Annual Report 2 0 1 5
President’s Letter 2015
The Southampton Fresh Air Home would like to thank everyone whose generosity enabled us to have a successful 114th season. 2015
has been a productive year for the SFAH. Our two fundraisers, the Decorators-Designers-Dealers Sale and Auction Gala and the American
Picnic with Fireworks by Grucci, were once again well attended and financially successful. These two events, along with private grants
and donations, enable us to provide over 150 physically challenged children the opportunity to experience a sleep-away camp. At camp,
the children enjoy swimming, sailing, cooking classes, sports, dancing, beach trips, spa days, field trips, iPad and computer activities
and so much more. In the past few years, we have expanded our programs to include off season weekend getaways and day trips for
both campers and alumni.
Only an extraordinary community can support a family-oriented organization for over 100 years, and the campers and their families are
very grateful to all of you who support them.
In my first year as President, I enjoyed many visits to the camp meeting with the children and their families and hearing firsthand about
their hopes, needs, obstacles and dreams. Our staff designs activities to help build self-esteem, independence and confidence. While
all of these elements are critical to every child’s development, I also have learned that the Home offers something to these children that
others often take for granted: fun. This simple act of providing fun to these kids who spend so much time either isolated or visiting doctors
and therapists is a gift of immeasurable value.
2015 was a busy time at the SFAH with the completion of the new Catherine di Montezemolo Administrative Building. This important addition serves as a welcome center to campers and their families, makes the staff more accessible to the children and gives senior camp
staff a bird’s eye view of happenings on the campus. It was wonderful to see groups of children enjoying lunch with the administrative
staff on the inviting back patio facing the new gardens this summer. The building is a true testament to Cathy di Montezemolo’s life long
dedication to the children and reminds us all of her giving spirit.
2015 also saw the inaugural meeting of the Camper Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC includes current and former campers, camper
parents, management and members of the Board. The group was brought together to give campers and parents a stronger voice in
camp planning. The CAC both confirmed our many accomplishments and gave us ideas and guidance for the future. Topics discussed
at the meeting included camper and parent independence, our facility and program, staffing, alumni and fundraising. I was so impressed
by all those who participated in this year’s CAC and look forward convening a new group in 2016.
We are in the process of a major facilities upgrade that will include restoration of the sports courts including the provision of shade for the
children and a significant renovation of our Main Building including the kitchen and dining hall. We recently embarked on a capital campaign
to fund these projects and have received a number of generous donations. I extend a special thanks to all of you who have made leadership gifts and contributions to this effort.
With our upgraded wheelchair fleet fully in place, we are better able to safely transport campers to and from New York City and expand
our off-site field trips. This summer’s outings included trips to the Southampton Breakers baseball games, the Riverhead Raceway, concerts in Agawam Park, the Southampton Animal Shelter, the Parrish Art Museum, the Rogers Memorial Library, the Long Island Game
Farm, the Westkill Farm and the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, among others.

Our off-season programming continues to grow. During the 2015 season, we hosted
seven events including overnight reunions at the camp, our annual holiday party, day
trips to Broadway’s The Lion King, and Mets and Yankees games. We are currently
scheduling several exciting 2016 outings, and it is our plan to produce two off-season
events per month by 2017. Via our alumni programs, we continue to engage our
campers as young adults and also provide first time campers with mentors.
As I finish my first year as President, I want to acknowledge my predecessor, Michaela
Keszler, who spent three years at the helm. Michaela’s thoughtful leadership of the Board
and her dedication to the children and the Home serve as an inspiration to all of us. I
thank her for the energy and time she devoted to improving our facility and programs.
We are committed to providing our special children with experiences that enhance their
lives. We cannot do this without you and we are grateful for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Catherine Kuehn Price
Cathy Price with husband Malcolm left, and
son Malachi at the 2015 American Picnic.

Capital Campaign
Over our 114-year history, the four-acre campus at 36 Barkers Island Road has seen a tremendous evolution. Thanks to the addition
of climate controlled dormitories and an infirmary built in 2008, the Home now provides a minimum of five off-season weekend
retreats for current campers and alumni in addition to three summer sessions ranging from one to three weeks. Our off-season reunions address the lonely void in these children’s lives once summer camp ends. It is our plan to provide at least two off-season
events monthly by 2017.
A modernization of our campus is necessary to serve our physically challenged children and their ever more complex needs in the
best possible way. A five-year plan initiated in 2013 includes the new administrative building, a renovation of the main building, pools,
sports courts and an upgrade of the transportation fleet. To date, these projects have been sustained by individual bequests, the
Home’s endowment, and foundation and private grants. In 2015 the Board initiated a Capital Campaign to raise the additional funds
to complete these projects.
We thank our Capital Campaign chairmen Lise Evans and Tania Higgins and all of our generous Capital Campaign donors to date.

Gifts that Endure
Few families that send their child to the Southampton
Fresh Air Home can afford to bear the real cost of sending their child to camp. The Fresh Air Home accepts all
children on a needs blind basis. No child is denied an
opportunity to be a camper because of their inability to
pay. Financial aid is available for all levels of need, from
minimal need to 100% of camp fees.
The Southampton Fresh Air Home today.

Become a Member of The 1901 Society
Through a charitable bequest in your Will or Living Trust, you can ensure that the Southampton Fresh Air Home will keep its doors
open to all campers who can benefit from our programs to apply, regardless of financial circumstances. This thoughtful act, which
has little or no current financial impact on you, may result in the largest and most lasting one-time gift you ever make to the Home.
Instruct your attorney to add a charitable bequest for the Southampton Fresh Air Home to your estate plan for a specific amount, a
specific property, a percentage of your estate, or for a specific capital project or program.
For confidential information on making your planned gift commitment to the Southampton Fresh Air Home, please call Thomas Naro,

Pamela Rollins Camacho
Pamela Rollins Camacho recently recalled her
first experience with the Southampton Fresh Air
Home. She was invited by friends to help the
campers with their hair and make-up – lovingly
known as “Day of Beauty” – preparing them for
the annual prom. Meeting the children once
was all she needed to become drawn in by the
mission of the Home. Pamela then started attending the fundraising events and working on
event committees. She was invited to join the
Board of Directors in 2001.
Photo - Patrick McMullan/PatrickMcMullan.com
As a Board Member, Pamela has served as
Secretary, Executive Vice President, Co-President (with Susan Nappa Cocke) and Vice
Chairman. She chaired the Home’s American
Picnic three times and the Decorators-Designers-Dealers Sale and Auction twice. During her
tenure as President, the Home completed the
replacement of its aging dormitories and infirmary with new state of the art buildings without
the children missing a single day of camp.

campers enjoying a day at The Meadow Club.

at The American Picnic.
“Meeting the children
once was all she
needed to become
drawn in by the
mission of the Home.
”
Pamela fondly spoke about all of the people who helped take the Home into its second century: “Ann Grimm, Cathy di Montezemolo,
Jackie Goodwin, Pam Michaelcheck and Kathryn Cowles – I loved all the people I was involved with in the beginning. They were
very admirable in every way.” Pamela, who currently serves as co-chairman of the Board Development and Nominating Committee,
is also very proud of the current Board. “The Board has grown enormously since I joined in 2001. It has grown enormously as a
collegial, professional, hard-working and accomplished Board. The trajectory the Board has taken has made the Home, its vision
and its programs stronger. In addition, the Home is so fortunate to have a terrific Executive Director, Tom Naro, and wonderful Camp
Director, David Billingham. Without them, the Camp would not be the strong and vibrant place we know.”
Both Pamela’s personal and professional life have played important roles at the Home over the past years. Pamela and her family –
husband Alex and four children, Julian, Isabel, Charlotte and Simon – can often be found at the camp, or at the Meadow Club,
teaching and playing tennis with the campers. Her expertise as an attorney has been an invaluable asset to the Board and the
Home. “My biggest pleasures are to be involved with the campers and the staff and everyone working at the Home. Together with
the Board, they have helped the Home strengthen and expand. I have enjoyed watching how the new bunks gave the campers
and counselors a wonderful, more comfortable place to live. It became bright and cheerful and it’s worked so well. The infirmary is
a much better place for the nurses to care for the kids, and it serves their needs to a much better degree.”
Pamela was asked why the Home has been one of the most enduring charities in Southampton, and her answer was simple: “The
children. As soon as you see them it takes you in and keeps you. It is the ability to do hands-on work with the campers. And it is
the family involvement that working with the Home allows – family involvement which you don’t get with other charities. All of my children have volunteered at the Home over the years. It is such an important part of their experience growing up in Southampton."
All of us at the Home thank Pamela for all she has given the Home, and we look forward to welcoming the entire Camacho family on
our newly renovated Sports Courts in 2016!

Camper Highlights
Tyrese Alleyne-Davis
His speech from the 2015 Open House
Good afternoon everyone, my name is Tyrese Alleyne-Davis. I’m 16 years old and I have
been coming to the Southampton Fresh Air Home for seven incredible summers.
Every day I wonder what the ladies of SFAH were envisioning when they saw and realized
that there was no place in general for people of our nature to come and have a normal
summer with no worries, judgment or belittlement by society.
When I first heard about the Southampton Fresh Air Home in the fall of 2008, my parents
were a bit apprehensive to send their baby away for such a length of time and to a place
which didn’t matter much to them. With a convincing argument they allowed me to spread
my wings and broaden my horizons. Now looking back it was the best thing they ever did
and are now counting down the days till camp starts.
You wouldn’t believe seven years ago I was an overconfident, self-centered individual with
no desire in strengthening or developing myself and others around me. But with many intelligent, inspiring conversations with staff and SFAH’s very own David Billingham, I came
to realize the power each camper has with keeping not only their bunk but the whole camp
spirit alive.
If I ever lose my way later on in life and when I think there is no hope left, will always come
back home here and be quickly reminded of everything that was instilled in me.
When you leave here today after meeting all of us and giving you a glimpse into our world, please
give two minutes to think how your life could have been if the shoe was on the other foot.
Thank you all for spending this beautiful day at the Southampton Fresh Air Home and we
would love to see you all next year.
From “Differently Abled” a blog by Tucker Salovaara September 2015
This past weekend I went to my favorite
place on earth, SFAH. I spent my childhood
there with my friends from school from
2001-2011. These were my favorite times
getting ready for every summer to go there
and have my summer to remember.
This past weekend when I got to camp, it felt
like I was back at my first year where I was 8
years old and having the time of my life. It felt
like I did not have a disability, but an ability.
No matter what, SFAH will be my home away
from home for life because when you first
step on the grounds you feel like a butterfly
who grabs you and takes you to a fantasy
land that no one can judge you for what you
are.
When I aged out of SFAH, I was heartbroTucker, center, with his mini session buddies
ken. When the camp invited me to the first
mini session after graduation, it was the greatest time of my life because it made me realize that SFAH will never
leave me. Even though I aged out, I am a part of the greatest camp If you are physically challenged and you are not 18 yet, I recommend
ever for people who are physically challenged.
you to check out SFAH because this camp will change you forever.
