Hot on the heels of the visit to Keppel Club by the President
of Hollandse Club, Mdm Anneloes van Haaren, and her Main
Committee Members on 15th February 2016, Keppel Club President,
Lai Mun Onn, led Keppel Club MC Members to visit Hollandse
Club on the bright Friday morning of 11th March 2016.

and Hollandse officials warmly
received Keppel officials and took them
on a delightful tour of their facilities
accompanied by an enlightening talk
on the history and profile of their Club.
Hollandse was founded in
1908 by Mr JC Koopman, initially
to accommodate the then growing
Dutch community in Singapore,
which gradually extended to other
nationalities, including Singaporeans.
Currently, their principal
membership stands at about 700,
excluding family members. The
fabric of Hollandse interweaves well
with Keppel’s in that both are family
orientated club committed to provide
opportunities and facilities for family
bonding and also in promoting
interaction among families through
social and recreational activities.
As a quick snap-shot, Hollandse
sits on 15,564 sq m of prime freehold

Over and above these facilities,
Hollandse has other activities

After the tour, the signing
ceremony commenced with President
Anneloes van Haaren extending a
warm welcome to the Keppel Team
and expressed that Hollandse is very
happy to have found Keppel as a
potential partner as both clubs have
similar historical heritage and sporting
culture. She will be bringing up
this courtship with Keppel at their
upcoming AGM on 22nd March 2016
to get directions from their members.
President Lai responded that
Keppel is honoured and delighted to
have the interest of Hollandse as there
is certainly great prospects to explore
a merger between the 2 clubs, which
have such similar DNA.
A merger of clubs is not new in
Singapore. It had been successfully
accomplished when the Royal
Singapore Golf Club and the Island
Club merged to form the Singapore
Island Country Club to become

one of the most prestigious clubs in
Singapore.
Both Presidents then proceeded
to sign the Reciprocal Agreement
which will accord members of each
club similar social privileges in the
other, except for golf facilities in
Keppel which Hollandse members can
enjoy on weekdays at member sign-in
rate.
The signing of this Reciprocal
Agreement is a first baby step to forge
a strong relationship between both
clubs. There are needs and resources
of both clubs which can complement
each other to achieve great and
awesome synergy.
Hopefully, love will blossom and
give birth to a new prestigious town
club, the only one probably to have
golfing real estate in neighbouring
countries and possibility some golfing
arrangements with local courses,
public or otherwise.
Come on, Keppelites, do
give Hollandse a visit to have your
feel of their potentiality. Similarly, if
you meet Hollandse members visiting
us, please extend your kind hospitality
to them.

A new Comms team on board
We welcome a completely new team in our Corporate Communications Department. It is headed by
Ms Ashikin Hashim, the Assistant Manager, who is concurrently Editor of Keppel Links. With her are
Mr Dean Koh Kim Tat, the Communications Executive and Assistant Editor, and Mr Nicodemus Aw
Wei Jet, the Graphic Designer.
Ash, as she is popularly known, is a journalist, TV presenter and PR consultant. She has an extensive
background in sports and lifestyle journalism, digital media and content creation. As a freelance TV
presenter for Eleven Sports Network Ch 111, she has covered the Singapore national team’s World Cup
qualifying matches at the Sports Hub. She oversaw content production and filming for various segments
of the Asian Youth Games 2009.

She has also written regular football and sports features for a local afternoon newspaper, including
exclusive interviews and columns about Spanish and English football, and contributed to the paper’s 2010
World Cup coverage. She is also a columnist at Yahoo! S.E.A.
Dean is a journalist with web and print experience. He was Editor of a bi-monthly cycling-specific
magazine.

Among the major events he has covered in the last two years were the Taipei International Cycle
Show 2014 and 2015, OCBC Cycle Singapore 2014 and 2015, and the 28th South-east Asian (SEA)
Games 2015.
Nic has been a graphic designer for almost 20 years. He was the Art Director of an event company.
Among his major projects handled was the Teochew Festival 2014 where his involvement ranged from
wall graphics to the drama stage design, backdrop design, posters and media handling.
Prior to that, he was the Art Director of a lifestyle newspaper. He was responsible for its layout and
story features. He also took charge of styling and photo shoot sessions.

Christmas on the Danube
oozes more charm than the huge
ocean liners as she creates a
cosy environment because of
her size. New friends are easily
made, interactions are close, crew
members are warm. To these, add
exquisite cuisine and fine regional
wines, and the setting is perfect.

If you have had enough of ocean cruises, try taking a river cruise.
While both are absolutely gorgeous, each has its own charms.
Last December, we were taking
a Christmas Markets cruise on the
beautiful AmaBella navigating the
River Danube from the Hungarian
capital of Budapest to Nuremberg
in Germany. What could be more
alluring than experiencing a musicfilled, lazy Sunday afternoon as
the AmaBella riverboat pulled
away reluctantly from enchanting
Budapest towards the arms of
another beauty, Vienna?
As we cruised away on
that Sunday, Dec 13, 2015,
the AmaBella passed by banks
showcasing quaint houses with
brightly-coloured roofs and rows
of coniferous trees in their wintry
splendour. We were also greeted
by enchanting fairy-tale castles and
churches floating on clouds.
What made it even more
captivating was that our festivelydecorated floating hotel was
cruising through Vienna, Melk,
Passau, Salzburg, Regensburg and
Nuremberg, enabling us to visit
some of Europe’s most enchanting
Christmas Markets that time of the
year. Along the way we journeyed
past Linz, the lush Wachau wine
region, a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, and through the Main-Danube
Canal across the Continental

Divide. The scenes were nothing
short of the spectacular.
We were further enthralled
when we disembarked to explore on
foot some of Continental Europe’s
oldest cobbled-street cities and
towns, each with its own unique
atmosphere and characteristics, but
all of which took our breath away!
In the process, we celebrated the
beauty and history of the legendary
River Danube, one of the world’s
most romantic rivers immortalised
by Johann Strauss’ famous “The
Blue Danube Waltz”.
The waters are certainly not
blue, but the Danube’s beauty is
captured by more than 1,790 miles
(2,840 km) of its meandering lanes
mirroring elegant river-bank houses,
castles, churches and trees through
10 countries in Central Europe
before it empties into the Black Sea.
It runs its course from the Black
Forest in Germany.
River cruises, on petite boats
which typically carry no more
than 200 passengers, provide a
unique opportunity for travellers to
experience up-close-and-personal
the rich history and culture of
the lands which traverse the river
lanes. And somehow the riverboat
Since time immemorial,
rivers have been the lifeline of the
community, joining people socially,
culturally and economically. As
many of Europe’s cities were built
close to rivers, we anchored right
in the city centres, literary a stone’s
throw away. I can’t think of a
better way of getting close to a
city to take in all its beauty and
grandeur.
The good thing about the
AmaBella cruise is that it includes

guided walking tours or sight-seeing
on luxurious coaches in every town
and city. It even provides bicycles

so guests who wish to experience

Lion and dragon dances herald
Keppel’s CNY celebrations
This year’s Chinese New Year celebrations were held at Keppel Hall on
February 20, 2016.
More than 120 members
attended the thrilling festivities to commemorate the Year of the
Monkey - and the celebrations
featured various entertaining
performances from the engaging
acts.
Members were regaled by the
18 Highpoles Acrobat Performance
from the Yi Wei Athletic Association,
and many were also seen eagerly
taking out their mobile phones to
capture the amazing stunts by the
dance group.
They were also engaged in
friendly banter by the Monkey
God acrobat, who cheekily went
up to almost every member of the
audience to tease them.
Children and parents alike
giggled at the acrobat’s antics, as he
leapt across the hallway to look for
his next ‘target’.
It was part of a vibrant and
engaging performance by the Five
Monkey God Acrobats Troupe
Performance from Into E projects.
The adorable Twin Head
mascots, introduced at the beginning
of the show, were also a favourite
with the children, who scrambled to
take photos with them.
The mesmerizing Dragon
Dance display also captured the
imagination of the audiences.

Traditionally, this dance is
performed by a team of dancers who
manipulate a long flexible figure of a
dragon using poles positioned at
regular intervals along the length of
the dragon.
committees and the President, were
later invited to perform the
traditional prosperity toss or “lou hei”
on the 18 tables laid out for them,
and they certainly did so in the best
of spirits.
The dance team mimics the
supposed movements of this river spirit
in a sinuous, undulating manner, as
seen within our own hall.
Young and old, strangers and
friends, came together to yell “huat
ah!” in the name of abundance,
success and wealth.
The energetic Lion Dance
performance capped off an inspiring
evening, signifying good luck and
prosperity at Keppel Club for all
members and friends this year.
Chopsticks in hand, folks
bantered with one another, wishing
each other well and savouring the
traditional raw fish dish or “yu sheng”
that is a staple at all Chinese New Year
celebrations.
The emcee of the evening, Shirley,
also belted out a few hits of her own,
capturing the hall with the sweet
sounds of her voice and also invited
members to sing along to traditional
Chinese New Year songs with her at the
centre of the stage.

A family recipe
Seafood aglio olio
with laksa leaves
By Alvin Ng, F&B Manager
Ingredients
Method
1 kg chicken drumsticks or chicken
wings
6 cloves of garlic (mashed)
6 tablespoons of dark soya sauce
A dash of Grounded Pepper
(more if preferred)
½ teaspoon of salt
3 tablespoons of oil for frying
¾ cup of water
1 teaspoon of sugar
1. Bring water to boil, cook
spaghetti for about 7-9minutes.
Drain dry the pasta and sprinkle with olive oil evenly, leave to cool and set aside.
2. Peel the tiger prawns with the tail on, score the back of the prawn by using a
small knife and remove the vein, wash and pat dry.
3. Heat the sauté pan with medium heat, pour in the olive oil and slowly sweat the
chopped garlic till fragrant (golden brown).
4. Sauté the chilli padi and prawn for 2 -3 minutes. Add in the cooked pasta and
toss well.
5. Deglaze with chicken/vegetable stock and season with salt & pepper.
6. Infuse with the chopped laksa leaves and toss thoroughly for a minute.
7. Plate the pasta and drizzle with extra virgin olive oil. Ready to serve – bon apetit!
Jacuzzi fever!
Finally, after renovations that kicked off on
January 11, the new Keppel jacuzzi tubs are
ready to be used.
The old jacuzzi has been replaced with two new
portable pools featuring state of the art features for the
enjoyment of all members. Here are a few rules we would
like members to observe for the benefit of all users.
OPERATING HOURS:
DAILY BETWEEN 8.00AM – 9.00PM
RULES
• Please sign in/out before and after using the Jacuzzi.
• Please shower and wear appropriate attire (swimwear)
before entering the Jacuzzi.
• No footwear is allowed in the Jacuzzi.
• Anyone who may be adversely affected by the heat or
humidity of the Jacuzzi, such as children under 5 years
of age, pregnant women and anyone with high-blood
pressure should not use the Jacuzzi.
• Please do not use the Jacuzzi if you are suffering from a
skin infection.
• No smoking in/or around the Jacuzzi area. Spitting,
urinating, and blowing one’s nose in the swimming pool
or Jacuzzi are strictly prohibited.
• No animals are allowed in or around the swimming
pool, Jacuzzi, or any portions of the adjacent deck area.
• Intoxicated persons are not permitted to use the Jacuzzi.
• No eating and drinking in the Jacuzzi.

RULES FOR CHILDREN
• Children under 1.2m in height are not permitted to use
the Jacuzzi.
• Children under 12 years old must be accompanied by
an adult.
• No jumping and/or diving or horse play.
IMPORTANT NOTE
• The capacity of the tubs are 5 and 4 adults per Jacuzzi.
• Please report any faults to the swimming pool counter.
• The Club is not responsible for lost articles, accidents or
injury to members or guests using the facilities.
• Members and guests must abide by all the Rules and
Regulations.
• All persons using any of the pool and jacuzzi
are required to exercise due care to preserve the
functionality and appearance of said facilities. All trash
and personal belongings must be removed after use of
the jacuzzi and adjacent areas.

Keppel course a hit with ex-touring pros
This event was made possible
by the generosity and support of
Keppel Club, Golfing Manager Mr
Edmund Chun, all participants,
volunteers and the three pro coaches
who made their way from Thailand
despite their busy schedule.
On March 8 2016, the fairways of Keppel Club was graced by
three former touring golf professionals from Thailand - Stephanie
Oukeo, Peera Hachaiyaphum and Sippapas Rattanawimol.
Stephanie, a former LPGA
professional as well as Peera
and Sippapas, former Asian Tour
Professionals, were in town for
the Heart Swing Charity Pro Am,
organised by Family Life First (FLF).
FLF’s mission is to provide care
support services, welfare assistance
and to empower the underprivileged
community in meeting their own
social needs by becoming selfefficient.
Our nine generous donors who
pledged to FLF played a round of
golf with our three coaches, who
presently coach various Thai golf
pros currently in the LPGA and other
tours. After a game on the beautiful
course, the donors adjourned to
the driving range where they were
given expert tips on raising their
game. Later, 10 beneficiaries of FLF,
ranging from seven to 12 years old,
were invited to participate in a clinic
conducted by our coaches.
Despite it being their first
experience at golf, the children
showed great interest and it did
not take long for them to pick up a
proper swing. Stephanie also shared
with the children about how she
fulfilled her dream of playing on the

Committee vs Staff golf game
Keppelite and former Greens Committee member, Steven Tee
proposed the Committee vs Staff Golf game in 2012, three years
after he joined the club.
Now in its fourth year
running, the game continues to be a
popular event, thanks to Tee’s own
appreciation of the staff at the club.
After observing their
unwavering efforts and blood, sweat
and tears at keeping the course
perfect for members, guests and
visitors, Tee was motivated to kick
start the event, as a form of showing
his gratitude to them.

his own humble contribution to
Keppel Club.
And on January 4, Tee
successfully organized the golf game
for the fourth year running.
“Many members do not
know that during major tournaments,
many of our staff start preparing
the course and working from as
early as 2am,” Tee said.
“My objective of holding the
annual Committee vs Staff golf

time. That’s why staff needs more
time to prepare.”
“Unfortunately, there are not
many platforms around for the staff
to truly enjoy. When something goes
wrong, we point fingers at our staff
instead of appreciating their efforts.
Many marshals who are simply
doing their job get blamed, but I
want to try to make the members
understand that (making mistakes) is
the nature of golf.”
“So I proposed this idea as a
game between the staff and the MC,
green committee (GC) and subcommittees – and even for members
who support the staff,” he said.
One of Tee’s passions is also
uniting the club, in a spirit of
uniformity and coming together, as a
form of respect for the game of golf.
Orange and blue t-shirts were
introduced to all members for
reciprocal games, as a way to show
this.
“When I proposed it to the
committee, the idea was warmly
received by the President, captain
and GC members. I was very
pleased,” said Tee.

Lucky 68 at this year’s Fa Cai Cup
competitive banter among the 26
ladies and 46 men who participated.
The participants all brought
their “A” game to the course, despite
the element of fun introduced by the
organisers.
Laughs and jokes were gamely
exchanged between the participants,
with many encouraging shouts of
encouragement to each other.
In this year’s Fa Cai Cup, five
novelty holes were added to add an
extra edge to the game.
Participants were given the
chance to experiment with the new
concept, and to have fun at the same
time.
Feb 20 was a sunny morning - a perfect day for the annuallycontested Fa Cai Challenge Trophy.
The event, held in conjunction

several goody bags were handed out
to the participants.
As part of the Chinese tradition,
a Lion Dance performance kickstarted the evening’s proceedings,
much to the enjoyment of the
crowd.
Ms Cathy Tang (42 Stableford
points) took home the Fa Cai
Challenge Trophy and also qualified
for the Gold Medal game at the end
of the year.
Organisers also wheeled out a
birthday cake to commemorate her
birthday, and she was overwhelmed
by the support and love shown to
her by the organisers and her friends.
To cap off the event, an
element of surprise was added to
mark the birthday of Lady Captain
Meenah Fong.
It was certainly a memorable
New Year for her, as well as a
lovely Chinese New Year for all our
Chinese friends and members.
All guests who were present,
and seated on their tables, then
tossed the traditional “Yu-sheng”
among themselves as a mark of
prosperity.
As the dinner went on, a lucky
draw was held with prizes up for
grabs. Guests were excited to find
out if they were the recipients of the
prizes.

Keppel boy Andre Chong in 10th
Faldo Series Asia Grand Final 2016
Sir Nick Faldo created the Faldo Series in 1996 to give
opportunity to young enthusiastic golfers from aged 12 to 21 to
compete in a high and international competition level. This is to
help identify and nurture the next generation of champions.
His passion and initiative
is supported by various golf’s
governing bodies and his efforts
have led to 40 annual tournaments
now taking place in 30 countries
worldwide, spanning Europe, the
Middle East, North and South
America, and Asia.
In its 10th year of running,
Faldo Series Asia Grand Final
competition is organised for boys
and girls aged 12 to 21.
All the Champions from
various Asian countries (Taipei,
Thailand, Cambodia, China, Hong
Kong, Vietnam, Pakistan, Nepal,
Malaysia, India, Bangladesh,
Philippines, Japan, Australia,
Indonesia, New Zealand &
Singapore) came together to
compete for the 10th Faldo Series
Asia Grand Final.
The event was held from 2nd
to 4th March 2016 held in China,
Shenzhen Mission Hills Mid Valley
(Faldo Course).

Chong, who has won the Faldo
Series Singapore Championship
Boys Division in RCC during 9th
-11th September 2015 secured the
opportunity to qualify for the 10th
Faldo Series Asia Grand FINAL.
Andre, who just turned
15 before the competition,
represented Singapore to
participate in this 10th Faldo
Series Asia Grand Final.
Andre went with the SGA
team and two other fellow golfers
and the trio had a fruitful and
memorable experience at the
tournament.
They not only made new
friends from various countries,
but the SGA team members also
enjoyed closed interaction with Sir
Nick Faldo at his golf clinic.
In this competition, Andre
submitted his score cards of
79, 76 and 77 for the 3-day
competition. He was in the 37th
overall position out of the strong
73 player field.

1. Congratulations Andre on representing Singapore
for the 10th Faldo Series Asia Grand FINAL. What
does it mean to you to represent Singapore in this
International competition?
I am excited and honoured to represent Singapore
in this prestigious competition organised by Sir Nick
Faldo. This is my second International competition
representing Singapore and my first one was at
the age of 12. It is a memorable one as I have
the opportunity to play at such a high level of
competition. I also look forward to participating in
more international competitions.
2. What were your initial thoughts when you won the
Faldo Series Singapore Boys Division and secured
the qualification to this 10th Faldo Series Asia Grand
FINAL?
I was thrilled and could not believe the win as there
were many strong players in the competition. I was
happy to be able to represent Singapore for the grand
final in China Shenzhen Mission Hills where I have
never played.
3. What were your preparations for this 10th Faldo
Series Asia Grand FINAL?
Knowing the cold and windy climate in China
Shenzhen, I flew to practice on the actual ground
last November to get the feel of the weather and the
course layout. I studied the actual course layout and
yardage where the competition is playing off the long
golden tee box. I took details and made notes on
the course hazards and green breaks. I practiced the
strategies that I planned before the trip. I verified the
actual ground and refined the method of play. That
gave me a better feel of the golf course and game
plan for the competition.
4. What was your most memorable shot during the
competition?
At Par 5, Hole 4, 454 yards off the gold tee box, my
tee shot landed perfectly on the centre fairway, then
left me 200 yards to the green. I attacked the green
with my hybrid and landed on the back apron of the
green. I read the break and had a long putt towards
the hole. The ball rolled on my anticipated break line
downhill and sank into the hole from the 30 foot putt
to score an EAGLE for that hole. That was my most
memorable putt in the competition.

A word with Andre Chong
5. Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I played golf at the age of 4 with my dad. I enjoyed
the companionship and the game. I started the kiddy
competition at 4 and won prizes in those local
competitions. At the age of 7, I won my first overseas
competition in Thailand, Phuket, where I brought
back the Champions trophy from the under-8 Boys
division. I like the game of golf as the game gives
me many different challenges. From the planned
strategy of play, adjusting to situational conditions,
to character building, I gained a lot through playing
golf.
6. Do you have any golfing tips to share with your
fellow golfers?
Golf is not just a skill game but also a mental game.
It’s not how good you play on the game, it’s greatly
how well you recover from a bad shot. Know your
own game style and play the game that you’re
comfortable with. Don’t be affected by your flight
mate who drives longer than you or putts better than
you. Golf is not one dimensional, be CREATIVE with
your shots!
Advisory on cigarette butts at Keppel course
Cigarette butts are harmful to the environment and significant costs
can be incurred in the cleaning up process. In addition, it may also
potentially cause discomfort to others who may accidentally inhale the
fine particles produced, especially during windy days.
✓ Do’s
1. If you are on the golf course and need to take a puff, do make use of
the designated ashtrays on the front of the golf buggy to dispose of your
cigarette butts.
2. Only smoke at designated areas with a yellow box and dispose of your
cigarette butts properly.
✗ Don’ts
1. Do not dispose of cigarette butts in dustbins as it may be a potential fire
hazard.
2. Do not simply leave behind your cigarette butts after smoking. Be
considerate and find the proper places to dispose of the cigarette butts.

A first in Keppel’s History
It was the first time in Keppel Club’s 112-year history that a golf
event has been held.
And as expected, the event on
March 6 lived up to its hype, as it
pitted the men and ladies against
each other.
With the backdrop of Keppel
Club’s beautiful golf course, the
spirit of camaraderie and friendship
among members filled the air.
Players bantered with one
another, as long-time friends came
together to celebrate good times to
enjoy the spirit of Sunday.
The game was played in the
4BBB stableford points format, and
the players had a roaring good time.
The Ladies committee came
up with an innovative design poster
with an interesting title - “Buayas
vs Buayees” - to attract more
participants, and this also injected a
sense of humour to the occasion.

And despite the short lead time
for publicity, their efforts successfully
attracted a total of 48 players to the
competition.
Response from the Ladies
side was stronger, as the fairer
sex was clearly up for some feisty
competition, but the organisers need
to keep the number on both sides

In 2000, I made a decision to embark on a totally new career
and since then, there has been no looking back. At that point
in my life, I decided that I did not want to push papers in the
office anymore. I wanted to “find myself” and to get a job that
was different from the norm.
I took a major pay cut, had
long discussions with my mentor
and my then-boyfriend (now
husband) and decided to give swim
teaching a try.
From then till now, there
has never been a moment that I
regretted my decision. Initially, my
parents were not supportive but
eventually, they gave in when they
saw that I was enjoying what I did,
and I was happy going to work
every single day earning a decent
income.
I started building my career
with WaterJoy Swim School,
under the mentorship of my boss,
Ang Peng Wee. I was a complete
newbie, with zero knowledge of
swim teaching and he took me
on and taught me everything from
swimming techniques to class
management to establishing good
relationship with the students’
parents.
Over the years, my job as
a swim teacher developed into a
career, which slowly became my
life. Going to work is something I
enjoy immensely. Each and every
day, I look forward to seeing the
happy faces of my students coming
for class and trying their best with
me to learn, achieve and celebrate
their small successes in the pool.
It is also incredibly satisfying to
see their beaming smiles when
they achieve a breakthrough. The
satisfaction of helping them conquer
their fears and watching them as
they grow from being fearful of the

water to being confident swimmers
keeps me going and pushes me
to better myself so that I can be a
better teacher to them.
In mid-2002, I embarked
on a Diploma in Early Childhood
Studies awarded by Singapore
Institute of Management (SIM) as
I felt inadequate when teaching
toddlers and preschoolers. The
course equipped me with knowledge
of early childhood development,
teaching pedagogy, working with
children with special needs,
classroom management and
understanding of child behaviours.
With this knowledge, I was
better equipped when planning my
classes and developing swimming
lessons and programs. Besides
teaching on a daily basis, I also
took on the role of mentoring and
