GW February 2016 - Evergreen Golden Retriever Club
The Evergreen Golden Retriever Club The Golden West The Official Newsletter of the Evergreen Golden Retriever Club February 23, 2016 Volume 48, issue 2 Awards Banquet Was a fun evening! Thank you to Deb Pampiks for arranging it and to Kathy Fisk and Lynn Anderson for all the work with the awards. Mexican Fiesta See the Awards results on pages 5, 6, 7 and 8. page 2 EGRC Specialty 2016 from Sheila Iturriaga Colyer Things are moving along nicely for this year’s specialty. Below are the highlights since the last update Sammamish Communication: There is a lot of support from all the clubs regarding obedience. Sammamish is giving us 3 rings: obedience, rally and practice, at no charge. We will have reserved grooming with power. We are looking at opening this to other breeds as well. Sammamish is OK with not offering golden classes in 2017. Sammamish has not finalized their judges for 2017. I have passed along the judges that Sammamish has hired to the judges selection committee. Jan Leikan is the Sammamish show chair. She said if we provide her a name she is happy to hire for Sammamish if she can. Special Events: 1. We are planning a catered barbecue on Saturday after breed. Kathy Fisk has is chairing this event. More details will be available as things are finalized. 2. The Friday evening event has been cancelled. If anyone is interested in chairing something that night, please let me know. Obedience: 1. We will be eliminating Irish Water Spaniels, Belgian Tervurens and Portuguese Water Dogs from Obedience and Rally as the breeds have specialties at other locations. Trophies: 1. I am researching setting up the PayPal for trophy donations. Once we have this setup it will make submitting trophy donations a lot easier for everyone. 2. Stacia has the budget for trophies and is diligently working on getting some great items. Updates for the Specialty 2017: With Sammamish moving to back-to-back All breed shows starting in 2017, EGRC has a decision to make. Below are the options the club has as well as some pros/cons. #1 - We can continue to have back-to-back specialties and Sammamish will not offer classes for goldens on Saturday. Pro-there are 2 independent specialties which may draw additional entries. Con-The BOB dog does not go to the group. #2 - We do a designated specialty. Pro-The BOB dog does go to the group. Con-Expensive for the club as we are responsible for trophies and Sweepstakes judge expense but we get no revenue. #3 - We hold one independent on Friday and goldens participate in the Sammamish all-breed on Saturday. Pro-still 3 sets of points, less work for EGRC and EGRC can still offer an all-breed obedience and rally on Saturday with Sammamish’s blessing Con-only 1 specialty on that weekend. A survey will be coming out later in February via survey monkey requesting feedback on these options. You are encouraged to participate in this process so your voice will be heard. page 3 The Rescue Report I have in the past shared the story of our now senior girl, Mandy, and the challenges that she has faced due to her having Pigmentary Uveitis. She was diagnosed at the first PU Clinic that EGRC hosted when she was 4 years old. Despite our religiously administering the required daily eye drops, Mandy developed Glaucoma in her left eye approximately 2 years later. The scar tissue from the inflammation associated with the Uveitis eventually interferes with the drainage of the fluid from the eye resulting in an increase in the intraocular pressure. Pressure beyond a certain point will destroy the optic nerve and beyond that point cause significant pain in the form for a headache. In February of 2012 we noticed certain symptoms and took her immediately to the Animal Eye Clinic where we learned that she was already blind in the left eye and the pressure was climbing. Just days later she had the eye removed. The pressure in her eye the day of surgery was 42 mm Hg. Mandy, who was 8 years old then, adjusted quite well as dogs do, to having vision in only one eye. Unfortunately, in 2014 we learned that Glaucoma had developed in the right eye so we knew where we were headed. By September 2015 it was clear that she had little if any vision the right eye and at an eye appointment learned that now had a cataract on the eye. Surgery was recommended to remove the cataract and put in a new lens, treat the Ciliary Body so that it would produce less fluid and put a drain in her eye to help remove the fluid. If it was successful (70% chance) it would last for 2 years. It was also explained that fibrin could block the drain and if that occurred, we would have to get her into the clinic asap. Given the fact that it takes a minimum of 2 hours and frequently much longer for us to get to the clinic, that piece of information weighed heavily in our decision. We did have the surgery done as Mandy is otherwise a healthy and very active 12 year old dog. Mandy did very well the first 5 weeks but then developed an allergy to one of the eye drops that she’d been on for months. The drain in her eye started to get plugged. There were many late night phone calls to Dr. Sullivan and 3 early morning trips to his clinic. We are now past all of that and although we think the surgery was only mildly helpful, we are glad that we had it done. She still gets 4 different types of eye drops and oral medication twice a day but hopefully this will be reduced at some point. I am sharing her story because I believe many people do not understand how serious this condition can be. It may be that most dogs are managed well with the Diclofenac drops but some, like Mandy, are not. Additionally, it cannot be managed if it is not first diagnosed. That brings me to the upcoming PU screening clinic. I was disappointed last year when, unlike previous years, the clinic did not fill up. Rescue will let all of our adopters for the past 10 years know about the clinic and we will share the information with other rescue groups. Please strongly encourage your puppy buyers to have their dogs screened either at this clinic or another event or by scheduling an appointent. And remember that they need to be checked every year. We recently took in a 12 year old female from the Tacoma Shelter and she was found to have an early stage of PU. Nancy Kiesler Volunteer, EGRR The primary focus of Evergreen Golden Retriever Rescue (EGRR) is on rescuing Golden Retrievers in need. Driven by our belief in responsible pet ownership, we are dedicated to ensuring for dogs such as these a future of care and affection. page 4 Welcome to new Club members: Kathryn and Scott Denninghoff Sherie Phillips Kellie May GRCA CCA event: Certificate of Conformation Assessment Hosted by the Golden Retriever Club of BC March 19, 2016 Surrey, BC link to premium: http://egrc.org/Docs/GRCA-CCA-PREMIUM-LIST-March-2016.pdf Next General Membership Meeting: Date: Thursday March 24th, 2016 @ 7:30 pm Location: Sharon Colvin’s Training Building 19625 - 99th Ave SE Snohomish, WA 98296 Topic: Barn Hunt Training THE EVERGREEN GOLDEN RETRIEVER CLUB ANNUAL AWARDS BANQUET FEBRUARY 20, 2016 page 5 2015 Accomplishments Lynn Anderson: EARNED: AKC CD, PCD, RA, RE, International Veterans in Silver, International Veterans in Bronze, and AKC Bronze Grand Champion GCH Am/Can/Int. Greetings EGRC members, The judges selection committee is calling for a nomination of judges for our 2017 and specialty. Per the guidelines, you the members tell us who you would like for judges for the specialties for the upcoming year no later than March 10th, 2016. Once we have all nominations, we will send out the names collected to the members via Survey Monkey, and then select the top 4 names. Even if you are an associate member you can submit names and vote! The categories include, Regular Conformation classes including Best of Breed, Sweepstakes (both Puppy & Veteran), Obedience, and Rally. Each member may nominate up to three names per category. Please email your nominations to Kathy Fisk at [email protected] no later than March 10th and include “Call for Nominations” in your subject line. Your nominations will remain confidential. Families with multiple voting members, will be given directions on how to vote during the voting time. We have included a list of prior judges used by us, Inland Empire, Pacific Rim, Western Regional and the Golden Retriever National. As per the guidelines for the Judges selection: “The membership should seriously consider whether the judges who have recently held these assignments would draw a good entry before recommending them for our specialty. “ Thank you for your help. The board feels we need additional names in case these judges are busy for our specialty. 2) Sammamish Kennel Club is using Dana Cline and Bill Russell in their slate of judges for 2017. If EGRC used these two names, it could reduce the cost of our judges by sharing them with Sammamish Kennel Club. page 11 Evergreen Golden Retriever Club January Board Meeting Minutes Wednesday January 13, 2016@ 7:00 PM Deb Pampiks’ home 1. Discussed monthly presentation to the board of bank statements, check reciepts, and check register. b. Insurance change. Does not look like agent Shanneon Koehlerschmidt (for liability insurance) can get us better rates than we get for Sportsmen’s for Directors and Hanover of Fidelity Bond. So I think we need to rescind vote from last month and continue with current plan. Directors insurance is due at end of month and bond in March. Application for blanket fidelity policy suggests some bookkeeping practices and we need to complete questionnaire very soon. Should we hire accountant or get volunteer audit committee of “non check signers”. (WSOTC does this) c. Next meeting Thursday, February 11. 9.
