On Saturday, 17th of September, some of dancers from Upper Primary and Secondary school were so privileged to be invited to perform in Emporium Pluit Mall, joining other dancers from the IDance Studio Jakarta to entertain the mall goers. It was a successful performance. On 23rd September, we competed in the “Escalade” Dance Competition organized by SMAK 5 Penabur in Kelapa Gading. It was Indonesia’s second time in the U18 League, and one of our students, Selma Raquel Fairach was part of the participating team. Having played softball for a little over two years, Selma (11H) had gone to various games, both local and international. Most of the time, she would play with her club, Garuda, but the PONY tournament was the first time she had competed while bearing the Indonesian flag on her sleeve. It was nerve wrecking, she admitted, but also very exciting and inspiring. She got to play with seniors who have been playing since they were kids, and managed to learn a lot from them over the three months that they trained together. “One of the most valuable things about being able to participate in teachers at school are really nice, and they don’t really mind me staying back on days when I can stay a bit longer at school, just to discuss some problems that I couldn’t understand or a concept that I haven’t fully grasped yet.” the tournament (outside the games) is being given the chance to sing the national anthem in front of people who might not have heard of Indonesia before”, said Selma when asked about the most memorable part of her trip. Of course, getting into the team was no easy walk in the park. The 15-year old had to go through a two-week long audition, as well as additional monitoring during the practices to make sure that she could keep up with the training regimen. Despite having to fast over the Ramadan month, all the players had to train from 4pm to 6pm. Exhausting as it was, the whole team was committed to excellence and thus, they didn’t opt out of any of the programs. When asked about how it felt like juggling her responsibilities as a student and an athlete, she just grinned and stifled a laugh. “Well, it’s not always easy I guess. Sometimes I have to practice until 7pm and that means I’ll get home at around 8.30pm to 9pm. ACS Jakarta in particular, hands out quite a lot of homework, and I was actually also preparing for IGCSE during the time I was training for the World Series. Thankfully, the She also said that she was initially very surprised at how supportive ACS Jakarta is when it comes to pursuing activities outside of school that builds character and skills. “The school didn’t scold me for coming back late to school because of the tournament, in fact they were very supportive of the idea of representing the country in an international tournament.” Wearing the country’s flag on one’s sleeve is an honor, but so is being a student who is flexible and can adjust to the surroundings in any situation. Juggling different responsibilities can be hard, but if you put your mind to it, you’ll be able to pull anything off. “Don’t let your studies become a reason for you to be cooped up at home doing nothing”, Selma noted with a smile, asking other ACSians to pursue their passion. GLOBAL ISSUES NETWORK CONFERENCE 2016 From 16-19 September 2016, 10 Grade 11 and 12 students went to participate in the Global Issues Network (GIN) Conference 2016 in Palangka Raya, Kalimantan, a conference which aims to increase awareness of global issues, especially environmental issues, to youths. In this conference, they joined workshops to enhance their skills, such as a filming workshop and a sustainable agriculture workshop. They also participated in excursions to see orangutans and the Dayak people. Most importantly, they met many inspirational youths from many schools around Asia, who have started their own campaigns, and felt motivated to do the same. Overall, GIN Kalimantan was a meaningful experience for all the students who participated. We hope that the students can implement the lessons they have learned at the event in the school and the local community.
