DECEMBER 2013 Nuuanu Y Service Club Bulletin CLUB News Thanksgiving Dinner for the Elderly – 2013 By Harold Kuwahara This year’s dinner was another community service project which was successfully completed on November 24. So that I don’t risk missing anyone, I would like to thank all club members, spouses, honorary members, prospective members, other club members and Tina’s hula group who participated. We should also thank all our generous donors and members who contributed salad, cooked rice and “goodies” for all the elderly present. With the generosity of Maurice contributing the photos of this event, truly express the saying, “A picture is worth a thousand words”. Thanks again to all who participated and look forward to next year’s dinner. I also want to wish you and all your loved ones a safe and Happy New Year! Thank you again for all of your hard work and dedication to helping our community in 2013. Look forward to seeing everyone at January’s meeting. Sincerely, Albert Lee 1 2013 / 2014 CALENDAR OF EVENTS DECEMBER DECEMBER 2013 DECEMBER 2013 Nuuanu Y Service Club Bulletin Thanksgiving Dinner for the Elderly – 2013 (continued) 12 Club Christmas Party & Business Meeting, 6:30pm, Hee Hing Restaurant JANUARY 06 Business Meeting 13 Metro District Mtg, Kaimuki, 6pm TBD YMCA Sunday FEBRUARY 03 Business Meeting 07-08 Punahou Carnival Parking Project TBD ASC Dinner MARCH 03 Business Meeting TBD ASC Victory Dinner APRIL 07 Business Meeting TBD Metro District Conference, Nuuanu TBD Healthy Kids Day MAY 05 Business Meeting TBD Book & Bread Sale 30 Hawaii Region Convention TBD Endowment & Induction of New Members -------------------------------------------------METRO DISTRICT Meetings: • • January 13, 2014 6pm, Kaimuki YMCA April 2014 (District Conference) Nuuanu YMCA -------------------------------------------------HAWAII REGION Emphasis DECEMBER REGIONAL FOCUS CHRISTIAN EMPHASIS MARION LIU, RSD Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind 2013 Winter Festival Saturday, December 7, 2013 By Tina Alfred The Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind (HSDB) held it's first ever Winter Festival on December 7, 2013 on the Waikiki campus, bringing together members of the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing community as well as our neighborhood community members in the Waikiki/Kapahulu area. The festival included games for keiki, performances, a student work exhibit, food and brought together over 300 visitors to our school. Yes, it has brought us back for 18 years! We make the trek down King Street from Aala Park to Honolulu Hale giving red and white mint candies to the throngs of people lining both sides of the road. The parade that was once a snake of lights starting from the Board of Water Supply on Beretania Street down Bishop Street, down to King Street to Honolulu Hale has grown yearly -- this year 71 different floats, city and state vehicles, bands and marching units, all decorated to the MAX with lights, tinsel and glitter -- spread Christmas Cheer to thousands of citizens, young, old and "in-between!" This holiday season, Naomi and family--Jennifer, Lance, Deja, Jesus (Takeshi) and Armando, sister Georgia Niimoto (all veterans) were joined by president, Albert Lee and "special elf" Jimmy Ouchi, accompanied Santa's huge float for a mile and a half!! This special festivity, courtesy of "The Parade Man" Nelson Fujio and the late Mayor Fasi is the true "kick-off" to our Honolulu Holidays! At the end of the "rainbow of lights," the tired feet and happy hearts of all participants can partake in a myriad of activities including--food trucks, food booths, games, kiddie rides, first class entertainment, or visiting city Hall and enjoying all of the creatively decorated Christmas trees that fill the bottom floor of the City Hall, and also marveling at the huge, decorated tree that marks the "spot!" We even got to shake hands with Mayor Caldwell in his holiday aloha shirt! With a hearty "ho, ho, ho!" let us thank Ke Akua for another great Y's Men's year and look forward to our next year--hopefully filled with many meaningful activities spreading the spirit of giving and service not only at Christmas but throughout the year! 3 “A MERRY CHRISTMAS DINNER MEETING” DECEMBER 2013 Thursday, December 12, 2013 By Mae Hiranaka “Merry Christmas!” and “Happy Holidays!” could be heard in the cozy special room where three colorful tables decorated with poinsettias, pretty red napkins, holiday treats of boxed Godiva chocolates and candy bars, and baskets filled with sweet “cuties,” greeted the Nuuanu Club members and guests before the December club meeting. President and Special Santa ALBERT LEE presided over the short meeting before the festivities began. As soon as the meeting ended, the busy “elves” of the Hee Hing Restaurant came marching in to start the festivities with platters full of Hee Hing’s delicious Chinese Chicken Salad. Next came the hot imperial scallop soup with egg blossoms. A platter filled with Peking duck in steamed buns plus shrimp chips was followed by some cold ginger chicken. Soon a steaming platter of lychee prawns appeared and a dish of taro basket filled with beef and asparagus was waiting in line. Last but not least the last dish was the Hee Hing special noodles with the soft, noodles in lots of gravy was ono-licious!!! Of course we had some rice and finished this terrific dinner with a bowl of almond float for dessert. Then very talented and energetic NAOMI AIMOTO was ready to lead everyone in singing Christmas Carols and DID WE SING! We ended the songfest with a cute rendition of “We Wish You A Merry Christmas” with endings in several languages…..Filipino, Chinese, Korean, etc. It was a very hilarious and a very happy ending to our Christmas gathering. Members and guests at the Christmas Dinner/Meeting were: KATHY and RANDY AHLO; TINA ALFRED; NAOMI AIMOTO and son, LANCE; ABI and JAMESCHONG; CHERYL DACUS and her friend, CELINE ALLOUCHERY; GARY HIGASHIONNA; MAE and LARRY HIRANAKA; HAROLD KUWAHARA; GLENN MATSUKAWA; GEORGIA NIIMOTO; JAMES OUCHI, MAURICE SHIMONISHI, SUSAN and STEVE WONG; and staff members, TIFFANY UNDEM and ISAAC SAKAMOTO. Special Santa ALBERT LEE brought guests, his brother, DR. MARK LEE, VICTORIA BROWN and ANDREW IEFE, and little VIEO IEFE. A special Mahalo Nui Loa to ABI and JAMES CHONG, ALBERT LEE, MAURICE SHIMONISHI, and MAE and LARRY HIRANAKA for the Christmas treats and gifts. Two surprising things happened that night. One, we will have a new club member in January 2014. CELINE ALLOUCHERY has submitted her application!!! The second is about the 25 strong voices that sang the Christmas Carols. The combined voices of the men and women were very nice and harmonious, and could it be the beginning of a Christmas chorus??? 4 INTERNATIONAL - BROTHER CLUB NEWS FROM OSAKA DECEMBER 2013 5 !!!
