36 Gold Keys for artists and writers
The Scholastic Awards annually
represents some of the best student artists and authors in the area.
This year, Homestead art
students showcased their unique
abilities to the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, earning a total of 19
Gold Keys, 13 Silver Keys and six
Honorable Mentions. This is especially astounding compared to the
4,486 entries submitted this year,
the most ever, according to the
Fort Wayne Museum of Art. The
Art judges selected 273 Gold Keys,
161 Silver Keys and 137 Honorable Mentions this year, and the
Scholastic Region totals the fourth
highest national award total for
the past two years nation-wide.
Additionally, Art Portfolios were
submitted, and of the 60 portfolios entered, 15 were selected as
worthy of receiving a Gold Key.
The Scholastic Awards are
not limited to art, though. Writers were also able to submit
their works in various categories
in hopes of receiving the prestigious Gold Key. Nineteen Gold
Keys are to be awarded to 11
students. Six Silver Keys and 16
Honorable Mentions were also
awarded to Homestead writers.
The Regional Awards Ceremony
will be held Sunday, February 8, at
1 p.m., to which students and parents R.S.V.P.ed by February first.
National awards will be given on
Monday, March 16, during the Fort
Wayne Museum of Art’s annual
Formal or Funky: National Awards
Celebration and Teen Night.

6th, at 11:00 a.m., at the Memorial Coliseum and we expect
the ceremony to last approximately an hour and a half.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Senior named semifinalist for Science Talent Search
Society for Science & the Public, Intel Foundation honor senior
Across the nation, only 186 schools were home to semifinalists for the 74th
annual Science Talent Search. Senior Puneeth Meruva was bestowed the honor by the Society for Science & the Public as well as the Intel Foundation and
Corporation. Meruva will be awarded $1,000 for his place as a semifinalist, and
Homestead will also receive $1,000 for his efforts. The
Intel Foundation encourages schools to use this money
to “further support excellence in science, math and/or an
engineering education,” so the sum will be used to help
fund Homestead’s robotics team, which Puneeth helped
to spearhead. Principal Park Ginder received a letter from
finalists were selected
President and CEO of the Society for Science & the Public Maya Ajmera saying that “This is a proud reflection
on your school and its educators who support dedicated young researchers. Congratulation to Puneeth and his
achievements.

Congratulations to the 885 students who earned the Homestead High School Honor Roll during their 2014-2015 Fall
semester! This honor roll is based upon the final semester grades for the first semester of the 2014-2015 school
year. In order to be eligible for honor roll, students must
take a minimum of five credits. Students are eligible for
the “Honor Roll” if they earned nothing lower than a “B-“ in
all courses for the 2014-2015 Fall semester. Students are
eligible for the “Distinguished Honor Roll” (names in bold)
if they earned nothing lower than an “A-“ in all courses
for the 2014-2015 Fall semester. These students will be
recognized for their outstanding achievement during their
lunch period in the cafeteria on Thursday, February 26,
where they will receive an honor roll certificate and a special treat.

SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION
Students and parents, are you aware of the scholarship information available to you? If not read on.
Every scholarship opportunity that the School Counselors know about is placed in the Scholarship
Listing found on the SACS web page. This listing is updated at least every other week with new scholarships added and expired scholarships deleted. You will find a brief description of the scholarship,
application information (usually the web link site), and the deadline. To access this site go to:

On the upper right side, under schools heading go to Homestead High School
On the far left side click on About US and then School Counselor/Guidance page.
On the far left side click on scholarships….and you are there !
Decide between (toward the bottom of the screen) either:
• Collegiate listing, this site provides links to the Financial Aid Office and scholarships for the schools
to which our students primarily apply; OR
• Homestead Scholarship Listing: these generally are scholarships that can be used at any college.
Pretty easy….let’s get searching!
This month we are going to highlight a few random selections, some by college, some by alumni,
some by career. Reminder, this is just a random selection….there are lots more where these came
from :
• Purdue Club of Fort Wayne Scholarships (due 5/1/15): For area students who have been admitted
to PU (either West Lafayette or FW campus)
• Fort Wayne Central High School Alumni Asooc: (due 4/13/15) for students who are a descendant
of FW Central High School graduate/member of FWCHS Alumni Assoc.
• Connie Christopherson Creative Writing Scholarship (due 3/27/15): for HHS senior who has a
passion for creative writing and demonstrate such with a submission of his or her original work.
Final Note: A vast majority of awards received by students come from the college that the student
will attend. It is imperative to understand very few awards are given to students until:
1)
The student is admitted to that college/university and
2)
The student applies for financial aid using the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Assistance), and
3)
Student makes contact with the Office of Financial Aid at the specific college(s) to which they
have been admitted.

FAFSA Deadline for the 2015-2016 school year is March 10,
2015, received by midnight, Central Time
(HHS encourages students to complete by March 7th to ensure deadline is met)
REMEMBER:
-Students must file the CORRECT year’s FAFSA
-Students should file a FAFSA by March 10th even if they are
not sure whether they will be attending college
-FAFSA may be filed with estimated tax information in order
to meet March 10th deadline
-FAFSA application is available at http://fafsa.ed.gov
HHS encourages students to complete by March 7th to ensure deadline is met
SAT/ACT INFO
It is never too late to plan for your post-secondary dreams. The
first step in being prepared for your college searches is to be sure
to sign-up for and complete the appropriate ACT or SAT tests.
