Season`s Greetings Season`s Greetings - SABOX
December 2009 Issue 11 Season's Greetings from all of us at Boxer Club Gold Reef. Wishing all our Boxer friends and their families the most festive of Christmas holidays, filled with fun, food, fluffy toys, frisbees and frolics! With love from the Committee; May, Erna, Maddy, Debbie, Anita, Mani and Chiz BCGR Boxer Chat Christmas Dog Biscuits Zeno and Koko – the wrestling never stops A s you can see from the cover, this is intended to be a fun-filled Bonanza Boxer Christmas issue! And I can give it a kick start with some news from my own household, which is a much happier place than when I last wrote in October, thanks to the introduction of a lovely boy Boxer called Zeno. His breeder, Monique, contacted me only a couple of days after Hugo was put to sleep, she was unaware of what had happened but had just heard that I was in the market for a Boxer... and one of her pups, now 13 months old, had gone to a home where he was very much loved and beautifully cared for, but his master began to suffer from an allergy which became increasingly severe and which, after tests, confirmed that their Boxer (or rather his fur), was the cause. The toddler son also was displaying symptoms if anything worse than his Dad’s and, with another baby on the way, the family had to make the very difficult decision to re home their beloved dog. And so, to cut a long story short, Zeno joined our family and he’s been like a ray of sunshine. We’ve all fallen in love with him, such a sweet disposition and very well mannered (and he has a great sense of humour as well!) and he and Koko, from the moment they set eyes on each other, have been inseparable...their waking hours are spent playing practically non-stop. They make us laugh with their mad racing fits and wrestling, they play hide and seek in the Pampas grass and “mouth wrestle” for hours on end, I don’t know where they get all that energy from, it’s exhausting just watching them! Zeno was an only dog, and by the time we got Koko, Groucho was too old and arthritic to be ‘The Madam’ laying claim to HER sofa! able to play with her, however much he wanted to. So both have a year of “not playing enough” to make up for and boy, are they doing just that! More good news – our 2010 calendar has now been printed and is available for R15 a copy. This year we decided to go for Working Group breeds, which would appeal to a wider audience, but rest assured there are a couple of beautiful Boxers on it! As with last year’s calendar the months extend into the March of the following year, a feature which many people find useful. Well, suffice to say that, with the help of the Boxers, we are going to have a very cheerful Christmas this year, I think some fluffy toys will be in their stockings, as within a month of Zeno’s arrival they have managed to dismember and unstuff every dog toy we had (and there was quite a collection) so a couple of cheap fluffies might provide entertainment for a few hours on Christmas day. Our very best wishes to you all, have a great Christmas break – Chiz and family (both 2- and 4-legged) 2 By making your own dog biscuits your are providing your pet with wholesome food and are assured that you are not feeding them animal by-products of unknown origin. Most of the ingredients can be obtained from Dis-Chem. Look out for dog bone cookie cutters, they are frequently sold in kitchen supply stores. 2 cups wholewheat flour 1/3 cup corn meal 1/2 cup soya flour 1/2 cup ground seeds 1/2 teasp salt 1 tablespoon linseed oil (available in health food stores) 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1/4 cup unsulfured molasses 2 eggs 1/4 cup milk Combine dry ingredients in a bowl and mix. Add the liquid ingredients. Stir, adding more milk if necessary to make a ball that can be kneaded and rolled out on a cutting board. Roll out and cut into cookie shapes, place on a well-greased baking tray, bake 180°C 25-35 mins. or until browned. With a most enjoyable braai plus a glass or two of festive spirit, and gifts for the kids, we had our own little Christmas party, as you can see here. We even had our very own Christmas ‘Angel’ – May’s aptly-named little Pekinese, who looked lovely in her tinsel! Apart from organising the usual shows in 2010, we are hoping to get a more informal event or two together for our members...watch this space! 3 BCGR by Monique Hodgkinson t is amazing how fast time flies! I hope it’s not because I am getting older, although I strongly suspect that this is the case! Two years ago I was invited by the Killarney and District Canine Club to judge Boxers at their 28th Annual Championship Show in Killarney, Ireland on 18th August 2009. I agreed to do the show, and then relaxed and pretty much forgot about it, as the weeks and months passed… All of a sudden I realised that I was leaving in a month’s time and I had not even booked my ticket! Panic set in when I also remembered that I am terrified of flying! Why on earth did I accept this appointment? I invited my sister Michelle to come with me (mostly to hold my hand on takeoff and landing) and she jumped at the chance. So started the planning and packing and organizing and booking and before I knew it I was strapped into a rather small seat on a terrifyingly large plane. Three scary flights later (on progressively smaller and smaller planes) we arrived at Kerry Airport in Ireland and were met by Ronnie Tolson and whisked off in a safe terrestrial mode of transport. I was hoping Ronnie would take us to our hotel as it was a full 24 hours since I had last slept and I was looking rather the worse for wear. But alas, Ronnie had other plans. With a flourish he arrived at the show grounds to introduce me to the committee… Oh brother. Feeling rather uncomfortable, I hung back a bit and was soon reduced to a fit of giggles as Michelle was enthusiastically greeted and welcomed and asked by the secretary if she was looking forward to judging the next day! Yes, well. The next morning dawned bright and sunny… No, not really. As usual for Ireland, it was raining. We were taken to the show grounds by taxi and all the judges gathered in the committee room to sign the never-ending certificates that we would be handing out as this was a graded FCI show where all exhibits are given a rating card after being judged. I noticed some of the more ‘seasoned’ judges amongst us had natty rubber stamps with their signatures on and they were happily plonking these in the appropriate places on the certificates. Need to get one of those! Before I knew it I was standing in the middle of my rather small ring, in my fancy judging clothes, ready to start judging the puppies. The weather had cleared slightly, so I was relieved to be able to get going looking smart and well presented. It was not to last. Within minutes of commencing, the heavens opened. Weather does not stop the Irish, so it did not stop me and I was soon wearing my raincoat and attempting to judge while peering through the steady downpour. So much for my wish to be seen as “the glamorous South African”… the bedraggled, soggy South African was more accurate. Muptar a Lark in the Park with Xandene BOB Jimbren Top Shelf Res BOB I was soon oblivious to the weather as I got down to the very enjoyable task of going over the gorgeous puppies presented to me. And, as expected in Ireland, the weather suddenly cleared and I was shrugging off my raincoat in relief. 2 classes later and the heavens opened again and for the remainder of the show I did the raincoat tango, taking off the raincoat and putting it back on until my ring steward and I were working together like we’d been practicing this maneuver for years. As I awarded Best of Breed the sun came out and remained out for the rest of the day. How typical. Green Star male and Best of Breed was Muptar A Lark In The Park With Xandene, owned by Mr G & Mrs B Morison. A super fawn and white male, with a gorgeous, typical head, expressive eyes, a strong square muzzle, perfect lip placement and a broad correctlyformulated bite. He had excellent balance 4 page 5 BCGR from previous page between fore and hind quarter angulation, a super topline that he maintained on the move; a bang-on tailset, a strong, broad, well-muscled rear and effortless efficient movement, that ultimately won him the top honour of Best of Breed. Green Star female and Reserve Best of Breed was Jimbren Top Shelf, owned by Bj & Sj Groves & Hare. A striking dark brindle bitch, of harmonious proportions and a really top class profile. She had superb shoulder angulation and a lovely elegant neck, with a very pleasing headpiece and correct bite. Correct topline and tailset, with a well angulated rear and well let down hocks. Possessing a very showy character she was a very worthy Reserve Best of Breed winner. The night of the show the club held a super dinner at the hotel we were all staying in and much eating, drinking and good humour resulted. The next day Michelle and I took the The judges seated at the Best in Show ring, with the Abbey in the background train up to Dublin for the rest of the week and all too soon I was strapped yet again into an airplane seat clutching onto her arm. Now all I need to do is work out how to teleport myself to Auckland, New Zealand in November 2010 for another Boxer judging appointment I have accepted! I must be mad…. I found this lovely article posted on the net – someone’s site, American I think, I hope they don’t mind us reading about Daisy! And the photos are from another Boxer lover’s site; they are of Charlie Bear, obviously a much-loved and decorated dog. But it just goes to show that Boxers will be Boxers, worldwide. WE ARE NOT ALONE – Ed. Daisy is as typical a Boxer as you could possibly hope for, cute in a squashed-face, sad-eyed sort of way, incredibly full of energy, and absolutely in love with her people. She is, by and large, a very good doggy. But last Christmas, she was apparently convinced those shiny things on the Christmas tree were Doggy Toys put there for her enjoyment, and the damn dog managed to ruin not one or two of the nice glass balls, but more like one or two dozen of them. Her holiday hi-jinks prompted this post: “There is shredded wrapping paper all over my house, boxes strewn everywhere and gifts tossed willy-nilly all around. There’s a suspicious stain on my living room carpet, the tree looks slightly askew and the dining room table is a mess. The lights and stockings that once hung so nice and straight are crooked and drooping, the pine garland that was wrapped around my banister is hanging drunken-like over the couch and the candles that were on the table are nowhere to be seen. No, it’s not the aftermath of a Christmas party, and it isn’t the day after Christmas. It was just last night. I had some errands to run, plus had to get my nails done for Christmas (what’s the holiday without sparkly red nail polish, right?) and when we came home, Daisy The Christmas Tree Ball Munching Boxer From Hell – she who had denuded the lower third of my tree – had turned into some cyclonic whirlwind of hyperkinetic doggy energy and had somehow: the presents off the dining room table – knocking everything there all * Pulled over. (Most gifts were in the closet – these had just come in from my sister.) said wrapping and boxes apart – spreading the havoc all over the * Chewed lower floors. the contents into the far reaches of the living room, dining room, office * Tossed and kitchen. in her running around – knocked into the tree, pulling more lights * Somehow and the tree askew. Charlie Bear- lights on low * Somehow pawed the stockings that hang on a mantle that is 5 feet above the floor – hello, how in the world???? 5 page 6 BCGR Charlie Bear – lights on high from previous page * Decided the pine garland on the banister needed to be played with and pulled it half off and onto the couch. * Apparently got overly excited – or overly tangled? – and had an accident on the living room floor (that hasn’t happened in a long time.) * And I don’t think I want to know where my candles are, OK? It’s not like she doesn’t get exercised daily. It’s not like she doesn’t get played with and it’s not like she doesn’t have doggy toys! However, she is a 11/2 year old Boxer and I know that means bundle of nearly uncontrollable energy combined with doggy who wants to be named Class Clown. When we got home – she was standing at the top of the steps, wiggling, waggling and “kidney beaning” to beat the band – and looking rather sheepish while she was at it. So, she’s been banished to the dreaded Minimum Security Laundry Room Doggy Penitentiary – Doggyville – until we can get the mess cleaned up and figure out how to better Daisy-proof the house. (She does have the run of the laundry room – which ain’t too tiny – and at least she’s not in the Maximum Security Unit of Doggyville – The Crate.) The bizarre part is this is not her normal behaviour. I really think it’s just that last Christmas, her first, all the Christmas stuff was kept in another room – where she was not allowed (different house – I was able to close off the dining room) and my ex would keep her in the crate all day while we were away at work, and all night while we slept. This year, I can’t close off the stuff, and she’s been having the run of the downstairs area for six months now – she had never taken to the crate, and my ex always had to force her into it, so as soon as she came here – I was leaving the crate open to see what she would do. It wasn’t too long before the crate was abandoned. She has a doggy bed and a favourite spot under a table. Ah, the joys of being owned by a dog. It remains to be seen what this year will bring. I’ve already put up some decorations, but the tree will wait until mid-December. I’m seriously considering simply not decorating the lower three or four feet! And this loverly shot – let’s not discuss how long it took me to unwind her from the maze of guy-lines she had weaved herself through.” It has to be said, though – she’s really a damn good dog, and most of the time, knows her doggy manners very well. 6 BCGR Congratulations to Ch JENTAY Baron Bedazzler Ch.
