Last month’s Business After Hours
was held poolside at Sunset Grille &
Raw Bar on Wed. July 13th. The large
crowd enjoyed the live music from
John Bartus’s Stormwatch. The
catered event had a great turnout
and everyone enjoyed the waterfront
view. We had several guest speakers
and lots of prizes and cash to give
away!
The membership luncheon was held
on Tuesday July 19th at Lencho’s
Restaurant. Everyone enjoyed the
delicious Mexican buffet, while
listening to Chamber CEO Daniel
Samess discuss the Business
Beautification Program. Several of
our guests had the opportunity to
speak to the crowd on behalf of their
businesses and community news.

BUSINESS
BEAUTIFICATION
PROGRAM UNDERWAY
&
Chamber’s
BIG
Raffle Contest
You have heard and read about our
Business Beautification Program; after
receiving over 20 applications from
Marathon Chamber business members,
all deserving; the Chamber’s Board of
Directors had the arduous task of choosing
10 grant recipients. As I mentioned all our
applicants were very deserving and we all
wished we could fund every single business
that applied. Unfortunately only 10 could
be chosen this year, and we are confident
and excited that their beautification projects
will not only add to each of their business’s
visual appeal but also add to the beautification of Marathon and The Middle Keys.

Annual Adult Spelling Bee
Join Us For This Critically Acclaimed
Film!!! – Forks Over Knives
Sponsored by:
Food for Thought, The Total Wellness
Center and the American Cancer Society
Despite the most advanced medical
technology in the world, we are sicker
than ever by nearly every measure.
What has happened to us? Cases of
diabetes are exploding, especially
amongst our younger population.
About half of us are taking at least
one prescription drug and major
medical operations have become
routine. Heart disease, cancer and
stroke are the country’s three leading
causes of death, even though billions
are spent each year to “battle” these
very conditions. Millions suffer from
a host of other degenerative diseases.
Could it be there’s a single solution to
all of these problems? A solution so
comprehensive but so straightforward,
that it’s mind-boggling that more of us
haven’t taken it seriously? FORKS OVER
KNIVES examines the profound claim
that most, if not all, of the so called
“diseases of affluence” that afflict us can
be controlled, or even reversed through
the foods we eat (and don’t eat)!

is September 16th
at San Pablo Church
Hall. This is a 3
person team event
that is fun and
spirited. There
are refreshments, a
panel of judges, the ever so talented
Mr. Jason Koler as our charismatic
Emcee, and a crowd of rooters / hecklers
to make it just that much more fun.
Prizes are awarded for 'Best Team

for 'Best Spellers'. Who can take the

You don't have to be a native conch to
celebrate Conchtoberfest. Just kayak,
cruise, walk, bike or drive over to Hawks
Cay Resort September 30th through
October 2nd and earn your conch status
by helping us celebrate the sights,
sounds, flavors and laid-back lifestyle
of the Florida Keys. Live island tunes
will echo the shoreline each day; fresh,
regional dishes and ice cold drinks will
be served by talented local chefs; exciting games and contests will keep the kids
entertained; and it will all take place at
the beautiful Hawks Cay Resort on Duck
Key, in the center of the Florida Keys.
We know you'll have a blast the entire
Conchtoberfest weekend, but you may
want to start the celebration a few
nights early! Join us for Conchtoberfest
Nights. Each evening during the week
building up to Conchtoberfest, a local
establishment will hold a themed event
to celebrate the Keys and raise money
for local charities.

Dear Friends of Crane Point Museum
and Nature Center,
As you may know, the Florida Keys
Land and Sea Trust is preparing to
embark on a very exciting and dynamic
educational program; one that we
believe provides a new solution to
many of the long-term challenges
that Crane Point has faced for
numerous years.
Our proposed Eco Adventure Canopy
Tour has been in development for the
past two years and at this time, most
of the details of the project and
program have been carefully worked
out. We are very excited about our
new project and believe that it will
not only benefit Crane Point, but the
City of Marathon as well.

Last week John Henderson, Crane

City Council to support our project

the presentation, the Marathon City
Council voted unanimously to place
the request on their August 9, 2011

We realize that many of you were

Keating Sport Fishing
was established in Marathon in 1987.
It is owned and operated by Capt.
Richard Keating. It provides light tackle
fishing opportunities for Tarpon, Permit,
and Bonefish as well as many other
species found on the Flats of the Florida
Keys. We can accommodate the
advanced Angler as well as the novice
and provide professional instruction for
each. Whether you choose the special
challenge of fly fishing or light tackle
fishing with a spinning rod you will be
provided with top of the line equipment, flies, and bait.
Generally, you will fish Marathon,
Big Pine, and Sugarloaf area, however
depending on the weather, wind, tides,
and the targeted species; we may range
from Key Largo to Key West to insure
that you get the best opportunity on
any given day. Also, from November to
January we will fish the waters of
Everglades National Park for Snook,
Redfish, Trout, and Tarpon.
The number one goal is to get you to
the fish that you want to land, make
sure that you have a great time doing it,
and bring you back happy and satisfied.
You will have a great time on the water,
guaranteed!

Kudos !
Letters from Our Visitors
7/13/11
Just wanted to thank all marathon locals for an amazing
two weeks. We utilized many of the local restaurants,
Tilden's dive shop, boat rentals, Publix, various bait shops.
All treated our group exceptional well. We visited 4th of July
festivities based on the information you had provided via the
chamber news letter. Attended the city park festivities,
parade, watermelon eating contest (my son took home the
medal!) and fireworks. I have shared your news letter with
our own tourism commission here in Flagstaff as an example.
Hopefully see you next year!
