Kari Walker, Guidance Center COO, and agency Board Director Carmen McIntyre, MD, visit at a special summer event featuring Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano regarding the need to build a Children’s Advocacy Center in Wayne County. The Guidance Center is working with partners such as Children’s Hospital of Michigan to provide a facility dedicated to the safety of children who are sexually or physically abused. The DownriverCARES AmeriCorps program operated by the agency provides services to the community in the areas of mentoring, literacy, school-based services and therapeutic services Monday through Thursday throughout the year. Each Friday the program performs community service projects around the metropolitan Detroit area. This AmeriCorps member paints part of a mural in the gym at the Aquinas Center. Our mission: To enhance the development and mental well-being of children, adults, families and communities through the delivery of creative, innovative and quality programs. Services will be delivered with excellence and professionalism in an atmosphere of caring, hope and respect. In the 2008-09 year, our agency served more than 19,500 people. The Guidance Center’s early childhood programming touches the lives of thousands of young children each year. Here, children receive free books as part of the Family Fun Nights at the Aquinas Community Resource Center in Southgate. Program and agency highlights As part of a national campaign to show the danger of underage drinking, the SUDDs coalition (Stop Underage Drinking Downriver) produced this special mobile billboard that travelled throughout the community. It appeared at major high school events and was parked at various locations where young people gather. Made possible by a grant from SEMCA, the mobile billboard features the logos of partners OASAS, SUDDs, SEMCA and The Guidance Center. Guidance Center CEO Michael Lott; River Rouge Mayor Michael Bowdler; and Tina Laginess, the director of Community Development for River Rouge, at the ground-breaking ceremony of the new Community Garden at the Walter White Community Resource Center. Guidance Center CEO Michael Lott, Nancy Tuinier, Denise Ilitch and her husband, James Scalici, and Budd Lynch join together at a fund-raiser dinner to benefit agency programs including the Children's Advocacy Center at the Ilitch/Scalici home in Oakland County. The “Swing into Summer” event was a prelude to the 20th Annual Budd Lynch Celebrity Golf Classic.
