OUR SUPERINTENDENT
MR. BEN
Mr.Ben started his career in education in 1971! He has seen
some huge changes in schooling throughout his career; such as
changes in the way tests are taken and the way tests relate to real
life situations.
The largest percent of Mr.Ben’s day consists of a ton of
meetings with administration and supervisors, reading and replying
to emails, taking phone calls, and keeping up with regulation and
law.
Mr.Ben’s favorite thing about his job is without a doubt is the
children. They are his motivation! He loves having his office over at
the Elementary where he gets to hear and see all of the activity.
One thing he wishes he could change in schools today is the
safety of all students in schools everywhere.
The one thing he wishes he could change about his job is the
restriction that the law/state has put on schools. He feels that with
such a hold back many students’ needs are left unprovided.
Some of the things Mr.Ben takes into consideration when
delaying or closing school are the road conditions, the day’s
forecast, and if the temperature is lower than -15 degrees (with wind
chill factor)
Mr.Ben loves working with London City Schools because he
believes we have an amazing community and a great student body.
Three things he enjoys during his free-time are sports (football and
basketball in particular), fishing, and spending time with his
grandchildren and children.

Outdoor Education
The Nuhop Center is Ohio’s Foremost Outdoor Education
Center. Nuhop’s Outdoor School Program integrates grade
level specific Ohio Department of Education academic
content standards into our curriculum. After conducting an
in-depth needs assessment with our clients, Nuhop
collaborates with teachers and administrators to design a
unique program that reflects the needs and abilities of your
students and each school’s specific culture and curricular
needs. Our unique program provides an exceptional
balance between experiential, outdoor and environmental
education philosophies. We focus on academic and
interpersonal skills in an outdoor classroom where students
learn from the natural world. We believe that children
should experience a safe, healthy outdoor education
setting in which to develop a sense of community.

PERFORMS AT OSU
Do you enjoy listening to classical music? If so, do you know
about James Swearingen? No? Let me tell you about him.
Professor James Swearingen is perhaps one of the most famous
composers in the world. On Saturday, February 15, he composed
and conducted at THE Ohio State University for the 3rd annual
Middle School Honor Band Festival. Students from London who
went to the festival were Simon Ruesch, Collin Thompson, and
Sadie Large. Julie Adkins was also nominated, but was unable to
go, due to her outside music group, the All-Star Brass Band.
James Swearingen composed for all four bands that were made up
of students from 147 middle schools all over Ohio. Some of his
pieces include Olde English Hymn, In Quest of Uluru, As the Eagle
Simon Ruesch and Colin Thompson
Flies, and Of Time and Change, which was
performed for the first time ever by the
Eighth Grade Scarlet Band. It was also
performed by the Eighth Grade Grey Band.
At London Middle School, there is a student
teacher from Capital University specializing
in music. His name is Mr. Gibson. His
mentor, or teacher, is James Swearingen
himself. Maybe one day you’ll be able to be
coached by one of the greatest in your
specialty.

“The new grading scale is not supposed to be easier,” said Mrs.
Henry, “The Board wants the scale to be fair.” This new grading
scale will be helpful to our students because all of the other
schools in Madison County use this proposed scale. The hope is that
this change will level the playing field and aid our students when
it comes to college admissions. It is not yet decided if this is the
exact scale that will be used (+ and - are being considered), but
it will be similar. The scale has not yet been Board approved, but
if it is, it will be implemented next school year.

Our district staff understands that our decision to open or close schools, offer a two-hour delayed start,
or resort to an early release in bad weather has a big effect on families. Also, we understand that our
students are better served by being in school – both academically and socially. As always, our top
priority is the safety of our students.
HOW DO WE MAKE OUR DECISION?
When bad weather affects the area, we make the decision to open/close schools or modify the school
day schedule based upon a careful analysis of all relevant factors, such as:
1
Information on road conditions from transportation staff and from local law enforcement and
road crews; We must give careful consideration to the most dangerous roads in the
district; they can be treacherous, even if your street looks clear.
2
Amount of accumulated snow and ice;
3
Whether precipitation is expected to continue throughout the day;
4
Temperature and wind chill (wind chills at or below -15°F during key walking and waiting-forbus times are given special consideration);
5
Impact on our transportation fleet (school bus diesel fuel begins to gel at an ambient
temperature of zero degrees);
6
Weather predictions (including those from a weather alert service);
7
Storm timing;
8
Building conditions (such as whether there is electricity and heat);
9
Parking lot conditions;
10
What other districts are doing.
WHO MAKES THE DECISION?
As Superintendent of Schools, I am responsible for the final decision, based upon the factors and
recommendations from the Transportation Director. Weather and road conditions may be fine in one
portion of our district, but not in another. In such instances we must close school or modify the school
day for the entire district.
WHEN IS THE DECISION MADE?
I strive to make the decision to close by 5:30 a.m., or earlier,
so that we can notify radio and TV stations, post the
information to our web site and social media. Keep in mind
that unusual weather conditions may force us to make the
decision after this time.
WILL WE CLOSE SCHOOL IF CONDITIONS WORSEN?
Even if weather conditions worsen, we cannot reverse our
decision in the morning without endangering students.
Once we make the decision to open the schools, many
parents rely on it and leave for work. If we then send
students back home, many will return to unsupervised bus
stops and empty houses. If conditions worsen during the
school day, we may need to have an early dismissal or
cancel pm Preschool classes, but we will give as much
notice as possible through the previously mentioned means.
Although my staff and I do our absolute best in this process,
we know that often no perfect decision exists. If you do not
feel that it is safe for your child to get to school, use your
best judgment as to whether or not he or she should attend.
Also, please discourage teenagers from driving in bad
conditions and offer them alternatives as weather conditions
worsen.
We hope that this explanation helps everyone understand
the process that our district staff uses to make the best
possible decision for all in our district.
Sincerely,
Thomas Ben
Superintendent

WINTER SPORTS ROUNDUP
IN PICTURES
The 2014 winter sports season was very eventful. The 8th grade girls basketball team finished 16-‐1 and brought home a league title. On the other hand, the 7th grade girls basketball team finished 12-‐4 and placed 3rd in the tournament. They upset the number one team in the league in overtime before the tournaments began. 7th grade boys basketball finished 7-‐9 and the 8th grade boys finished 4-‐11. The wrestlers had 3 people place first in their weight class: Josh Colvin, Bricker Thiel, and Noah Seldon. They also had 2 people place third: David Finley and Hunter Thiel. Thanks to all participating athletes for making this such a great season!

WOULD YOU HAVE THE GUTS TO GET
UP AND SPEAK AT A BOARD MEETING?
Have you ever been to a school board meeting? Well five of our 6th
graders have. Alena Peck, Richie Geib, Ethan Hensel, Ashley Rickens,
and myself, Gabby Dotson, all had the courage to perform a “Number
Talk” in front of the Board of Education. If you have never done a number
talk, I’m sure you’re pretty confused on what a number talk is. Well, a
“Number Talk” is where you have a math problem like 124 plus 37 and
can use nothing but your head to solve it. An example of one of the ways
we do this is by first subtracting 4 from 124 and then 7 from 37. That
gives us 120 and 30. Then you would add 120 and 30 to get 150 and then
add your remaining 7 and your 4 which is 11. Add the 150 and 11 together
to get your answer which is 161. I can very well speak for all of us and
tell you that it was certainly an adventure. We couldn’t have done it
without lots of practice, and of course our amazing math teacher, Mrs.
Brossman. 124+37= ?
124-4=120
37-7=30
120+30=150
7+4=11
150+11=161
