July 2010 Mission Statement
July 2010 Established 1977 The official publication of Somerset Singles Social, Ski & Golf Club Member, Metropolitan Detroit Ski Council Do you ever wonder what goes on behind the scenes? It could be behind the scenes of a sporting event, or a play, or a concert. It even could be behind the scenes of the SKOLFER. Judy Benn needs to have all her information up to date regarding the Meet and Greets. Before she has this information, she has researched the bars and restaurants then the flyers are made. All any of you have to do once a month is sit back, open the Skolfer and start reading. It’s almost like magic. Anything and everything you ever wanted to know as to what is going on with Somerset is right at your fingertips. All you have to do is……….READ IT. Any news that I hear about that is newsworthy goes into the Newz Room along with Bill Bellinger’s ―Look Whose Talking‖. Before Bill’s interview is made public, it also needs to be run past me for approval. Now………… we may not have the publication like the News or the Free Press has but we certainly do cater to our members. I believe that we have one of the best club newsletters around. The best part is it doesn’t cost you one extra cent to read it and be informed. It does cost the club a lot to put it out each and every month without fail. One of the disappointing aspects of the newsletter is when someone asks a question about an event or some other point of interest and right away, I know they did not read the newsletter. When I make mention of that fact, I get…………… ―I don’t read it. I just take out the golf schedule‖. What about all the other important tidbits of information???? Let me just run this by you. Many members of the board are involved with one aspect or another of putting together the newsletter. It really starts the beginning of every month. The data base is kept current by Jim South to make sure that the address labels are correct for mailing, and then they are printed. This is for the 240 members that we have. Paula Ortago, Golf Director, must make sure the golf schedule is correct along with any other information regarding golf that is going to be put into the newsletter. Before any information or flyers are put in the newsletter, they must be sent to me for approval. If it is ski season, Chris Luhrs, Ski Director, writes an article and puts out information regarding ski trips. Any board member who is involved with something regarding the club needs to put an article out about it after sending it to me. Social Director, Bobbie Mathie, needs to make sure that the flyers for all social events are accurate and in the newsletter 2 months before the event. I usually end up doing the flyers if no one else can. Jim South creates the ―New Members‖ page along with any other changes in member’s personal information. He also makes sure that the birthday page is up to date and accurate. He also puts in the ―want ads‖ and makes sure that the ―upcoming event‖ page is accurate. Then, of course, I need to do the ―Message from the Prez‖ which doesn’t always come easy, along with other information that you need to know about. Once all of this is approved and finalized, Jim South has the privilege of putting all of this together to make sure that it all fits on 20 pages. Everything needs to be given to him by the 15th of the month which gives him about 5 days to put it all into a mock up so he can move it around and fit it all in. After this is all done, it is sent to me for final approval then it is off to the printer. Depending on when our Board meeting is and when the newsletter needs to be in your hands, the board will meet a half hour before a board meeting (last Tuesday of the month) to fold, stamp and seal all 240 newsletters. Then a board member will volunteer to take this to the post office so each of you can have it before the end of the month. If you never read another thing in your life, please read your monthly newsletter. You have no idea the blood, sweat and tears it takes to get this to you. We do it out of love………..so love us back and READ what takes us almost a month to put together. Thank you Rosalie Mission Statement The purpose of Somerset Singles Social, Ski & Golf Club is to create friendships and to make a positive difference in the lives of our single members; We socialize, ski, golf, and just have fun. Thank you for your support Rosalie June Membership Meeting Update Our Summer Celebration Meeting was held June 8th. Despite being downstairs in the San Marino Clubhouse and a few rain drops, we had an attendance of almost 100. We all managed to have a great time dancing to the music of Dick Gerathy and comparing notes on our best golf game and what we have all been up to since summer finally arrived. We had 24 guests sign in and the free membership promotion was awarded to Al Knoblock. Al was a member many years ago—welcome back Al! Please extend a warm welcome to all our new members: Mary Chavers, Terry Mike, Brenda Gagnon, Deb Jordan, Jeanette Maison, Gail Selaty, Tom Clark and Al Knoblock. Keep spreading the word about what a great club Somerset is for everyone. Thanks for all your support on buying 50/50 tickets. John Weiler was the big winner along with Roger Brouckaert, Rosalie Walsh and one of our first time guests. Congratulations to everyone! Remember that your referral of a new member will get you $7.00 in Somerset Bucks. You can put them towards outings and membership dues. For those of you still not familiar with how Somerset Bucks work, please read about it in this newsletter. Also, remember to promote joining Somerset to your friends to win a $15.00 gift certificate towards an upcoming activity. There will be a new winner each month through November. Don’t forget our next meeting; July 13th will be our Chinese Auction. Please bring an unwrapped item new or slightly used. Please mark your calendar and join your friends and fellow club members for a night of fun and dancing at the beautiful San Marino Club. See you on July 13th! He used to ski but has had some difficulty with his knees over the past few years and does not believe that they can support involvement in both sports. While he no longer goes to monthly meetings on a regular basis, he still attends on occasion and takes part in a number of the social events that the Club sponsors. In addition to Somerset, Mike is a member of the American Legion, a consequence of his three years in the U.S. Army. He spent his formative years in Mt Clemens where he lived next to the Hillcrest Country Club. He reports that he was too busy swimming, and playing football and baseball to be interested in golf while growing up. However, he did spend time as a caddie at the Country Club. In addition, he shagged balls for a number of the pros who frequented the Course during tournaments and special events. Mike currently lives on the west side in Canton Township. He has one son and two granddaughters, ages 11 and 15. Last summer he and Judy Krantz, his 'significant other' and Somerset member, took the girls up to Mackinac Island. He expects that they will take a similar trip elsewhere this summer. Mike operates his own business making specialized parts for cars and boats used for racing. He is one of those fortunate people who have been able to combine his vocation with his avocation. Early in life he became interested in racing cars and later boats. He says that he used his occupation as a tool and die welder to support his hobbies of racing dragsters and hydroplanes. He started racing dragsters and after considerable success, including a national championship, he "got his foot in the door" of hydroplane racing. After winning several national championships racing hydroplanes, he says that the costs in time and money exceeded his desire to continue at that level of participation. However, he remains associated with both types of racing through his business of designing and manufacturing customized parts. Mike takes great pride in producing a quality product and delivering it on time. Even though the current economy in Michigan is weak, his business is going strong and he is "busier than ever‖. In addition to the monetary rewards the work is very satisfying in terms of the feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment it gives him to develop his ideas and watch them bear fruit, especially when they result in the winning of a race. Mike didn't start playing golf until the late 1980's, about the same time his active racing career was winding down. It appears that the same desire to excel characteristic of his racing career and his commitment to work has been translated to the golf course. He is an excellent golfer, one of those who set the standard for the rest of us to emulate. While work and golf currently predominate, he says that maybe after he retires he'll do some hunting and fishing and perhaps a little traveling. Mike is truly 'one of the nice guys' and the Club is very fortunate to have him as a member. Member Information July meeting – Chinese Auction night – Bring items new or slightly used for auction. Event: Picnic Mem Non-Mem Meet & Greet at Santino’s in May MEMBERSHIP DRIVE CONTEST – GOAL IS 275/300 MEMBERS BY END OF YEAR. Just for your information, for the months of April and May, we had 20 new members. At this rate we will definitely reach our goal. But we can’t slack off. Remember, we are in competition with every other singles club out there. For the month of June, our new member, who won our drawing is Al Knoblock. Since no one sponsored him, no one won the $15 gift certificate. Al was a member many years ago and decided to come back and attend our June meeting. This was definitely his lucky night. So far so good……..we are on our way to reaching our goal……remember we can’t do this without YOU and YOU and YOU. I am having the article that went into last month’s newsletter reprinted because I want all of you to know that we mean business and we are on a roll. If we can get somewhere in the neighborhood of 6-8 new members a month, we will reach our reachable goal. ************************************************************************************************* The Board of Directors is going full steam ahead with a Membership Drive Contest. We realize that even though Somerset may be the best singles club out there, we are in heavy competition with many other clubs. For this reason we are going to have a contest that will run from May through November with the winner being announced at the December meeting. The winner will receive a nice prize for all their efforts. All you have to do to win is bring in the most members. Cut out the ―Get in Free‖ pass that is printed somewhere within this newsletter, make copies of it and give them out to your friends to come to one of our monthly meetings. This pass will be printed in every newsletter until November. Every month we will randomly draw one pass for a guest to win a free membership with Somerset. If your name is on the pass that we draw, not only will your guest win the free membership but you will receive a gift certificate valued up to $15 to be used towards any of our upcoming social events. This is a ―MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN‖ contest. There isn’t any limit to the amount of gift certificates that you could win. If you bring 10 guests to a meeting, then you have 10 chances of winning the gift certificate. If your guest is there and wins and you are not, then only the guest will win the free membership and no one will win the gift certificate. Just think, if all of your guests join, you will still receive $7.00 in Somerset Bucks for each new member and a great chance of becoming the grand prize winner in November. We need all the members to join in with us on this Membership Drive. This is not a one person show. In order for this show to be a ―sell out‖, it needs all of us working together as a team to bring in as many new members as we can. Somerset has been around for over 34 years and it needs new members to stay alive and competitive. Lets get going and start doing the Rah………..rah……….rah. Rosalie Shambles at Sugarbush Thank you fellow golfers for converting all of my time consuming work into a fun filled day of Shambles. As it turns out I was not the only one that had a great time. Many of you took the time to let me know how much you enjoyed and appreciated the outing and that means a lot to me. Also, again the mystery draw for scores proved to be the fair way to determine winners as the scores were very, very close. Two teams tied to share the prize money. The winners included: Jim South, Bobbie Mathie, Frank Killian, and Linda Schiller along with: Don Capozzoli, Rosalie Walsh, Al Krol and Carole Sipila. Congratulations all!! If all goes as I would like we will hopefully have another game of Shambles on September 6, 2010/Labor Day. Once again my friends I would like to say ―Thank You‖. It is all of you that contribute to making our outings successful. Paula Any news of yourself or a Somerset member, PLEASE contact Rosalie Walsh at 586-783-3299 Jan Farrell is a grandmother again!! Her son Matt and his wife Jessica had new daughter on May 27th, Sylvie Rose Farrell. This makes one boy and two girls for them. Plus, she also has another granddaughter and 11 step-grandchildren. Congratulations Jan Did you know our one and only, Dan Nixon, won the Best Mustache contest at the Romeo Victorian Festival which was held in May. Next time you see Dan: take a look at that award winning mustache. You will then see just why he won. Congratulations Dan. Keep it growing!!!! Remember, if I don’t get the newz, I can’t report it. Send me an e-mail and I will make sure your extended family (Somerset) hears all about it. Somerset Bucks is a tool that was created by Jim South as an incentive to increase our membership by inviting single friends and acquaintances to join Somerset Singles Social, Ski and Golf Club. Each ―Somerset Bucks‖ certificate has a value of $7.00 and can be used towards membership renewal, social activities and any golf or ski outing. It cannot be used toward entry into a monthly membership meeting, or any single or optional golf days. To earn ―Somerset Bucks‖ simply introduce someone to the club. Should he/she decide to join Somerset, resulting from your efforts, they will write your name on the top of their application when they apply for membership. Once approved, you will receive your Somerset Bucks either by mail or handed to you at a general Membership Meeting. (These Bucks will expire one year from date of issue). There isn’t any limit as to how many ―bucks‖ you can earn. The more you earn, the lesser the cost is to you for an event. Take advantage of this offer and start looking for new members. There are many single people out there who would like to become a member of Somerset; they just don’t know it. It’s up to you to tell them and bring them to a meeting. Remember, it’s ―money‖ in your pocket Pat Miller Membership Director Upcoming Events July July July July July July July July July July July July July July July 1 3 4 7 8 10-12 13 15 18 21 22 25 27 29 30 *Thurs Sat *Sun *Wed Thurs *********** Tue *Thurs *Sun *Wed Thurs *Sun Tue *Thurs Fri 11:00 am ??? 11:00 am 11:00 am 5:30 pm *********** 8:00 pm 11:00 am 11:00 am 11:04 am 6:00 pm 11:00 am 6:30 pm 11:00 am 5:30 pm GOLF at Mulberry Hills (C) Boat outing at Metropolitan Beach on Lake St. Clair GOLF at Marysville (F) GOLF at Shepherds Hollow (C) Meet & Greet at Green Light TaverN in Sterling Hts. on 16 Mile GOLF weekend at The Resort of Tulymore and St. Ives Membership Meeting / Dance at San Marino Club (CHINESE AUCTION) GOLF at Richmond Forest (F) GOLF at The Fountains (C) GOLF at Cherry Creek (C) Ethnic dinner of the month at Andiamo Lakefront Bistro on Jefferson GOLF at Faulkwood Shores (F) Board Meeting at Red, Hot and Blue GOLF at Mystic Creek (C) Somerset invites you to Hazel Park Raceway in Hazel Park FIRST CLASS MAIL SOMERSET SINGLES HOTLINE 586-307-3930 Internet address: http//www.graynwhite.com/sg MDSC Web Address: www.mdscski.org Somerset Singles Social, Ski & Golf Club c/o Jim South 59212 Conifer Ct.
