Monday, May 7, 2012 8:00 p.m. $15.00 2012 American Boxer Top 20 A Non Profit Corporation Committee Chairman --- Loretta Parolisi Wendy Morawski – Nominating Committee Chairman Sharon Fosseen --- Secretary/Treasurer Sharon Steckler --- Legal Counsel Honorary Committee Members Linda Huffman James Kilman Margaret Krey Eleanor Linderholm-Wood (deceased) Pedigree Updates and Research Larry Dosier WELCOME… Please enjoy the Top Boxers of 2011 with us! 1 Join us to celebrate the top Boxers of 2011! This evening we are celebrating the top Boxers of 2011. The glamour of tonight is a fitting tribute to these Boxers. Again this year we are fortunate enough to have some of our past Top Twenty winners and that is always a joy to all. Boxers eligible for this competition are the 20 topscoring Boxers compiled from data provided by AKC for the period from January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011. These statistics are based on the number of dogs and bitches defeated with their Best of Breed wins. (Group and Best in Show wins are not counted.) Also, again this year, we were delighted to have Larry Dosier provide updated pedigrees all formatted in a uniform manner and we thank him for this monumental effort! 2011 Top Twenty Winner GCH R AND G’S MYSTICAL DANCER “Danny” Again this year, you will find the “People’s Choice Award” ballot in your catalog which gives YOU the chance to evaluate each of these dogs and then to make YOUR choice for the BEST! Fill out your ballot and deposit it in the “People’s Choice Award” box as you leave. The winner will be announced at the ABC Awards Dinner and will receive the People’s Choice Rosette and plaque. Join the fun and make YOUR choice count by filling out your ballot and depositing it in the ballot box as you leave. The three judges for this event were nominated and selected by the Top Twenty Nominating Committee, chaired by Wendy Morawski, in a secret election. Part of the excitement is that none of the committee members know which judges were elected until tonight! All three judges will score each dog and their scores will be averaged. The winner will be announced at the end of the competition tonight and the signed score sheets will be posted. Chairman Loretta Parolisi and her committee have worked hard to ensure that our top Boxers have the special show that they deserve and we are most grateful for their expertise in showcasing the Best of our Boxers! Now--celebrate each of these lovely Boxers as they circle the ring and, most of all---Enjoy the Evening! Then, the dogs are scored individually by each of the three judges, using the Top Twenty Boxer Point Schedule, which is derived from the Standard. When a judge examines an individual dog and compares it mentally to his or her own picture of the “ideal,” that judge is going through an evaluation process. The Top Twenty Boxer Point Schedule adds the assignment of numerical values to this evaluation and it demands that the judge indicate wherein penalties are assessed for less than the ideal. Since the scores are posted, each judge goes on record, part by part, when they score the dog. This “hands-on” scoring is far more time consuming than the comparison judging that we are used to. After all, these are our Top Twenty Boxers and they are all competing for the top spot! This type of judging exacts strong discipline on the part of each judge. A fault that seems to stand out to one particular judge might not to the others, thereby, reducing the impact of the idiosyncrasies of individual judges. While in the ring, judges may only confer with the stewards regarding judging procedures. 3. The winner will be determined on the basis of the averaged total scores of each dog and the signed score sheets will be publicly posted following the Show. 14 15 ______________ GAIT Front, rear, side (reach & drive).............................................................................................................. 10 Judge's Signature_______________________ TOTAL _______________ ______________ _______________ FOREQUARTERS-HINDQUARTERS Upper arm, legs feet, stifle & metatarsus............................................................................................... 10 CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Alertness, animation, intelligence (reaction to handler and judges)....................................................... 15 .................................................................................................................................................................... This score is to be used in case of tie ONLY. BOXER POINT SCHEDULE FOR TOP TWENTY 1. When the judges first see each dog, they must score it according to an Average Placement Scale of 1 – 10 before it is judged. In other words, the judge must look at the dog on the whole and score it on that scale, with a score of 10 meaning that, as a first impression, the dog appears to be in perfect harmony with the judge’s picture of the “ideal” Boxer. In the event of a tie, this score shall be used as a determining factor to break the tie. DOG # _______ Judging Procedure for the Top Twenty MULTI BREED JUDGE BREEDER JUDGE Howard “Butch” Engel Jane Hamilburg-Guy Growing up in a large family (parents and seven children), a Boxer was always the dog of choice. I acquired my first personal Boxer in 1978, did some basic obedience and with the assistance of Mal Adcock of Seedskidee Boxers attempted to start a breeding program. That didn’t work out well so a few months later I acquired a 6 month-old brindle bitch as a show prospect from Adcock. Kahlua never liked the shows but instilled my life-long love of this breed. I consider myself to be one of the luckiest people alive to have not only been born into a dog show family, but one of the most famous in Boxer history: Salgray Boxers. My parents were Phyllis and Dan Hamilburg, who founded the Salgray line and who instilled in me the love of our wonderful breed. I was fortunate to grow up in the 50’s and 60’s and to see some of the very finest Boxers of that time. One of my most memorable and thrilling moments came when, as a teenager, I handled my “Bucky” (later to become CH. Salgray’s Buckeroo) to the Grand Prize Futurity win in 1970. This was extra special to me as I had raised this dog as an orphan pup and trained him entirely on my own. Over the last 30+ years I’ve had the pleasure of owning and/or breeding over 30 champion Boxers including 2 DOM and one SOM. When Pat Healy, my wife, and I got together in the late 80’s, she took over handling our dogs. We both had previously been involved in Dobermans and I had dabbled in Beagles. I currently am a life member of the Greeley Kennel Club, the Boxer Club of Colorado, and the American Boxer Club.. I also belong to the Evergreen Colorado Kennel Club, Rocky Mountain Beagle Club, and am the coordinator of the Colorado Judges Workshop. I’m currently approved to judge Boxers, Beagles, Dobes, and Newfoundlands, with permit status in Afghan Hounds, Alaskan Malamutes, Great Danes and Rottweilers. In 1978 I began operating a boarding kennel with my husband Ray. This, and a family with four daughters took up all my time and I was not able to attend many shows. However, I did help my parents continue to breed their Boxers and many of their retired specials came back to live with me and my family. During the 80’s and 90’s I owned, co-owned or bred a number of champions including CH. Salgray’s Call Me Madam, CH. Salgray’s Black Tie, CH. Salgray’s Retaliation and CH. Salgray’s Isabella. In more recent years, I am proud to have added CH. Salgray’s Arabian Knight, CH. Salgray’s Beat the Street and CH. Salgray’s Remington to bring the total of Salgray champions to number 95. We have always been supporters of owner/handlers and have twice won the Charlotte Brayshaw award that is given to the bitch with the most Bred by Exhibitor wins. Pat and I have taken over sponsorship of this award as we believe this is an important facet of the ABC awards to honor a breeder/owner/handler. I am honored to be the multi-breed Judge for this year’s Top 20. Over the years I have been honored to judge several sweepstakes for Rhode Island, New York and Long Island Boxer Clubs. I am also a Life member of the American Boxer Club and grateful to share the love of Boxers with so many wonderful people I have met through the years. I can honestly say I am thrilled to have been asked to judge the Top Twenty and be able to see so many beautiful representatives of our amazing Boxer breed. 16 17 HANDLER JUDGE Michelle Pinsker Yeadon Michelle, along with her husband Peter and parents Walter and Monika Pinsker are owners of Mephisto Boxer Kennels, established in 1968. Michelle was born and raised into the sport of purebred dogs and in particular the Boxer! Michelle has been a part of the breeding and exhibiting of their Boxers for almost 30 years. She has piloted many of Canada's Top Dogs and has won over 200 best in shows from all 7 groups. She has handled dogs all over Canada, the United States, Japan, and Bermuda. Her biggest accomplishments have been ranking in Canada's Top Ten All breeds four years in a row, with father and then son, Am.Can.Ch. Mephisto's Rosenkavalier and Am.Can.Jap.Ch. Mephisto's Guns and Roses. She has finished countless Boxers in Canada and the US, bred by the family and her many clients. Michelle is a member of the Professional Handlers Association of America as well as a member and West Coast Director for the Canadian Professional Handlers Association. 18 CONTENDERS 19 2011 American Boxer Top Twenty Conformation Scores from January 1– December 31, 2011 * Denotes past Top Twenty Winner BOB wins Dogs Defeated *1.GCh R and G’s Mystical Dancer 131 3600 *2.GCh Winfall Brookwood Styled Dream 123 3544 3. For us “The Recruit” has been that dog. When we saw him as a very young puppy we knew that he was going to be exciting at home and in the ring. We have been showing Boxers for many years with many champions, but knowing we might not get another boy this nice, we limited his shows in the classes. He was awarded his first BOB from the 6-9 month puppy class over specials. He received his championship with back-to-back BOBs in April 2011 at 16 months of age. Two months later he entered the Top Twenty and also completed his Grand Champion points. With some pretty heavy-hitters in the ring, he has won BISS and many Group placements. We are very proud of this young dog’s (two years old) achievements in such a short time as a special. We take this opportunity to give a very grateful “thank you” to Carmen Ruby for her devotion and superb handling of “The Recruit.” They are an impressive twosome in the ring. We appreciate the judges who have recognized his many outstanding Boxer qualities---topline, movement, gait and his ring presence. He is a joy and we will forever be grateful to Mahogany Boxers’ LuAnn and Dave Gardner for entrusting Winston to us. Although we had not planned on being part of the show world, the Gardners helped us understand the potential Winston had and he has fulfilled his promise and brought us here tonight. We are honored to be in the company of the other contenders and fellow Boxer lovers. From the start, Winston was a natural in the show ring. In his first summer, he won two best puppy competitions and a Puppy Group 2. In three days of showing at the 2009 ABC Regional, he won the 9-12 month puppy class twice and placed second the third day. Winston won back-to-back majors in February 2010 and finished a month later with a 4-point major at 16 months. Winston’s 2011 performance was extraordinary. He began the year winning BOB in nine of his first 10 shows including two Specialty Shows along with Group 1 and 3. Despite limited showing – Winston split Kim’s handling time with his half-sister Molly (also a contender tonight) for a good part of the year – Winston was a fixture in the Top Twenty standings all year. We thank the many judges who have recognized Winston’s fine qualities and helped make this evening a reality. We extend out deep appreciation to Debbie Struff for finishing him and Kim Pastella Calvacca who took him to new heights during 2011 as a Grand Champion and Top Twenty Boxer. He had a long and slow rehab but he made an amazing recovery. After several months of careful loving care, his effortless stride was back. Jackson had been out of the ring nearly a year when we entered him in a local show in January of 2011 – “Just for fun!” He won the Breed the second day! He responded beautifully to the expert handling of Carlos Puig, and they teamed up in April to pursue his Grand Championship. Shortly after achieving his GCH, Jackson was ranked and the fun continued. He had multiple Group placements and Specialty wins, including our own Michigan Boxer Club. We are so proud of Jackson and thrilled to be participating in the Top 20. Thank you to all of the judges who recognized his great qualities and gave him the nod. Our biggest thank you goes to Carlos who brought out the best in Jackson and made him shine in the ring. They were so much fun to watch. MAHOGANY’S MI OWN SWEET TIME “Molly” We are thrilled to have Molly competing in the Top 20 for the second consecutive year. Last year was a wonderful year in the Show Ring for Molly, becoming a Top 20 contender in just 8 weekends of shows with Kim. She is a natural. A stunning example of a proud, elegant dog who moves effortlessly around the ring, always catching the judge’s eye. As with most Boxers, Molly is so much more than a show dog. She always wants to please and will do anything we ask of her. She is always alert and full of life. Molly is first up in the morning and last to bed. She is loyal, sweet, welcoming and energetic, always eager for a game of “tug” or one-sided fetch and daring anyone to touch her prized Jolly Ball. A comic, she never fails to make us laugh at her antics. Molly is a breeder’s Dream Come True and OUR best friend as well as the perfect companion sleeping by our side every night. Molly’s 2011 highlights include: Best in Show at the Holyoke Kennel Club Best in Specialty Show at the New Jersey Boxer Club 4-day BOB Sweep and G1 at the Greater Lowell & Merrimack Valley KCs 3-day BOB Sweep at the Wilmington & Penn Kennel Clubs 3-day BOB Sweep at the Ladies & Eastern Dog Clubs 3-day BOB and a G1 at the Yankee Classic We would like to extend our sincere thanks, at this time, to the judges who recognized Molly’s qualities and to Kim for continuing with Molly for a second year while rocketing her half-brother Winston into the Top 20. Being a standout jewel from her litter made finishing her as an owner-handler possible, our first fully owner handled champion. Our exciting journey began at 2010 ABC by winning Futurity Best Puppy and Reserve Winners from the 6-9 class, wonderfully shown by Diego Garcia (Judges Clifford Steele & Tom Perret, respectively). We knew Crystal was special. Both judges and onlookers alike noticed her obvious qualities: effortless movement; lovely expression; and elegant, square body. We soon realized she could aspire to more than we originally planned. To ensure she reached her potential, we entrusted Crystal to the very capable hands of Handler Wendy Bettis. Last year just weeks after earning her Championship, Crystal entered the 2011 Nationals ring with her new handler, surrounded by top ranking Boxers/champions. We were ecstatic when Judge Shirley Bell awarded her Select Bitch, with so many lovely boxers in contention. In just over 8 months, Crystal ended 2011 ranked #10 in breed with the following highlights: • • • • 33 Breed wins Numerous Group 1 wins and Group placements Several Best in Specialty wins #11 Boxer-All-Breed Crystal is off to a great start for 2012, winning Best In Specialty under breeder judge Janet Sinclair. We’ll start 2012 ABC with Crystal in the ring at the prestigious Top Twenty! What an honor! We look forward to what the year has in store. We would like to thank all the judges who have awarded Crystal her wins/placements. His outstanding head and bite, flawless movement as well as his strength, balance and correct angulation and rear make him a Boxer in every sense of the word. These qualities have been recognized and rewarded by breeder judges and those who appreciate proper structure. This year at the Regional series, Rohan won Best Opposite Sex four out of five days in a huge specials ring, losing the Best of Breed nod only to the top-winning bitch of all time. His daughter was Winners Bitch one of the days, as well. He is proving his ability as a stud dog. Since he is only getting better with age, we will continue to selectively show him and would like to thank all of the judges and breeders who awarded him recognition. CONQUEST’S-ROSEND’S NEW KID IN TOWN “Riley” To paraphrase a line from a popular motion picture of more than a few years ago-- puppies are “like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna’ get.” It didn’t take long for us to realize that with Riley, we were certainly getting something special! In his first show, at six months of age, Riley was awarded WD/BOW for a five-point major. Unabashed at his early success, Riley took to the show ring like a star, finishing at just nine months of age, including 2 Allbreed Best Puppy in Shows. What an exciting ride from such a young boy. Little did we realize that the adventure had just begun! Riley took on the best and achieved his Grand Championship at 12 months of age. He then went on to take California by storm, achieving the following in 2011: Multiple Best in Shows #4 Boxer All Breed Top 20 Working Dog #9 Boxer Riley has given us a wonderful and glorious ride in 2011. It is with chests bursting with pride that we present this beautiful young Boxer as a Top 20 Contender. We are thankful to all of those judges who shared our belief that Riley is truly something special. We wish to thank Kimberlie Steele-Gamero for Riley’s short, but sweet, spectacular class career. However, Riley achieved his placement in this year’s Top 20 and his extraordinary Specials career under the expertise and guidance of his exceptional handler, Cheryl Cates. Her faith in him and her skill with this very young Boxer has been essential to his success. A mere “thank you” to Cheryl doesn’t come close to expressing our sincere appreciation for her leading “Team Riley” on this wonderfully fantastic journey!
