The club web site has completed the transition to the new back-end
hosting service. The web address is still www.shilshole-bayyc.org. It
will take a while to add some of the older content over the next few
months (like previous years’ race results and Rudderpost issues), and
to add some more photos to the cruise pages. If you have some
photos to share or ideas for the web site, contact Robert Blaylock at
[email protected].
You can now make your reservations for the June Dinner Dance
online at http://www.shilshole-bayyc.org/June_Dinner_Dance.html.
The reservation deadline is 5pm Tuesday, June 5. After that, the
price goes from $40 to $45 per person.
Opening Day Parade
The Opening Day Parade was a lot of fun this year. Four boats from
SBYC participated, spread over two categories. One boat was in the
Spinnaker Class (Shoot the Moon), and three in the Spirit Class
(Antares, Morning Star, and Turning Point). The raft-up at Dock 0
was exciting with so many boats and yacht clubs from around the
Salish Sea meeting up for the weekend.
The trip to SYC started on Friday, cold and wet, with some pretty decent downpours at the locks, and then again in Portege Bay. It was
brightened up by travelling as a group with Antares, Shoot the Moon,
and Turning Point, and going through the locks together. Morning
Star came later and missed getting through the University Bridge by 4
pm, so found safe harbor at Ivar’s Happy Hour during the rush hour.
This year it was my privilege to participate in the massive line up of
commodores for the opening ceremonies. The white Commodore Hat
from the “Commodore’s Briefcase” was much too small for me, and
I’m glad it didn’t fall off. It was really cool to see our club’s burgee
raised with all the other club burgees at SYC. I enjoyed the dinners
and cocktail reception at the SYC Clubhouse. I highly recommend
checking them out if you ever go.
We had sun for the Parade, and the day was just beautiful. Our Spirit
Class group got broken up just before the start. As the lead boat,
and the smallest boat, I think my course through the boats in the
staging area was a little too tight. However, we regrouped to start the
parade, and we managed to keep a good line past the judges and
press, and past the very long line of boats on the log boom. Unfortunately, our inflatable palm trees did not win us any prizes this year.
The trip back to Shilshole Bay was also a little exciting. There was a

bit of a wait to get into the locks. I’m glad I tied up along the wall for the 30-40 minute wait. There must have been at least 40 boats in the locking, filling half the large
locks. They could have even added a few more, but everyone waiting got in. I left
SYC well before Morning Star and they got in the group as well.
But once through the locks, the train bridge was still down. There were 12 sailboats
stuck between the locks and the bridge for about a half hour while waiting for a train
to pass. Larry and Maxine on Shingebiss II was one of the boats trapped. It got
quite crowded with all of us trying to not hit each other in the squirrelly currents from
the locks and dam, as well as avoiding some boats waiting to go into the locks. It
was a relief when the bridge finally opened, and home port in Shilshole Bay was only
around the corner.
All in all, it was a great, beautiful weekend for opening day! I’m looking forward to
seeing you all at our club events over the rest of the Spring and Summer!
May the winds and currents be ever in your favor.

Next Dinner Meeting Thursday May 17
Anthony’s at Shilshole Bay
5:30 PM Happy Hour in the bar - 7:00 PM Dinner
Please join club members Chris & Joe Bozick, Jewels Mellen and Chris Powell at the
May dinner meeting for a look at some slides and discussion about their cruise on a
five-masted, square-rigged clipper ship in the Mediterranean. A combination small
cruise ship with just 220 passengers and tall sailing ship, the Star Clipper provided
both luxury and adventure while carrying them to ports including some of the best
sailing grounds in the Adriatic, Ionian and Tyrrhenian Seas.
Starting from Venice, ports of call included Hvar, Ravinj and Dubrovnik in Croatia, UN
World Heritage site Kotor in Montenegro, Corfu, Sicily, the Amalfi Coast, and Capri.
Between ports of call the 439-foot-long Royal Clipper sailed under a veritable sea of
canvas – boasting 42 sails and the niftiest roller furling system you can imagine. Join
us for stories about an excellent 3 euro bottle of table wine, the view from the crows
nest, and hikes with magnificent views. And maybe you’ll be inspired to take a tall
ship cruise and experience them for yourself. Either way, it is sure to be a fun evening with the Chris, Joe, Jewels and Chris.

CRUISE UPDATE
May Newsletter 2012
By Mary Murphy, Cruise Chair
And a Happy Spring Greeting to You All.
The Cruise Chair wants to add a few profound points to the Yellowfest event held
on April 7 on Blake Island. First of all, for those of you who were unable to attend,
you simply must join in next year. It is absolutely hysterical to see a group of smiling
adults running as fast as their middle aged legs would allow onto the beach, over the
grass, lifting large logs, climbing trees, and down on their hands and knees looking
for hidden bottles! See Sam and Dave’s note following the Cruise Update.
Lo and behold! The fastest, most cunning of all, was Pauline Bruce. She was, by far,
the Victor in the Bottle Hording Competition. Congratulations to Pauline.
Another noteworthy victory was captured by Morning Star for best dressed boat.
Now, I spent some time visiting Morning Star Saturday afternoon, and saw firsthand
the premeditated lobby activity carried on by the one who created all that beauty. I
guess the bar is elevated, and Jessie might have to hoist the main a bit higher! A job
well done, Jewels.
Next stop, Burger Burn May 19. OK, people! There is a push this year to get
younger adults (in age only) to come and join SBYC for this event. Well, so far we
know of only a few, coming with the Commodore. What is up with that? We got
food, we got fun, we got games and we got a treasure hunt planned out for everybody. I hope you can make it.

planning marches forward. I am
awed by, and ever so grateful for,
our planning committee’s tremendously successful work
putting it together, particularly creating decorations and
preparing food. All systems are go from the planning
standpoint.
Now, it is up to you, the club’s illustrious members, to
get creative. Come up with an award winning super
hero, cartoon, or comic book character costume. I have
mine all ready to go. I say l will look ridiculous. I have
no pride to also say,
“Never Fear, Underdog is Here.”

Note from Sam & Dave
Yellow Fest Success and The Wharf Ratz
Yellow Fest
First, we would like to thank everyone who joined us
for Yellow Fest at Blake Island and made it another
successful event. Twelve boats attended, with 87 bottles and a few "Yellow" Card Awards of bottles.
Morning Star was awarded the Best Dressed boat.
The potluck was again full of yummy food, and followed by songs around the fire.
The winds made it too cold to really enjoy "The Living
Room", but it will make future appearances.
Oh, and a bottle's eye view of Sam from the bottle hunt...
The Wharf Ratz
Second, the Shilshole Bay Wharf Ratz will be playing at the "Get On the Water" event
on May 12. The music will start after 6 PM, and we will play 2 sets. We'll set up on X
dock, or in the CYC clubhouse if it's rainy. We have learned some new materials Come find out if we have one of your favorites!
Take care, Sam & Dave
