choose nursing, choose hoag - the Hoag Hospital Foundation
10TH ANNIVERSARY
CHOOSE NURSING, CHOOSE HOAG 2014 LUNCHEON
TECHNOLOGY
Celebrating a Decade of Community Support for Nursing at Hoag
Hoag is proud to offer a Nursing Preceptorship to bridge
the gap between the classroom and the clinical area. Being
a preceptor for Hoag is rewarding for experienced nurses
who become role models and mentors, helping other nurses
achieve their full potential.
The Hoag Hospital Foundation hosted more than 300 donors and friends at the 10th Anniversary
Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag luncheon to proudly recognize and celebrate the philanthropic support of
our community and to honor Hoag nursing scholars and their exceptional care for Hoag patients.
Literary luminary with multiple bestsellers in the U.S. and abroad, Dean Koontz, who is also a Hoag grateful
patient and donor, graciously donated his time and talent as the featured speaker. Special honoree, Ken Beall,
was inducted into the Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag Hall of Fame.
2014 Impact Report
The Preceptor Challenge
Through donor contributions, Hoag preceptors took part
in a groundbreaking, highly interactive new course, The
Preceptor Challenge. Using virtual characters in realistic
hospital settings, nurses had the opportunity to apply
theory-based practices in real-life interactive
scenarios.
Hoag recognizes the importance of our
preceptors and the vital role they play in
the education of our nurses.
CHOOSE NURSING,
CHOOSE HOAG
“Integrating advanced technology in nursing education is having a transformational
impact on the field of nursing. Virtual classes like the Preceptor Challenge allow
our nurses to learn in new and innovative ways, ultimately improving patient care
and outcomes.”
KEN BEALL
2014 Choosing Nursing, Choose Hoag
Hall of Fame Honoree
At the luncheon, long-time philanthropist and volunteer leader, Ken
Beall, was inducted into the Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag Hall of
Fame. Ken was honored in recognition of years of committed service
and leadership in which he laid the groundwork for all that CNCH has
accomplished, including the opening of the Marion Knott Nursing
Education Center and building support for the nursing scholarship
program. We sincerely thank Ken for his dedication.

EDUCATION
2020 Nursing
Education Mandate:
The Need
Since the start of the 21st century, patients’ needs and care
environments have become more complex, requiring nurses to attain
requisite skills to deliver higher-quality care.
In 2010, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) issued an ambitious goal for
hospitals to maintain Magnet status: increase the proportion of nurses
with baccalaureate or bachelor of science in nursing degrees from
approximately 50 percent to 80 percent by 2020. Hoag is committed
to supporting this initiative by providing the necessary funds for our
working nurses to earn higher degrees, while also increasing the
quality of patient care at Hoag due to the direct correlation between
RN education levels and positive patient outcomes.
Hoag donors are playing an integral role in helping Hoag reach these
nursing education objectives for 2020 and ensuring nursing excellence
at Hoag. The scholarships you support enable Hoag to continue
providing the significant resources needed for nurses to advance their
education, ultimately improving the delivery of care to our patients,
now and in the future.
Currently
46%
of Hoag nurses today have a
baccalaureate or bachelor of
science in nursing degree
AN INVESTMENT IN NURSING EXCELLENCE
CONFERENCES
Since the inception of Choose Nursing, Choose Hoag (CNCH) in 2004, over $24 million has been raised for
nursing education initiatives and over 600 Hoag nurses have received CNCH-funded scholarship awards for their
continued education, training, and advanced degrees, with a record number of 363 awarded last year alone.
These scholarships were made possible through your generous contributions and are granted in recognition of
talent, achievement and dedication to Hoag nursing excellence.
Your commitment to nursing excellence at Hoag is also demonstrated through the donations we receive for
Hoag nurses to attend regional, state and national conferences as a way to increase their knowledge-base
and stay abreast of leading-edge techniques and technology within their specialty area.
The collective generosity from the Argyros Family Foundation and the community has allowed Hoag to increase the
scholarship amount awarded annually to each Hoag nurse from $2,000 to $6,000. This increase has been essential
in making it possible for a record number of dedicated nurses to advance their education, research and practice.
Total Scholarships Awarded:
By the year 2020
80%
of Hoag nurses must have a
baccalaureate or bachelor of
science in nursing degree for

organizations for quality patient
care, nursing excellence, and
innovations in professional
nursing practice. There are
currently 395 Magnet facilities
worldwide and Hoag is one of

Pacific Southwest Region.
Embracing Excellence in Oncology Nursing Practice
Made possible by the generosity of Circle 1000, a volunteer group that has raised over $15 million dollars for Hoag
to support cancer care, Hoag’s Annual Oncology Nursing Conference is becoming known as the premier regional
nursing oncology conference for the west coast, attracting speakers and nurses from all over the country.

During this two-day event, 150 oncology and radiation oncology nurses, including 55 Hoag nurses, benefitted
from an intimate learning environment in which prominent faculty presented the latest in oncology care and
provided practical strategies and tools to improve nursing practice. In addition to offering strong clinical
content from leading experts, the conference provided the necessary context to integrate information into
practice to improve the quality of our patients’ lives.
Medical-Surgical Nursing Conference and the Cardiovascular and Critical Care Nursing Conference
Thanks to the generosity of donor Marilyn McIntyre, Hoag nurses are able to update their knowledge in the
fields of medical surgical nursing and critical care nursing. The two conferences funded annually by the
McIntyre Nursing Education Conference Fund are priceless opportunities for Hoag nurses to learn the latest
advances in critical and cardiovascular patient care.
