US Size 15 dpns, two circs or magic loop – whichever
you prefer for knitting in the round
1.2 skeins - approximately 110 yards – (MC) Cascade
Lana Grande Red – Color 6053 or other super bulky
yarn

0.8 skeins - approximately 80 yards (CC) - Cascade
Lana Grande Ecru – Color 6010 or other super bulky
yarn
Darning needle

SSK – Sl 1 as if to knit, slip the next st as if to knit.
Slide the left-hand needle into the front part of both
sts and knit them together.
GAUGE - 9 sts = 4 inches in stockinette stitch
TECHNIQUES
Stripes Pattern
The hat will be worked in stockinette stitch (knitting all stitches
on all rounds) maintaining the striping pattern of 3 rounds in
MC and 3 rounds in CC. Continue in this manner, working
alternating stripes of CC (2 rounds) and MC (3 rounds),
carrying the unworked yarn along the inside of the fabric and
catching it with the working yarn at every color-change.
Trapping the carried yarn this way will create a clean look on
the inside of your fabric.
Slip Stitch Jogless Stripes
Use this simple slip stitch jogless striping method to reduce the
obvious beginning of each stripe as follows: Begin the striping
pattern as described above, starting with the CC. At each
color change, knit an entire round in the new color. At the
nd
beginning of the 2 round of each stripe, simply slip the first
stitch and knit around as usual. Repeat at each stripe.
The slip stitch jogless stripe minimizes the join for stripes in the
round.

RIBBING and LEG

Using MC, cast on 40 sts. Join in the round, being
careful not to twist.
Round 1: *K1, P1; rep from *
Repeat until piece measures 4 ½ inches from cast on
edge
Switch to stockinette and Knit 1 round in MC.
For the leg, make 3-row stripes – alternating CC and
MC for 11 stripes (3 rounds x 11 stripes = 33 rounds)
– beginning and ending with a CC (white) stripe. Be
sure to use the slip stitch jogless striping method.
HEEL FLAP

Using MC, make a heel flap across half of the stitches
(20 sts)

Knit across. Turn.
•
Purl across. Turn.
•
Repeat these two rows until you have knit 14 rows of
stockinette.
TURN HEEL
•
Continuing with MC, Slip 1, K10, SSK, K1, turn.
•
Slip 1, P3, P2tog, P1, turn.
•
Slip 1, K4, SSK, K1, turn
•
Slip 1, P5, P2tog, P1, turn
•
Slip 1, K6, SSK, K1, turn
•
Slip 1, P7, P2tog, P1, turn

Slip 1, K8, SSK, K1, turn

Slip 1, P9, P2tog, P1, turn
•
Slip 1, knit across.
GUSSET
•
Continuing with MC, pick up 9 sts along gusset. Knit
sts along the instep. Pick up 9 sts along other gusset.
Knit across to end of round (where yarn joins) – (50
sts).

NOTE: Continue to switch stripe color after every
third round so you stay in pattern– but also pay close
attention to the following gusset shaping, too.

K1, SSK, K24, K2tog, K21. (48 sts)
•
K around. Yes - you’ve caught me. That last gusset
only has 2 rows for its stripe. But since it’s the MC and
the heel flap is also the MC - it doesn’t show and it
keeps the jogless stripe nice and neat. (See photo
below.)

Graft toe shut using the Kitchener stitch.
Weave in loose ends.
Using a 6-8 inch length of yarn, create a loop for hanging
your stocking.
