Photo by Christine Paluf Petit Great Expectations 2012 Annual Report to the Community Serving People with Intellectual and Related Disabilities Message from the Chair of the Board & President / CEO Dear Friends, We are heartened by the confidence and trust that families place with us in the day-to-day support and care of their loved ones. Beginning with early intervention, through the senior years, we commit to a journey of working together to actualize the dreams of the people we support and their families who love them. We expect this of ourselves, and our families have come to expect this of us. Throughout the years our family movement fought diligently to create a full range of lifetime supports needed by people with a full range of disability. For over sixty years, the HARC Family and the community-at-large have joined hands with other families across the United States to advocate for a better life. Years and years of meetings focused on social and public policy, HARC’s Clients want to be heard, want to advocate for themselves, want interesting, enjoyable programs, and want to be treated with respect and dignity. funding, human and civil rights and programs and services resulted in a comprehensive system of community- based supports that works well. Some of these accomplishments were won in the courts, others in Congress, and still others in state legislatures. These battles were costly in time and treasure . . . but very worth it. As a result of all this work, we have rightfully grown to have great expectations for our loved ones. The legacy of our early pioneers is that their sons and daughters, sisters and brothers will enjoy their lives in a safe, productive, inclusive and loving way. We are therefore alarmed at any reference that this legacy is unrealistic and unaffordable or that comprehensive services in the adult years should no longer be expected. We reject this notion entirely and remain committed to the great expectations that we worked so hard to achieve. We are grateful to our community for standing with us by supporting our initiatives to fulfill the dreams of our HARC Family. The United Way has its fingerprints on, literally, every new initiative that we have undertaken since we began our partnership in 1966. We have come to have great expectations for community support and the community has great expectations for the role HARC plays both in advocacy and the provision of supportive services. This annual report celebrates the expectations we have for each other. We are grateful to all the generous people and partners in our community who have helped us in this privileged journey. With your vigilance and help we know that people with developmental disabilities and their families will continue to MISSION HARC helps people with intellectual disability enjoy these hard-won fruits, when our great expectations are realized. The Society honors individuals who give $1,951 or more to HARC in a given calendar year. Bernard began in one of HARC’s Rocky Hill condos for people living in independent settings. A year later he moved to his own apartment receiving support from HARC about five days a week. Bernard’s mother passed away a few years ago, but he continues to enjoy living on his own, working at Stop & Shop, and participating in Special Olympics Connecticut. According to his sister Gloria Patman, “Bernard just loves living and working on his own and it has really added to his self-confidence. Their daughter Alex recently began a day program at HARC’s Bulova Center. Both Liz and Najib say that, in terms of care and service to clients and families,“the bar is set high at HARC.” According to Najib, “This goes hand-in-hand with knowing that the collective mind-set at HARC is one of ‘conscientious diligence.’ The people we serve are at the core of everything HARC does, and HARC never loses site of that. However, this level of service can only be sustained with the generous support of HARC’s donor community.” 6 The Board of Directors expects HARC to be fiscally responsible, to attract and retain excellent, qualified staff and to give the best possible service and care to its clients and famiies. John first came to know HARC through membership in Connecticut Business Networkers, the West Hartford chapter of Business Networking International. After volunteering for HARC in a few different capacities, he hit on Santa at holiday time and has never looked back! According to John, “I’ve watched these children grow up! I get so much out of this - it’s really me who’s getting the presents.
