2006 - American Boxer Top Twenty
Monday, May 8, 2006 8:00 pm $15.00 American Boxer Top Twenty Welcome to the Eighteenth Annual Top Twenty Competition! Dogs eligible for this competition are the best of our Breed. They are selected on the basis of the number of dogs and bitches that they have defeated in their Best of Breed wins. Group and Best in Show wins are not counted. The statistics come directly from the American Kennel Club and include all wins from January 1, 2005 through December 31, 2005. The judges for this event are selected by the Top Twenty Committee members. Members of the Top Twenty Committee who are either the owner or breeder of a dog in competition are ineligible to nominate or vote for the judges. The identity of the judges is not revealed until the evening of the competition. There are three judges: an AKC licensed judge, licensed to judge Boxers and at least four other breeds in any Group; a breeder or breeder judge; and a handler. This year, the winner will be announced at the conclusion of competition. We should all support our Top Twenty Competition as it adds prestige to our breed. We should also be proud of these dogs and bitches as a lot of “blood, sweat and tears” is involved in “making the Top 20.” They are truly the best of our Breed! We would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who have worked hard to make this event a success and look forward to seeing you all again this year. Also, the Top Twenty Committee would like to express their most sincere thanks and appreciation to Bobbie Wagner, whose hard work and expertise help put the finishing touches on our Gala Evening. The Top 20 Winner Prizes offered by Purina include: Coupons for 150 lbs. of any Purina Dog Food Purina, Chosen by Champions, Duffel Bag 1 AMERICAN BOXER TOP TWENTY COMMITTEE MEMBERS 2006 David Abraham Margaret Archibald Christine Baum Win Bitler Diane Boyle Paul Caillaud Deborah Clark John Connolly James Eden Sharon Fosseen Zona Grupe Linda Huffman Jack Ireland Verena Jaeger James Kilman Bruce Korson Margaret Krey Eleanor Linderholm-Wood Vera MacIntyre Wendy June Morawski Carol Nesbitt Bob Oliver Loretta Parolisi Keith Robbins Frank Rouse Tina Truesdale Bobbi Wagner Lynda Yon 2 The Jeanne Von Boecklin Korson Memorial Trophy The Jeanne Von Boecklin Korson Memorial Trophy, crystal mounted on a black marble base, will be presented to the Top Twenty Winner. Each dog will be scored by each judge individually, using a Scale of Points from the Standard. 2. The winner will be determined on the basis of the total score of each dog. 3. In the event of a tie, it shall be broken by using “Average Placement” (i.e. on a scale of 1-10) marked by each judge prior to the marking of the score sheet, as the determining factor. Above are the simple ground rules that will be followed for the judging of this exciting event. The rationale for this system is as follows: Whenever a judge examines an individual dog and compares him, mentally, to the judge’s picture of the ideal, the judge is going through the work of judging by scoring. The scoring system adds the assignment of numerical values to the main factors of the judging, and it demands that the judge indicate wherein he penalizes for less than ideal characteristics. The judge must go on record when he scores. And more, he must go on record part by part. He must also indicate the degree of deviation in the part from the ideal. He must also score each before he actually judges it, by using the Average Placement Scale of 1 through 10; in other words, he must look at the dog as a whole, and place that dog on his scale, with a score of 10 meaning that the dog is in perfect harmony with the judge’s picture of the ideal Boxer. Scoring is much more time consuming than the comparison judging that we are accustomed to in the show ring, where judges can handle 25 or more dogs an hour. When scoring dogs, a judge can do no more than about 6 - 10 dogs an hour. But when scoring is completed, it provides a written critique of the dog as seen by the judge. The total score gives some sense of the “approximation of perfection” of the individual dog. In theory, if we had numerical scores of the great Boxers of the past, we could compare the scores of our present greats to them. So, in setting up the judging for the Top Twenty, we have set up a system that can provide numerical norms for future comparisons. Scoring has another virtue. It is strong discipline on the judge. A fault can seem to stand out to a judge. He can become sensitized to one difficulty or to one virtue. Scoring checks this to marked degree. It reduces the idiosyncrasies of the individual judges. One dog will enter the ring and will be scored completely by each judge. The dog will be moved individually, and the judges will score the dog for movement. This process will be repeated with one dog in the ring at a time, until all of the dogs have been scored. The judges will sign each dog’s score sheet. Points will be tabulated by an impartial panel, and results will be announced at the conclusion of the judging. While in the ring, judges will limit their conversation to their stewards and will then only discuss judging procedure. 10 11 BOXER POINT SCHEDULE FOR TOP TWENTY _______________ 15 TOTAL CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Alertness, animation, intelligence (reaction to handler & judges) .................................. AVERAGE PLACEMENT SCORE (1-10) _______________ AVERAGE PLACEMENT: MULTI-BREED JUDGE James G. Reynolds Mr. Reynolds has been involved in the sport of dogs since 1956. His Renaldo kennel of Scottish Terriers housed five Canadian Best in Show winners and produced over 30 Canadian and 15 AKC champions. He began judging at championship shows in 1967 and is licensed by the Canadian Kennel Club to judge all breeds and has been permitted by the AKC to do the same. He has officiated on five continents on many occasions and has been privileged to do over 50 national specialties in the USA, and officiated at the largest and most prestigious shows in the United States, including BIS at Santa Barbara, Beverly Hills, Louisville, Chicago, Detroit, Boston, Houston, Old Dominion and Golden Gate. He has adjudicated Best in Show at Australia’s largest show, the Melbourne Royal and in 2004 judged all the groups and Best in Show at the centenary anniversary show of the Ladies Kennel Association in England. In February of 2006, he judged Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club. Over the years, he has officiated at many Boxer specialties throughout Canada and the United States and is looking forward with great interest to the Top Twenty competition. 12 BREEDER JUDGE Ida Baum My husband, Dick, and I acquired our first Boxer in 1959. He was a three year old Bang Away son. While he did not contribute to our breeding program, he was a wonderful family dog and sealed our partnership with the Boxer breed forever. Our first champion was a brindle bitch called Cara-Bees Midnight Mist, novice owner-handled by Dick. She was of Canzonet breeding and was the foundation for Moon Valley Boxers. Over the years, Moon Valley produced Moon Valley’s Merry Weather LOM, her sons, Ch. Moon Valley’s Solar Flare SOM, Ch. Moon Valley’s Sun N Shadow LOM, and Ch. Araby’s Shortstop SOM. More recently came Ch. Moon Valley’s Main Attraction SOM, who was a Top Twenty winner and won 25 BIS, Ch. Moon Valley No Doubt, who was Reserve WD at the 2004 American Boxer Club and Ch Moon Valley No Foolin,’ the Reserve WD at the 2005 American Boxer Club. These are but a few of the many Moon Valley champions produced from a breeding program averaging only one litter a year. In partnership with my daughter, Nancy Baum Schepis, Moon Valley Boxers hopes to continue our tradition of breeding “quality, not quantity” for many years to come. I would like to thank the American Boxer Club for voting me the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. 13 HANDLER JUDGE Kimberley Pastella-Calvacca I am a third generation Boxer exhibitor. I am sure you all know my grandfather, Chic Ceccarini, who was in Boxers since the 1950’s. I was born into the Boxer breed and have shown Boxers my entire life - through grade school and my Bachelors Degree in Business and Hospital Administration. I have had the honor to show many Number One Boxers and many top Boxers. I have won the Breed at American Boxer Club 5 times, including: three times with Ch. Hi-Techs Johnny J of Boxerton, once with his grandfather, Ch. Hi-Techs Arbitrage, and also with Ch. Turos Cachet; 8 Boxers to Best Of Breed at Westminster Kennel Club - Arbitrage 2x, Johnny J 3x and his son, Basic Edition, 1x; Two group Firsts at Westminster Kennel Club and various other placements. My most notable ongoing achievement in the Boxer world is to have worked with the Truesdales for 21 years. In those years, we have accomplished five generations of BIS winners with two dogs, five generations of Stud Dog class winners at the American Boxer Club, soon to be five generations of Sires of Merits - so far one Legion of Merit, the only living LOM, with two more on the way and one bitch who is a Legion of Merit. I have also had the honor of winning Winners Dog 3x, Winners Bitch 2x, Best of Opposite 3x, and the TOP TWENTY 3x. I love to travel and sightsee and workout when time permits. It is a great honor to have been selected as this year’s Top Twenty handler judge. I look foward to judging the Best our Breed has to offer. These animals are a tribute to the dedication of our Boxer fanciers. 14 Contenders 15 2005 Top Twenty Conformation January 1, 2005 - December 31, 2005 Dogs Defeated Dogs 1. * Ch Brookwood’s Mystic Warrior 6876 2. * Ch Hi-Tech’s Basic Edition 5150 3. We believe the best time to evaluate puppies is the moment they are born. The minute Byron was born, we knew that he was going to be something special. He presented with a square body and solid headpiece. We could only hope he had the same elegant movement of his parents. Byron earned his championship certificate at the young age of nineteen months. He was owner breeder handled in the Puppy classes, accumulating his first five points, one of which being a four point Major at the Philadelphia Kennel Club Show under Judge Mr. Ronald H Menaker. We decided, following this win, to turn Byron over to a professional handler to complete his championship. Sixteen shows later, on April 1, 2005, Byron was a new champion. He won two more Majors at the New Brunswick Kennel Club New Jersey Boxer Club Specialty under International Judge Dr. Jose Luis Payro and the Delaware Water Gap Kennel Club under Judge Mrs. Joan P Scott. During these sixteen shows, Byron also had four Reserves, two of which were Majors. During the July 4th weekend, we gave Byron to professional handler Pete Yocum at the Southern Maryland Kennel Club shows to determine how competitive Byron could be as a Best of Breed competitor. Byron won both shows, resulting in our commitment in August of 2005 to special him. The team of Byron and Pete cracked the Top Twenty by the end of October. During this time, Byron gained momentum with a win on the Salem Virginia circuit at the New River Valley Kennel Club show under Judge Dr. Lee Reasin and the Ramapo Kennel Club show under International Judge Dr. Hideaki Nakazawz. Byron finished the year strong, winning back-to back shows during the last weekend of the year, securing his Top Twenty ranking. Byron won back-to-back Best of Breed competitions on three separate occasions during 2005. Byron has started the 2006 year strong, by winning breeds under Judges Debra Thornton and Elena Spector, then winning the Working Group under Vincent Mulligan. We are hopeful to continue a solid 2006 campaign against the highly competitive Boxers in the East. However, our favorite aspect of Byron is his temperament, because he has a sweet disposition; we have used Byron to help children overcome their fear of dogs. We have also taken Byron to a retirement home in our neighborhood to bring smiles to the faces of the elderly residents. Once Byron retires, he plans on pursuing opportunities as a therapy dog. Recognizing that the purpose of the experience was far different than you had anticipated is when real blessings can be realized. Samson (Ch. Irondale’s Uncommon Valor) is truly a blessing to The Doty and Bettis families. We embarked on a journey in 2005 that would invoke feelings of anxiety and then comfort, confusion and then clarity, agony and then joy. A journey that would challenge friendships, change paradigms about how one sees the world, put into perspective that which is truly important and ultimately strengthen the bonds of friendship. All of us have experienced the daily anxieties, confusion, and agony that exhibiting our animals brings us. We have also experienced the daily comfort, clarity and joy of the same. These are the natural, daily feelings we all go through while exhibiting our animals. But, what about the human relationships that are the natural bi-product of this wonderful sport we are in? Do we miss out on opportunities to show unconditional love to each other? We certainly have what many say is the best example of unconditional love in our dogs. Each of us has experienced that unconditional love through our dogs, and we yearn for this from our human family. The Doty and Bettis families were challenged with this through our journey in 2005. Many of our insecurities exhibited themselves when a show didn’t go a certain way, or there were periods of time where a win did not occur. I can remember days where I would question what I was doing, try to lay blame, or grow anxious about even doing this any more. But then I would remember, hey, that’s my friend showing my dog, and my friend is probably having the same feelings that I am. Ultimately, the experience has made a strong friendship stronger and brought two families closer than they have ever been. We have been truly blessed to have had the pleasure to exhibit Samson and, more importantly, blessed that our friends, Jim and Wendy Bettis, could exhibit him for us. Being a part of the 2006 American Boxer Club Top Twenty is truly an honor and something we will never forget. Through the years, Samson has also proven to be a successful stud dog as well. He has 5 champions to date with many get pointed throughout the country. For more details, please feel free to speak with our friends, Jim and Wendy Bettis. We are honored to be among the best dogs of 2005 and would like to congratulate all contenders. We wish each contender good luck in this year’s Top Twenty. One may say, “It’s only a dog” or “It’s only a dog show.” What this person misses is the opportunity to refine oneself, strengthen human bonds of friendship, realize the true blessing of the larger human family and understand what unconditional love truly means. So I say embrace these opportunities and allow them to be the blessing they were meant to be. Good Luck and God Bless! The Doty Family Owner: Brett & Kellie Doty Bred by: Exclusivley Handled by: J. By the age of 15 months, she was Brazil’s #1 Working Dog and #2 Dog All Breeds, earning over 30 All Breed Best In Show awards to her credit. But, most importantly, she came into my heart and life quite simply as “Sweetheart.” Due to AKC registration issues, “Sheeva” finished her AKC Championship twice, both times in less than one month, earning Working Group First placements along the way from the classes. During her career in the USA, she earned numerous Breed wins in supported entries, as well as Best In Specialty shows. Her ability to shine in the Group rings earned her multiple Working Group Firsts, as well as numerous other Group placements. She was awarded an All Breed Best In Show at the Chambersburg Area Kennel Club Dog Show on 12-04-2004. Based on commentary from judges, breeders, and fellow handlers, “Sheeva” is probably known best for her outstanding movement. She is one of those special ones - who was born to show. Her ability to channel her enthusiasm and concentrate her energy culminated in a breed specimen who, through her movement in the ring, earned her recognition from not only judges but her most fierce competitors. As “Sheeva” prepares for the next phase of her career, that of Motherhood, she will be remembered for her many accomplishments - but perhaps, most importantly, she will always be known and loved and will live in my heart forever, as America’s “Sweetheart.” ——— Marcelo Chagas, Professional Handler 58 59 60
