Message to the Community...
from the RCA Board of Directors
We are hoping that by the time this newsletter reaches your homes, summer will finally
have arrived! As your community association representatives, we have been working through
not only the details of various building and land issues, but as well have been trying to think
ahead toward the community planning we would like
to start in the Fall. On that note, if you have any ideas
or thoughts you would like to share regarding what
you see as a need or opportunity for your Renfrew
community, we would love to hear from you. This
can include ideas for programs, design of physical
spaces and uses of outdoor spaces. Feedback that we
receive now will help us shape the questions on our
upcoming survey. You can contact us at: executive@
renfrewcommunity.ca. If you would like to help in
this Planning for the Future initiative during October
and November, please provide your name and contact
information to Jill Lockerbie, memberships and volunteer. Jill can be reached at: membershi
[email protected]
You will likely receive this newsletter just before our annual Stampede Day celebration.
The Stampede Day Committee, led by Irena Lenders, has worked hard to plan for yet another
outstanding community event. Thank you to our Stampede Day planners. If you have time
during the day on July 10th to play games with your children, or if you would like to listen to
western tunes in the evening while enjoying a cold beer, the Renfrew Stampede Day should
be added to your calendar!
Around the community hall there have been a number of initiatives underway to clarify
how we do things, including the use of space and the training of some of our volunteers. We
will soon be embarking upon a lifecycle review of our building and we hope to include some
space design and upgrade opportunities in this process.

RCA TRAFFIC
The News
CALGARY - Police and emergency crews
Photograph by: Colleen De Neve, Calgary Herald
were on the scene this morning of a fatal vehicle accident in the Renfrew area.
A Jeep SUV left the road, scraped a tree
near the corner of Child Avenue and 10th
Street N.E., and slammed into the side of a
bungalow around 1:30 a.m.
The vehicle caught fire, leaving the house
visibly scorched.
The body of a driver was removed from the truck’s destroyed passenger compartment about
6:15 a.m.
Investigators closed off the area and set up markers on the scene to show the path of the
truck as it left the street and crossed the lawn.
Dylan Barwis, 27, lives in the neighbourhood and recounted what he heard.
... Barwis, at his computer at the time, ran down to the scene with a fire extinguisher after
seeing the SUV “completely in flames.” He also described the house that was hit as “pretty
badly torn up.”
He added that it is not uncommon to see vehicles speed down that stretch of 10th Street N.E.

Our Question(s)
“...could you give me an update on receiving traffic counts on 8th Avenue?
Please note the article outline below and the residents comments about speeding not being unusual ….. a common sentiment. I would like to discuss at your convenience.
Thanks
Peter Goemans, Chair
Renfrew Traffic Committee”
Note: Speed of traffic and volume of traffic in our neighbourhood have been ongoing concerns for the RCA Traffic Committee. Numerous requests to have a comprehensive traffic
survey done have been delayed due to the 16th Avenue Widening Project.
Response
“Peter,
#1 Correct. I will pass along the count information once I’ve received it from our data
collection group.
#2 The counts will collect volume, and speed (average, low end, high end and 85th
percentile speeds as well as speeds during zone hours specifically if the count is conducted
within a playground or school zone)
#3 I understand your request for additional counts on 8 Ave. This location will be added
to the list and will be conducted as time and resources permit. It is most likely this can occur
while the closure of St. Georges Dr is in effect. I will keep you informed.
#4 I look forward to updates on activities the community decides to take part in. Please
also consider working with the police liaison for your community for increased enforcement
if you have particular speeding concerns.”
Note: Although the pace of progress is often frustrating, your volunteer RCA Traffic
Committee continues to seek solutions to traffiic concerns in your Renfrew community.

You may also have noticed that the snowplow truck is gone. After looking at all options,
the board decided that it was simpler to use
the snow blower for regular snow removal
and an outside firm for the more challenging
snow days. Also in order to protect the winter
tot lot users from any errant hockey shots,
we hope to soon have a protective chain link
fence at the south end of the skating rink.
By the time the summer has ended we will
have our long awaited wall of hand prints,
dedicated to the individuals who donated
funds and time to the children’s playground.
Thank you to Caroline Swinn and the 10th
Avenue Block Party residents for raising over
$200 on June 5th in support of this specific
initiative. This was a wonderful example of
community support and a fabulous family
event. (See page 12)
In closing, we hope you have a fantastic
and warm summer. Our next general meeting
will be held on the last Tuesday of August at
7pm. We would love to see you there!

10th Annual Renfrew
The 10th Annual Renfrew Spring Clean Up is now in the history books.
What has become a tradition is an amazing event the whole community
supports and is the envy of all other Calgary Communities. From start to
finish over 70 people volunteer their time to make this year’s Clean Up
the success that it was. Again this year we restricted applicants and yet
we still picked up 80 loads totalling over 40,000 lb’s. Way to go Renfrew,
you guys set the standard for Clean Up’s in Calgary. Nobody does it like
we do!
This year’s pickup of over 40,000 pounds of refuse was separated
and recycled as appropriate. Tires, car batteries, propane cylinders,
microwaves, engine oil, fridges and paint were all taken to the Forest
Lawn Dump for proper disposal. All metals such as stoves and bicycles
were recycled with Calgary Metals. The balance of the garbage was
disposed of in three City of Calgary compactor trucks.
This project would not be the success it is without the continued help and
support of our partners. Special thanks to the City of Calgary’s Parks and
Recreation, Waste and Recycling, and Bylaw Services divisions. Without
their help this would be a much smaller project.
The City of Calgary Parks and Receration is one of the main reasons that
this project is such a success. From the beginning Byron Stephen has
helped in getting Parks and Recreation on board. The City of Calgary
volunteer drivers are an integral part of running a smooth and effective
Clean Up. Thanks once more to Al Christian, Diane Neil, Guy Nelson, Ron
Geredi, and Ron Chisasson, for your continued participation.
You can’t have an event like this without a tremendous group of
volunteers. I owe a great debt of gratitude to Ron Powers and my lovely
daughter Shannan who covered for me while I was out of country to attend
‘specialized physiotherapy’ to test the success of my recent surgey. (Nice
cover job Leo, but NO I wasn’t at the Mayo Clinic. )
The Renfrew Tiny Tots were this year’s sponsor and what a force they are
becoming. It is great to see that the Tiny Tots Playgroup has becoming
such an important element within Renfrew. Many thanks to Leora JohnsonShaman and her team for their support.

Spring Clean Up
This year our recycling project has reduced its ecological footprint. You
may have noticed that no flyers were delivered this year, with no affect on
registration. The City has previously pointed out that over the past nine
years we have delivered approximately 30,000 registration flyers.
I received a lot of comments about the use of the Community mailbox for
the registrations and cheques. This has been dually noted for changes in
next year’s registration.
Thanks to Alderman Joe Ceci for providing the safety vests again this
year. I understand from Joe that they were particular good for the younger
volunteers. As most of you know Joe is not running for Alderman this
term. Joe has always been a great supporter of Renfrew and I would like
to take this opportunity to thank him for all his work. Another Alderman
who represented this ward previously may also step aside this year. Bob
Hawkesworth has had a long tradition with Renfrew and we would like to
thank him for his years of service,
Speaking about years of service there are two gentlemen and one lady who
have recently stepped aside after many years of service to the Renfrew
Community. Gerry Gammel, Ron Powers and Sandy Gilkes have served
this community admirable over the past number of years. Their combined
years of service to Renfrew is hard to imagine - the legacy that they have
left is not. The Renfrew Community Association is one of the strongest
community associations in Calgary. The past Executive Committee (Ron,
Jerry, Sandy, Peter, and Paula) have turned over a community association
is in excellent shape financially and with a pretty good infrastructure. Ron
Powers and company have done an outstanding job over the past number
of years and I personally would like to thank all of you, for your years of
volunter service to the village. Fiscal responsibility will be your legacy.
July/August 2010
We are also lucky to have a new, dynamic President in Karen Snyder.
Karen, along with 1st Vice President Denise Leckie (of the Tiny Tots
Playground Committee), and Linda Holt as Treasurer join returning board
members Peter Holt (2nd VP) and Paula Smith (Secretary) to provide
our Executive Board with a dynamic new look. Renfrew is very lucky in
having such strong Executive where new ideas are coupled with years of
experience.
Oop’s I digress, back to the clean up. The volunteers that helped out in this
year’s Clean Up include the following, in no particular order. I apologize
for anyone we missed:
Lindsay Cook, Al Christianson, Byron Stephen, Gord Powers, Randy and
Josh Herdman, Guy Nelson, Paul Johns, Therese, Jason and Shannan
Daley, David Weisgerber, Richard Janzen, Maryanne Umbsaar, Vickie
Irwin, Brent Baksza, Jerry Galloway, Tom Douglas, Bruce Michie, Don
Darren, Jonathan and Jenelle Umbsaar, Denise Leckie, Ron Powers, the
Goodbrand’s, Klye, Lori, Lindsay, and Rod, Rod Hunter, Kate Jaenicke,
Laurie Marsh, our cooks Bruce and Nicole McCoy, David, Jasen, Deb and
Jerry Kotlewski, Michael Loboldus, Cody Shaw, Victor Martinez, James
McIntosh, Jeff and Conni Haney, Joel and Brendon Kerber, Michael Aebler,
Brett and Meagan Giebelhaus, Rick Johnson, Henry Tam, Tanya Huynh,
Shane Stephen, Dennis Kazakoff, Shane Franklin, Scott Muirhead, Anne
Marie Chantal, Leora Johnson-Shaman, Diane Neil, and Ken Shamanis.
This year’s award for largest family attendance goes to the Adria’s. Peter,
Caleb, Victor, Victoria, Louisa, and Sheryl-Anne Adria all showed up.
Again this year, special thanks for The Renfrew Baptist Church for helping
out. THANK YOU EVERYONE who showed up and helped out. You guys,
gals and kids made it a great Renfrew Day!

of property taxes
No one likes to pay property taxes,
but there are some breaks for low-income
homeowners and those who find it easier to
manage monthly instalments.
The City of Calgary’s Property Tax
Assistance Program will reimburse the
increase in taxes between 2009 and 2010 for
eligible homeowners. The difference will be
credited to the individual’s tax account to
offset this year’s taxes.
“It’s not a lot but every little bit can help,
particularly for low-income homeowners,”
says Susan Fernando, coordinator for The
City of Calgary’s Property Tax Assistance
Program. Seventy-five percent of last year’s
program participants said the program
helped them stay within their budget.
For details on income guidelines and other
eligibility criteria, visit calgary.ca/propertytax
or call 3-1-1. Eligible homeowners can
complete the application form online, or
through 3-1-1. The deadline for applying is
Dec. 31, 2010.
All homeowners, regardless of income,
can sign up for the Tax Instalment Payment
Plan (TIPP). Through this program, annual
property taxes are spread over equal monthly
payments. This can be a big help in managing
a monthly budget.
Property tax dollars help make Calgary
a great city for everyone. Taxes allow for a
bounty of City parks, leisure centres, pools,
arenas, golf courses, and arts centres. They
contribute to hundreds of annual festivals
and events that showcase this city’s collective
knack for hosting a great time.
Property taxes also work to keep citizens
safe, and provide the social programs and
services that help make communities strong.
The City of Calgary uses property taxes to
leverage funding partnerships with other
levels of government, private sector and notfor-profit organizations.
For more information on what your taxes
are doing to build quality of life in Calgary,
visit the City Living pages on calgary.ca. There
you will also find information on other City
of Calgary subsidy programs for low-income
residents. People without internet access can
get the same information by calling 3-1-1.

Editor’s MESSAGE
I used to be on page 3, then page 11 - now page 13! Soon I’ll
be back by the classified ads! S’up wit dat!
The Meet the Board gathering at the Renfrew Social Room was
quite well attended, Still, I would have liked a chance to meet more
folks from Renfrew. Maybe this will become an annual get-together.
The appetizers were delicious and I had a chance to meet a few Leo (long ago) Smith, Editor
Renfrew Reflections
Ward 9 Alderman candidates.
The next big challenge for the RCA is the successful hosting of our annual Stampede
Family Day. We’ve got a great team of volunteers working in sub-committees under the
leadership of our Stampede Committee Chair, Irena Lenders. It takes a small army to make
the day happen so thanks to all the people who stepped forwarded and volunteered.
There’s always the need for a few extra hands, especially with the set-up and take-down. If you
can help please contact Jill at [email protected] or call 403-230-7055.
There’s also a Park ‘n Play and a Stay ‘n Play program coming to Renfrew in the middle
of July (see page 7). Theses are free programs for kids and their parents so you should check
them out. The cost of these programs are shared between the RCA and the City of Calgary.
I’m looking forward to summer - we all deserve a break after the wet Spring we endured.
You should see my jungle - I mean yard, it’s scary! There’s some major yard work to do. Anyone
interested in a free exercise program? Just kidding. it’s something I need to do for myself.
On behalf of the Renfrew Community Association I would like to wish one and all a
safe, fun and happy summer. We don’t hold a meeting in July but maybe we’ll see you at our
August 31st General Meeting. All are welcome.

TINY TOT PLAYGROUP YEAR END UPDATE
Another year has concluded for the RCA Tiny Tots Playgroup as we
do not meet through the summer months of July and August. It has
been a record year for our group in many ways. Attendance began last
September with approximately 12 children on Thursday mornings. In
January, we expanded the program to two mornings a week which was
well received. At the end of June, we were seeing close to 30 children
at Playgroup twice a week with a contact list of nearly 100 children!
Our Halloween, Christmas, Valentines, Easter and Earth Day parties
and craft days were a huge success. Of course, our greatest attendance
occurred during those events. Our fundraising efforts also produced
record numbers with our popular Tiny Tots Sale in April, the RCA
Spring Clean Up and our Tiny Tot Play Groupie Tshirt sales. We
were also the recipient of a generous donation from Talisman Energy
through their “Investing in Our Communities Program” as a result of
the volunteer work (with our group) of one of our Tiny Tots Families.
This year we also created our own webpage (which I think you’d find
interesting) on the Renfrew Community Website. As a result of
this fantastic growth, I was no longer able to manage the program
as a lone volunteer and have since recruited some amazing talents
to assist me. Positions of Entertainment Co-ordinator, Toy Steward,
Volunteer/Directory Co-ordinator and Website/Graphics/Newsletter
Co-ordinator have been created and filled. I will continue as the
Chair of the Tiny Tots Playgroup along with my many remaining
duties. As a committee we are looking forward to taking this program
into the next year with Playgroup starting again in September. Thank
you to all of you who have contributed and supported our playgroup.
We appreciate your efforts.
Have a good summer and see you in September!

COMMUNITY SAFETY
I received a phone message the other day from the PCAP
messaging system which concerned me enough to write this
article.
There is a program from the Calgary Police Service that will
inform residents when there is recurring criminal activity happening
in our community. The program is called ‘Police & Community
Awareness Program’ (PCAP, formerly known as PACT) which is a
proven, effective crime prevention tool. Residents of a community
are advised, by way of a phone message, whenever to be cautious of
criminal activity in their area, or occasionally requesting assistance
in cases of missing children. Sort of an APB, but especially of
particular importance to an area in the City. You can become
involved by joining Block Watch or signing up on the Calgary
Police Service web site.
The message stated there is an increase in the number of reported
‘social disorder’ incidents in our area namely Renfrew, Bridgeland
and Crescent Heights. The cause of this increase is due to residents
placing bottles and returnable items in the blue recycle bins. The
Calgary Police Service is asking residents to stop doing this as it is
encouraging an element into the community that is categorized as
‘social disorder’.
Placing returnable items in your blue bin is akin to leaving cash
on your door step and the act of removing them is theft. Once
this cash outlet is discovered, they will be back and most likely not
alone. It will only lead to an escalation of criminal activity in our
community.
I know I’ve discussed this with some people in the neighbourhood
and they think of this as a charitable act. Well I say, donate the
funds to an accredited agency, a far more charitable act, rather than
inviting prowling, theft and break-ins on to my street.
With summer here again, I ask that everybody please be vigilant
in watching your block and reporting any suspicious activity to the
police. Have a great summer.
Social Disorder, as taken from the Calgary Police Service
web site, includes the following: drunk, disturbance, indecent
act, juvenile complaint, landlord/tenant dispute, mental health
concern, neighbour dispute, party complaint, prowler, suspicious
person, threats, drugs, noise complaint, possible gun shots,
unwanted guest, prostitution, abandoned auto, speeder, suspicious
auto, and shots fired.

YOUR HOME WOULD LOOK GOOD
ADVERTISED HERE!
Renfrew/Regal Terrace has become very busy with
new development as people discover what a wonderful
community we have here. A large part of that is the fact
that as our older residents move into condominiums or
smaller homes, their adult children are coming back and
re-developing or remodeling the homes they grew up in
so their kids can enjoy the same advantages that they did
with all levels of schools within walking distance, lots of
recreation opportunities and the convenience of living in
an inner-city “Community that Cares”.
Sold in one day!
Keith provides friendly advice, and NO COST market
evaluations. If you are thinking of selling, call anytime.
If you’d simply like to be informed about recent sales or
want to find out what the asking price of a listing is, I’d
be happy to provide that information as a courtesy to my
neighbors.
