the club and their families a very merry Xmas and look forward to seeing you all back at the club in 2015. Lee Piper Chairman 5 OBITUARIES It is with deep regret that we record the passing of former players, coaches, managers, members and friends of the club during the past year. Frank Pettit father of Kevin and brother also of Bernie. Jack Skinner’s brother Kevin. Paul Oliver’s brother Frank uncle to Tim. Kevin (Paddy) McLaughlan and Mike Wassell father of Danny. Should we have omitted anyone, we offer our sincere apologies. Mick (Mike) Wassell Club members were shocked to hear of the sudden passing of Mick (Mike) Wassell in October of this year. Mick had a close association with the Club over a long period of time in a number of different roles, and older members recall Mick as being a very skilled, fiercely competitive and an ‘80 minute man’ in his playing days. Mick was schooled at “Christies” and joined the rugby club in 1958. After 3 years playing in the lower grades, Mick made the Seniors (now Premiers) in 1961, and for the next 11 years played at that highest club level notching up over 150 games for the Seniors. His position was flanker. In 1964 Mick was selected for Otago, and over the following 2 years played 8 games for the province (wise heads considered that he was deserving of many more games and that he didn’t really get a fair go. The Seniors were struggling in the lower reaches of the club competition at the time, and this may not have assisted the cause). After his playing days had ended, Mick coached in the Colts grades in the early 1970s, with a good share of successes achieved. In later years, and over a considerable period of time, he was a committed sponsor of the Club through his vehicle repairs business, and also closely followed the exploits of the Club, especially in the years when his son, Danny, played through the grades and at Premier level. Mick is survived by his wife Maureen, 3 daughters and 2 sons, and the Club’s sympathies go out to the Wassell families on his untimely passing. 6 NZ MARIST COLTS TOUR 2014 First thing just want to thank the Dunedin Rugby Club committee for putting my name forward to have the chance to be selected for this team. It was an honour to go and represent the Dunedin Rugby Club. It was an awesome experience travelling around Wellington. We played our first game against a combined Marist Colts team from two Wellington clubs. Then heading down to the south island where we met our second opponent Buller development which was an awesome game and then with a day break before our next game in Nelson where we faced the U19/Development Tasman which was a tough game. Then finally heading back up to the big city Wellington where we played our last game of the tour against Centurion Colts the boys came away with a draw the result we didn't want but the boys gave it everything. In the mix of all that we visited schools in every city/town it was good to get a chance to motivate the younger future players. The thing that made the tour enjoyable was the great bunch of boys selected from around New Zealand and also from other countries like Fiji, Tonga, Australia and Argentina, a great bunch of boys to play with as well. It showed why they got selected with winning 3 games and drawing one game in a time frame of 10 days which was challenging on all our bodies. One highlight of the tour was meeting an old Marist boy and also the coach of New Zealand sevens Sir Gordon Tietjens. Getting to shake his hand and listening to a few inspirational words from a coach who has been around the professional level for many years now. Another highlight was wearing the N.Z Marist jersey for the first time an also representing the Dunedin Sharks! Overall it was a great experience making new friends travelling and playing some good old footy. Tim Tolovae 7 NZ Marist Colts Tour results: Game 1 – NZ Marist Colts vs. HOBM/MSP NZ Marist win 29 : 12 Game 2 – NZ Marist Colts vs. Buller Development Team NZ Marist win 46 : 5 Game 3 – NZ Marist Colts vs. Tasman U19 Colts NZ Marist win 39 : 13 Game 4 – NZ Marist Colts vs. Centurion Colts Draw 27 : 27 KAVANAGH COLLEGE 1st FIFTEEN RUGBY 2014 Kavanagh College 1st15 had an outstanding 2014 year. The team won the local under 18 competition. They played a very strong Dunstan High School 1st 15 in the promotion game and suffered a pretty comprehensive defeat against a very big, powerful & fit team. Unfortunately in the lead up to this game the 1st 15 had 4 forwards, including both starting locks & the No 8 pull out with injury. At full strength they would have been more competitive but realistically would not have beaten Dunstan. Now that both Taieri & Kavanagh 1st15’s are moving up to the Highlanders Grade, the game against Dunstan showed them how much work they need to do on fitness, weights, technique etc The season started in February with the coaches Will Henry & Ant Harris getting the lads together & discussing the season ahead. Pre-season training started at the same time & it soon became apparent that some of the lads had had too many pies over the summer!!! The team ventured to Gore, pretty dodgy place at the best of times, in April to play in the Quadrangular Tournament. They had to play the eventual finalists, Roncalli College & St Kevin’s College on the first day!! The team played very well & only lost to the eventual winners Roncalli 7-0. They finished the tournament on a high with a 20 point win over Verdon College On to the season proper & Kavanagh played Taieri College first game up. Despite the Kavanagh forwards dealing to the Taieri forwards the team came up short losing 10-0, not helped by some pretty average referring. Kavanagh then proceeded to win the next 10 games on the trot including strong wins over King’s High School 2nd 15 & a revenge win out at Taieri. The team came unstuck & lost to OBHS the week before the semi-final. However this turned out to be a master stroke from Will & Ant as they rested several of the starting 15 & used the loss to spur the boys on. Kavanagh then demolished King’s 42-6 in the semi-final before coming from behind with 4 minutes to play to beat Taieri 12-6 in the final The final was a great experience with a couple of hundred vocal spectators urging Kavanagh on. The lads started the game with a stirring haka (can be seen on Facebook) & finished the game with the winning try 4 minutes from full time. Kavanagh thoroughly deserved the win scoring 2 tries to nil in a very close fought encounter. There were some outstanding contributions from some players; however the team as a whole contributed to a winning season. Special mention & thanks must go to the 2 coaches Will Henry & Ant Harris. The improvement by individuals & the team as a whole was down to their meticulous planning & superb coaching. Mention must also go to the manager Bob King & his, Will & Ant’s assistant Chris Ryan. All in all a fabulous season culminating in the side not only winning the under 18 competition but also being promoted back to the Highlanders competition. The icing on the cake is that around 15 or 16 of the lads will be back for next season & so hopefully will both coaches. 8 TROPHY WINNERS - YEAR 2014 McLaughlan Cup For support, loyalty and co-operation to Team and Club Ben Hall Club Captain’s Cup The cup is awarded to the person who in the eyes of the Club Captain and Chairman on behalf of the committee, provide support and assistance to the club in any area. Interestingly Otago has only had three on the national body since 1984 & two of them are from our club. The eight member Board of the Otago Rugby Union includes no less than three of our club members; a record never exceeded by any club. Andrew Rooney, the Chairman, is still active on our Committee, while Doug Harvie is the Immediate Past Chairman and Ross Hanson (a former coach of our Premier side) is the newest member. Club members Chris King, Gareth Evans, Trent Renata & Sam Anderson-Heather playing for the Highlanders in 2014. Three members of the Premier side were selected and played for Otago in 2014 -Trent Renata, Hugh Blake and Sam Anderson-Heather. Hugh Blake is leaving the club and Otago to play in Scotland. Otago (ITM Cup): Sam Anderson-Heather, Hugh Blake and Trent Renata. Hawkes Bay (ITM Cup): Gareth Evans. The 2014 season might best be described as frustrating as injuries hit us at crucial times and stopped the great momentum that we witnessed at the start of the season. After securing maximum points against Taieri, Varsity and Southern the team got a raft of injuries to key players and we stumbled through to the end of the first round. The team showed tremendous heart to win the games we had to win to get us through to the Semi-finals. What was particularly pleasing was our efforts against Alhambra Union and Harbour which became must win matches for us. We were delighted to welcome new players to Shark Park and special mention to Greg Dyer who performed outstandingly well in just his first season out of school. Greg was well rewarded taking away the Otago club player with the most point’s trophy for the year. To Sam Anderson-Heather, Hugh Blake and Trent Renata who were included in the Otago ITM cup side congratulations. To Gareth Evans, well done on a successful year with Hawkes Bay and on securing the Ranfurly Shield. To Trent, Gareth and Sam well done on inclusion with the Highlanders set up for 2015 we know you will serve the club well. Thanks also to Chris King for his tremendous help during the season – Chris showed what an outstanding Shark guy he was to train with the Highlanders and then front at practice twice a week to coach shows how dedicated to the Sharks the “Mule” was. Also thanks to Grunter Devlin and Ed Baker for helping out during the season as well. Thanks to Simon Whelan (Manager) Melanie Reynolds (Medics), Kelly Groot (Physiotherapist). Your help was much appreciated. Finally thanks to everyone at Shark Park for making my first season so enjoyable and for making me and my family very welcome – I look forward to working with Ed Baker and team again for 2015. Merry Christmas to you all. We gathered together a core of about 20 players and hoped that the Prems would be able to feed us some players from their large squad. However, their huge injury toll throughout the season saw us have to draw players from Colts and anywhere else we could. At the end of the season a staggering 66 players had passed through the Prem II ranks, some playing a few games some playing a few minutes. First game of the season was against last year’s champions, Taieri and we gave them a good old fashioned hiding by 41-8. This, however, was to prove the highlight of the season. We played very well on both occasions against the eventual winners University, got robbed by the referee against Southern, got cheated on by Green Island who drafted in players from another club the first time we played them, got a severe payback hiding the second game against Taieri and couldn’t match the size and aggression of Harbour. On the positive side we proved we could play some very good rugby, at times, and did manage to rack up some good wins along the way against Alhambra, Pirates, Green Island and Zingari and we ended up finishing 5th in the competition. A special thanks to the lads from the Makos who came and played for us on a regular basis and it was good to see that you took the experience and knowledge you gained with us back to win the Prem Colts banner. Thanks to Kevin Waldron for his help with players during the season. 15 Some interesting observations on the season… - 4 Eathorne brothers on the paddock at the same time against Green Island (Brendon, Kieran, Nick and Liam). Was Sam Cooper’s cut leg, visually, the worst injury that you have ever seen? Prem’s coach Elgan O’Donnell making his Sharks debut and scoring 11 points for Dunedin and 10 points (2 intercept tries) for the opposition (he was only on the paddock for 40 min) Good to see so many Kavanagh College old-boys turning out again this season. Ex Prem player Simon Luke taking the field against Alhambra Valuable cameo appearances from Rea Cordtz throughout the season. In typical 2BTown fashion, we struggled for numbers in some games, whilst having two spares teams on the side for others. With an age gap of 33 years between our youngest players and our oldest player 2BTown was really a team that has spanned the generations. It was great to catch up with past players who turned up for games when they were back in town visiting. 2BTown has always had a strong link with Kavanagh College, which was evident again this season, in one game out of the 17 players involved 13 were past Kavanagh students and one was a past St Paul’s student. The team base was made up of a mix of players who were at various stages in their rugby careers and there was a good mix of occupations and ages. It was not surprising 2BTown had two Publicans involved in games this year as the majority of our training was at their establishments. The team appreciated the support the Mornington Tavern and Shiel Hill provided both on and off the field. Their support also helped with the recruitment of players. Just to prove that we are not all about old people and old technology we have joined the modern age and taken to social media with our own Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/2btown) to help keep in touch with past, present and potential new players. As we need to keep our playing stocks up, don’t be afraid to recruit in the off season and turn up with friends, families and acquaintances in 2015!! A Big thanks goes out to all those players and supporters who have helped out in various ways during the season 17 Premier Colts (Makos) Squad Members 2014 Jay Barrett, Cameron Bone, Cameron Burrow, Thomas Bleach, Ashley Craig, Jamie Craig, James DeRee, Jason Dobson, Luke Donaldson, Michael Edh, Pofitu(PJ) Fesili, Jordan Hooke, Hugo Ford, Max Goodman, Gifford Henry, Ben Lill, Jag Love, Jackson Muir, Vincent Neumann, Nathan O’Brien, Thomas Pavletich, Morgan Reedy, Leon Pye, Henry Scott, Shaq Solomona, Jared Stanley, Patrick Tomsett, Tala Ulutui, Thomas Van Der Leden, Liam Ward, Benjamin Watson, Guy Woodhouse. A pre–season decision not to enter a Bull’s side in premier colt’s grade enabled the Makos the luxury of having a large squad. This was the correct decision as it allowed the team to have enough players to have constructive trainings all season. The exception was University exam time, which is always a nightmare. Originally 34 players were named in the Makos squad, however by the time the finals arrived 22 fit players were difficult to find. Training runs and warm ups were well organised thanks to Anthony Stadnyk and Steve Mowat. Social events helped build a good culture within the team thanks to Denis McLaughlan and Paddy Bleach. As a whole the management team worked well together. Thanks to Mark GrieveDunn who added some options for the forwards to use, they worked well in the finals. The old saying goes that defence wins championships. How true this was for the Makos this season. From the very first game against University the Makos showed commitment in defence and a will to win. There were some key defenders in this Makos team which set the standard for all players to live up to. As the season progressed no player wanted to be the one who missed the tackle that put pressure back on to the team. This attitude won the competition for the Makos. 18 Season highlights Winning against Varsity (which laid the foundation for the season) Being down 3-19 against Taieri with 30 minutes to go and winning 34-19 scoring 5 classy tries. The semi-final against Varsity. Down 3-5 at halftime. Playing into a huge wind in the second half. Fulltime 8 all. Then 20 minutes of extra time and winning 8-5 after a courageous defensive effort. The Final. The Makos showed a complete dominance. Not allowing Taieri out of their territory in the second half. Everyone in the team would like to thank the club and all the supporters for helping make this a successful year for the Makos Up the Shark’s !!! We had a very large squad whose ambition was to play a good brand of rugby and enjoy them selves. They managed to achieve both of these with ease and despite the fact that we only had 5 practices for the entire season we managed to make the final in our grade only to lose to University Gold who were deserving winners on the day and overall for the season. We managed to give most people adequate game time as fitness levels didn’t really get honed and we pretty much had a revolving door policy to substitutions, sadly in the semi/final we are only allowed to strip 22 players so this lack of fitness reared its head, especially in the final where we didn’t lack for skill but rather the ability to execute due to oxygen deprivation. The Team were an important part of the club and got involved in all activities (some might say too much). We didn’t lack for talent and some of the exploits were brilliant to watch and they never stressed too much about things. We managed to field a team every week and were especially stretched during exams but the boys always pulled through. We would also like to congratulate the Hammers who represented the Club brilliantly in this grade and hope to see them back next year. Finally I would like to thank Roscoe (the slowest jug sculler of Tigers History) in his coaching effort with the Team, Hamish (I went missing for weeks) Ryan on his skills as our manager and our two medics Sarah and Ashley for all your hard work on behalf of the team. We hope that the Tigers of 2014 return to Shark Park en masse and keep continuing to play an important part in the club and more importantly keep playing Rugby. Previous wins for the Hammerheads had been like All Black world cup victory, treasured but rare events. The team certainly celebrated its first win as though it may have been its last, many photos being taken for posterity and proof of victory. We needn’t have got so carried away as we went on to record 6 more and only narrowly missed out on the semi-finals. The Hammerheads were a genuine junior colts side with all participants being in the first year of study or away from school. To a man they were willing and eager to give of their best on a Saturday afternoon, that eagerness translated into some excellent and shall we say some interesting performances. As the season progressed so did the players and several titanic struggles were won by less than a few points which reflected a “never say die” attitude that became a hallmark of the team. Season highlight: In February we had 25 blokes who didn’t know each other or much about the club they had registered to play for. In August we had 25 characters who could call themselves team mates and more importantly SHARKS!!! Ain’t rugby grand? Greg O’Brien 21 Dunedin Junior Rugby Club Report 2014 Season The Junior Club had an Outstanding Year Highlighted with the Under 13 Team being Crowned Dunedin Metropolitan under 13 Champions! Player numbers were up on last season which is pleasing, but we still need to do a lot of work around recruiting for the 2015 Season to make the Junior Club a force to be reckoned with. Team Dinners at the Club on a Saturday night were a huge success with a great turnout by players, parents and siblings and this is something the Junior Club wants to continue next season and improve on. Our Other Teams Results were: Under 11 Whale Sharks 3rd in their Grade, a huge improvement by this team on previous seasons results and they look to build on the platform they laid this season. Under 9 Crocodile Sharks finished 3rd = which is an awesome achievement as at the start of the season we only had 9 players, we ended the season with 17 players which is great for next season, the highlight for this team is having 6 girls in their team and everyone of them improved out of sight. Under 8 Hammerheads 14th, a tough year for this team, but as the season wore on this team improved out of sight, I think next season this team will have a great year. Under 7 Makos 6=, a team of 10 all new to rugby, they competed really well and put some great results together which boosts well for 2015. Under Leopards 2=, A Team that had a great season, some outstanding results and very exciting players, a lot of this team a moving up to under 8 next season so a team to watch, Under 7 Great White Sharks 3rd coached by a super star line up of Sam Anderson-Heather, Sean Smith and Gareth Evans all first time coaches thrown in the deep end with a team of 11 first time rugby players aged 4 to 6, this team had an outstanding team culture and the improvement throughout the season was great to see, all this team is back in under 7s next season so big things are expected! Under 5 Sharks 1st coached by the next all blacks coach Chris McLaughlan, this team entered the under 5 Saturday competition to test themselves against the other under 5 teams and they were no match blowing the opposition teams off the park, this team is moving up to the big stage of under 7s next season so watch this space!! As you can see the Dunedin Junior Club had some outstanding results, these results couldn’t happen without our team coaches and managers who take time out of there busy lives to help coach our junior teams and we thank them for this. I would like to thank the junior committee for all their hard work this season, this committee does a lot of work behind the scenes to make the junior club run smoothly and I thank them for that. We had great support from the Senior Club this Season and we wish to thank them for this the club had a really good buzz about it this season and we hope that continues next year. The financial statements of Dunedin Rugby Football Club Inc. have been prepared according to generally accepted accounting practice. Statement of compliance and basis of preparation The Club is required by its rules to prepare general purpose financial statements. For the purposes of financial reporting, the Club is classified as a public benefit entity. Specific Accounting Policies The following specific accounting policies which materially affect the measurement of financial performance and financial position have been applied: 27 - Accounts receivable are stated at their estimated realisable value. The club qualifies for differential reporting as it is not publicly accountable and it is not large as defined in the framework for differential reporting. The company has taken advantage of all available differential reporting exemptions. Income Subscriptions Membership subscriptions income is recognised as income in the year to which it relates. Grants and donations Grant and donation income is recognised as income when it becomes receivable unless the Club has a liability to repay the grant if the requirements of the grant or donation are not fulfilled. A liability is recognised to the extent that such conditions are unfulfilled at the end of the reporting period. Committee’s Responsibilities for the Financial Statements The Committee is responsible for the preparation of financial statements in accordance with generally accepted accounting practice in New Zealand and that give a true and fair view of the matters to which they relate. In common with other organisations of a similar nature, control over certain items of income and expenditure prior to its being recorded is limited, and there are no practical audit procedures to determine the effect of this limited control. Subject to the possible effect of the limited control referred to in the preceding paragraph, in my opinion, the Statement of Financial Performance and Statement of Financial Position respectively give a true and fair view of the financial position of the Club as at 30 September 2014 and of the result for the year ended on that date.
