2010 - American Boxer Top Twenty
Monday, May 10, 2010 8:00 pm $15.00 WELCOME… Please enjoy the Top Boxers of 2009 with us! 1 CELEBRATE THE TOP BOXERS OF 2009! Thank you for joining us tonight. This is our chance to honor the best Boxers of 2009 and we are so glad that you are a part of the evening. We promise you a night of glamour and beautiful Boxers. The dogs eligible for this competition are the 20 top scoring Boxers compiled from data provided by the American Kennel Club for the period from January 1, 2009 through December 31, 2009. These statistics are based on the number of dogs and bitches defeated with their Best of Breed wins. (Group and Best in Show wins are not counted.) Again this year, you will find the “People’s Choice Award” ballot in your catalog. This gives YOU the chance to evaluate each of these dogs and then to make YOUR choice for the BEST! Fill out your ballot and deposit it in the “People’s Choice Award” box as you leave. We will announce the winner at the ABC Dinner and award the People’s Choice Plaque and Rosette to the winner! Join in the fun and make YOUR choice count. Last year, the People’s Choice voters agreed with the three Top Twenty judges. We’ll see if it happens again this year. Don’t forget to fill in your ballot and deposit it in the ballot box. The three judges for this event were nominated and selected by the Top Twenty Nominating Committee. Part of the excitement is that none of the members of the committee know which judges were elected until tonight! One is an AKC licensed judge (licensed to judge Boxers and at least four other breeds in any Group.) In addition, there is a Breeder judge and a Handler judge. All three judges will score each dog and their scores will be averaged. The winner will be announced at the end of the competition and the signed score sheets will be posted. Chairman Loretta Parolisi and her committee have worked hard to be sure that our top Boxers have the special show that they deserve. The décor, lighting and music was achieved under the careful guidance of Cheryl and Keith Robbins and Marjorie Ross and we are most grateful for their expertise in showcasing the Best of our Boxers! Now……we ask you to celebrate each of these lovely Boxers as they circle the ring and, most of all---Enjoy the Evening! Top Twenty Committee 2 Top Twenty Previous Winners 2009 Ch. Then, the dogs are scored individually by each of the three judges, using the Top Twenty Boxer Point Schedule, which is derived from the Standard. When a judge examines an individual dog and compares it mentally to his or her own picture of the “ideal,” that judge is going through an evaluation process. The Top Twenty Boxer Point Schedule adds the assignment of numerical values to this evaluation and it demands that the judge indicate wherein penalties are assessed for less than the ideal. Since the scores are posted, each judge goes on record, part by part, when they score the dog. This “hands-on” scoring is far more time consuming than the comparison judging that we are used to. After all, these are our Top Twenty Boxers and they are all competing for the top spot! This type of judging exacts strong discipline on the part of each judge. A fault that seems to stand out to one particular judge might not to the others, thereby, reducing the impact of the idiosyncrasies of individual judges. While in the ring, judges may only confer with the stewards regarding judging procedures. 3. The winner will be determined on the basis of the averaged total scores of each dog and the signed score sheets will be publicly posted following the Show. 10 BOXER POINT SCHEDULE FOR TOP TWENTY 1. When the judges first see each dog, they must score it according to an Average Placement Scale of 1 – 10 before it is judged. In other words, the judge must look at the dog on the whole and score it on that scale, with a score of 10 meaning that, as a first impression, the dog appears to be in perfect harmony with the judge’s picture of the “ideal” Boxer. In the event of a tie, this score shall be used as a determining factor to break the tie. 11 ______________ GAIT Front, rear, side (reach & drive).............................................................................................................. 10 Judge's Signature_______________________ TOTAL _______________ ______________ _______________ FOREQUARTERS-HINDQUARTERS Upper arm, legs feet, stifle & metatarsus............................................................................................... 10 CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Alertness, animation, intelligence (reaction to handler and judges)....................................................... 15 .................................................................................................................................................................... DOG # _______ Judging Procedure for the Top Twenty MULTI BREED JUDGE BREEDER JUDGE Larry Sinclair Joyce Campbell, DVM My life in Boxers began in 1961 when my wife, Janet, and I purchased a female puppy as a pet. After encouragement from a Spokane Boxer Club breeder, we received co-ownership of another puppy to show. Am.Can. Ch. Elkrey’s Cha Cha Cha became the foundation bitch of several generations of Box-Sin champions. We also owned and campaigned ABC Sire of Merit, Ch. Salgray’s Royal Flush. In 1979 I was volunteering at Midwest Veterinary Hospital in Midwest City, Oklahoma. In one of the exam rooms sat a very dark brindle Boxer on the end of the table with the owner sitting in a chair beside the table. The owner was Reta J. Crawford of Box Run kennel who was always ready to talk to anyone and everyone about her Boxers. We became friends and partners and worked together until her death in 1991. There have been over 20 champions under the Box Run name and I hesitate to mention the number of Boxers (7) living in my house at the moment. They are a spoiled rotten bunch. I tell them I have to work to feed them. After I became an AKC Licensed All-Breed Handler, our Boxer breeding was reduced. Although I showed many different breeds, I always specialized in Boxers with numerous obtaining their championships under my guidance. Several of the following were successfully campaigned to reach Specialty, Group and Best in Show Wins: Champions Siegel’s Tuesday’s Child, Vimar’s We Believe in Magic, Turo’s Dakota of Shar-Rea, Stamped Ellen’s Alley, Woods End Tenebo Dream Merchant, Jems Pearl Jam and Jems Jack of Diamonds. Upon retiring from handling in 1998, I was approved by the AKC to judge all Working Breeds. In addition, I am now able to judge all Sporting Breeds, Hound Breeds, Bulldogs, Dalmations, Collies and Best in Show. I am a longtime member of the Spokane Boxer Club, a lifetime member of the American Boxer Club and the recipient of the ABC Lifetime Achievement Award. I have also judged Boxer National Club sponsored Specialties in Canada, Mexico, Japan and New Zealand. In 1987, I had the honor of judging the ABC Futurity, Dogs and Intersex at ABC in 2001, Bitches in 2006 and the Regional in 2007. In 1985 I graduated from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine (when I was admitted in 1981 I was the oldest woman every admitted and I believe the only grandmother). I have been actively pursuing Boxer health since 1979. Over the years Box Run has had health problems in every area and each has been devastating. I am an active member of Boxer Club of Oklahoma, American Boxer Club, Tulsa Boxer Rescue, Seminole Kennel Club and Tulsa Dog Training Club. I have judged sweepstakes in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas. Words cannot express my delight, honor and amazement at being chosen as the Breeder Judge for the Top Twenty. I know we are all going to have a wonderful evening. Judging this Top Twenty completes that circle. 12 13 HANDLER JUDGE Marianne "Tuni" Claflin I am honored and excited to have been invited to judge at this year’s ABC Top Twenty event. My involvement in the Boxer breed began with my sister, Beth Coviello-Davis, Belco Boxers, at the age of 6. While a junior handler, I finished my first Boxer, Asia, who helped me to be a top junior showmanship contender. This early involvement has guided me to an amazing career as a professional handler and member of the AKC Registar Handlers Program. This path has brought to me wonderful friendships and many dogs that have touched my life. Some of my career highlights have included several Best in Show winners, Westminster Best of Breed winners and Group placers, National Speciality winners and Top 20 winners in respective breeds. I now appreciate what you do as breeders, as I currently breed Akitas and Whippets under the Solevita kennel name with the love of my life, Louis Ruediger. I have had the pleasure of exhibiting at the ABC, everything from Best in Futurity winners to Top Twenty contenders. All the support from the Boxer fanciers has given me the most respect for all that is involved in qualifying for the ABC Top 20. Congratulations to all the breeders, owners and handlers of the Top 20 Event! SHARLEDAR’S CROWN JEWEL “Ruby” Ruby thrilled us again in 2009, qualifying for the TOP TWENTY competition for the second year. She finished 2009 ranked # 4 Boxer, and # 2 Boxer bitch (Breed points), winning multiple Best in Specialty shows, several Group firsts, and numerous Group placements along the way. By being ranked in the top five Boxers, she also garnered us an invitation to participate in Westminster, which was a huge honor for us. Ruby’s smooth effortless gait, pretty feminine headpiece, and showboat attitude, won her the admiration of some of the most respected Boxer and All-Breed judges. To these judges and, to her handler Tami Mishler, we wish to extend our heartfelt gratitude for recognizing her wonderful qualities and believing in our “Ruby girl”. We hope that Ruby is an inspiration to our sport, and to other exhibitors--- that with a great dog and handler, even ordinary, everyday folk can sometimes make it to the top. WINFALL I DREAM OF STYLE “Macey” It’s rare that a Boxer bitch leaves such an ‘indelible’ stain on dog show history as our Macey has done, without the benefit of incessant advertisements and 'cultivating the right judges and shows’ to launch her career. With help from Jorge, we’ve been blessed to observe Macey gradually blossoming into that lovely ideal of a ‘Working Girl’ with boundless prospect. Undefeated in regular class competition, Macey fulfilled her American Championship requirements in short order, in 8 consecutive shows (1½ weeks, to be exact.) Winning large breeds and very competitive group placements from the classes with such ease, we were faced with considering Macey’s ability to vault yet another ‘Winfall’ Boxer into tonight’s roster of Top 20 Competitors. Our ‘Dream’ for Macey was realized with grand ‘Style’ in the delicate charge of her handler, Jorge. In under 2 months campaigning in the US, they’d already won their first Best In Show together, and finished 2009 ranked in the top 15 Boxers (all-breed & breed systems,) all from attending their local shows. Only 11 weekends out competing as a ‘Special’ in 2009, Macey has since garnered; 21 Bests of Breed, 7 Working Group Ones (among 17 total group placements), as well as BIS Honors. Thank you all for sharing this night and one of their ‘animated performances’ that embody our “DREAM OF STYLE”!!! LATTALANE’S KISS ME I’M IRISH “Mia” Prepare to be “kissed” as LattaLane Boxers once again proudly presents “Mia,” a stunning Top Twenty contender in the highly capable hands of her best friend, Lori McClain. On St. Patrick’s Day, just four years ago, we were presented with a beautiful litter sired by Ch. TuRo’s Overture SOM (ABC Winner’s Dog 2004) out of our Ch. LattaLane’s Cover Story DOM. At 8 weeks of age, one brindle puppy girl demanded the attention of all, and in the 4 years since has continued with a dominating ring presence matched by few others in the breed! She captivated many judges and fellow breeders alike with her solid effortless movement, beautiful type and presence. In a remarkable two year specials career, she accumulated 89 Best of Breed wins (including 11 BISS wins), 48 Group Placements (including 17 Group 1 wins), Best of Opposite Sex at the 2008 ABC Regional, Award of Merit at the 2009 ABC National, and an All Breed Best in Show win! Mia finished both years as the #4 Boxer Bitch in breed rankings. This evening, we want to thank so many of you who have supported Mia throughout her exciting specials career. It is such an honor and a thrill to be participating in this event. When we brought Jackson home at 7 months, Dan told us that he thought this boy was special, and SPECIAL he is –- whether he is performing in the ring or in the living room. He is a beautiful Boxer of classic breed type with a perfect blend of substance and elegance. He is such a joy to watch in the ring with his solid top-line and smooth, effortless movement --- always with his best friend Dan Buchwald at the lead. Jackson is a multiple Group and Specialty winner, defeating some of the toughest East Coast competition --- both in Breed and at Group level. We would like to thank all of the judges who recognized his great qualities and helped make this moment a reality. His 2nd major and finishing points were taken with a professional handler. "Lucas" started his Specials career in July of 2009 and in a few short months, he had made his way into the hearts of many. He was awarded many Best of Breeds, several Group placements, and finished 2009 in the Top 20, garnering a ticket to the prestigious event to be held at ABC in 2010. "Lucas" started 2010 taking back-to-back Group wins in January. In addition to his stellar conformation and showmanship, "Lucas" is also health tested and heart cleared via Holter and Doppler, has been OFAed, is Thyroid normal, and is ARVC DNA negative. “Lucas” has lived up to all of my expectations and then some. He is an outstanding show dog and an extraordinary friend. I couldn’t have asked for more! KIM'S AMAZING GRACE CUSTOM MADE “Gracie” At eighteen months of age, Gracie entered the show world. B.J. Barnhart worked with Gracie just a few days before being shown. She had been entered in the Brooksville shows in January 2009. To my surprise, she went "Best of Winners" with Pino during that week! Gracie continued to show well over the following months, and in May of 2009 was awarded "Reserve Winners Bitch" at ABC. She finished her championship in June with Kay Palade-Peiser, taking a "Group First". Shortly after, she began her specials career with Kay. To date, Gracie has multiple BOBs, Group Firsts, Group Placements, as well as Specialty Show awards. In December, Gracie went "Best of Opposite" at the Eukanuba National Championship. A big thanks to Kay Palade-Peiser for her expert handling of Gracie, and to all of the wonderful judges that recognized Grace's outstanding qualities, which led to her becoming a Top Twenty competitor. The lyrics seemed perfect for this beautiful puppy. "And she’s everything I ever wanted. And everything I need. I talk about her; I go on, and on, and on. Cause she’s everything to me." At the urging of a friend, we sent Paisley out to Special with Tessie Savage. The first day out together they garnered a Best in Specialty Show. “Our Dream Had Started!” Over the next 11 months, Paisley and Tess proved to be the ultimate team. CAPRI’S MAGIC MAKER OF SASSY “Dante” “Dante” exemplifies breed type --- medium size, short-back square body with a magnificent head. He is a true Boxer. At the young age of 12 months “Dante” won Winners Dog & Best of Winners at the 2006 American Boxer Club National Specialty under Breeder-Judge Mrs. Monika Pinsker, making him a new champion. At the same National, “Dante” was one of the get where his sire (Ch. Capri’s Woods End Spellcaster, SOM) won the Stud Dog Class and who went on to become the 2006 American Boxer Club National Specialty Best of Breed Winner. “Dante” was handled to these wins by Diego and Evelyn Garcia. Beginning at 6 months of age, “Dante” has had an impressive show career: 2009 – Dog Winning Most Best In Specialty Wins Multiple All Breed Best In Show Winner Multiply Best In Specialty Show Winner 2009 Westminster Kennel Club, Best Opposite Sex 2008 ABC National Specialty, Award of Merit 2007 ABC National Specialty, Award of Merit 2007 Westminster Kennel Club, Award of Merit 2006 ABC National Specialty, Winners Dog/Best of Winners 2005 ABC Regional Specialty, Reserve Winners Dog/Best Puppy “Dante” was campaigned by friend and handler Gary Steele whose remarkable conditioning, training and handling skills created an amazing team. ECHO’S MAGIC MAN AT MAXL “Holden” ”Holden’s” love of life, love of his friends and family, and love of the show has been evident from the start. Always making sure everyone knows he is “in the house,” Holden demands the attention of everyone around him. His clownish Boxer boy temperament, excellent show presence, soundness and true Boxer type have made him the contender that he has become. Shown 15 times total in the classes, he received his first major at 8 ½ months old, going RWD the other days learning to keep 4 feet on the floor! He finished by going Winners Dog in 3 consecutive shows at the Houston Reliant Park Shows for 3 point, 4 point and 5 point majors, respectively, including Best of Winners at the Blue Bonnet Boxer Club Specialty. Our appreciation to all of the judges who have rewarded “Holden” with the many Group, Breed and Specialty wins. Our utmost gratitude to Carmen Skinner for starting “Holden” out in the East on his winning “trek” and for her “flair” with him that never went unnoticed. And to Cindy Crawford-Gorath who has continued to let him shine on the West Coast, with her “special touch” and the loving care she and her family give him. It means so much to us. At last year’s American Boxer Club Danny at the tender age of 15 months garnered an Award of Merit in a very strong Specials class. His first Breed as a Special resulted in a Group 1 and he earned his way into this year’s Top Twenty in only 4 months at the end of 2009. Danny also won the Bred by Exhibitor Group at the Eukanuba Show this past December in Long Beach. For me Danny is very special in another way and I am proud to say that I am Danny’s co breeder along with Gayann Jones, I am handler, and I am his owner along with Roberto Bezerra, Richard Servetnick, Barbara Bachman, my father Gary Steele and Gayann Jones. One look at his beautiful dark eyes and I knew, at that moment, that my year’s long search for perfection was over. Leonidas finished at 14 months of age with two back-to-back majors. In 2009, and only 8 months as a special (shown only in selected shows) he was awarded multiple BISS, Group Placements, 2009 ABC Regional AOM and All Breed BIS. SABO'S MAJESTIC PROVOCATION “Adam” When I was a child, my father raised and worked with Clydesdale horses. He had a beautiful golden fawn with a mane almost the color of golden wheat. My father named him “Golden Boy.” Lori McClain showed our special, CH. Sabo’s Sweet Sensation (Callie) who was a top 10 Boxer in 2006. Lori offered her CH. Maxl’s Golden Boy “Conner” when we looked for a stud for Callie. I felt providence in the Golden Boy connection, and we bred Callie to Conner. From that breeding came “Adam,” CH. Sabo’s Majestic Provocation. Adam has certainly lived up to all our expectations as a majestic Champion, receiving many accolades including multiple Best in Show, Best in Specialty, Best of Breed, and Group placements. When Adam is in the ring, he demands being seen. His presence, stature, confirmation and movement, is a true testament to the boxer standard. And if that’s not enough, one well known judge said, “Imagine a boxer with real muscles!” Our special thanks and gratitude go to Danny and Vanessa Sanchez who have professionally and proudly cared for Adam and have brought out all of Adam’s potential in the ring. RUMMER RUN’S BRIGADIER “Briggs” Briggs is not appearing in this year’s Top Twenty because he has retired from his show career and is now living with a wonderful family in Atlanta who also have another of our retired champions, Ch. Rummer Run’s CoCo Chanelle. The two dogs love playing in a huge fenced yard and riding around on a personalized golf cart when not lounging in the house. Briggs had a successful Specials career ending as the #9 Boxer in Breed points and #12 Boxer in All-Breed points. Briggs has a lovely disposition. He always ate well, traveled well, was never dog aggressive and, as Rick always said, he was “a very easy keeper.” He has a showy pedigree and has been collected.
