SCOO PILOT SAILING CLUB OF ORIENTAL __________________________________________________________________________________________________ SUMMER and FALL 2015 Gordon Kellogg, Editor COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Commodore Jerry Buckman Sailing has been good to Elizabeth and me for the last 50 years! Mostly it has been racing on Hobies, Tornados, Dragon Flies, Melges and fast keel boats but not a lot of cruising. After moving to Oriental five years ago and joining SCOO that all changed. Where in the past our pleasure in sailing was from the competition and the sailing in itself. Now our enjoyment in sailing has broadened to the act of sailing, navigation, exploration at the destination and camaraderie with like-minded people. We enjoy the cruises, socials, races and friendships associated with SCOO. There are six activities left on the calendar for 2015: Cape Lookout Cruise, Commodore's Cup, Mumfest, Little Washington Cruise, South River Cruise.and the Annual Change of Watch. It is NOT TO LATE to sign up for any or all scheduled events. Hope to see all of you there. Jerry Buckman VICE COMMODORE’S MESSAGE Vice Commodore Joe Glorioso It has been a HOT summer but our 2015 sailing season has had some well attended and fun events. But the season is not over yet. I just wanted to remind everyone that we STILL have some great cruises and the Commodores Cup race coming up. We have lots going on and some great cruise captains on board to facilitate these last five events. Members, don't miss the chance to participate! As always, the more the merrier. Let's see you out there, Joe Glorioso -1- DATE EVENT CRUISE CAPTAINS PHONE Sept. 22-25 Morehead City/Cape Lookout Pat and Almira Dallas Sept. 30 Commodores Cup Jerry B., Gordon K., Ed B. There are no new applicants at this time. SOCIAL COMMITTEE NEWS____________ Chris Behre, Chairman SCOO is looking for a volunteer SCOO member or SCOO couple that is willing to take over the Social Committee Chair responsibilities for next year. I will be running for the Rear Commodore position and likely will not have a lot of opposition. I would be happy to talk with you about the Chair’s responsibilities. If you are fairly new to SCOO, it is an amazing way to get to know many of the SCOO members, and the committee makes the Chair’s job quite easy and rewarding. If you are interested in the position, or just joining the social committee, please call me or send an email. Following the successful spring SCOO events, the Summer Picnic and Regretta Regatta social events were well attended and fun for all! Coming up our last event of the year: Sep 20 – Commodore’s Cup – Pecan Grove – set up at 3 p.m. (Catered by Silo’s – pizza) I want to thank all members of the social committee for all you do! The smooth and efficient way you all chip in to make it seem seamless to the SCOO membership is quite welcome! -2- CRUISE AND SOCIAL ACTIVITIES REPORTS STEAKOUT AT THE STACKHOUSE’S Charles and Ann Stackhouse For the third year in a row, the Steak Out took place on Gideon Creek. Despite the threat of subtropical storm Ana swirling around the Carolina coast, the weather held and fifty nine people attended the Steak-out on May 7th at the home of Charles and Ann Stackhouse. Only four boats braved the elements and spent the night at the Stackhouse dock. Since this turned into an eating event rather than a cruising event due to the weather, most of this discussion will revolve around the food. Prior to the main event, the makings for Nachos (tortilla chips, salsa, jalapeño peppers, and hot cheese) were enjoyed along with nuts, cheese and crackers, and two types chex mix (one was chocolate covered). The host gave a brief oral discussion of the history of Pamlico. The menu consisted of steaks cooked by the attendees, baked potatoes with butter and sour cream, caesar salad, rolls, water, coffee, and tea. Toppings for the ice cream sundaes included crushed cookies, walnuts, cherries, whipped cream, chocolate and caramel syrups. Earl Evens Bananas Foster was truly missed. The number for breakfast the following morning dropped from 33 to 9, however, since the boating forecast was somewhat dismal. The breakfast menu consisted of sausage gravy with biscuits, assorted pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. We would like to thank two prospective members of SCOO, Carl Franklin and Joanna Harrell, for all of their assistance. Special thanks to Brantley’s Restaurant for finding us the best steaks available and to the Marine Corp for the rental of their cooker. BROAD CREEK SHORE PICNIC Joe and Carol Glorioso We had the Cookout held the eve of the Summer Solstice Race at Point Marina on Broad Creek. Boats were allowed to dock on the end of "T" pier at Point Marina so they would be ready to race the Summer Solstice Race the following day. We had close to 40 persons attend the cookout and pot luck dinner. The great thing about Point Marina was that the clubhouse is AIR CONDITIONED! Therefore it seems appropriate to say that we all had a cool time. Joe Glorioso SUMMER SOLSTICE Gerry and CherylCrowley, Dennis and Elaine Snyder The 2015 SCOO/ODC Summer Solstice Sailstice was held on 20 June 2015. Twenty boats registered for the event, however three boats dropped out due to concerns over weather, leaving seventeen (17) boats competing for coveted trophies and bragging rights. Sailing Instructions (SI’s) with course to be sailed and individual boat start times for the “pursuit style” race format were passed out at the 0900 Skippers meeting. This race has for the past twenty five years continues to be run in the lower Neuse River off Broad Creek and Pamlico Sound. The course is roughly a ten mile triangle course utilizing Government marks “Neuse River Junction”, “NR” and #4 off of Broad Creek. It was only fitting that the first boat to start at 1200 hrs., was POLLYWOG, skippered by Tim Balfour a “card carrying” charter member (#32) of the Whortonsville Yacht & Tractor Club (WYTC). -3- POLLYWOG Skippered by Tim Balfour and Jennifer Smart. A Bruce Bingham designed Flika Fitting in that this event was originally organized and run by Nick Santoro of Whortonsville Yacht & Tractor Club (WYTC) fame for twenty year. Twenty years was enough the Admiral said. Since 2010 The Sailing Club of Oriental (SCOO) with cooperation and assistance from the Oriental Dinghy Club (ODC) has organized and run the event. The above picture shows, at the start of the race we were in the doldrums. In fact they lasted for approximately two hours before the winds began to fill from the South to 10-15 MPH which became a significant advantage to the later starting and faster boats. To illustrate, the last boat to start: VECTOR, 70 minutes after the first, finished second. We did have one participant that took the doldrums opportunity to play an improvised game of “pin-ball” with the course’s inflatable marks…scoring points by bumping off both of them (starting line “pin” & first turning mark (#4)) .Luckily Pin-Ball was only “played” with the inflatable marks and not the fixed government marks. -4- Some boats were setting as much “canvas” as they could, evidenced by Kevin Bryan’s Long Shot, a Tartan 34C pictured here. BTW you might recall that past Commodore George Duffy, now deceased, sailed a Tartan 34C and use to try to convince us that the “C” stood for “CLASSIC” not center-board. With the building winds storm clouds eventually came and with NOAA predicting thunder storms, yada, yada, yada, the Race Committee called to a few boats still on the course to “abandon” and head for cover. As it turned out the severe weather and rain passed north without incident. Race participants and guests reconvened at the Fork Point home of our hosts Dennis & Elaine Snyder, for awards/trophies, and Berkley Hill’s “pig-pickin” and covered dish social. Pictured below is Berkley serving the pig. -5- As part of this year’s Summer Solstice we put out a “challenge” to the Ladies to wear their “fascinators” and several did. Pictured from left to right: Laurie Sampson, Beth Michne, Carol Small, and Kathy Ruppert Order of finish as determined by the Race committee was as follows: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Loaves of bread were awarded to the fourth and fifth place finishers as follows: Fourth Place; STIMULUS, Jerry Buckman -8- That’s Brian on NEVERMOORE who took fifth place and accepting for Brian was Rob Barefoot. A side note…wanting to verify that Rob actually delivered the loaf of bread to Brian I contacted Brian and in his own words: “who baked that bread. It was the best trophy I’ve ever gotten” ..and trust me, he meant it and Brian is the only skipper that has won this prestigious event twice. Two additional awards were presented. One being the “Fascinator” award which was presented to SV NOVA CARINA, specifically Laurie Sampson and Beth Michne Laurie Sampson and Beth Michne of SV NOVA CARINA accepting the “FASCINATOR” AWARD -9- BTW, generally NOVA CARINA is “raced” by Beth Michne with a female crew but it’s understood that Bill Michne had stowed away this year and once found had to be put in irons and chained to the mast. AND……last but not least the “Founder’s Cup” trophy was presented to Nick Santoro the founder of the Whortonville Yacht & Tractor Club’s Summer Solstice Sailabration. Nick Santoro accepting the FOUNDER”S CUP We hope that everyone enjoyed themselves as much as we did and special thanks to those that make the Summer Solstice possible. YOU the participants and specifically Dennis & Elaine Snyder for again providing the venue for our “picnic”, SCOO (Social Chair Chris Behre) for providing tables and coolers, Earl & Sandy Evens for the use of their Mainship SOUPER for Race Committee duty, the Oriental Dinghy Club (Bill Michne Commodore) for the use of Race Committee gear (marks, anchors and signal flags), Rebba Tiller for baking loaves of bread for trophies, Gordon Kellogg for doing the “handicapping,” Berkley Hill for barbecuing the pig, my “Admiral” Cheryl for her support and photography and the crews of CIELO & JORUM for supplying photographs also. While the predicted heavy rain did not materialize, the temperatures were hot. Very hot. Brantley’s, again this year provided fried chicken and fixings. But with a dour weather forecast, Brantley’s offered SCOO the use of their back room. We accepted, and it turned out to be a great success. We had 65 members attend the event, and the only problem worthy of mention was when Brantley’s ran out of their great fried chicken. We added ham to the menu as an alternative for those that didn’t eat fried food, and there was ham left over. So – in the future we will make sure there is enough fried chicken to go around. Brantley’s air conditioning was quite well received. For future picnics I recommend having a backup plan for an indoor venue in the event of bad weather and or severe heat. Chris Behre, Social Committee Chair OCRACOKE CRUISE II Jerry and Donna Luh One never knows what the weather gods will send us in August, but 25 cruisers on eleven boats were blessed when they headed to Ocracoke Island on August 10th for a SCOO outing. We had calm seas, light winds, and mild temperatures on our way to Ocracoke. Since cruise captains Jerry and Donna Luh (Bluejacket) were leaving from Broad Creek, Bill and Phyllis Chaplik volunteered to meet the in-town cruisers at Oriental marker #1 to sail over as a group. Everyone who wished for a spot at the National Park Service Docks in Ocracoke was successful in securing a slip. By 5:00 p.m. we found our way to the national park service picnic area where, under the shade of some very old cedar trees, we shared happy hour with heavy hors d’oeuvres then took an evening stroll to the other end of town for an ice cream treat. On Tuesday, most of the gals headed for the local coffee shop to start their day of shopping while many of the guys took a hike thru town and around Springer Point Park. At the arranged hour of 1:00 p.m., some fun loving souls were back under the cedar trees to play the Sailor’s Game… family feud style. Divided into two teams, the Keel Haulers and the Plank Walkers, the teams vied to answer questions posed on seamanship, yacht equipment, general boating trivia, marine trivia, and navigation. As we played the game, the weather continued to deteriorate. We remembered the adage used by many in the cruising world “all plans are made in Jell-O”, so our pot luck get together was postponed for a day while we all headed to the Flying Melon Restaurant for dinner. It rained lightly on us as we walked to the restaurant and as predicted, the sky began to open on our return trip to the marina. We were treated to a real lightening light show before turning in for the night. We awakened to a bright new day on Wednesday with plans for more island exploring, shopping, and boat hopping. By 5:00 p.m. everyone headed back to the picnic area for a wonderful pot luck dinner of home cooked goodies. That began our fun filled evening which took us on a trip to the Deepwater Theater to enjoy the Ocrafolk Opry. Nineteen cruisers went and came away from the show with happy faces and kudos for the Ocrafolk performers. On Thursday morning, we were again greeted with beautiful skies, temperate temperatures, and light winds for sailing back home…perfect conditions for Joe Valinoti to guide all interested cruisers thru the Nine Foot Slew. A great big thanks to all who participated: Prospective members Roger & Leslie Hammer (Angelyn) [with friends Bill & Brenda Hallam] and Tom Mc Elroy & Alice Petree (Highland Fox); and SCOO members Chris & Jamie Behre (Jorum), Jerry & Elizabeth Buckman (Stimulus), Bill & Phyllis Chaplik (Juniata), Joe - 11 - & Carol Glorioso (Cefalu), Hans Nickstadt (Lulu), Bob & Stacey Taylor (Pelican), Henry & Karen VanGamper(Kory), and Joe & Paula Valinoti (Il Gatto). REGRETTA REGATTA Gerry and Cheryl Crowley 2015 was the nineteenth (19th) year that SCOO has had a REGRETTA REGATTA. The event was first envisioned by Commodore Art Tierney and his Admiral Elise. Cheryl & I have had the privilege of “orchestrating” the event for about seven years now. This year was another success with eighteen (18) boats participating. In no particular order the boats were: Lady K, Jorum, Stimulus, White Gate, Whisper, Cefalu, Clew-Less, Juniata, Wind Melody, LuLu, Bay-B, Detour, Lansa, Quixotic, Miranda, Kory, Stinger, Spindrift. The Elbonians assured us that weather would not be an issue for the 2015 Regretta and they were proven correct. Perhaps it was a little too perfect for the sailboats as the winds barely approached 5 knots at times. However the skies were clear with no precipitation on the water and at our shore event. Bill and Phyllis Chaplik allowed their Mainship 40, JUNIATA to serve as the “Committee Boat” and onboard assisting Cheryl & I were Walt & Mary Ann Brown. As a result the pursuit style race got off on time for once at 1200 hrs., for a clockwise course around the Government marks of Garbacon, Adams Creek and Oriental 1. (did you know that actually Oriental 1 is really Smith Creek channel #1??) There had been credible rumors that the “Donald” might make an appearance on the water but we later learned that he had scheduled a hour hair appointment with Flo, which eventually turned into three hours!!!!...Whoda thunk???? As is customary for the Regretta, the “Three Cheat Rule” (TCR) was in effect., with a significant number of participants vying for “Whistle-Blower” status in identifying what they perceived as infractions of the TCR; while they vied for favorable “positions’ on the course. The Committee took all protests seriously before blowing them off. Due to the extremely light winds the race was terminated around 1345 hrs., to give the boats sufficient time to return to home ports and get to the awards/trophy ceremony and social at Sea Harbor Marina, scheduled to commence at 1630 hrs., At 1700 hrs., the awards and trophy presentations commenced with “presentations” as follows: First Place Sail…………………..CEFALU First-Second Place sail………….LADY K Thumb’s Up………………… …STINGER Slow Poke………………………WIND MELODY Going-in Circles……………… STIMLUS Wishing…………………………MIRANDA Diamond-in Ruff……………… QUIXOTIC Dirty Bottom………………… .BAY-B Following the award and trophy presentations was the covered dish social. Which I believe everyone was able to get their fill. Cheryl & I wish to thank all the Social Committee members and Chris Behre (Social Committee Chair) for getting everything set up at Sea Harbor and the Chaplik’s (Bill & Phyllis) for the use of their boat as the Committee Boat and Walt and Mary Ann Brown for assisting the Race Committee. We hope everyone enjoyed themselves on the water and at the shore event and we hope to see everyone next year. We’ll get pictures posted to PICASA where everyone with a computer can access them.
