July / August 2016 Renfrew Reflections 5 RENFREW COMMUNITY NEWS Renfrew Stampede Day Traffic Update by Dennis Laird, Traffic Director Saturday July 9th 9am-noon and 3pm-midnight It’s that time of year again: Stampede! And Renfrew knows how to do it up right. The “best Stampede Party in the whole city” is fun for the entire family. It begins in the morning with a fantastic free ‘the works’ pancake breakfast and live music. After enjoying breakfast, children will want to take in the Kids’ Carnival complete with bouncy castles, carnival games and prizes. And it doesn’t end there! In the afternoon and evening, there is an outdoor beer garden and BBQ complete with live music and dancing. The horseshoe tournament will begin at 3 pm this year so don’t be late! Children are welcome in the beer gardens until 9 pm. Volunteers always needed for this huge event. Have fun and meet new people in the neighbourhood! All volunteers receive vouchers that can be redeemed for a meal and drink. If you can spare some time either the day before the 9th, the day of the event or for tear down on the 10th, contact Mikki: [email protected] or come to the Hall for the Orientation – Pizza Party on June 22nd at 6 pm. See y’all there! More details about the event itself will be showing up over the next few days on the website (www.renfrewcommunity.ca) and Facebook page so share it with your friends and family and help us spread the word! Renfrew truly is a community that cares - Yahoo! I would like to introduce myself as the new traffic coordinator for the community. In my first correspondence to the community, I would like to advise residents that the City of Calgary and Alberta Transportation are working together to study Deerfoot Trail. The study will make recommendations for both short- and long-term improvements. Recommendations for short-term improvements will be made in early 2017 so they can be considered for funding in the next three to five years. The study will also recommend a long-term improvement plan in early 2018 to manage growth over the next 30 years. As this is a vital artery that borders our community, I encourage community members to learn about this project and to provide input. For more information, please go to http://engage.calgary.ca/deerfoot or contact 311. In the meantime, if you have any traffic concerns within Renfrew, please do not hesitate to email me at renfrew.traffi[email protected] Enjoy the summer and drive safe! Ward 9 Update by Councilor Gian-Carlo Carra As we get ready to enjoy the summer months and reconnect with friends and family, I wanted to take this opportunity to give you all a heads up with events that are happening both in our Ward and in Calgary. On Canada Day, July 1, there will be lots of events for all ages. On Prince’s Island, there will be two opportunities to explore Canada’s heritage through the Aboriginal Show Case and through meeting members of our Canadian military. 6 Renfrew Reflections July / August 2016 At historic Fort Calgary, come on down for a free t-shirt to take part in the annual group selfie where we recreate the Canadian Flag. Down on Riverfront Avenue, you can experience rich francophone heritage with the evening ending with fireworks at the Centre Street Bridge. If you have your walking shoes on, during the day, you can stop by Olympic Plaza and view the market. Just down the street on Stephen Avenue Walk, view the usual fare, plus the additional live entertainment and events that will be taking place. If you haven’t been to Studio Bell, home of the National Music Centre, there will be free admission and gifts for the first 500 visitors who attend. For more details on those Canada Day events, go to calgary.ca/CanadaDay. You aren’t limited to these events to enjoy your city and neighbourhoods. Your community associations do great work all year. With Stampede season starting soon, it’s a great time to get better acquainted with them and the work they do on your behalf. Please check out their websites and read through their newsletters for their Stampede breakfasts, the other events they will be holding over the summer, and the things they are preparing for in Fall 2016. Community Websites Tuxedo Park tuxedoparkcommunity.ca Renfrew renfrewcommunity.ca Winston Heights-Mountview winstonheights.ca Renfrew Community Garden Update by Heike Pauli/Lisa Mulder Co-chairs Renfrew Community Garden Committee) Hurray, summer is here….no more frosty cold nights having to cover up your freshly planted veggies or days of rain wondering, if your plants will float away .…Our committee has been keeping busy. Monthly meetings coming up with fundraising strategies and finalizing the garden design plan with the help of landscape architects reGenerate Design. Their team has been instrumental in choosing a design that’s not only pleasing to the eye, but also practical and addressing natural “hazards” such as wind and wildlife (freeloading bunnies & deer). Thank you to Lindsay, Luke and Adrian for their continuous guidance and hard work! We are taking a break from regular meetings during the summer months (next meeting Friday, Sept. 9). Instead, we have taken on a great community project. Every second week starting June 8, we are meeting at the Stanley Jones School garden for weeding and general maintenance. For more information on dates and how to join us for this project, please go to www.renfrewcommunitygarden.wordpress.com. And finally, but most importantly, the community garden has become tangible…we have moved a small garden box from the back of the RCA community centre and moved it to the future garden site on Edward Street & Phair Avenue. It’s a humble beginning, but it is a beginning! Ceremoniously, the committee members along with some eager future gardeners came together and planted a variety of veggies and some flowers. We are hoping for a great harvest this fall! And in closing, you can always find more information on our website or email us at [email protected]. We are also on Facebook! Contact Christine at [email protected] Renfrew Reflections July / August 2016 July / August 2016 Renfrew Reflections 11 RENFREW COMMUNITY NEWS Green Carts Green Cart set to roll out next spring After a successful pilot that saw a 40 per cent drop in garbage and 89 per cent satisfaction amongst residents, the Green Cart Program will roll out to all single family homes beginning next spring. All communities should have the service by fall 2017. Here are the highlights: - All food, yard and pet waste is accepted in the program. - Unlimited quantity. Use paper yard waste bags for extra yard waste that doesn’t fit in the cart. - Green and blue carts will be collected on the same day every week. - Black carts will be picked up once every two weeks on a separate day since most household waste can be recycled or composted. Residents will receive everything they need to get started including the green cart, a kitchen pail for collecting food scraps inside the home; a sample of compostable bags for the kitchen pail and 12 Renfrew Reflections yard waste bags. Once service begins, households will pay $6.50 per month. This charge reflects the savings achieved by changing black cart garbage collection from weekly to once every two weeks. Green carts go beyond backyard composting If you’re already backyard composting, keep it up. Use your green cart for all the other materials that cannot be composted at home like meat, bones, shellfish, dairy, weeds and pet waste. Why we need to keep food and yard waste out of landfills It may be hard to believe, but more than half of residential garbage is food and yard waste. Composting this material is the right thing to do. When food and yard waste is buried in the landfill it releases methane, a greenhouse gas that is 25 times stronger than carbon dioxide. By using the green carts we reduce dependence on our landfills, reduce greenhouse gas and turn food and yard waste into nutrient-rich compost.
