IEEE1394 SOLUTIONS January, 2001 November, 1999 NEC’s Approach Toward IEEE1394 Devices ■ IEEE1394 High-Speed Serial Bus Most Powerful as Interface for Multimedia Network Recently, the trend towards handling data such as video and sound as digital content in home electronics has been increasing due to the start of digital broadcasting and the digitization of AV systems. At the same time, standards for multimedia networks have advanced and are being applied on a global scale. As a result, the demand for a high-speed interface that can be used to integrate and connect AV systems and computer peripherals has grown. The IEEE1394 high-speed serial bus is an interface that can be used to transmit and receive multimedia information between multiple systems. It has a function that guarantees bandwidth, which is essential for transmitting multimedia signals, a wide bandwidth of 100 to 400 Mbps, and has already been employed as an external interface in digital AV systems such as digital video camcorders and PCs. This interface is also considered the most powerful candidate for realizing multimedia home networks in the future (see Figure 1). Figure 1. IEEE1394 Applications PCs PC peripherals Multimedia services Consumer applications HDD PCs Printers, scanners Notebook PCs CD-ROM (R,R/W) MO DVD-ROM/RAM STB/Digital TV Networks for professional use Digital VHS DVD Home networks ■ IEEE1394 Becoming the Standard of the Next Generation Figure 2 illustrates the recent trends in standardization of the IEEE1394 high-speed serial bus. IEEE13941995 standard specifications are used for digital camcorders. P1394a standard specifications are used for PCs and digital AV devices. Deliberations about the P1394a specifications were concluded this year and the IEEE1394a-2000 standard was established. These specifications, however, assume the use of metal cables, and therefore, the transmission distance is limited to a maximum of 4.5 m because of electromagnetic radiation and signal attenuation. Consequently, these specifications are not suitable for networks such as multimedia home networks. Therefore, specifications that can extend the transmission distance and handle information at higher speeds have been under evaluation. One standard that extends the transmission distance and offers an increase in speed is called P1394b and is currently under deliberation. In addition, a standard called P1394.1 is also under consideration for a bridge specification that is used to separate equipment that should not be included in a network, or to segment a network into individual rooms in a house. 2 Pamphlet S13782EJ3V0PF Figure 2. Figure 3 shows a multimedia home network using IEEE1394. A safe, low-cost plastic optical fiber (POF) with an acrylic resin core will be used for connection between rooms that are far apart. Already NEC is offering products that support long-haul IEEE1394 transmission technology, and has been successful in research and development of other core technologies for home networks. NEC will continue developing solutions to support the development of its customer’s systems and applications. Figure 3.
