Facts About America’s Teaching Zoo • America’s Teaching Zoo is the only public zoo in Ventura County and is home to Moorpark College’s Exotic Animal Training and Management program (EATM). • Established in 1974, EATM is the only college program in the United States that combines animal science with wildlife management and training. • This academically rigorous program covers animal care and handling, ethical issues, elementary veterinary procedures, animal behavior and training, wildlife education and conservation. • The zoo’s collection comprises 105 species for a total of 150 animals. • More than 25,000 people each year visit the zoo to appreciate and understand wildlife. Ongoing Zoo programs • Open to the public on weekends • Adopt-an-Animal • Junior Safari Summer Camp • On-site birthday parties • Traveling outreach programs • Private group shows and tours Annual Zoo Events • Spring Spectacular (3 weekends in March-April) • Halloween Weekend Event • Feasts for the Beasts (Thanksgiving weekend) • Presents for Primates (December holiday weekend) International Acclaim • Teaching zoo staff and animals have made numerous television and film appearances including, the Tonight Show, Airplane, 102 Dalmatians, Congo and Hotel Hanoi. • Moorpark 24/7, a 15-part documentary was filmed for the Animal Planet in 2001 by Tapestry Films. • Kicked, Bitten and Scratched, a non-fiction book by Amy Sunderland about EATM students was published by Penguin Press in 2006. EATM Graduates • 45 - 50 students per year find employment with federal and state wildlife agencies, veterinarians, wildlife, outreach and rehabilitation programs, guide and service dog organizations, museums, theme parks, the entertainment industry and zoos.
